SAM ALLARDYCETHE MANAGER SAYS HIS TEAM CANNOT AFFORD TO RELAX AFTER MAKING AN ENCOURAGING START TO THE BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON

SPONSORED BY

BIG SAM

HELLO and welcome back to the Boleyn Ground for today’s exciting Barclays Premier League fixture with Manchester City.

I would like to welcome Manuel Pellegrini, his staff, players and Manchester City fans to the Boleyn Ground and wish them a safe journey back to the North West.

The eyes of the football world will be on us this afternoon as we seek to build on the encouraging start we have made to the new season.

We go into today’s game full of confidence, having achieved deserved back-to-back wins against QPR and Burnley.

I was particularly pleased with the way we withstood Burnley’s early pressure before going on to score three outstanding headed goals last week.

I turned 60 last Sunday and that win certainly made my birthday cake taste all the sweeter, I can assure you!

We have 13 points from eight games, have played some good football and scored some great goals, but we should have more points on the board.

This is no time to pat ourselves on the back for a job well done – the season is less than a quarter old.

We have given ourselves a base and now we need to find a level of consistency all over the pitch to build on it.

With no disrespect to the two sides we have just beaten, Manchester City will provide a different level of challenge.

Today’s visitors are the Barclays Premier League champions and have world-class players all over the pitch.

We cannot afford to produce

anything less than our best this afternoon. That said, if we do, we have prepared the players to do just that.

At the same time, our opponents have travelled to Russia and back in the UEFA Champions League in midweek and we must take advantage of any fatigue they may be suffering because of that trip.

What has pleased me greatly this season is the number of players who have stepped up in each game at vital times.

While our attackers have made the headlines, the reality is that we have players all over the pitch making match-changing contributions - and we will need more of the same again today.

This week we said goodbye to our goalkeeper coach Martyn

Margetson, who has returned to his native South Wales with his old club Cardiff City.

Marge – who Manchester City supporters will also know well from his time playing there – has been an outstanding member of my staff for the past three years. He was recommended to me by the late Gary Speed and I must say that recommendation was spot-on.

Marge has a young family who he will now be able to spend much more time with and I wish him all the best.

We have brought in the vastly-experienced Bobby Mimms as our new goalkeeper coach.

Neil McDonald and I worked with Bobby at Blackburn Rovers, so we know he is a top coach and a top professional.

Bobby has been working in the Middle East with the Bahrain national set-up and I know he is relishing the opportunity to work in the Barclays Premier League on a daily basis again.

Talking of staff, no football club would operate without its unsung heroes and one of ours is interviewed in today’s programme – Chadwell Heath assistant chef Shirley Austin.

Shirley has been in football nearly as long as I have and is a lady that everyone at our training ground has come to rely upon and trust.

I am sure nothing would give Shirley, and every other West Ham fan, greater pleasure than a third straight Barclays Premier League victory this afternoon.

Come on you Irons!

A win at Burnley was theperfect 60th birthday present!

CAPTAIN’S NOTES

HELLO everyone,We’re in a good place, aren’t

we! It’s always nice to look at the table and see yourselves in the top few.

Hats off to the lads because it’s been great to be a part of it, seeing how hard they’re all working for each other and how well the new boys have settled in. Everything seems to be fitting into place just now.

The main thing is that we’ve scored goals and we always look like we’re going to score goals. Last year, we weren’t playing with strikers at times, which obviously helped us on the clean sheet front, but it also meant we didn’t score as many goals.

I want to give a special mention to the front two Enner and Diafra. Enner’s work-rate is immense. He got off a plane from the US about 36 hours before the Burnley game and produced a performance capped with a superb goal.

I can’t see Diafra not scoring in a game at the moment – that’s how well he is playing. He just gives you 110 per cent, which is fantastic and brilliant for us to work off.

I’ve played with a few Senegalese boys in my time, firstly after the 2002 World Cup when they beat France at Bolton and later at Newcastle and here at West Ham.

The likes of Abdy Faye, Khalilou Fadiga, El-Hadji Diouf, Papa Diop and Cheikh Kouyate have it in their DNA that they want to win and be successful. It’s a mentality that comes from the sacrifices they make for their careers.

I must confess I didn’t know of Diafra before he came in, but what a find he is! You’ve got to give all the credit to him, because he works so hard to get into the positions to score goals, then he has the ability to put the ball in the net.

He is a great lad and I’m delighted for him and just hope he keeps it up because together, he and Enner work opposition defences to pieces.

I’m looking forward to seeing how far we can go this season, because I don’t think we’re in a false position at the moment, but a true reflection of what we’ve done this year.

Another story that has been in the headlines recently was the one surrounding Raheem Sterling and England – a situation I think should have been handled better.

We’ve got one of the top young players in the game coming through, who has been fantastic for his club Liverpool and hasn’t missed a game for them since December.

He is 19 and wants to play in every game, but the physicality of the Barclays Premier League makes it more difficult for players to come through here than it is in Spain or France, for example.

Every match in this league is played at such a high intensity and sometimes young players need to be taken out of the firing line and given a break.

I remember at Bolton as a teenager myself, Sam used to give me full week off if he felt I needed it, as Sir Alex Ferguson did with his youngsters at Manchester United.

Look at what happened to the likes of Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler who came through as youngsters and suffered injuries later in their careers.

Raheem has been playing solidly for a year or more for club and country all over the world and I felt really sorry for the lad.

Concentrating on today’s game, Manchester City have been brilliant at times this season, and looked vulnerable at others – let’s hope they are vulnerable today after their tough midweek trip to Russia, where they lost two late goals.

If we keep playing like we have been, then we can do well. We’re at home and if we can take the game to them in the first 20 minutes and get the goals, like we did against Liverpool, then we can stop them from expressing themselves and put our stamp on the game.

The boys have a lot of confidence and we have points on the board, so we go into the game looking to get a result.

Finally, Martyn Margetson has departed and he’ll be a massive miss, not only as a goalkeeper coach but because of his knowledge of the game. He has done great things with Jussi and Adrian and our loss will be a huge gain for Cardiff City. We’re all gutted, but it’s the right thing for him and we wish him all the best.

Enjoy the game today and let’s keep this good run going.

Diafra has been on fire since he joined us!

FROM THE BOARDROOM

GOOD afternoon and welcome back to the Boleyn Ground for today’s visit of the 2013/14 Barclays Premier League champions, Manchester City.

Today’s game promises to be a real test, given that Manuel Pellegrini’s team have won the league twice in three years and cost £300m to assemble, but we can go into the contest in a really positive frame of mind with back-to-back victories pushing us up to fourth in the table.

The league standings make for great viewing at the moment, and it is reward for a hugely encouraging start to the season, which has seen us score 15 goals in eight games, win four of them and feel justifiably aggrieved to have not taken more than the 13 points we have registered.

For me, the most striking difference between last season and the start of this is with our firepower in attacking areas – it took us until Boxing Day last year to reach 15 league goals, while this term we got there before the clocks go back.

We have been exciting to watch and most importantly, the players we recruited this summer to improve the squad have hit the ground running.

Diafra Sakho’s impact, in particular, has been outstanding. He has scored six goals in six starts for the Club, and although people may have said signing him was a gamble after playing in the French second tier last year, the work we put in scouting him is being vindicated.

GOALS GALOREAS far as I am concerned, a goalscorer is a goalscorer, and I think that is being proven by the strikers’ contributions this season. Over the summer we brought in last year’s top scorer in Argentina, Mauro Zarate, the top scorer in Mexico, who also outscored the entire England team at the World

Cup, Enner Valencia, and the top scorer in France’s equivalent of the Championship, Sakho.

At Burnley last weekend, not only did Sakho and Valencia score, but the assists for all three goals also came from summer signings in Aaron Cresswell, Carl Jenkinson and Sakho himself. Added to that, Carlton Cole came off the bench to score the game-clinching third, and it shows that the striking department is in fine order right now. With Andy Carroll also making good progress in his comeback from injury, we can look forward to all of our forwards pushing each other on to even greater heights over the rest of the campaign.

Between them they have scored nine times this season and have given us what we sorely lacked last year – goals.

It gives us hope that we can claim another good result against a top side today, following the fine victory over Liverpool last month, and these are optimistic times at West Ham.

We do know, however, that this afternoon’s game will pose the sternest test we have faced this season and we are under no illusions as to the size of the task we face, so as ever your support will play a vital role. It was great

to see the 3,000 travelling fans at Burnley rewarded with three points and an exciting display, and we aim to do the same again back here at the Boleyn Ground this afternoon.

THE WEST HAM WAYFINALLY, I read an article this week in which Sir Alex Ferguson said he was not sure what the West Ham Way was. Personally, I think what we are witnessing right now is exactly that. We are playing attacking football with everybody giving 100 per cent, and we are getting results at the same time.

Not only that, but beyond the football, it’s about being a Club that gives back to the community. The work our Community Sports Trust is doing in fulfilling the West Ham ethos of giving back, combined with the current positivity on the pitch means this is a good time for everybody involved at the Club, so let’s make sure we can take that forward and build on the good work we have already achieved in 2014/15.

Come on you Irons!

JIM Barrett Jr, the former West Ham United striker and youth-team coach, passed away on Monday October 20 at his home in Haverhill, Suffolk. He was 83 and will be remembered as one of the Club’s great characters.

The West Ham-born inside forward plied his trade in the early 1950s and scored 26 goals from 91 games for the Hammers, having joined the ground staff in 1944 at the tender age of 14.

In a recent interview Jim gave to EX-Hammers magazine he recalled that time with pride: “I remember my first day like it was yesterday. I was getting ready to go to the ground when a telegram arrived informing me that, due to a bomb falling on the Boleyn Ground, my start date would be put back by a few weeks. My first wage was about £1-per-week.”

Jim would later play for both Nottingham Forest (64 goals from 195 games) and Birmingham City (four goals from ten games).

He would later return to West Ham in a coaching capacity following the departure of youth-team manager Bill Robinson in 1960. It was a position in which Jim excelled, leading a Harry Redknapp-marshalled youth team to FA Youth Cup success over Liverpool in 1963.

Burgeoning talent such as John Sissons, Trevor Dawkins, Peter Bennett, Dennis Burnett, Bobby Howe, Martin Britt and John Charles all benefited from Jim’s experience while the next crop of talent included both Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard.

Former winger Sissons responded to the news from his

home in South Africa by saying: “He was a great inspiration to the 1963 FA Youth Cup-winning team. A wonderful man with a great sense of humour.”

When asked in recent years about the best player to pass under his charge, Jim Barrett’s response was emphatic: “You won’t have to look any further than Brooking.”

FIRM BUT FUNFRANK Lampard Snr holds many fond memories of Jim at West Ham: “He was old school, which was great for us young lads aged 15 and 16. He played in all the training matches and toughened us up by being very physical. He was a hard taskmaster but always had a quip to lighten the mood. When someone did something special on the pitch, the players would usually shout ‘great ball’ or ‘terrific ball’. Jim would shout back: ‘It should be, it cost a tenner!’.”

Jim gained his coaching badges at Lilleshall. He graduated at the same time as John Lyall, Bobby Robson and Don Howe, all of whom made an invaluable contribution to the development of the game.

JIM BARRETT JR

the 1960s, Sir Geoff Hurst was saddened by the news of Jim’s passing, saying: “Jim was always very positive and on many occasions very humorous.”

Former West Ham striker and chief scout Roger Cross remembers Jim as having a keen sense of humour: “Every day he would drive all the youngsters to training from Upton Park to Chadwell Heath in a claret Bedford van. On one occasion we stopped at some traffic lights and there was a group of nuns crossing the road. Jim stuck his head out of the window and wagged his finger at them saying: ‘We’ll have none of that funny business here, ladies!’.”

FA Cup winner Peter Brabrook also remembers Jim’s humour: “He had difficulty with one of his arms which he couldn’t straighten properly. Apparently, he was dropped by a nurse as a baby and it restricted his movement. Old Jim would even find humour in that. At the bar he would pretend he had one arm shorter than the other and couldn’t reach his pocket to pay!”

Goalkeeper Peter Grotier is another to recall Jim with fondness and his experience is typical of so many West Ham youngsters during the Club’s golden era of the 1960s: “Jim was my first manager when I progressed into the old Metropolitan league and he was always full of stories and jokes. With the passing of Jim, all the original coaches when I arrived in 1966 have left us – Ron Greenwood, John Lyall, Ernie Gregory, Albert Walker and now Jim.”

A WEST HAM FAMILYJIM Barrett Jr’s contribution to the Club as a player in the 1950s sings of an age which is lost forever. His surviving wife of 64 years, Lambeth-girl Kit, provides a valuable insight into the family which also provided the world with his father ‘Big’ Jim Barrett, who made more than 500 first-team appearances.

She said: “Football was everything to the Barretts and they took their responsibilities to the Club very seriously. I’ll never

forget the first Christmas Eve we spent together at Jim’s parents’ house along with his two sisters Jennifer and Maria. We were enjoying the festivities when all of a sudden Jim’s mum came over quite early in the evening, took his hand and said: ‘Time for bed boy.’ He was 20-years-old but West Ham were playing Leeds United on Christmas Day so there was no question that he would need an early night!”

Jim’s post-playing career saw him enter the licensing trade, becoming the publican of the Napier Arms in Halstead, Essex. This was followed by 20 years as a supervisor at the Haverhill Leisure Centre in Suffolk.

