It is hard to believe, but we are already into our second

semester here at Wilbur Charter. Many of you have children

who had perfect attendance for the first semester. Attendance

in school is mandatory for children ages 5-18 per the state of

California, and it is written into the state Education Code. It is a

good time to review our attendance policies, as I hope all

students have perfect attendance for the second semester!

Every education study cites the importance of

attendance as a component of academic success. Of course,

children (and adults) occasionally become ill, and children

should not come to school if they have a fever or

communicable disease. Recently, the school district began

posting data which shows the amount of revenue/funding lost

when students are not in attendance. This funding goes

directly to the school sites, and it amazing to see the figures.

Last year, Wilbur Charter lost over $134,000 in funding. The

two highest months for lowest attendance: February and

March!

Please make all doctor/dental appointments after

school, and consider going on a family vacation during non-

school time. Also, going on a family vacation when school is in

session does not count as an excused absence, and funding is

lost. In addition, a note is required when your child is absent

from school; you can download a copy from our website

(wilburschool.org) under “forms.”
