FROM THE DIRECTORFROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends,We are so pleased to share the Cahoon Museum of American Art’s 2017 Year in Review with you. And, wow, what a year we had at the Cahoon!

This review highlights our progress and key accomplishments, which included

presenting six ambitious exhibitions, dynamic educational offerings, three special events, new art acquisitions for our permanent collection and more.

The Cahoon Museum is active and growing in many ways. We added new staff positions and welcome Jill Conley as the Museum’s first Collection’s Manager and Kelly Brox in the role of Visitor Services Manager. Investing in the care of our art collection and working to connect visitors with engaging, interactive art experiences is central to our mission. We saw an increase in attendance and welcomed over 6,000 visitors last year – a record for our organization.

The Cahoon Museum is a place where we connect with rich traditions and new innovations in American art. But more than being one of the most unique cultural treasures on Cape Cod, the Cahoon Museum is an uplifting environment where we can connect with each other, as a community of inspired creators and intellectually curious lovers of art.

We are thankful to our founder for her creative vision, for starting a gift to our community, and to our committed members and numerous donors who are enthusiastic about the Museum’s growth and impact. I am thankful for the entire staff at the Cahoon Museum for their hard work in organizing our special projects and appreciative to be a part of a team dedicated to inspiring our community in the year to come.

I look forward to seeing you at the Museum!

Sincerely,

Sarah Johnson, Director

And now, a word about “rewards”… It seems like every time you turn around these days, the buzzword is “rewards”. Rewards for buying gas, groceries, movie tickets, air miles and more. So it made me think. Life is chock full of rewards, isn’t it? More often than not, the best ones… and surely the most memorable ones… have no monetary value. I’m talking about the rewards of experiences.

I hear from lots of nice folks who can’t wait to tell me about their experiences at the Cahoon Museum. Of course, that’s a reward in itself. More importantly, it’s a reminder to me and the talented museum staff and volunteers that we are custodians of something that our friends, neighbors and visitors truly appreciate and value. They talk about what a rewarding experience they have with each visit or when attending a Museum event or fundraiser.

2017 was an exceptional year for the Cahoon Museum, as you can see in these pages. The historic house, the vibrant and growing collection of American art, the breathtaking exhibitions, and the marvelous new addition and gallery space have all contributed to a renewed spirit of energy and excitement. We are delighted that you are delighted!

As the Museum looks to 2018 and beyond, we are committed to rewarding you with new experiences here. Of course, and in so many ways, we can’t do it without you. We invite you to reward us too with your presence and your presents. Tell your friends! Bring your neighbors! Help us to continue celebrating the vitality of great American art from Cape Cod and beyond!

PAUL MORO: A PAINTER’S JOURNEYMarch 15 – April 30Museums bring artworks together and they also bring people together! In the case of this landmark retrospective of early twentieth century master, Paul Moro, we gathered and combined key pieces of Moro’s art from lenders across the country – many of whom were Moro’s descendants, resulting in a reunion of the artist’s family. What a joy to celebrate his connection to the Cape and artistic legacy!

THE ART OF ELIZABETH MUMFORD May 3 – June 25In the spring, we celebrated the classic tableaus and new work of Cape Cod living treasure, Liz Mumford. Lucky participants in a painting workshop studied the art of watercolor with Liz. Liz’s talk on her artistic

journey packed the house with over one hundred attendees!

Christina Bologna, Cape Cod Cooperative Bank, artist Liz Mumford, and museum director Sarah Johnson.

MASTER OF THE MARITIME: JAMES E. BUTTERSWORTHJune 28 – August 20Master of the Maritime: the Art of James E. Buttersworth was inspired by Buttersworth paintings in the Cahoon Museum’s collection. A draw for Cape Cod residents and regional audiences enthusiastic about the artist and the genre of marine painting, this exhibition’s outstanding group of masterpieces from private collectors and museums garnered national attention.

AT REST, IN FLIGHT: CAPE COD BIRD CARVINGSAugust 23 – October 8An authentically American expression, we shared the story of bird carving as an art form in At Rest, In Flight: Cape Cod Bird Carving, one of the most popular shows of the season. Guest curator Eric Kaiser with Steve Weaver assembled a fascinating historic narrative with an unrivaled selection of beautiful examples from historic legends and modern masters of bird carving.

CONTEMPORARY SILHOUETTES: THE ART OF CUT PAPEROctober 11 – December 23Artists working across a wide range of styles in this exhibit drew upon the tradition of historic silhouettes to create new intricate works in the art form of cut paper. With artists such as Cotuit’s own Lucy Gibbons Morse (1839-1936) and a group of nationally known contemporary artists including Elizabeth Alexander (Winston-Salem, NC), Pamela Dalton (Ghent, NY), Ernesto Caivano (New York, NY), Fred Liang (Boston, MA), Randal Thurston (Somerville, MA), Tomas Vu Danial (New York, NY), and Yuan Zuo (Dennis, MA), this show contained a number of ‘wow’ moments and rich visual connections.

SMALL WORKS SHOWNovember 21 – December 23We celebrated the talent of local Cape Cod artists in this benefit exhibit.

EDUCATION“From learning about folk artists and Cape Cod history, to discovering how to properly handle art in storage, in shipping and in gallery spaces, my time at the Cahoon encapsulated everything I love about art and museums, and reminded me that at the end of every challenge is a wealth of knowledge and growth. As I learned from my work on this year’s Elizabeth Mumford show, there’s nothing like seeing an exhibition develop from start to finish, or meeting an artist in person and hearing how their personal histories have impacted their art, and then turning those conversations into text. It’s those moments of achievement and pride that I’ll be chasing for the rest of my career, and I’m so glad to have gotten my start at a museum like the Cahoon.” – ANNE COLLETTA

Cape Cod Academy student, Holly He, created family activities and an exhibit guide to the Liz Mumford exhibition during her Education Internship in May.

Artists David Sigel and Hilary Hutchison led summer Creative Studio workshops focusing on maritime projects relating to the

James Buttersworth exhibit. Workshops included making cast cement Sailors Valentines and tunnel books.

Hands-on art classes brought the exhibitions on view to life!

2017 EVENTS

CRUISE WITH THE CAHOON – JUNE 1On June 1, a clear early summer night, a group of Cahoon Museum’s friends and supporters sailed the Nantucket Sound aboard the Island Queen on a South Seas themed adventure. We danced the night away, enjoyed libations and hors d’oeuvres, raffle prizes and more on this fun and festive cruise.

THE BRUSH OFF – JULY 8Now in its 27th year, the Brush Off is always a memorable summer day celebrating the Cape’s art and artists. This annual arts festival featured live and silent auctions, artists painting on site on the village green and at scenic spots around Cotuit. The community experienced local arts and artists while benefitting the museum. We look forward to next year’s Brush Off on Saturday, July 7.

GARDEN TOUR: RUSHY MARSH FARM – AUGUST 18Patrons and supporters of the Cahoon Museum of American Art enjoyed touring Frank and Monica McCourt’s horticultural masterpiece in Cotuit, Rushy Marsh Farm, as a fundraiser for the museum on August 18. The exquisite beauty of the day will not be forgotten!

“What an incredible afternoon we had at Rushy Marsh Farm! The beauty was bountiful and overflowing! We had a marvelous time and are very grateful to the McCourts for opening their farm to all who got to see this remarkable place in support of your great museum.” – ANNE ARMSTRONG AND FRIENDS