Losing a loved one breaks a valuable link to the past and in the case of the affable Jim Barrett Jr this is compounded manifold given the stature of his father.

The name ‘Barrett’ is intrinsically linked to West

Ham United and ‘Big’ Jim was a household name between 1924 and 1939. He played 442 competitive games for the Club and scored 49 goals. One of his many lasting legacies was the four minutes he played as an England international before limping off against Northern Ireland in 1928 never to wear the shirt again.

Young Jim always had a story about his father: “He liked a drink, a smoke, a gamble and a laugh. He would finish training at 1pm and go to the pub, usually the Two Puddings in Stratford, or gamble at the dog track because that was all there was to do.

“When I was a young lad my house in Claude Road, near the ground, was usually packed with West Ham players either playing cards or having a drink. Vic Watson, Jimmy Ruffell, Alf Chalkley, Jimmy Collins, Jackie Morton, Lenny Goulden and many others usually dropped by. I didn’t think much of it at the time but when I look back I realise it was something very special indeed. My Dad loved Charlie Paynter and gave me the middle name ‘Guy’ on his advice because I was born on 5 November!’

THE END OF AN ERAJIM was one of only eight surviving octogenarians to have played for West Ham United. That band of stalwarts has now sadly diminished but still includes Roy Stroud (89), Frank O’Farrell (87), Vic Keeble (84), George Petchey (83), Harry Hooper (81), Dave Dunmore (80) and Ken Brown (80).

Ken Brown describes Jim as: “The master of the sliding tackle. He could retrieve the ball on the floor like nobody else I saw in my time as a player.”

Jim Barrett Jr’s 25-year association with West Ham United forms part of the Barrett family’s 45-year connection with the Club. It was a time defined by character, domestic, European and world achievement.

He is survived by his wife Kit and their daughters Lesley and Lynn. He had been pre-deceased by his son, Lee.

NEW STADIUM

THE Sir Trevor Brooking Stand at the former Olympic Stadium already has the royal seal of approval, West Ham United royalty that is.

Sir Trevor himself delivered his verdict at the Club’s New Stadium Reservation Centre in Stratford, just a stone’s throw away from the Hammers’ new home.

Encouraged by what he sees on the pitch and impressed by all that is happening off it, Sir Trevor urged the Club to keep that winning feeling as the big move beckons.

“If we can end the season in mid-table, then we’re only one season from the move and that feel good factor will be there,” he explained. “You want to move with the feeling that the Club is going forward.”

Onwards and upwards says Sir Trevor and the Hammers legend believes there is plenty to admire about the new Stadium plans. West Ham have long since outlined a commitment to affordable family football, a philosophy that the former FA Director was quick to commend.

He continued: “The switch to Stratford was always going to be a challenge. The Club has

done a fantastic job to counter all the obstacles so far.

“The big query was would we able to fill 54,000 seats but with that sort of capacity it gives the Club the opportunity to offer a really good pricing structure.

“If you can crack that with good hospitality, which they should be able to do given the location and accessibility, then you have flexibility over the prices for the remaining seats. For example kids for a quid. You want every fan to be able to afford to see their team as well as having a full stadium.”

And a traditionalist he may be, but the 66-year-old can certainly see the wisdom in the switch to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, not least where Club London – the Stadium’s spectacular hospitality offering – is concerned.

When the opportunity arose

of moving to the Olympic Stadium I don’t think there would have been many in the board’s position who would have said it wasn’t the right move.”

“Traditionally, if you’ve been a fan for a long time you would have been a bit hesitant about moving away from the Boleyn Ground but it’s not the easiest place to get to and from.

“The rail links to Stratford are fantastic and with the club having almost 4,000 corporate seats and with Canary Wharf and the city so accessible, people can come regularly to the Olympic stadium and host clients.

Sir Trevor is every bit as enthused about the prospect of seeing his name adorn the new Stadium and, of course, he will be in esteemed company.

“When Bobby Moore’s stand was created everyone was pleased. I knew him well and it was so sad that he passed away so early. When I was asked if they could name a stand after me that was great, of course.

“It’s very nice that the two stands have been incorporated into the new stadium, it’s fantastic really.”

*Sir Trevor will be back at the Boleyn Ground in a fortnight’s time for the visit of Aston Villa to sign copies of his new book,’ Trevor Brooking – My Life in Football’. In the interim, we’ve ten signed copies to give away, so keep an eye on our social media platforms to see how to enter.

RAY Winstone’s amazing talent for bringing out the humanity buried inside his often brutal screen characters – violent offender in Scum, wife-beater in Nil by Mouth, retired blagger in Sexy Beast – has made him one of the most charismatic actors of his generation.

But how do these uncompromising and often haunting performances square with Winstone’s off-duty reputation as the ultimate salt-of-the-earth diamond geezer?

The answer lies in the East End of his youth. Revisiting the bomb-sites and boozers of his childhood and adolescence, Winstone takes the reader on an unforgettable tour of a cockney heartland which is at once irresistibly mythic and undeniably real.

Told with its author’s trademark blend

of brutal directness and roguish wit, Young Winstone offers a fascinating

insight into the social history of East London, as well as a school of hard knocks coming-of-age story with a powerful emotional punch.

ENNER Valencia has added the West Ham United Goal of the Month prize for September to his Player of the Month award.

Having already won the whufc.com website vote to be named September’s top performer, he followed that up with a landslide victory in the Goal of the Month poll.

The Ecuadorian’s rocket at Hull City, which drew the Hammers level at 1-1 en route to a 2-2 draw, was selected as the top strike by 76% of supporters.

Diafra Sakho’s sumptuous chip against Liverpool was second with 11% of the vote, while another Sakho effort – a wonderful team goal in a friendly match against Ipswich Town – was just behind with 10%.

Valencia follows fellow South American Mauro Zarate, who won the August award for his volley at Crystal Palace.

HAMMERS SIM CARD GOES ON SALE WEST Ham United and principal sponsor Alpari

teamed up to mark the opening of the leading global FX broker’s new Shanghai office.

Hammers players wore Chinese branded shirts in their warm-up ahead of the 3-1 Barclays Premier League win over Liverpool.

The claret warm-up shirts carried the Alpari Chinese logo on the front and a tagline on the back in Mandarin which read ‘Trading. The way it should be’.

As the Barclays Premier League has broadcast distribution reaching more than 700 million households, the opening of the Shanghai office on Sunday 21 September strengthens the mutual global ambitions for both Alpari and West Ham to increase exposure in its key regions, especially in the Asian markets.

West Ham United’s very own co-branded Lycamobile SIM cards are now on sale at all three of the Club’s Official Stores.

Lycamobile, the largest global provider of low-cost international mobile calls, has produced a bespoke Hammers SIM card, which will raise funds for the Club’s Community Sports Trust.

West Ham are retailing the SIM card at £5, which includes £5 of credit to be used on the Lycamobile network. For every SIM card sold the Trust will receive £2, in addition to ten per cent of all online top ups made during the course of the 2014/15 season.

Supporters can now get their hands on the SIM cards from the Club’s Official Stadium, Romford and Lakeside Stores.

This latest partnership initiative follows hot on the heels of the inaugural Lycamobile Cup, a new youth football tournament which saw a total of 4,500 youngsters participate last season.

Culminating in a thrilling finals day at the Boleyn Ground in May, Redbridge U12s and West Ham United Kicks U14s took the honours, with both sides invited back to feature in the stylised SIM card imagery.

AN Under-16 West Ham United Community Sports Trust side scooped the 2014 Premier League Kicks Cup.

With the famous Hackney Marshes playing host to this year’s tournament on Saturday 11 October, some 47 clubs and 600 youngsters descended on east London to battle it out.

Ironically, this was the first time that all 47 clubs with Kicks programmes had been able to participate – bringing all four corners of the country together – and yet it was the local lads who reigned supreme.

Despite slipping to a 1-0 defeat by Newcastle United in their opening encounter, the Hammers came roaring back to top their group and then brush aside Blackburn Rovers 2-0 to lift the silverware.

Hammers youngster Sam Smith netted both the goals in the final and earn the boys in Claret and Blue the right to defend their Christmas Truce title in Ypres, Belgium, come December.

Smith was part of the triumphant party on the continent last year and revelled in Saturday’s victory so close to the Hammers’ future Stratford home.

“It feels amazing to win and I can’t wait to go back to Ypres and win again!” Smith said. “We started the day slowly but didn’t deserve to lose against Newcastle. To win it here, so close to the Olympic Stadium, makes it all the more special!”

As for the girls’ U18s tournament, West Ham’s representatives went close too, losing out to eventual winners Millwall in the semi-finals. The young Lions would go on to down Newcastle in the final.

WEST Ham United Community Sports Trust has teamed up with African Adventures for a second successive season to offer supporters the charity adventure of a lifetime in Kenya, next May.

From Saturday 23 May to Sunday 7 June 2015, the Trust team will spend ten days working in schools on the outskirts of Nakuru in south west Kenya.

The trip aims to raise funds for the Hammers’ Community Sports Trust, supporting outreach programmes

in local east London and Essex communities. Your stay in Africa will also support African Adventures’ partner projects in Kenya.

African Adventures’ Community Development Pledge provides resources and micro-finance to the multitude of projects it supports.

CARL JENKINSON

A FRIENDLY

FOECARL JENKINSON is looking forward to lining up against a familiar face when

West Ham United take on Manchester City

CARL Jenkinson spent the last three years battling it out with Bacary Sagna for the right-back berth at Arsenal, but now he is looking forward to lining up opposite the Frenchman as both players settle into life at their new clubs.

Jenkinson proved himself to be an able deputy to Sagna after arriving at the Emirates Stadium from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2011, making 37 Barclays Premier League appearances for the Gunners over that three-year spell prior to heading to West Ham United on loan this summer.

Sagna also moved away from north London over the close season, although his move was a permanent one as champions Manchester City came calling to end a seven-year Gunners career, which yielded 213 league appearances and an FA Cup winner’s medal.

Jenkinson, who was only 19 when he was signed from Charlton Athletic by Arsene Wenger, says Sagna was the ideal tutor to learn from as his own game developed and he is looking forward to putting that

gained knowledge into practice at the Boleyn Ground.

“I spent three years at Arsenal with Bacary and he’s a fantastic player,” he said. “He’s a fantastic man as well and I learned an awful lot from him.

“He was almost like a father figure to me in terms of that position. He was always there to lend advice. He’s so well respected at Arsenal because of how well he played over the years and he was one of the most consistent players in an Arsenal shirt for many years.

“He’s an experienced player and he played ahead of me for a large chunk of my last few seasons. Of course that’s a bit frustrating at times, but at the same time I just tried to learn as much as I could from the

guy, because he has been a top right-back for I don’t know how many years.

“That’s not easy to do, so I’ve got an awful lot of respect for Bacary. It’ll be nice lining up against him and hopefully I can get one over him today!”

TOOLS OF THE TRADEWHEN it comes to the trade of full-back, Jenkinson says the role has become far more all-encompassing in recent times, with the need to show attacking ability becoming just as important as a defensive solidity.

By supplying the cross for Enner Valencia’s stunning header at Burnley, as well as helping the team to vital wins over Queens Park Rangers and the Clarets this month, the 22-year-old is certainly showing his aptitude at both ends of the pitch.

He explained: “It was nice to play a part in a great win [at Burnley] and nice to get my first assist of the season too. I should have had one at Manchester United, but it was cancelled out for offside, which was annoying,

but I’ve got one now and hopefully I’ll get plenty more this season – and maybe a couple of goals as well. That’s my aim, and it was really nice to contribute in that way last weekend.

“I think that’s what full-backs have to do now. There’s many a full-back who can just defend, but what separates you from the rest is if you can get forward as well as getting back. You have to be able to do them both, and the top full-backs do that. Philipp Lahm is a great example – he gets back with such ease and plays with such confidence and quality.

“The two boys up there scored two fantastic headers to make it 2-0 on Saturday and it’s brilliant really because it’s a full-back’s dream to have strikers like that who are so good in the air. We’ve got Andy Carroll to come back too, who’s immense in the air.

“It’s good for a full-back who likes to get forward and get crosses in, to know you can put the ball into the box and you’ve got great quality in there who can put the ball away. It’s a good thing for me.

“On Saturday I looked up and I picked Valencia out, but you also know you can put the ball into

TODAY’S visit of Manchester City marks the Hammers’ annual Game of Action for the Kick It Out campaign.

For the 2014/15 campaign, the Club’s Kick It Out ambassador is Carl Jenkinson, with the on-loan Arsenal man only too happy to do his bit to help the charity’s continued work to stamp out discrimination in all parts of the game.

Nowhere is the multiculturalism of football more evident than in a Premier League squad, with nationalities, races and faiths from all over the world represented, and for Jenkinson, he is keen to promote the message of respect for all.

“The Kick It Out campaign is something that I can relate to and it’s one of the campaigns that stood out to me as a youngster growing up,” he explained. “I always recognised their logos and the campaigns when they took place.

“It was nice to be asked to be involved in something I can relate to and it’s about

encouraging equality between everyone. It has got a lot better in football over recent years – there’s still a long way to go but the work the Kick It Out campaign is doing is fantastic and it’s really contributing to improving that aspect. It’s a pleasure to be a part of it.

“The multicultural aspect of football is respected in England a lot more than in some other countries and we can be quite proud of that.

“In England all the different cultures and nationalities are well-respected and that’s a good thing. From being in and around the lads there’s respect for all of our teammates wherever you’re from, and no matter what colour your skin is. Everyone is treated exactly the same and that’s important.

