To achieve this goal, the Society relies on the active participation of its members, who represent a diverse cross-section of professional sub-specialties.

Vison StatementThe Women’s Dermatologic Society is committed to issues relevant to women and their families.

Mission StatementThe mission of the Women’s Dermatologic Society is to be the premier organization cultivating personal and professional development of dermatologists dedicated to excellence in patient care, mentorship, volunteerism, and leadership.

President’s Welcome LetterDear WDS Members, Supporters, and Friends,

Welcome to the 2019 Women’s Dermatologic Society Annual Meeting & Luncheon! We are honored by your presence.

As I reflect on my presidential year, I am so proud of all that we have accomplished, in terms of strengthening our core programs and creating groundbreaking initiatives that address total women’s health through the dermatology gateway.

Under the umbrella of the Transforming Interconnecting Program Project, we launched our new Women’s Shelter Initiative. To date, 17 events were held in 10 different shelters, with more planned for 2019, including the first “Global Women’s Shelter” event in India at the end of March led by Dr. Rashmi Sarkar.

The recent WDS Forum was a huge success with record attendance. As an added value we offered CME credits in total women’s health through the dermatology gateway, and invited speakers from other specialties to present.

We established a Think Tank of key global thought leaders to advise us, and created an Advisory Board to the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology, consisting of clinicians representing other specialties.

We launched the WDS Diversity Initiative to impact underrepresented minorities in dermatology, including The Summer Fellowship Grant for medical students in their first or second year. We also hosted a Diversity Networking Breakfast and Panel during the AAD for local minority students, and are now partners for the AAD’s Champions of Diversity

In addition to these important advancements, we branched out globally with a presence at the EADV, and across the United States. We hosted 12 Regional Educational and Networking events, plus 38 Coast-2-Coast events and four Play Safe in the Sun events!

I’m excited to see how this year’s significant achievements will blossom and grow in the future to serve our organization and our specialty.

It has been a true honor to serve as your President for 2018-2019.

Sincerely,Pearl E. Grimes, MDPresident 2018-2019

Personal Note/ Statement of Thanks: I am both honored and humbled to receive this award which is especially meaningful as it comes from my peers. I share this award with all those who have endeavored to create such a successful organization - the WDS. It is important to acknowledge and thank all those who have supported me through the years in so many ways. ‘Legacy’ does not occur in a vacuum. This organization is full of others who believe in dermatology, service, mentorship and quality care for our patients. Special thanks to Deirdre Hooper who Chaired this wonderful event, to Pearl Grimes the WDS President and to the Legacy Council.

Legacy is often defined as something handed down or left behind – a gift of sorts. When I think about my personal ‘Legacy’, there are two parts. What was handed to me, and what I might have passed on that benefited someone else. It would be impossible to mention all that has been given to me. One thing I hope I may have passed down is the gift of giving individuals the courage to go for it even if it was not on the agenda. Standing for what they believe is right and just and not yielding to external pressure, of following their dreams and taking chances, of being curious and excited about learning new things, of following a passion or a dream while maintaining their core values and remembering that family and friends are always a priority. I benefited from these legacy gifts handed to me. It led to leadership roles in WDS and to the Presidency of the AAD –but the most important gift has been making lifetime friends - and having a support group that nourished and enriched me -- both professionally and personally.

Past Recipients:2018 - Pearl E. Grimes, MD2017 - Susan H. Weinkle, MD2016 - Jean Bolognia, MD2015 - Dr. Rex & Johnnie Amonette2014 - Tina S. Alster, MD2013 - Wilma F. Bergfeld, MD

The Legacy Award is presented annually to an individual who has been an advocate of WDS a leader to the society and to the field of dermatology. This individual is honored at the Legacy Celebration held each year during the AAD Annual Meeting. The proceeds from the celebration are donated to the Legacy Fund, which was established to ensure the long-term financial stability of the WDS.

Personal Note/ Statement of Thanks: As the 4th-generation woman physician in my family, I find special meaning in the Women’s Dermatologic Society. In 1927, the University of Maryland Medical School graduated its first two women physicians. One of them was my great aunt, a 2nd-generation woman physician. She began her career seeing exclusively women patients.

Since that time, women in medicine have come a long way. I accept this award in honor of the many women who now contribute in so many ways to dermatology – including as presidents of the AAD, the many women chairs we now have who support this field and their departments with strong leadership and passion, and everyone who contributes to advancing our field.

I have benefitted from several mentors, and want to acknowledge the pivotal support of Irwin Friedberg, Dr. Andrew Franks and Dr. Richard Sontheimer, who have been amazing mentors to me and to many others in the area of autoimmune skin disease. I would also like to acknowledge the support of Dr. George Cotsarelis, my current chair at Penn. My husband, Dr. Kevin Jon Williams, and my five children have been continuous supporters of my efforts. It has been a privilege to work to advance the field, mentor our trainees and young faculty, and aid our patients.

Personal Note/ Statement of Thanks: It is an honor to be rewarded and recognized for your work and I thank you.

Our president Pearl Grimes initiated this WDS project for abused women in shelters and has inspired all of us to be involved.

To paraphrase Halle Berry, “ this moment is bigger than me.” This moment is for Kim Drew,MD, Frankie Rholdon, MD, Mozelle Fruge, BCSW, the staff of Faith house in Lafayette, and the nameless women living in Faith house. Kim Drew is in fantastic physical shape and achieved getting us all using an exercise ban, Mozelle started or ended each program with a meditation session, and Frankie educated us on how to treat acne and atopic dermatitis on a budget.

In our profession we are often told we change lives, but in reality we are the ones changed by giving.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2018

365 DAYS/YEARthe Village’s programs were open, holding wellness classes, access to

physical health services and Day Center.

“I’ve seen organizations like this all over, but N Street Village is the best.” RICHARD GERE, ANNUAL GALA

“N Street Village is known nationally as an innovator in homeless services.” D.C. MAYOR MURIEL BOWSER

“We all want to know this one thing, did you hear me? Do you see me? And what I love about N Street Village is that every staff member understands that principle…that women who come to the front door want to be seen, they want to be heard, they want to know their lives matter.” OPRAH WINFREY, ANNUAL LUNCHEON

“The people who work at N Street Village strive to make it a place that offers not just

tangible physical comforts — a meal, a bed — but also a less tangible one: a

connection on a soothing, personal level.”

“In Washington, where women represent 26% of the homeless population, a ‘wrap-around’ model of housing and support services for homeless women is proving effective, as provided by organizations

like N Street Village.”

“Strategic partnerships, asset stewardship, earned income opportunities, mergers and

acquisitions, fundraising optimization—all big business buzzwords. We’re not talking corporate titans, but rather N Street Village, a provider of critical service to homeless women for 40 years.”

“The Village is a special place. As a volunteer, I came to give back. But in the end, I receive so much more. N Street Village makes me a better person.” PAM, VILLAGE VOLUNTEER
