Tophammer drillingDrilling method:
The classic tophammer method is renowned for high penetration rates in good drilling conditions. Atlas Copco is developing the method continu-ously.
Exhaustive research into how impact energy can be transmitted into the drill bit in the most efficient way, with least possible stress, has resulted in a new generation of rock drills. Development has been focused on the key component in the rock drill - the piston. The piston length, mass, and ge-ometry have resulted in even faster penetration. The effect is that more rock are crushed with each blow from the piston. Moreover, a double damping system reduces the load on components leading to long service life, at the same time as drill-steel
wear is reduced. In other words, the positive results of faster drill-ing are not counteracted by higher drill steel costs.
An extractor unit is available as a useful accessory for poor rock conditions.

Drilling method:COPROD drilling
The COPROD system combines the speed of top-hammer drilling with the precision and long ser-vice life of the down-the-hole method.
Inside each rigid, threaded tube section is an impact rod. It is furnished with stop lugs to hold it in place inside the tube section. The so called COPROD sections are joined together via the other tubes. Since the other tubes transmit rota-tion torque and feed force only, the stress to the threads is minimal and life lenght very long. All negative effects of transmitting the impact energy through the threads are eliminated entirely. The re-sult is high impact power with minimal wear. Since the outer tubes are smooth and flush along the en-tire length of the drillstring, it is almost impossible for jamming to occur.
Practical experience with COPROD has been exceptionally good. The method gives good overall economy, particularly in large-scale production drilling and drilling in broken rock or other demanding rock conditions.
10
Drilling method:Down-the-hole drilling
11
Drills using the down-the-hole method (DTH) are easy to operate and maintain. The method offers a reliable way to drill hard to soft, solid to fissured or fracture rock, and features a hammer piston, which strikes the drill bit with virtually no power loss. Shallow, deep or long holes are drilled with barely any change in capacity. Hammer casing and stiff drill tubes offer good guidance for the hammer and drill bit, minimizing in hole deviation. Thus blasting patterns and use of explosives can be optimized, increasing the yield of rock at a reduced cost per meter or footage drilled. The optimized annulus between the drill tubes and the hole wall ensures efficient hole cleaning under most rock conditions, including long or deep holes or holes filled with water.
Except for blast hole drilling the DTH method is widely used for water well drilling, shallow gas and oil wells, and for geothermal wells. It is also developed for sampling using the Reverse Circulation technique (RC-drilling).

ROC L825 RC and ROC L830RC
With its 54 m (177 ft) drill depth capability, the ROC L8RC easily al-lows defined boundaries of ore bodies. Knowing where the ore bodies start and end makes it possible to blast and excavate ore and waste separately and mix ideal ratios of ore and rock into the crusher. With an upgrading kit ROC L825/30 LF can be converted into RC-drilling as well as the ROC L8RC may be used for blast hole drilling when RC drilling is not at hand.

Recommended hole range at extension drilling. At 1. one rod drilling/Single pass drilling (SP) with top-hammers smaller hole diameters may be used. Check with your Atlas Copco representative.Recommended drill rod type (tophammer drills), 2. COPROD section (COPROD drills) or drill tube di-ameter (DTH-drills).Max hole depth with a fully loaded rod/tube han-3. dling system plus one starter rod/tube. Stated hole depths with ROC L6/L8 rigs includes longer starter tubes.Max hole depth at Single pass drilling (SP) with 4. same size drill steel as loaded into the handling systems. Stated SP capacity with ROC L6/L8 rigs includes a longer starter tube. A longer starter rod/tube may also be used on other rigs too. Check with your Atlas Copco representative.

The diagrams are intended to be used as a guide. They do not represent any guarantees in terms of production capacity, as rock characteristics and specific worksite environment may differ widely in each specific case.
The upper curve represents medium hard rock with a compressive strength of 140-160 MPa and the lower hard-er rock with a compressive strength of 220-240 MPa.
Higher production volumes will be reached in softer rock, of less than 140-160 MPa, but for safe hole cleaning, efficient dust collection and reduce in hole deviation (top-hammers) a restriction of the output power of the rock drills may be called for.
Due to higher density and higher energy content, emul-sion explosives may deliver substantially more rock per meter drilled, in comparison to ANFO, which form the ba-sis of the diagrams.

Atlas Copco rigs offer storage systems for fast and ef-ficient handling of drill steel. The storage capacity is suf-ficient to cover hole depths occurring during blast hole drilling.
RHS - Rod handling system RHS includes a carousel storage of a varying number and sizes of drill rods (tophammer rigs), COPROD sec-tions (COPROD drills) or drill tubes (DTH-drills).
RAS - Rod adding system RAS includes gripper arms adding one drill rod (top-hammer) to the starter rod. This system may also be used with COPROD-rigs and DTH-rigs.
RR - Rod rack system (tophammer rigs)The RR is mounted to the side of the feed, holding a few manually handled drill rods.
TR - Tube rack system (DTH rigs)For pneumatic DTH rigs there are optional hydraulic el-evated racks available, but for manual handling of drill tubes. Note: Specified hole depths in the tables are based on the capacity of the drill steel handling systems. Deeper or longer holes may be drilled by recharging the system with additional rods or tubes. Deeper or longer holes for specialised drill operations are usually done with DTH rigs.

A SmartRig drill rig replaces manual hydraulic valves by electrical valves precision controlled by a computer control system. Atlas Copco has developed a platform where components and functions can be shared on all machines and rig types; this is called RCS, Rig Control System.
Reuse of components, both hardware and software, re-sults in well-tested and stable systems. The continuous development of new applications combines efforts and helps to increase the availability and efficiency. Not to mention the ease of training of service personnel for our customers.
54
Easy troubleshooting and maintenance• - Modules status available in display - Individual valve and sensor status available
High productivity due to consistent quality• - Consistent setup due to AutoPos - Fast consistent rod adding due to AutoRHS
Unprecedented safety and ergonomics • - “Dry Cabin” without hydraulics reduces heat and leaks - Lower sound level with no hoses in the cabin
Superior documentation• - Fast and easy planning - Reports creates good and easy reporting /invoicing