“In recent years it’s improved a lot with the fans as well, and it’s fantastic to see because it hasn’t always been that way.”

an area when you have as good headers of the ball as that, because they’ll make something out of it.

“It’s a real attribute to have. They’ve got a lot of quality on the ball as they’ve already shown this season, but they’re very strong in the air as well, which is a great asset.”

OVERCOMING INJURYJENKINSON’S start to life at the Club was not an ideal one, as a hamstring injury suffered in the Schalke 04 Cup pre-season tournament against Malaga left him sidelined for six weeks just a matter of days after joining the Club.

However, the No18 refused to let the misfortune of a first muscle injury of his career get him down and his focus is on playing a full part as the Hammers look to build on their collective positive beginning to the campaign.

“I’m still not quite at 100 per cent but I’m getting there now” he said, “It was obviously a

frustrating start, but I feel like I’ve really found my feet now and I’m getting into a nice rhythm.

“I’m really enjoying my football at the moment. It was my first real muscle injury. I’ve never had any sort of muscular problem before, so it was strange and it obviously came at a terrible time, having just joined the Club.

“As it turned out, I only missed three games, which was a positive. It was a six-week injury, but with the international break and doing it two weeks before the start of the season, I didn’t miss too much.

FAST FACTBORN IN HARLOW, CARL GREW UP LOCALLY TO THE HAMMERS, AND MADE HIS FIRST STEPS IN FOOTBALL PLAYING FOR BELMONT JUNIORS IN CHIGWELL BEFORE JOINING THE CHARLTON ATHLETIC ACADEMY AT THE AGE OF EIGHT.

“It’s cleared up now so hopefully I’ll be fit and strong for the rest of the season. Of course it was annoying for it to happen so early into my time here, but you’ve just got to keep a strong mindset and keep focused.”

HITTING THE HEIGHTSCENTRAL to Jenkinson’s decision to join the Hammers on a season-long loan this summer was the prospect of getting a full season of Barclays Premier League football under his belt.

After averaging 12 top-flight appearances a season at Arsenal, the Harlow-born defender feels ready to take the next step of what has been a steep upward curve of a career by proving he is ready to become a regular starter at the highest level.

“Regular football at this level is massive for me this season” he insisted. “That’s why I came here. I think I could have stayed at Arsenal and had a similar season to those I’ve had previously, where maybe I’d play 15 or 20 games, but I want to be playing every single week.

“Hopefully I’ve got the platform here to do that because I know what I can do when I’m playing regularly, I’ve shown it in the past and it’s a lot easier to get yourself into a rhythm and express yourself when you’re playing week in, week out.

“All I want to do at my age is play week in, week out and enjoy my football.

“It’s been a rapid rise for me really. I went from Eastbourne to Arsenal in six months pretty much, which was crazy but fantastic. I’ve had three seasons there, playing in the Premier League and Champions League getting some fantastic experience.

“Now I’ve come to a big club like West Ham, where we’ve brought in some fantastic players and look like we’re going to have a strong and optimistic season. It’s been a great journey and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I’m still only young and hopefully this can be a big season and a massive part of the journey for me too.”

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU TELL ME?LAST season’s Premier League champions have assembled one of the strongest squad’s in Europe. Having won the title twice in the last three years, they have been transformed from ‘the noisy neighbours’ to arguably the bigger – and certainly the best – team in Manchester.

The priority now is very much focused on their performances in the UEFA Champions League. While tough draws have not helped their cause, a squad boasting the quality of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero would have hoped to

have done better than two group-stage and one Round of 16 exit.

Having won the league in his debut season in England, Manuel Pellegrini will be desperate to make his mark in Europe this term. The Chilean is an astute tactician who seems to have quietened the media circus that often surrounded Roberto Mancini’s City.

With European domination in Pellegrini’s sights, he has again been active in the transfer market, spending a relatively humble £50m on five new players. His former No1 at Malaga, Willy Caballero, has been brought in to provide competition for Joe Hart. At £32m, France defender Eliaquim Mangala has been earmarked as Vincent Kompany’s defensive partner. Defensive midfielder Fernando and right-back Bacary Sagna have been solid acquisitions.

Arguably the most effective signing thus far has been ex-Hammer Frank Lampard, whose four goals in five appearances have seen the 36-year-old pick up where he left off at former club Chelsea.

While City started the season

below their best, especially in a shock 1-0 home defeat by Stoke City, a run of five games unbeaten has seen them rise to second behind Jose Mourinho’s Blues.

Their main strength lies in their attacking capabilities. Argentina striker Aguero is unquestionably one of the best in world football. Having netted ten times already this season, Aguero appears to have overcome the niggling injuries that hampered him during this summer’s FIFA World Cup finals.

Partnering Aguero could be Edin Dzeko. The Bosnia & Herzegovina international is a skilful operator and, with height and strength, is a force to be reckoned with. Montenegrin Stevan Jovetic is now fit and is showing signs of fulfilling the huge potential he showed at Italian side Fiorentina.

Providing the strikers with the ammunition is a plethora of quality in midfield. Spain star David Silva is a match-winner in his own right, while he is just as capable at opening up defences and setting his team-mates up.

Having overcome birthday blues, Toure looks to be getting back to his best. The midfield machine is devastating in attack as well as dominating in his defensive duties – as he showed in City’s League Cup semi-final win over West Ham in January this year.

Elsewhere, James Milner is a player every club would love to have. His work-rate his second to none, while his passing and creativity are often overlooked. City also have considerable strength out wide from any combination of Samir Nasri, Jesus Navas, Gael Clichy, Sagna, Pablo Zabaleta and Aleksandar Kolarov.

Underpinning the whole operation is captain fantastic Kompany. The Belgium centre-back is a leader among men and skippered City to their two title wins.

Having climbed to the top of English football, the club’s Abu Dhabi-based owners now want to conquer Europe.

Before they recommence their UEFA Champions League challenge, however, Kompany and company are aiming to complete a ninth win in eleven meetings with the Hammers this afternoon.

GOALKEEPERSEngland international JOE HART is strangely more assured of his position at international level than he is with his club. Still just 27, Hart emerged with Shrewsbury Town, making more than 50 appearances for the Shropshire club while still a teenager. Signed by City for £100,000 in 2006, he was loaned to Tranmere Rovers, Blackpool and Birmingham City. It was his performances for the Blues in 2009/10 that saw him travel to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals. A three-times Premier League Golden Glove winner, he has won two titles, the FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield with City. Hart is approaching 50 caps for England, starting all of his country’s matches at Euro 2012 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.

Shaven-headed Argentine WILLY CABALLERO followed his former Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini to Manchester City in summer 2014. The 33-year-old began his career with Boca Juniors before moving to Spain with Elche in 2004. Caballero spent seven years at Elche – all of them in Spain’s Second Division – before joining Malaga

in 2011. An Olympic champion with Argentina in Athens in 2004, he made his Manchester City debut in a 7-0 League Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday on 24 September 2014, and his Premier League debut against Hull City three days later.

FULL-BACKSArgentina international PABLO ZABALETA has become something of a modern-day legend at Manchester City, being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year and voted the club’s Player of the Year in their title-winning season of 2012/13. The former RCD Espanyol man moved to

Manchester in summer 2008. He has a habit of scoring important goals, netting in a victory over West Ham United in May 2011 and again in the 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers that clinched the Barclays Premier League title in May 2012. Capped 45 times by Argentina, Zabaleta won an Olympic Gold medal in 2008 and was an ever-present at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.

Serbia international ALEXSANDAR KOLAROV is a strong, forceful and technically-gifted presence on the left side of defence or midfield. An attack-minded player with a cannon of a left foot, Kolarov is now in his fifth season with Manchester City. The 2011

Serbian Footballer of the Year was signed for a reported £16m from Italian side Lazio, with whom he won the Italian Cup and Supercup in 2009. Previously, the Belgrade-born player had played for Čukarički and OFK Beograd in his homeland. He has been capped more than 50 times by his country.

When fit, France international GAEL CLICHY is Manchester City’s first-choice left-back. Prior to moving to the Etihad in summer 2011, Clichy spent eight seasons with Arsenal after being spotted playing for French side Cannes, winning the Barclays Premier League title as part of the Gunners’ ‘Invincibles’ squad in 2003/04 and the FA Cup. Clichy has since added two more Premier League titles and the League Cup to his medal haul. Capped 20 times, the Toulouse-born defender travelled with his country to the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012.

Right-back BACARY SAGNA joined Manchester City from Arsenal in summer 2014, but has yet to become a first-team regular at the Etihad. A product of the AJ Auxerre academy, the Sens-born defender has twice been voted into the Barclays Premier League Team of the Year, but injuries have restricted his appearances in recent seasons. Sagna joined Arsenal in July 2007, going on to make more than 250 appearances for the Gunners, capped with a long-awaited trophy in the shape of the 2014 FA Cup.

Capped 42 times by France, Sagna appeared at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.

CENTRE-BACKSClub captain and 2011/12 Barclays Premier League Player of the Season VINCENT KOMPANY remains one of English football’s best defenders. The Belgium international is a strong, ball-playing centre-back who began his career with RSC Anderlecht, winning two Belgian league titles before spending two seasons with Hamburger SV, where he played alongside West Ham United’s Guy Demel. Kompany moved to Manchester in 2008 and, since then, he has lifted the Barclays Premier League trophy twice, the FA Cup and the Community Shield. He has 60 caps for Belgium and

appeared at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.

MARTIN DEMICHELIS is an experienced Argentina international centre-back who joined Manchester City in September 2013. Strangely, the 33-year-old had signed for Atletico Madrid just two months previously and left without making a single appearance for the Spanish club. Prior to that, Demichelis began his career with River Plate in his homeland before moving to Bayern Munich in 2003. During seven seasons in Germany, he won eleven trophies and played in the 2010 UEFA Champions League final defeat by Internazionale. Capped 42 times, Demichelis played under Manuel Pellegrini at Spanish club Malaga.

ELIAQUIM MANGALA, 23, is a France international centre-back who became Manchester City’s sixth signing of summer 2014 when he completed a £32m move from FC Porto. Born in Paris, Mangala moved to Belgium as a child, starting his professional career at Standard Liege in 2008. There, he won one league title, two Belgian Supercups and one Belgian Cup, leading to a move to Porto in 2011. There, he won two further league titles and featured regularly in European competition. Capped four times, he travelled to the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals but did not appear in Brazil.

MIDFIELDERSYAYA TOURE is an all-action Ivory Coast midfielder who arrived from Barcelona in summer 2010. After spells in Belgium, Ukraine, Greece and France, the tall and powerful midfielder spent three years with the Spanish giants, winning two league titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2009. He scored City’s winner as the club beat Stoke City to win the FA Cup in 2011 and was named in the Barclays Premier League Team of the Year after helping City to win the title the following season.

Spain playmaker DAVID SILVA has been truly outstanding since joining Manchester City from Valencia CF in summer 2010. Small and skilful, Silva is also a resilient player who is approaching the 200-appearance mark for the club. Capable of scoring and creating goals, Silva can operate in either central or wide areas. After seven seasons with Valencia, with whom he won the Spanish Cup in 2008, Silva has won the FA Cup and two Barclays Premier League titles with City. Capped 87 times by Spain, the 28-year-old has also won the FIFA World Cup and two UEFA European Championship titles with his country.

FERNANDINHO is a Brazil international midfielder who joined Manchester City from Ukrainian champions Shakhtar

Donetsk for a reported £30m in summer 2013. The 29-year-old had spent eight seasons with Shakhtar, where he was a long-time team-mate of former Hammer Razvan Rat. Capped five times by his country, the Londrina-born player started his career with Atlético Paranaense in his homeland. A FIFA World Youth Championship winner in 2003, Fernandinho won six league titles, four Ukrainian Cups, three Ukrainian Super Cups and the UEFA Cup with Shakhtar.

FERNANDO is the second player – Mangala being the other – to join Manchester City from FC Porto in summer 2014. The four-time Portuguese title winner is a 27-year-old defensive midfielder who fills the hole left by Spaniard Javi Garcia. After starting his career with Brazilian lower-division club Vila Nova, Fernando was snapped up by Porto in 2007 and immediately loaned to Estrela Amadora. He returned to Porto in 2008, winning 12 titles over the next seven years. A former Brazil U20 international, Fernando has since become a Portuguese citizen but is barred by FIFA rules from playing international football for Portugal.

Now 36, FRANK LAMPARD joined Manchester City on loan from MLS club New York City in summer 2014, having ended a 13-year association with Chelsea. Lampard needs no introduction to older West

Ham fans, having made 187 appearances in Caret and Blue prior to moving to Stamford Bridge in 2001. The midfielder won 13 trophies with the Blues, scoring a club-record 211 goals. He was capped 106 times by England, scoring 29 times and travelling to three FIFA World Cup finals. The 2005 FWA Footballer of the Year will remain at the Etihad until January 2015.

WINGERSAn often unheralded player, versatile England international JAMES MILNER joined Manchester City from Aston Villa for £26m in 2010. A hard-working and tenacious player, Milner came through the ranks at Leeds United before the club’s financial problems saw him depart for Newcastle United in 2004. After spending a season with Stewart Downing and James Collins at Villa Park,

Milner has lifted five trophies since joining the Citizens. At international level, the 28-year-old has been capped more than 50 times by England and appeared at two FIFA World Cup finals and Euro 2012.

SAMIR NASRI is versatile attacking midfielder who is equally at home out wide or in a central playmaking role. The Marseille-born player enjoyed an outstanding career with his hometown club in France before joining Arsenal in 2008. He moved to City for a reported £25m in summer 2011 after a breakthrough 2010/11 season with Arsenal. At international level, Nasri was capped 41 times, but retired from France duty after being overlooked for a place in his country’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad.

Spain international winger JESUS NAVAS joined Manchester City in summer 2013, having spent the entirety of his professional career with hometown club Sevilla. There, he won two UEFA Cups, a

European Super Cup and two Spanish Cups and totalled 388 first-team appearances. Predominantly right-sided, Navas is small, quick and direct. Capped more than 30 times by Spain, the 28-year-old was part of the squads that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012.

FORWARDSSERGIO AGUERO is a prolific forward blessed with a low centre of gravity and unerring accuracy in front of goal. The 26-year-old joined City following five outstanding seasons with Spanish club Atletico Madrid in summer 2011. Since then, he has scored more than 80 goals in all competitions, including the strike that clinched the Barclays Premier League title against Queens Park Rangers in May 2012. Aguero has been capped more than 50 times by Argentina, winning the Olympic Gold medal in 2008 and appearing at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup finals.

EDIN DZEKO is a Bosnia &

Herzegovina striker who has scored goals regularly since moving to Manchester City from German side VfL Wolfsburg in January 2011. Despite being used often as a substitute, Dzeko managed 14 Barclays Premier League goals in each of his first two seasons with City. He topped those hauls with 26 in all competitions last term. A talisman for his country, Dzeko helped Bosnia & Herzegovina qualify for their first-ever major tournament, the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals, scoring the opener in their historic 3-1 group-stage win over Iran.

STEVAN JOVETIC is a Montenegro international deep-lying forward who became one of the most coveted players in Europe during a five-year spell with Italian club Fiorentina. After starting his career with Partizan in Serbia, the 24-year-old moved to Serie A in 2008. The forward impressed greatly at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, scoring 40 goals in 134 appearances. However, injuries have slowed his progress since his £22m move to Manchester in summer 2013. Jovetic was just 17 when he played in Montenegro’s first-ever international fixture against Hungary in March 2007 and he has since scored 12 goals and earned 30 caps.

THE POSSIBLE LINE-UP

THE FORMATIONIN a day and age where three and five-man defences, front-threes and diamond formations are all the rage, Manchester City have played with a refreshingly traditional 4-4-2 system for the majority of the current season.

As has always been the case, the 4-4-2 relies on versatile full-backs, strong centre-backs, all-round central midfielders, creative wide players and a productive forward partnership.

As you would expect of a club which has spent upwards of £500m on new players, City have all of the above at their disposal.

Last weekend, however, Manuel Pellegrini opted for a 4-2-3-1 shape, with David Silva supporting central striker Sergio Aguero. The result was a 4-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur and four goals for the Argentine striker.

Whether or not the Chilean manager sticks with that system or reverts back to playing with two centre forwards remains to be seen.

THE PLAYING STYLEAS you would expect from the

champions, Manchester City play an aggressive, powerful, possession-based style of football.

City’s top-quality players enjoy 57% of possession on average – second only to Arsenal – and completed an outstanding 86.8% of their passes.

Unsurprisingly, when City have the ball they make good use of it, unleashing a league-best 16 shots per game on the opposition goal, five of which usually either end up in the net or test the goalkeeper.

With potential match-winners all over the pitch, City’s attacking style is varied and balanced.

Pellegrini’s side can create chances with their short passing game and defence-splitting through balls, while West Ham fans know only too well the sight of central midfielder Yaya Toure rampaging down the middle of the pitch with the ball at his feet.

Meanwhile, the likes of David Silva and Sergio Aguero are adept at using their low centres of gravity and perfectly-honed technical skills to open up space in and around the opposition penalty area.

Add in Edin Dzeko’s aerial ability, two attacking full-backs and City’s propensity to take one in three shots from outside the penalty area, and you have a team that is extremely dicult to stop.

THE PLAYERSMANCHESTER City have a very strong squad, but the below are the most likely starters this afternoon.

Joe Hart appears to have won the battle to start in goal for now, at least. The England international may make the odd error, but he is a confident figure who makes spectacular saves look routine.

In defence, former Arsenal duo Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy started at full-back against Spurs. Both are experienced campaigners now at 31 and 29 respectively and use the ball intelligently.

At centre-back, Kompany is likely to be partnered by Argentine Martin Demichelis. While the South American has attracted some criticism, he is trusted by his former Malaga manager Pellegrini and has started five of City’s opening eight league matches.

With Frank Lampard injured, Yaya Toure is likely to be recalled to the starting XI after arriving from the bench against Spurs. The Ivorian is a strong all-round force, as West Ham fans are no doubt aware.

Toure is likely to be partnered by Brazilian defensive midfielder Fernandinho.

Ahead of them, James Milner is a versatile yet talented player who can play anywhere across the midfield. Indeed, the England man’s versatility mean he is often under-rated, as he is good in possession, delivers fine set pieces and makes a relentless defensive contribution.

On the other wing, Jesus Navas is a speedy, old-fashioned winger who loves to hit the byline and cross for his colleagues.

Aguero is at the top of his game up front. With nine goals in eight league appearances, the Argentine is an unerringly accurate finisher with either foot, can beat his man at will and makes chances for his team-mates.

Sergio Aguero is at the top of his game

US AND THEMA closer look at the links between West Ham United and MANCHESTER CITY

DID YOU KNOW…• West Ham United and Manchester City sit eleventh and tenth in the all-time Premier League table respectively. West Ham have collected 863 points from 700 matches played, while City have amassed 965 points from 666 matches played.

• Today’s game marks the 99th competitive meeting between the two sides. West Ham have won 35, Manchester City have won 47 and there have been 16 draws.

• In the Premier League, Manchester City have won 14 of the 26 meetings, with West Ham triumphing on seven occasions and five matches being drawn.

• Jack Collison scored West Ham’s most-recent winner against Manchester City, netting in a 1-0 Premier League victory here on 1 March 2009. Since then, West Ham have not won any of the ten meetings between the two clubs in all competitions.

• West Ham have not scored more than one goal in any of their previous 19 matches against Manchester City – the last occasion being a 2-1 FA Cup sixth-round win at the City of Manchester Stadium on 20 March 2006, when Dean Ashton netted both goals.

• West Ham’s largest Premier League victory over Manchester City came on 11 November 2000, when Paolo Di Canio, Trevor Sinclair, Steve Lomas and Ian Pearce scored in a 4-1 home win.

• West Ham’s biggest home and away victories over Manchester City both came in the same season – 1962/63. A 6-1 away Division One success on 8 September 1962 was followed by victory by the same scoreline here on 18 May 1963 – a result that relegated the Citizens.

• The biggest crowd ever to witness a West Ham versus Manchester City fixture at the Boleyn Ground was the 35,050 who turned out for a goalless Premier League draw on 21 September 2002.

• Tony Cottee is the only West Ham player to score a hat-trick against Manchester City. His treble fired the Hammers to a 3-0 Premier League win at the Boleyn Ground on 17 December 1994.

• Peter Dobing scored hat-tricks for Manchester City in both Division One meetings with West Ham in 1961/62.

• Manchester City have twice recorded 4-0 victories at the Boleyn Ground – both in the old Division One on 24 March 1962 and 6 December 1969.

• Mauro Zarate and Sergio Aguero were strike partners as Argentina won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007. Aguero won the Golden Boot by scoring six times, while Zarate scored the winning goal in the 2-1 final victory over Czech Republic.

• A number of West Ham players have played alongside Manchester City counterparts at previous clubs – Alex Song with Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri (Arsenal), James Collins and Stewart Downing with James Milner (Aston Villa), Jussi Jaaskelainen with Dedryk Boyata (Bolton Wanderers), Carlton Cole and Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Andy Carroll with Milner (Newcastle United) and Mauro Zarate with Aleksandar Kolarov (Lazio).

DEBUTS…• Sixteen players have made their first-team debuts for West Ham United against Manchester City – Robert Dixon (March 1929), Stan Burton, Cliff Hubbard (both May 1939), Don Travis (May 1947), Joe Kirkup (December 1958), Frank Lampard (November 1967), Stephen De’ath (September 1969), Jimmy Greaves, David Llewellyn (both March 1970), Graham Paddon (December 1973), Eamonn Dolan (May 1987), Paul Marquis (February 1994), Neil Finn (January 1996), Fredrik Ljungberg, Craig Bellamy (both August 2007) and Jordan Spence (May 2010).

• Neil Finn became and still remains West Ham United’s youngest-ever Premier League player, having made his debut at the age of 17 years and three days in a 2-1

defeat at Maine Road on New Year’s Day 1996. It would be his sole appearance for the Hammers.

• Striker Jimmy Greaves enjoyed a dream debut, scoring twice in a 5-1 Division One win over Manchester City at Maine Road on 21 March 1970. Fellow debutant David Llewellyn made the first of just six appearances off the substitutes’ bench in the same fixture.

THEY PLAYED FOR BOTH…• Frank Lampard began his professional career at West Ham, making 187 league and cup appearances and scoring 38 goals before heading to Chelsea in June 2001. He won 12 trophies and scored a club record 211 goals for the Blues before joining New York City FC in summer 2014. He joined Manchester City on a six-month loan in August.

• Richard Wright signed for West Ham United in July 2007 following his release by Everton. The goalkeeper did not make a first-team appearance for the Hammers and, after being loaned to Southampton in March 2008, joined Ipswich Town in July of the same year. He has yet to appear for Manchester City, having joined the club on a free transfer in August 2012.

• Other players to have turned out for both clubs include Clive Allen, Tal Ben Haim, Craig Bellamy, Eyal Berkovic, Wayne Bridge, Ian Bishop, James Cumming, Justin Fashanu, Marc-Vivien Foe, Kevin Horlock, Michael Hughes, David James, Patrick Leonard, Steve Lomas, Tyrone Mears, Trevor Morley, John Payne, Stuart Pearce, Trevor Sinclair, Perry Suckling, Carlos Tevez, Paulo Wanchope, Mark Ward, Lionel Watson, George Webb and Phil Woosnam.

• Former West Ham centre-back Malcolm Allison joined Manchester City as assistant manager in 1965. Under the guidance of Allison and manager Joe Mercer, the club enjoyed a sustained period of success, winning the Division One title in 1968, the FA Cup in 1969 and both the League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. After taking over from Mercer in 1971, Allison resigned in March 1973, later returning to Maine Road for a second spell in charge between 1979-80.

VIEW ON THE VISITORS

Second in the Barclays Premier League after the first eight games, but third in their UEFA Champions League group, how would you assess Manchester City’s start to the season?

“City have not had a sparkling start to the season, but they are actually a point better off in the Premier League than they were at this stage last season – it is just that Chelsea’s explosive start has made it look worse, by contrast. There is a lot of doom and gloom about the Champions League, and the performances have not been good enough, but I still think the Blues are slight favourites to finish second behind Bayern.”

Last weekend’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur showcased yet again the threat of Sergio Aguero. How integral is he to City’s play?

“He is one of s small handful of truly world-class players City have. The fact that he

missed around half of last season through injury and still scored 30 goals tells you what you need to know. He is a nightmare for defenders – he scored four against Spurs but missed a penalty and two other great chances – he should really have broken the Premier League record!”

Midweek involved a long trip to CSKA Moscow and the disappointment of letting a two-goal lead slip. Do you think that might affect City against West Ham?

“City have developed a knack of bouncing back strongly after setbacks, but a long trip to West Ham is not the ideal game after such a horrible midweek trip, especially with the start the Hammers have made to the season. I suspect a few changes might freshen things up a bit.”

After four victories over West Ham last season, do you expect a sterner examination this time around given the Hammers’ start to the campaign?

“Absolutely. Sam appears to have a much stronger team this time, with one or two good signings, and the League Cup games are a distant memory. The 6-0 at the Etihad was the kind of thing City can do to most other teams, and that killed the two-legged tie – but I doubt we will see that many goals this season.”

After winning the Premier League last season, it looks like Chelsea will pose the main threat to City’s title defence. What do you think Manuel Pellegrini’s men need to do to secure a third championship in four years?

“They just need to find their feet again after a bitty start to the season. Last season midfield was City’s main strength – they were better in that department than both Chelsea and Liverpool in my opinion. But Yaya Toure has had a fairly ordinary start to the campaign, Fernando is still settling in, Fernandinho has more to come, and your old boy Frank Lampard has been used sparingly. When they click, Chelsea will have a real fight on their hands.”

West Ham United have invited world-leading movement coach FRANS BOSCH to improve the players’ athleticism

WEST Ham United hope their players develop all the right moves by working with world-renowned movement coach Frans Bosch.

The Dutchman, who has worked with several Dutch national sporting federations and the Wales national rugby union team, among others, is a pioneer in the field of running.

Bosch first visited Chadwell Heath in summer 2014, when he hosted a masterclass with Head of Medical and Sports Science Stijn Vandenbroucke and his team. Since then, he has been reviewing video footage of West Ham players with a view to improving their athletic movement and reduce their risk of being injured.

This month, Bosch returned to Essex to work with a group of players, analysing a variety of different running styles and patterns and offering his expertise on how each can improve and benefit in a number of areas, including injury prevention, speed and agility.

“Frans initially came in just before pre-season began in June because we were keen to work with him and implement his ideas into our physiotherapy and sports science,” head physiotherapist Dominic Rogan confirmed. “The aim is to give our lads the edge, improve their performance and to keep them injury-free.

“Frans’ most-recent visit saw him work with a group of fit players on their running, which is the bread and butter of football. If we can improve that basic movement skill, then the players can enjoy massive benefits.”

RUNNING WITH ITSPORTS scientist and fitness coach Eamon Swift said Bosch’s reputation for improving individuals within a team sport environment was another major reason to want to work with him.

“We came across Frans primarily because of his work in running, but also because of his work with the Welsh Rugby Union in a team sport dynamic, which of course has relevance to our own sport.

“From a sports science point of view, we are interested in how his methods make athletes more resilient and robust in what they do. We have brought Frans in to pick his brains and see how we can apply his methods at West Ham.”

Bosch himself was only too happy to share his ideas and methods with the West Ham staff, explaining that players would benefit from learning how to get the most out of their bodies.

“The body is designed to protect itself and the way it protects itself is how it makes movement proficient – they are the same thing,” Bosch began. “In team sports, whether it be football, rugby or Australian Rules, the players have incredible skills when it comes to handling the ball, but when it comes to handling their own bodies, they are not so good.

“This is the biggest deficit we have in team sports. It has to go to a higher level and we have to develop a better understanding of how the body protects itself and makes itself efficient. That is what we are trying to do here.”

Rogan agreed that helping players to move more efficiently would not only improve their performance, but also reduce their chances of being injured.

“Performance, physical capabilities and injuries are on the same spectrum. When you are moving inefficiently, then you are not going to perform very well and you are also pushing yourself closer to getting injured.

“On the flip side, if you become

Frans Bosch with Dominic Rogan and Eamon Swift

The Dutchman visited Chadwell Heath earlier this month

BACK ROOM BOYS

an efficient mover, you will see an increase in performance level and also move away from that risk of injury.”

ANALYSISSWIFT said that, having sent Bosch footage of a number of players running, the Hammers were already benefitting from the weaknesses that he had identified in their movements.

“We sent Frans the footage and he did a very good analysis of what he felt were either risk factors for injury or limitations in performance, so as Dominic said, we do not treat them as separate entities in terms of performance or injury, but put them in the same context.

“Frans used his expertise to give us some pointers on some areas that we should target for our players to make them more resilient and improve their performance as individuals.”

With the ever-increasing speed of the modern game, Bosch said clubs could not afford to ignore the importance of athleticism by concentrating on technical skills and tactical drills.

“It is very interesting that sports like football and rugby are getting quicker and quicker and therefore athleticism becomes more and more important, so clubs shouldn’t back away from this subject,” said the Dutchman.

“Athleticism is what decided the FIFA World Cup in 2014 – it was not skills or ball handling,

but what the players could do off the ball.”

Speaking to the players, who were clearly enthralled by the methods being imparted on them, Bosch told them how the new athletic movements would become as natural to them as their technical abilities already are.

“My background is not just in bio-mechanics and athletics, but also in motor learning and what we know is that the best performance does not come from conscious decisions and conscious movement,” he explained.

“What we try to do is to find ways of addressing these issues without them being conscious of what they are doing, but rather bring them into situations where the body finds out ‘This is much better for me’.

“Once you do that, the movements pop up during a match and they can use their brains for other decision-making and tactical things.

“The way we teach this is also very important – not to talk to the player for hours, but to explain the movement and the benefit and let their bodies realise ‘These are much better for me’.

“In football, if your players become quicker over a short distance, they can beat their opponent to the ball, and how often does that situation occur in a match?”

“You need to address the areas of athleticism where you can make an advantage over your opponent. Each small advantage you can take adds up to something massive.”

GAINING AN EDGESWIFT said he and his colleagues could see an immediate and positive reaction from the players after they had taken part in Bosch’s drills.

“Frans used cues and phrases

which weren’t too descriptive but gave the players basic information and you could see a very quick change in the way they performed the movement, as well as an acknowledgement of how they felt they had moved quicker or better than they had before.

“We hope these drills will become part of how we warm the players up and we will see where it goes.”

While the immediate benefits were felt by the players after just a handful of Bosch’s drills, Rogan said the staff hopes to see the longer-term benefits of better results and a shorter injury list.

“The modern-day game is decided by tiny margins so if you can gain an edge in any way, that can widen those margins in your favour,” he added.

“Injury statistics are widely available and the reality is that the number of injuries is going up. We and every other club has been trying interventions for years to reduce injuries, but results don’t lie and we’ve not been reducing injures.

“We therefore have to try something new and that is reason enough to invest fully in these methods. With the co-operation of the players and staff, we hope we will reap the dividends.”

QUEENS PARK RANGERS (H)West Ham United chalked up their second home win in succession by beating Harry

Redknapp’s Hoops

THE REPORTDIAFRA Sakho made it a goal in each of his first five starts for West Ham United to help Sam Allardyce’s side to a comfortable victory over Queens Park Rangers.

Sakho nodded in the Hammers’ second goal to help the hosts climb into the top seven and leave Harry Redknapp’s Hoops bottom of the Barclays Premier League table.

After beating Liverpool in their previous Boleyn Ground fixture, West Ham took just five minutes to take the lead against the Championship Play-Off final winners.

However, the hosts’ opener owed much to good fortune as Stewart Downing’s right-wing corner cleared Enner Valencia and flew into the net via the knee of QPR defender Nedum Onuoha.

Valencia himself missed a chance to double the lead as West Ham dominated for long periods, but QPR did threaten during their sporadic counter-attacks.

Charlie Austin fired one effort wide and was denied by Adrian, who was able to celebrate a first clean sheet of the season come the final whistle.

Having maintained their advantage, West Ham doubled their lead just before the hour-mark when Sakho nodded in James Tomkins’ looping cross.

Substitute Kevin Nolan could have added a third, but saw his effort saved by former team-mate Robert Green late on. Referee: Anthony Taylor (Greater Manchester)

BURNLEY (A)West Ham United weathered an early storm

before heading to victory at Turf Moor

THE REPORTWEST Ham United weathered an early Burnley storm before heading to a deserved 3-1 victory at Turf Moor.

The hard-earned success, secured through headed goals from Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia and Carlton Cole, presented manager Sam Allardyce with a deserved early 60th birthday present.

That seemed unlikely when the newly-promoted Clarets made a fast start, capped by George Boyd thumping a shot against the crossbar and the returning Danny Ings having a tap-in correctly ruled out for offside.

Stewart Downing went close with a rasping shot before Sakho again took centre-stage four minutes after half-time. The Senegalese striker was in the right place at the right time yet again to nod in Aaron Cresswell’s left-wing cross and score his sixth goal in six starts.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 as Carl Jenkinson curled over from the right and Valencia craned his neck to power the ball past Tom Heaton from 12 yards.

Burnley gave themselves a glimmer of hope on the hour-mark when Boyd fired home after Adrian failed to catch Michael Kightly’s corner. Moments later, Ings headed inches wide, but West Ham would not be denied.

Substitute Cole showed bravery to dive in front of Heaton and head Sakho’s knock-down into the net with 20 minutes to go.

There was still time for Ashley Barnes to hit the woodwork from right-back Kieran Trippier’s excellent cross, but the Hammers held on securely to rise to fourth in the Barclays Premier League table. Referee: Kevin Friend (Bristol)

HAMMERABILIA

PLAY UP WEST HAMFOLLOWING their flirtation with relegation from Southern League Division One the previous season, West Ham United climbed to a respectable ninth place in 1909/10.

The playing staff had increased dramatically, with 13 players making their debuts over the course of the campaign. The contingent of locally-produced talent like Tommy Randall, Danny Shea and George Webb were joined by Thomas Caldwell, Robert Fairman and Robert Whiteman.

Shea, who scored six goals in the first three games, including a hat-trick against Brentford, went on to set a new club record of 28 league goals in a season, two more were added in the FA Cup run which culminated in the Hammers reaching the third round proper for the first time before losing a replay at Queens Park Rangers.

The following season, West Ham were at it again, beating three Football League clubs – Nottingham Forest, Preston North End and Manchester United – before losing 3-2 to Blackburn Rovers in the quarter-finals.

This Manchester United souvenir postcard was given away with ‘The Hammers Gazette’, the official West Ham United programme, dated 25 February 1911.

The Red Devils ended the season by winning the Football League Championship.

Danny Shea’s 25 goals made him the Southern League’s leading marksman that season as the Hammers finished a creditable fifth.

CHOCOLATE FOOTBALLERSIN 1909, the chocolatiers H.J. Packer & Co Ltd – founded in Bristol in 1881 – issued a series of miniature cards entitled ‘Packer’s Chocolate Sports Mixture’ and featured Hammers goalkeeper George Kitchen and the Club’s leading goalscorer Danny Shea.

The cards are seldom found in good condition and invariably they are either torn or defaced due to the way they were distributed – stuck-down to the outside of the chocolate wrapping.

Nonetheless, these small confectionery gems are one of the rarest sets to feature West Ham players and would set you back a sumptuous £70 each.

Kitchen was also featured in a series of 100 ‘Association Football Club Colours’ issued by the Belfast-based tobacco company Gallaher Ltd in 1909/10.

The coloured action drawings with a brief history on the reverse may not be brilliant, but the obscure coverage of teams and players depicted makes it both an attractive and informative series.

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOMEFROM the turn of the 20th century up until the 1927/28 season, charity fund matches were a regular feature in the West Ham United fixture calendar come October-November time as an ongoing fundraiser for local good causes.

In the early days, these fixtures were often against southern opposition such as Southampton and Portsmouth, while the Hammers competed for their first ‘Southern Professional Charity’ medal in 1901/02 against Millwall Athletic.

The game was arranged to take place on home soil at the Memorial Grounds, where goals from Fergus Hunt and William Grassam secured a 2-1 success.

A name change in 1909-10 to ‘London Professional Football Charity Fund’ would see the Hammers face London opposition on a regular basis.

The two medals shown were both awarded to Danny Shea in 1909/10 and 1910/11. West Ham’s opposition on both occasions were Leyton, who were beaten 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.

GET WITH THE PROGRAMME

WHEN West Ham United faced Manchester City on Saturday 7 November 1959 at the Boleyn Ground, the Hammers were third in Division One, while City were in mid-table.

The programme produced was a pocket-sized 12-page issue with a claret cover, while the rest of the content was black and white. The photograph on the front cover showed the Main Stand, which was demolished at the turn of the century and replaced by what is now the Alpari Stand.

Inside the programme was a three-page welcome to the visitors, including details of the previous season’s meetings – most notably a 5-1 home win for the Hammers.

There was also news that the first-ever Hammer of the Year, ‘Mr Dependable’ Andy Malcolm was scheduled to make his 100th consecutive league appearance against the Citizens, having played in every league game in the previous two seasons.

For the visit of City, West Ham made one change to the previous weekend, with the injured Vic Keeble being replaced by Harry Obeney. After suffering from a string of injuries, the prolific forward and 1958 Division Two title winner was forced to retire aged 29.

Keeble’s replacement, Obeney, made his first appearance of the season in front of 25,243 fans. At half-time, the home side were two goals ahead courtesy of an own goal and a penalty from Irish international full-back Noel Cantwell. Further goals from

Bethnal Green-born Obeney and Malcolm Musgrove gave the Hammers a 4-1 victory, moving them up to second in the league.

The return fixture was on Wednesday 30 March 1960. The Hammers had slipped to a mid-table position, losing 7-0 at Sheffield Wednesday in November 1959. West Ham lost their final 12 away league games to slip to a finishing position of 14th.

City’s own big news was the signing of 20-year-old Scottish forward Denis Law from Huddersfield Town for a then-British record transfer fee of £55,000. Law had scored on his debut the previous weekend in a 4-3 defeat by Leeds.

Law remained at City until the summer of 1961, when he joined Italian club Torino for a record fee between English and Italian clubs. After a difficult season, he returned to Manchester for another English record transfer fee of £115,000, joining United rather than City.

West Ham had a new player of their own, with Dave Dunmore joining from Tottenham Hotspur in exchange for John Smith. Dunmore had made his debut in the previous game against Blackburn Rovers and went on to make 36 League appearances, scoring 16 goals, before leaving for Leyton Orient in an exchange for 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup final hero Alan Sealey.

City produced a 16-page programme costing four old pence which featured an aerial shot of Maine Road,

with the boast that the ground could provide covered accommodation for 50,000 spectators. The programme consisted of a large number of advertisements and little reading matter although there was a useful list of the appearances and goalscorers.

West Ham opened the scoring after ten minutes through Musgrove in front of 29,572 fans, beating legendary City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann. The Hammers maintained their lead until half-time thanks to their own stopper, Brian Rhodes, making a fine penalty save.

However, Law levelled six minutes into the second half and Colin Barlow put City ahead straight from the restart. Billy McAdams sealed the win late on.

The Hammers finished the season in 14th position, while a late flurry from City moved them up to 16th.

ON THIS DAY

WHAT’S IN A DATE?

25 OCTOBER1968 FORMER West Ham full-back David Burrows was born.

Having begun his career at local club West Bromwich Albion, he played 46 league games before moving to Liverpool in October 1988. Burrows enjoyed five successful seasons with the Reds, winning the First Division Championship in 1990 and the FA Cup in 1992. During this time he won seven England Under-21 caps and three ‘B’ caps.

In September 1993 he signed for West Ham in a swap deal that took Julian Dicks to Liverpool. Burrows made his Hammers debut in the 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers. After making 35 appearances, he left to join Everton in September 1994 but six months later moved to Coventry City for a £1.1 million fee.

In 2000, after failing to retain his place in the side, he joined Birmingham City on a free transfer. His made 25 league appearances before another free transfer took him to Sheffield Wednesday in 2002. Injuries marred his playing time as a collarbone injury forced him to retire in May 2003.

1980 THE Hammers were on an unbeaten run of eleven league games when they entertained Bolton Wanderers at the Boleyn Ground.

Without the services of Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard, West Ham were on top in the first half and they took the lead

just before the interval through an own goal. Two minutes into the second half Jimmy Neighbour’s cross was rifled home

by Geoff Pike for his first goal of the campaign.

Seven minutes from time the visitors pulled one goal back despite protests that Phil Parkes had been fouled. The Hammers won 2-1 and went on to become Second Division champions having only lost four league games.

1983 ONLY 10,896 spectators were present to witness West Ham’s record win as they demolished Bury 10-0 in

the League Cup. After leading the Fourth

Division side 2-1 from the first leg, the tie was still in the balance. Teenager Tony Cottee scored an impressive four goals, opening the scoring in the second minute, yet Bury had the chance to equalise but John Bramhall’s spot kick rebounded off a post.

After that it was all West Ham as Trevor Brooking and Alan Devonshire scored twice. Billy Bonds and Alvin Martin both scored with headers and penalty king Ray Stewart scored from the spot.

1987 MANCHESTER United came to London knowing they had not won at the Boleyn Ground since 1967, a staggering run of 15 visits without a win.

WEST HAM UNITED – ON THIS DAY AUTHOR JOHN NORTHCUTT LOOKS BACK AT THE BIG MOMENTS IN HAMMERS HISTORY

The game failed to ignite but on the stroke of half time a free kick from Colin Gibson gave

the Red Devils the lead.West Ham fought back in the

second half and on 68 minutes Paul McGrath fouled Mark Ward and from the resultant penalty Ray Stewart scored the equaliser. Once again Manchester United were thwarted as the game finished 1-1.

2009 THE big London derby at home to Arsenal started badly for the Hammers when Robin van Persie put the Gunners ahead after 16 minutes. Worse was to follow on 37 minutes when William Gallas headed home to put the Arsenal in control.

West Ham started the second half with great determination and on 74 minutes following an Alessandro Diamanti free kick Carlton Cole was on hand to reduce the arrears.

Six minutes later the Hammers were level as Alex Song brought down Cole in the area. Amid great excitement, Diamanti scored from the spot to complete the comeback. The game ended with a 2-2 scoreline but it felt more like a win for the happy Hammers.

50 GREATEST GAMES

THE

The Official Programme counts down the 50 most memorable matches in the 110-year history of the Boleyn Ground

WHILE many younger fans may not be aware of this fact, English football did in fact exist before the introduction of the Barclays Premier League in the summer of 1992!

The ‘old’ Division One, as it is now known, was this country’s top-flight from the Football League’s inception in 1888 for the next 104 years.

West Ham United joined in 1919, entering what was then the Second of two divisions, before gaining promotion to Division One for the first time in 1923.

In all, the Hammers spent 38 seasons in the ‘old’ Division One, being relegated in 1932, 1978 and 1989 and promoted again in 1958 and 1991.

West Ham’s final season in the original Football League Division One was 1991/92, but it is one that most Hammers supporters would quite happily forget – save for a few brief but notable highlights.

A miserable campaign saw the Hammers win just nine of their 42 league matches – the top-flight comprised 22 teams in those days – and score just 37 goals.

Billy Bonds’ side never featured in the top half of the table after the end of August, with the tenth place achieved after a 3-1 home win over Aston Villa in their

fourth fixture raising them to that pinnacle.

Indeed, the opening four games provided false hope for Hammers supporters as West Ham drew at home with Luton Town and away at Sheffield United before recovering from a 2-0 defeat at Wimbledon to beat Villa.

SOME FINE RESULTSWHILE subsequent victories were few and far between, Bonds’ Hammers did chalk up some fine results in what was an otherwise horrendous nine months – a 2-1 home win over Tottenham Hotspur on 26 October, a 1-0 victory at Arsenal the following weekend and a 4-0 thrashing of Norwich City at the Boleyn Ground on 11 April 1992.

By then, however, the Hammers were nine points adrift of safety

with just four matches remaining and all but consigned to relegation.

The same weekend as West Ham’s downing of the Canaries, Manchester United were beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the Rumbelows Cup final at Wembley, with the winner being scored by Scotland striker Brian McClair. Amazingly, the win secured the Football League Cup for Manchester United for the first time in their history.

Alex Ferguson’s side had also won the European Super Cup the previous November, with leading scorer McClair again on target in a 1-0 success against European Cup holders Red Star Belgrade.

In Division One, the Red Devils found themselves a point behind leaders Leeds United with six games to play – two more than their title rivals.

Ferguson’s men had already knocked Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds out of both domestic cup competitions, while both league meetings between the cross-Pennines rivals had ended in 1-1 draws.

Manchester United should have been confident of ending their 25-year title drought, with the likes of new signing Peter Schmeichel in goal, England stars Bryan Robson and Neil Webb in midfield, CIS international Andrei Kanchelskis and a teenage Ryan Giggs flying down the wings and McClair and Mark Hughes up front.

Kanchelskis’ goal secured a 1-0 win over Luton which took them above Leeds with a game in hand.

However, fixture congestion ahead of the 1992 UEFA European Championship finals meant the Red Devils had to play four games in seven days, culminating in a trip to face the doomed Hammers on Wednesday 22 April.

In between Ferguson’s men stumbled, drawing 1-1 at Luton Town before relinquishing top spot by losing 2-1 at Nottingham Forest.

At the same time, West Ham had failed to score in three straight defeats and were, barring a mathematical miracle, condemned to Division Two.

For Ferguson and his tired side, a visit to the Boleyn Ground was just the tonic they needed to rekindle their faltering title challenge.

‘IT’S NO GOOD CRYING’WHILE the Red Devils travelled south full of expectation that they would grab the win they so badly needed, Bonds insisted that his players would not roll over, despite their near-hopeless predicament.

“We will be doing our best to beat Manchester United and salvage some pride from a disappointing season,” wrote Bonds.

“We owe to you, the fans, to keep going until the final whistle of our final game. The players still have to earn their wages in these remaining games.

“If we do go down, it’s no good crying over spilt milk. We have to look and plan ahead to the future and try to put it right and bounce back as quickly as we can.”

Despite their recent defeats, Manchester United still arguably had the upper hand in the title race, sitting a point behind Leeds with a game in hand on their Yorkshire rivals.

A victory at the same stadium where they had secured the title in 1967 would make them odds-on favourites to lift the trophy again.

The Manchester United of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law thrashed West Ham 6-1 a quarter of a century earlier, but would things be as easy for them this time around?

In a word, no.

BROWN’S MAXIMUM BREAKWITHOUT the injured England trio of Robson, Paul Parker and Paul Ince, Ferguson left out Webb and Kanchelskis in opting for a defensive side that included Mike Phelan and Clayton Blackmore in central midfield.

While the nervous visitors played with hesitancy, the home side produced a more fluent performance no doubt aided by the pressure of their lost relegation battle having all but disappeared.

Schmeichel, who would win Euro 92 with Denmark later that summer, produced first-half saves from Mike Small and Kevin Keen to keep the game scoreless, while Ferguson’s men could not muster a single shot on goal.

Into the second half and being roared on by the bumper 24,917-strong crowd, the Hammers continued to hold the upper hand.

Stuart Slater hit a post before West Ham’s enterprise was finally rewarded on 66 minutes through the unlikely figure of Kenny Brown.

Slater’s cross was diverted into the path of the 24-year-old son of West Ham legend Ken – who was watching on from the stands – by Gary Pallister and Brown drove his volley unerringly past Schmeichel.

On the same evening that Jimmy ‘The Whirlwind’ White compiled a maximum 147 break at the World Snooker Championship, Brown had produced his own moment of sporting greatness.

Manchester United attempted a late comeback through Hughes and Giggs, but neither they nor McClair nor substitute Kanchelskis could find a way past Ludek Miklosko and his determined defenders.

Even now, the first question Brown is asked by West Ham fans is about that goal.

“It was under the lights, an electric atmosphere and a full house,” Brown recalled. “We were all but relegated but the fans were behind us straight from kick-off.

“Ludo was never going to concede and we got the break with the goal. It was a great night after a disappointing season.”

Despite Brown’s heroics, West Ham’s relegation was confirmed by a 1-0 defeat at Coventry City three days later, while the Red Devils’ title challenge ended with a 2-0 defeat at Liverpool that handed the championship to Leeds.

So, while the final season of ‘old’ Division One football may have been a disappointing one overall, it did provide West Ham fans with one of the most memorable moments in this famous stadium’s long and illustrious history.

THINGS are going great. Sam Allardyce is no longer the pantomine villain. Our strikers can’t stop scoring. And we are FOURTH in the Barclays Premier League.

So, just when you thought the boo boys had finally disappeared, along came Frank Lampard.

There are some fans here who will jeer absolutely anything. And as sure as the sky is blue, the Manchester City midfielder is certain to cop some stick this lunchtime.

Now, I’m going to stick my neck on the line here and say that frankly, Lampard doesn’t deserve the abuse he gets.

Like it or not, Lampard is a legend. A modern-day great of the game, he has scored 255 goals in over 850 appearances. He’s notched four this season already for City and struck 39 during his time at West Ham United.

Be proud of that. It all started right here.

The question is, does Frank Lampard really hate West Ham? I don’t think so. Deep down, the boy from Romford has Claret and Blue blood pumping through his veins.

Why else would he offer Mark Noble his words of wisdom after he missed a penalty against Chelsea back in 2009?

Noble said: “Frank came up to me after and said: ‘Make sure you take the next one and smash it in the back of the net’.

“I will never forget those words.”

Yes, Lampard left for Chelsea. Yes, he was quick to kiss their badge at every possible opportunity. And yes, he’ll probably celebrate emphatically if he or Manchester City score today.

But let’s be plainly honest, West Ham were never going to keep a player like Frank Lampard. He was too good and,

at that time, we were a selling club. Forget all the parting shots, the move made absolute sense.

Like it or not, joining Chelsea was the best career move for him. He went on to collect 106 caps for England and his trophy cabinet speaks for itself – hence the song, ‘Frankie Lampard, he’s won more than you’. The truth is, he has.

Despite proving he can still cut it with the best, a lucrative swansong in New York beckons. Today will surely see Lampard grace the great Boleyn Ground for the final time.

As such, we have a final chance to let bygones be bygones. Reconciliation? Doubtful, although stranger things have happened in football... just look at the table!

So, go ahead, boo Lampard if you must. But take a moment to appreciate him for the classy, quality professional that he is.

If the 36-year-old plays, fitness allowing, admire his impeccably-timed runs and pay attention to his perfect

positioning. And, whatever you do, just

keep your fingers crossed that he doesn’t score!

Seriously, don’t waste your energy booing Lampard. Remember his Academy roots. Or simply get behind our brilliant players instead. On current form, they deserve it.

After all, we have a genuine chance of beating the champions today.

Come on you Irons!

RIP GREAT UNCLE DONLAST week, my family were left saddened by the sudden passing of my Great Uncle Don.

Don was one of life’s one-offs. A real charming man, he had an infectious warmth about him. He spoke fluent Spanish, loved a good glass of Rioja, and he oozed West Ham. The man was Claret and Blue, through and through.

Don was 59 and leaves his beloved wife Marion behind. Will we all truly miss him.

Rest in peace, Don.

FOOTBALL clubs tend to be transient places – players, managers, medical staff, kit men, even visiting journalists, come and go as the years roll by.

At West Ham though, down at the club’s training ground alongside the railway at Chadwell Heath, there has been one constant for almost 35 years, a lovely lady very much in a man’s world.

Her name is Shirley Austin, from Barkingside, and, together with a clutch of chefs through the years, she has been preparing food for West Ham’s players ever since 1980.

I’ve known Shirley for all that time and although the hair may be a touch greyer, the warm smile hasn’t changed at all.

Sitting down with her in the players’ restaurant during a brief respite before the lunchtime rush, Shirley recalls her early days at West Ham – and the day in 2006 when she gave the team-talk to the players before a London derby against Tottenham.

“My mother-in-law, known to everyone then as Mrs Austin, used to help out with the catering in pre-season but the manager John Lyall, was looking for someone to cater for the youth team – and she volunteered me,” recalls Shirley.

“It suited me at the time. My two girls, Dawn and Helen, were growing up so the timing

was good. I still remember the number of meals I had to prepare back then – 26, it was.

“The dinners were pretty basic back then, shepherds pies, meat pies, that sort of thing – certainly no pasta.

“Gradually everything changed, the food became more nutritious – out went the chips on a Friday. Spaghetti Bolognese became popular.

“These days we have a salad bar. There is a choice of meat or fish and a variety of vegetables. Back in the early days I had to order everything - the kit man and I then used to go up to Sainsbury’s and collect it.

“Yes, we’re still in the same building but it has changed out of all recognition. Everything was on a smaller scale then, from the playing squad, the management team, through to the medical set-up.

“Things are much more exact now, more scientific, a whole lot different to when Phil Parkes used to have a tot of whisky before a game!

I’ve seen a few managers come and go in that time and a lot more players. My favourite? Probably the first one – John Lyall. He was easy to speak to, a real family man. Sam is similar in many ways – a good man and someone who puts you at ease.

“Almost all the managers have been good though – I can only

think of one who I wasn’t keen on and I’m not saying who that was – you’ll have to work it out for yourself!

“I still occasionally see the old players when they come down to the training ground – people like Tony Cottee and Bobby Barnes. It’s good to see them again.

“When I started it was an all-British squad but now, of course, they come from all over the world. They all sit down in here and eat the same thing though – I don’t think we’ve even got any vegetarians these days, one of the most recent was probably Ian Pearce.

“This current squad are fine. Kevin Nolan is a very good captain, Mark Noble is another favourite of mine.”

But what of Shirley’s famous team-talk?

“It was before a game against Tottenham.” she remembers, “Just before we played in the FA Cup Final. We had a sweep going amongst the staff where we all tried to predict the scores. I won it one year and the following season Alan Pardew said that, if he beat me, I had to do the pre-match team talk but if I beat him, he would do the washing-up.

“He won so I had to do the talk, had to read out the team for the match against Spurs. I was doing OK until I got to the strikers – “Yossi Benayoun, Bobby Zamora – ‘Terry’ Sheringham.” You can imagine how that went down.

“I had to do a little speech – I just told them to go out, do their best but not get injured just before the Cup Final. It seemed to work because we won the game, although half the Spurs squad had food poisoning!

“I still enjoy my job. I work five days a week, sometimes six and a lot of the fun is still just meeting people.

“Everyone is happier when we’re winning though so at the moment, as you can imagine, the mood couldn’t be better.”

MOOSE MEETSIAN ‘MOOSE’ ABRAHAMS CHATS TO FORMER WEST HAM UNITED, MANCHESTER CITY AND ENGLAND STAR TREVOR SINCLAIR

BEFORE introducing today’s Moose Meets with Trevor Sinclair, I want to touch for moment on something many of us may have forgotten.

Last weekend I went to visit Sylvia Diamond, pictured here on the right with her daughter Rachelle.

Sylvia has been a West Ham United fan all her life and is a Season Ticket Holder, who has been at all of our major games over the past 50 years.

Sadly, illness means she may never again get to come to Upton Park, hear ‘Bubbles’ sung by our amazing fans, or watch a player score a goal wearing the Claret and Blue shirt.

Sylvia told me how she was cheered up by listening to our win here three weeks ago against Queens Park Rangers on the radio.

Speaking to Sylvia made me realise two important things. The first is the power our Football Club has not only to connect with people – people who might come and watch every week, but also those who for whatever reason, be it health, finance, travel restrictions or whatever, cannot be here.

The second is that, compared to our health, getting upset when it does not go your team’s way is inconsequential.

For the record Sylvia is my great aunt, and I hope today West Ham can put another smile on her face.

SPECTACULAR GOALSSO to Moose Meets… and I recently caught up with former West Ham, Manchester City and England midfielder Trevor Sinclair.Where else to start any conversation with Trevor than by talking about spectacular goals?

Of course, he was the man who famously set up Paolo Di Canio for that goal against Wimbleon, while he also scored a brilliant scissor-kick himself against Derby.

So, which was his favourite – the assist or the goal?

“I have got to say the scissor

kick I scored,” he began. “I didn’t mind setting up other people, but on that particular day, we were beating Derby 3-0 and I was playing absolutely, shockingly, poorly and Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was the England manager, was in the stands. The lads were on fire and didn’t really need me but what I did, I did poorly.

“I just thought ‘I need something to put me in the England frame here’ and as the ball came over, I judged the flight of it really well and I thought ‘I’m going to have a go here’. I had a go and it went in and from then on I think I was in every England squad.

“So I was delighted to get the goal, as I think it did change my path and got me in the England squad. It was annoying to know that if I hadn’t scored that goal I might never have got into the England squad.”

Trevor was adamant he was ‘rubbish’ that day, his word not

mine. “Any West Ham fan will tell you, I had some good games but I had some poor games too and that inconstancy was a really bad part of my game. But when I did play well, I did put in a few decent performances.”

And so our conversation drifted on to that crossfield right-to-left 40-yard ball for Paolo to score arguably the best goal in Premier League history.

“It’s football isn’t it? Offensively if you want to do something and create something, more often than not you have to make your moment off the ball and Paolo’s moment was superb. We seemed to have a good understanding on the football field and he made a good run off the player, so I got my head up, got the ball out of my feet and I felt ‘Yes, I can hit that ball’. I never in my wildest dreams thought he was going to finish it first time with a scissor-kick volley, but he did and you have to tip your cap to him, it was a great finish!”

So does Trevor agree with me, that Paolo’s goal against Wimbledon that afternoon was the best ever seen in the Premier League?

“It’s one of them and I think his celebration, he was full of charisma and full of style as Italians are, as he ran off, he kind of told everyone at the time ‘You’re never going to see a better goal’ – and it was a great finish.”

WORLD CUP HEROTREVOR’S time at West Ham was so much more than those two goals, though.

The former Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers man spent five-and-a-half years in Claret and Blue between January 1998 and May 2003, scoring 38 goals in 206 appearances.

During his time at the Boleyn Ground, Sinclair helped West Ham to finish in the top half of the

Premier League table three times, including a record-high of fifth in 1998/99. In summer 1999, he was part of the squad which won the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

As he has already mentioned, Trevor’s form as a West Ham player earned him an England debut against Sweden in November 2001. Seven months later, injuries to Danny Murphy and Owen Hargreaves saw him become an unlikely hero for England at the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals in Japan/South Korea, where he helped the Three Lions reach the quarter-finals.

“I loved it at West Ham,” Trevor confirmed. “I had a great time there and it’s great to see the club doing so well again, and I hope to come back again soon.”

Having been born just over the River Thames in Dulwich, he never found it hard to settle in east London.

“The people welcomed me so much – the players, the management, the fans – that it

made it easy for me to adjust. I always look back and think what a brilliant time of my life that was.”

On his time at City, who he joined following West Ham’s relegation in 2003, Trevor is more modest!

“I was rubbish at City, which was more to do with injuries and I was really gutted. I am really pleased for the fans, though, because they have been in the shadow of Manchester United for so long, so it’s good for them to cheer City winning trophies and being in the Champions League.”

UNITED OR CITY?SO what about the game this afternoon?

After wins against Liverpool and Queens Park Rangers, does Trevor think his old team West Ham can record a third straight home win by getting one over the champions?

“Why not?” asked Trevor, optimistically. “West Ham have a lot of pace going forward and carry a threat, while the centre halves are growing in confidence. West Ham have a good manager and great supporters at home, so why not?”

While West Ham are taking on Manchester City this lunchtime, Trevor will be helping Lancaster City prepare for their Northern Premier League First Division North fixture with Radcliffe Borough.

Now 41, he is serving as assistant to his former QPR team-mate Darren Peacock at the wonderfully-named Giant Axe stadium.

While the eyes of the world might not be on their game today, we of course wish Trevor and the Dolly Blues all the best this afternoon!

It is always great chatting to Trevor. I remember some brilliant performances he put in wearing a West Ham shirt and it was good to meet up with him again.

During the season, I’ll be speaking to other ex-Hammers and some players in the current squad too in Moose Meets…

If you have any suggestions of who you’d like to hear from, you can contact me on Twitter @BroadcastMoose.

Enjoy the game today and don’t forget COYI!

The Development Squad kicked off their European campaign by losing an eight-goal thriller to Bilbao Athletic

DEVELOPMENT SQUADNICK Haycock’s Development Squad narrowly lost 5-3 to Spanish side Bilbao Athletic in their first game of the new Premier League International Cup.

With regular U21 players such as Reece Oxford and Reece Burke unavailable through injury and international duty respectively, Haycock named a young side including scholars Manny Onariase and Josh Pask at centre-back along with U18 forwards Jordan Brown and Djair Parfitt-Williams.

The Hammers did not start well as a defensive mix-up allowed Athletic striker Jorge Luis Garcia to open the scoring after just two minutes.

However, Haycock’s men responded brightly with Parfitt-Williams hitting the post before Matthias Fanimo’s drilled cross was diverted past goalkeeper Remiro by Unai Bilbao Arteta.

The scoreline was not level for long, though, as the visitors went ahead shortly after through Aitor Seguin Cid’s free-kick. The Spaniard’s delivery evaded everyone in the box and nestled into the far corner.

Los Leones extended their lead after left-back Urtzi Iriondo broke into the box and lashed a fierce shot – via a deflection – past Raphael Spiegel to make it 3-1 before half-time.

SECOND HALF RALLYTHE Development Squad rallied in the second half and created a number of chances, yet they had little to show for their efforts until Elliot Lee scored his fourth goal in three games in the 77th minute. The striker, who had worked tirelessly throughout, was rewarded as he pounced on Moses Makasi’s knockdown to finish from close-range.

Lee’s goal put the wind in the Hammers’ sails as they pushed to find an equaliser. However, their hopes of a comeback were dashed in stoppage time after Spiegel handled Sebastian Lletget’s high clearance, and the referee dubiously awarded a free-kick for a deliberate backpass.

From the resulting free-kick, Garcia scored his second of the evening.

The Hammers responded

immediately through substitute midfielder Kieran Bywater as he cut in from the right-wing and curled a wonderful shot into the top left-hand corner to make it 4-3.

As the Hammers committed men forward in search of a last-gasp equaliser, Athletic sealed the victory as they broke down the right wing and Mario Barco’s diving header finally put the result beyond doubt.

LEARNING CURVESPEAKING after the game, Haycock said: “It was a learning curve for them. I thought four of the five goals were easily avoidable and I think we have to defend better as a team.

“I’m disappointed. I said to the boys in the dressing room if you score three goals, that usually wins you a football match. But we needed to score six and it doesn’t happen at this level.

“We don’t want to take anything away from Bilbao Athletic because they are a good side. They’re more experienced than we were, but that’s what the development process is about. It’s about challenging young players at higher levels and seeing if they can cope.”

One of the Development Squad’s standout performers on the night was right-back Kyle Knoyle, who made his third U21 appearance of the season against the Spaniards.

The England U18 international agreed with Haycock that mistakes cost the Hammers dear, saying: “It was a good experience playing against European opposition, but I don’t think we started the game well enough. That then set the tone for the rest

“They were good, a typical Spanish side they were good in possession and more technical than other teams we’ve played against.”

The Development Squad returned to domestic action against Manchester United in the Barclays U21 Premier League at Rush Green Stadium last night. A full report, reaction and highlights can be found on whufc.com and West Ham TV.

West Ham’s next fixture in the Premier League International Cup will see Dutch side PSV Eindhoven visit the Boleyn Ground on the evening of Wednesday 19 November.

DESPITE seeing our unbeaten run ended at Fulham last weekend, I believe we have made a very positive start to the 2014/15 season as an Academy.

We have got a very strong base player-wise, with goalkeeper Sam Howes having played for England U18s and for our own U21 side this season. He’ll be looking to extend his Development Squad experience this season.

At centre-half, we have got Manny Onariase and Josh Pask, who give us a real base to play off. Alex Pike has been outstanding at right-back and is really pushing Kyle Knoyle and Sam Westley for that position in the U21s – there is a real duel going on there which keeps everyone at their best.

Up at the top, Jordan Brown has done exceptionally well for the U18s, holding the ball up, leading the line and scoring in almost every game. Unfortunately, he has picked up an injury that may keep him out for a little while.

It was significant that neither he nor Josh played against Fulham and that took a little bit of the spine away from the team and made the game more even.

We missed a penalty at 0-0 and had a corner cleared off the line, so it could have been a different game if things had gone our way.

All of the players I have just mentioned forced their way into the squad against Bilbao Athletic in the Premier League International Cup.

They show the importance of having a spine down your team who other people can play off.

That group there have done particularly well in the early part of the season.

You can add to them young Vashon Neufville at left-back, who is an U16 but has played in virtually every U18 game this season. He has just been picked for the Victory Shield squad for England U16s.

Joe Powell and Tunji Akinola have also played, so you’re getting U16 players in the U18 team on a regular basis, which they need to do.

They need to come into their scholarships next season with half their apprenticeship already done. They need to be ready for U21 football and, at the age of 19, they want to be looking at the first team and saying to themselves ‘You don’t need to buy anybody because I am there or thereabouts’.

You can add Reece Oxford to that list, who is still 15 but has been selected for the England squad for the European U17 Championship qualifiers, which start today in Cyprus. Another schoolboy, Jahmal Hector-Ingram, was in the squad but unfortunately had to pull out through injury.

We have to look after Jahmal and manage his career. He will now have to rehab properly and hopefully he will be back training soon and U21 football could come calling for him, with Jordan out.

Reece has been superb for us, but we have to monitor him in terms of how many games he plays and that is why we gave him a breather for the Bilbao match. To say we missed a 15-year-old in an U21 match is some plaudit to how well he has done.

We also have the striker

Anthony Scully who we have not talked about at all this season because he has been recovering from a torn thigh muscle. He is also being looked at by the Republic of Ireland and England at age-group level.

We have qualified for the U16 Premier League International Tournament, which is being played this weekend, and we will give a number of U15 schoolboys an opportunity because we believe in fast-tracking our players.

It’s all about stretching players to the limit and putting them in training sessions with the older ones and then, when they make that transition to Chadwell Heath and the first team, they are more equipped to do it.

We want them to be challenged each and every day.

If I look back at all the top players who I worked with during their development, they all played up an age-group – Scott Parker, Paul Konchesky, Matt Upson, Kieron Dyer – before going on to become full internationals.

In terms of football, that is where we are at present.

We had a Technical Board Meeting earlier this week and Sam Allardyce joined us and showed a really strong interest in what we are trying to do at the Academy.

Each player has their own personal development plan tailored to their own physical, mental, educational, positional and other needs. In any elite sport, players need a plan so that they know what they are doing every single day. Football training should not be generic – we want to provide

ACADEMY 2014/15

HAVING scored nearly 20 goals for West Ham United U18s, striker Jordan Brown has made a terrific impact since his move from Arsenal in summer 2013.

Brown bagged 13 times last season as the Hammers finished second in the Barclays U18 Premier League South table and his prolific strike-rate has continued at the start of the present campaign.

Like many players at the Academy of Football, Brown first started playing football at a very young age as he grew up in south west London.

“I first started playing when I was about six,” he began. “I played for a local team near where I lived in Osterley.

“They had a few links to Watford and Chelsea but it was Arsenal that I was eventually scouted for. I went round all three clubs, but Arsenal was the best decision for me at the time.”

Soon after joining the Gunners, Brown moved to a new position and has never looked back.

“I was eight years old when I first joined. I started as a central midfielder but was soon moved up to striker within a few months.”

For most footballers, playing at Arsenal would be the pinnacle of their careers. However, Brown’s ambition is clear as he explains his reasoning behind leaving Arsenal a little over a year ago.

“I thought it was the right time to move. I needed to make a decision about whether or not I was going to get played regularly in the youth teams and eventually make it into their first team. You never know in football, but I thought it wasn’t very likely.

“I was close to joining Norwich, but West Ham did it for me. The history of the club and their reputation for developing young players helped make my mind up.”

Brown’s decision to join the Hammers has paid dividends. The 17-year-old can vividly remember his first impressions of life at Little Heath.

“I came here to look round and see what it was like, really. There’s a good bunch of lads here. There’s a higher tempo to training and it’s more competitive. That really excited me.”

Since then, Brown has continued his development as a talented all-round No9. Describing his strengths, he says: “I would say running in behind the defenders and playing off their shoulders. That’s one of my best attributes. I’m good at running at defenders with pace too.

“I model my game on any good player really, they might not even be in my position. Players like Eden Hazard, he’s a great player. He’s fantastic at

dribbling and running at people. That excites me.

“As a striker I always used to look up three strikers in particular. Ruud van Nistelrooy, because when he was in the box he was clinical, a great poacher. Thierry Henry, I don’t need to explain why. And finally the Brazilian Ronaldo was a great inspiration too.”

While he is one of the standout players at the Academy, Brown also has a maturity beyond his years, knowing he still has work to do if he is to fulfil his dream of playing Barclays Premier League football.

“In the goals aspect it’s easier for me because I’m more experienced. I’ve moulded into the team so hopefully I can continue scoring goals. I want to improve every day.

“I could improve on my heading for sure. I’ve also been working on my hold-up play which I think is improving.”

As befits most regular scorers, Brown has developed a trademark goal celebration, a Ballotelli-esqe folded arms routine. Brown says of the celebration: “I’m not sure really where it came from, playing FIFA I think! It’s just of those things that when I score, I want to act like a boss. Everyone just runs to me. I’m thinking of a new celebration at the moment!”

Given Brown’s current form, his new celebration is sure to be witnessed up and down the county very soon.

Striker Vicky Kinsman is desperate to make a success of her second spell with West Ham United

LADIESWEST Ham United progressed through to the second round of the Capital Women’s Cup with a 5-3 penalty shootout victory away at Tottenham Hotspur Ladies last weekend.

One of their scorers in that match was striker Vicky Kinsman, who re-joined the Hammers in the summer after last wearing the Hammers shirt ten years ago.

The striker, who was among the scorers as Sunday’s tie ended 4-4 after extra-time, picks up the story of her return to the Club.

“I was playing for Barking Ladies last season and we drew West Ham in the final of the Essex County Cup,” said Kinsman. “They beat us 5-1 but I remember looking around the pitch that night thinking that if I worked hard enough, I could get myself into that team.

“I played for West Ham ten years ago so I knew a few of the older faces and, after speaking to them, I said I’d come to pre-season training and see how it goes. It obviously went well!

“I feel that I have settled in fine back at West Ham. The girls are really friendly and full of banter so I felt comfortable from the start.

“I enjoyed pre-season; don’t get me wrong I hate running but as I’d decided to take the step up, I

was hitting the gym a lot. I already felt fit but there are two leagues difference between Barking and West Ham and the football is that much faster so I needed to make sure I was ready.”

ALL OR NOTHINGKINSMAN was one of five new additions made by new manager Julian Dicks during the summer and the 28-year-old admitted that the way the former West Ham defender works shows just how much he loves the Club.

“Julian has been there and done it,” continued Kinsman. “He is a West Ham legend so he automatically gets my respect from the start. You can tell how much West Ham United means to him through the way he

talks to us and treats us. He just wants the very best for the Club.

“The difference with him and other managers that I’ve played for is that they have all been quite laid back when it comes to missing training or not being able to make a game. Julian is all or nothing in that respect.”

Kinsman netted her first goal in a friendly defeat away at C&K Basildon during pre-season, before also scoring in competitive matches against Plymouth Argyle, Keynsham Town and Tottenham.

Looking back, Kinsman revealed that since re-joining the Hammers, the league has taught her a lot about how she has developed as a footballer over the years.

“Scoring my first goal against Basildon was a really good feeling for me. It was a local game so I had my friends, family and little boy all there to support me in their West Ham shirts, so I was glad to get a goal for them!

“It’s definitely a relief to have got a couple more so far this season. I knew that once I’d got the first one, I’d be OK and the pressure would be off a little! This league is a lot quicker than I was used to and you don’t always get a lot of chances in a game, so you need to make the most of the ones you do get!

“I know what Julian expects of me. I’m good at holding the ball up and bringing others into play so as long as I’m doing my job and getting goals as well, I’m happy!

“I think I used to be a pretty lazy player if I’m honest, but in every single game for West Ham this season, I am playing for my shirt.

“I’ve realised that I need to believe in myself more. I am good enough to play at this level and my performances so far this season have proved that!”

Striker Kinsman says manager Julian Dicks expects his players to give their all

TOP-THREE TARGETWITH the Ladies’ season now two months in, the squad are beginning to learn more about what they believe they are capable of this season, with Kinsman looking at the top end of the table as a realistic target.

“Now the season has got underway, I definitely feel we are capable of a top-three finish. There has not been a team that we have played so far that have been better than us, whether we have won or lost, so we need to be more consistent.

“Tottenham away in the league [a 2-0 win] proved that we should not be under-estimated and a performance like that every week would guarantee taking all three points from our games no matter who we play!

“For me personally, I just want to play every week. It’s as simple as that. Whilst I’m doing that and the team are getting results on the pitch, I’m happy! Plenty more goals would be nice too.”

WHERE ARE WE OFF TO?BRITANNIA STADIUM, Stanley Matthews Way, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 4EG

HOW BIG IS IT? 28,383

WHERE DO I SIT?MARSTONS Pedigree (South) Stand

HOW MANY TICKETS HAVE WE GOT?2,900 Standard Tickets

HOW FAR IS IT?174 miles

HOW DO I GET THERE BY CAR?TAKE the northbound M1 or M11/A14 out of London to the Catthorpe Interchange,

where the M6 begins. Follow the M6 for 71 miles to Junction 15, taking the sliproad left to the A500 towards Stoke on Trent/Newcastle-under-Lyme. Go straight over the roundabout and follow the A500 Queensway for 1.7 miles. Take the sliproad left towards Trentham Lakes/Fenton. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the A50. After about 700 metres, take the sliproad left and turn right over the bridge – the Britannia Stadium is in front of you. A number of paid-for car parks are situated in the streets around the ground.

CAN THE TRAIN TAKE THE STRAIN?TRAIN services are quick and regular between London Euston and Stoke-on-Trent, with two direct services every hour taking under an hour-and-a-half to make the journey. Services leave Euston at .00 and .20 past the hour, with much slower – and cheaper – trains leaving at .46 past the hour. From Stoke station, take a taxi. After the game, fast trains leave Stoke at .12 and .50 past the hour. Adult return fares are £65.80.

WHERE TO ENJOY A PRE-MATCH PINT – WITH ‘THE GOOD BEER GUIDE’ EDITOR ROGER PROTZ –THE Glebe, 35

Glebe Street, is just a short walk from the train station and offers Blonde and Slumbering Monk from the local Joule’s brewery as well as excellent pub grub, including Staffordshire cheese platters. The Glebe has beautifully restored stained glass windows and also offers a traditional cider on handpump. The Wheatsheaf, 84 Church Street, is a popular Wetherspoon’s outlet, with the usual Greene King beers but a range of ales chosen by customers, often featuring the local Lymestone Brewery. Food is served from 8am to 11pm. The White Start, 63 Kingsway, is based in the town centre

and is owned by Stoke’s Titanic Brewery and serves its Steerage, Iceberg, White Star, Plum Porter and Captain Smith’s. Captain John Smith went down with the Titanic and came from Stoke. There are four guest beers on tap as well and food is served all day. Don’t miss the Coachmakers Arms, 65 Lichfield Street, Hanley, a superb pottery workers’ Victorian boozer, saved from demolition and serving Draught Bass as well as beers from local micros, usually including a stout. *Roger Protz edits the CAMRA Good Beer Guide: 2015 edition just out, £15.99. WHAT HAPPENED ON OUR PREVIOUS VISIT?WEST Ham United were humbled 3-1 in the Premier League on Saturday 15 March 2014. After taking an early lead through Andy Carroll’s towering header, West Ham were pegged back when Peter Crouch’s acrobatic effort flew in via Peter Odemwingie. Austrian Marko Arnautovic put Stoke in front on 69 minutes before West Ham’s penalty appeals for handball by Marc Muniesa were waved away. Odemwingie made sure of Stoke’s success when he converted Stephen Ireland’s pass.

HOW ARE THEY GETTING ON NOWADAYS?MARK Hughes’ side have made a solid start to the 2014/15 campaign, capped by an outstanding 1-0 victory at Manchester City in late August. Stoke have also defeated Newcastle United and Swansea City at the Britannia Stadium, and host Southampton in the Capital One Cup fourth round on Wednesday evening.

TODAY’S referee will be Martin Atkinson.A referee since the age of 16,

Atkinson was promoted to the Football League list of assistant referees in 1998. In 2000, Atkinson was promoted to the Select Group of assistant referees, allowing him to run the line in Premier League matches.

Atkinson joined the National List of referees for the Football League at the start of the 2003/04 season before taking charge of his first Premier League fixture on 20 April 2005 when Manchester City entertained Birmingham City.

The 44-year-old has refereed a host of high-profile fixtures, including the 2006 FA Community Shield between

Chelsea and Liverpool, the 2011 FA Cup final, the 2013 Championship Play-Off final and the 2014 League Cup final.

Atkinson is refereeing West Ham for the second time this season, having been the man in the middle for our 2-2 Barclays Premier League draw at Hull City on 15 September. He also took charge of Manchester City’s opening-day win at Newcastle United this season.

Last season, he took charge of four Hammers fixtures, including the final-day defeat at Manchester City that saw the hosts crowned champions.

In all, Atkinson has refereed West Ham in 24 Premier League matches and four FA Cup ties.

KEY

A Arena – what is the best ground you have played at?I think the Bird’s Nest Olympic

stadium in Beijing, China where I played in the Italian Supercoppa for Lazio against Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan in 2009. We won 2-1 in front of nearly 70,000 fans.

T Twitter – who is the most interesting person you follow on twitter?

My wife, because she is the most important thing in my life. I actually have two accounts so when I first joined West Ham people didn’t know which one to follow. But now they know and I have received lots of nice messages.

E Eat – if you were cooking to impress, what would you make?I would go with seafood ravioli

with a tomato and cream sauce. I like to cook!

SELECTION OF QUESTIONS RELATING TO THE LETTERS

OF HIS FAMOUS NAME

M Music – who is your favourite artist?I really like rock music,

especially Argentine rock and also more upbeat stuff such as reggaeton.

A Advice – what is the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?

The best piece of advice I’ve been given is to always fight for my aims.

U Unawares – what is the worst practical joke that has ever been played on you?

They put a dead bird in my socks when I was at Velez Sarsfield in Argentina. I can’t say what I did to get them back for it!

R Rule – if you could change a rule in football, what would it be?I would change the rules about

taking a penalty. As it stands you have to run up and take it, but I would allow the players to dummy it or be more creative.

O Origin – you are from Buenos Aires, so can tell us a bit about your home city?

It’s a beautiful city. It’s very big, it’s almost as big as some European countries! I really love it. I also really like London, it’s also very big with lots going on. It’s one of the most important and beautiful cities in the world.

Z Zinger – what is the best goal you have scored in your career?A particularly beautiful and

important goal was when I scored in the 2009 Coppa Italia final victory against Sampdoria for Lazio. We went on to win the cup!

A Anger – what makes you angry? In football, I get angry when I miss a good chance to score.

In life, when people shout for no reason.

R Reality – if you had to go on a reality show TV show, what would it be?

It’s impossible, I would never go on any of those shows, not for all the money in the world. I don’t mind doing selfies and I like twitter but not television shows.
