CAP LEIGHTON AWA

Wes Kirk (Terre Haute, Ind.)Recognizes the tennis teaching professional who contributes to tennis in his or her community beyond his livelihood. This person gives freely in promoting involvement in tennis for players of all levels and ages, and assists in developing tennis programs and promoting participation.

Kirk has been a tennis teaching professional for more than 20 years with Terre Haute Junior Tennis Association (THJTA) and is the face of tennis throughout Wabash County. He is currently coaching the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams at Sullivan High School. Kirk boasts the completion of at least nine indoor after-school programs (six to eight weeks each) in three schools around the Terre Haute area. Through these programs, and many others spearheaded by Kirk, more than 100 children in the Wabash Valley have benefited from programs just this year, not including the free programming offered by the THJTA during the summer. It is also a well-known fact that Kirk goes above and beyond for the juniors of the Terre Haute community. He lives and breathes tennis, and he truly is the face of junior tennis in the Wabash Valley, working hard year-round to provide the best instruction possible and takes it to wherever the kids are located. Kirk is a strong believer in starting children early in the game of tennis. While not every child may be the next superstar, Kirk knows tennis will lay a good foundation for the rest of a child’s life. He is sensitive to the tough financial situations families face, and gives lessons to kids at reduced rates or does not charge them at all. Through this model of teaching and interacting with the future tennis players of the United States, Kirk embodies the spirit of Cap Leighton, who is considered in many ways to be the model teaching professional.

COMMUNITY TENNIS ASSOCIATION OF

THE YEARTerre Haute Junior Tennis

AssociationRecognizes outstanding service

rendered in the community and in the growth and development of the

sport of tennis.

The THJTA was formed in 1986 after funding issues forced the Vigo County School Corporation to end its summer recreation program. Over the past 33 years, the organization has introduced thousands of juniors between the ages of 4-18 throughout Wabash Valley to the lifetime sport of tennis. It has employed an average of 30 people each summer and trained professionals and high school players to teach tennis, direct clinics, tournaments, team tennis and special events. Throughout the summer, the THJTA provides free youth clinics with a morning session for beginners and an afternoon camp for advanced players. They also host a multitude of tournaments, which have attracted local, state, regional, national and international players. Russian professionals, Marat Safin and Anna Kournikova, were among some of the international players to attend these tournaments. The THJTA also works with local schools to provide tennis in physical education classes as well as after-school programs and more. In addition to the summer programs, the THJTA often provides equipment to area middle and high schools to further promote tennis. The organization is a Net Generation provider, which has allowed them to provide needed equipment to elementary school for use by physical education teachers as well as after-school programs. The THJTA offers its tennis programming from in-kind gifts, sponsorships, corporate donations and revenue from tournaments and after-school programs. Many of the THJTA’s participants over the years have continued playing tennis on their respective high school teams, and the organization has also provided summer jobs for these high school players as instructors. The THJTA’s success is measured by its years in existence, partnerships built in the community, a combined 75 years of teaching experience between their professional teaching staff and thousands of students introduced to tennis. Staff at the THJTA are very proud of the association and the partnerships they have built in the Wabash Valley. They hope to continue to provide quality tennis opportunities and great memories for their juniors for many years to come.

A 14-year-old Arthur Ashe even said his only dream was “to be good enough to beat Bob Ryland.” His success continued, and in 1959, he broke through the barriers of race and class to become the first professional African American player. Ryland played his first match as a professional in Cleveland. The Chicago native saw success in both the ATA and integrated amateur tournaments around the country, which made him one of the best-known black players in the United States. Later in life, Ryland began sharing his love of the game through coaching. He worked briefly at the St. Albans Tennis Club in Washington, D.C. where he gave tennis lessons to some of Washington’s elite. He also coached at Midtown Tennis Club in New York City from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s. Ryland also coached Venus and Serena Williams when they were juniors, as well as teaching tennis to several celebrities, including Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand. Ryland was previously inducted into the Wayne State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991, the USTA/Eastern Section Hall of Fame in 2002, the Black Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009 and USPTA/Eastern Division Hall of Fame in 2013.

USTA/MIDWEST TENNIS & EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Founded in 1992 as the charitable arm of the USTA/Midwest Section, the USTA/Midwest Tennis & Education Foundation (formerly Midwest Youth Tennis & Education Foundation) has been supporting communities, programs and individuals to provide greater educational opportunities for you. The three mail pillars of its mission include:

• Providing tennis opportunities to those from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds;

• Supporting programs that focus on creating positive environments for at-risk youth and select adult populations;

• Helping youth reach their highest potential in tennis and education.

More than $100,000 Awarded in 2019

The Foundation awarded $116,150 in grants and scholarships this year which included the following: 14 programs receiving grant funding from across the Midwest; 28 junior player grants for individuals of all ability levels; one recipient of the EntouRaj for Kids grant, three recipients of the Dorothy Kohl Future Star Achievement Award; one Anne Krupp Memorial Scholarship recipient, and six college scholarship recipients. The Foundation also awarded grant funding to the following programs in support of its mission to support adaptive and wheelchair tennis: Buddy Up Tennis in Columbus, Ohio; Special Olympics Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin; and YMCA of Lancaster and Fairfield County in Lancaster, Ohio.

The Foundation is excited to have awarded more than $1,000,000 in grants and scholarships over the years since the initial individual and program grants awarded in 1994. The Foundation is excited to continue to change and transform lives through tennis and education for generations to come.

Kids’ Day and Junior Team Challenges

The Foundation was excited to offer some special opportunities for youth during the summer. First, the Foundation partnered with the Chicago District Tennis Association to offer a Kids’ Day event in July during the Nielsen Men’s Pro Tennis Championship in Winnetka, Ill. Approximately 125 youth along with coaches from five Chicago area National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) Chapters and two programs serving underserved youth participated in several on-court activities which included learning the basics of the game, challenge the pro court, and ball footwork and agility fun. Two former USTA/Midwest junior players, Evan King and Michael Redlicki, conducted an on-court demonstration, players received t-shirts and Net Generation bags, and they were treated to lunch as well as watching the matches.

Second, the Foundation worked closely with the Northeastern Ohio Tennis Association and USTA/Midwest Section to provide a junior team challenge event in June. More than 50 youth along with coaches from one NJTL Chapter and two programs serving underserved youth attended the event held at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The team challenge provided a low-pressure team environment allowing junior participants to develop their skills through level-based play without an emphasis on instruction or results. Players and coaches played on the university tennis courts, were provided with lunch, and received a tour of the university campus.

Anne Krupp Memorial Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship is presented to one or more USTA/Midwest Section tennis players who need additional training or assistance with travel to participate in Adaptive Tennis, Special Olympics or Wheelchair Tennis programs.

Daniel Scrivano (Shelby Township, Mich.) Daniel Scrivano began playing tennis for fun when he was very young and joined tennis camps during the summer in his area, but did not become serious about the sport until he reached high school. After starting his freshman year on the junior varsity team, Scrivano made his way to the varsity team for the next three years where he qualified for three state final tournaments. Today, Scrivano is ranked No. 5 in the world in his disability category, and came in second at the first-ever Adaptive Standing Tournament in the Midwest last year. Though he works full-time, Scrivano is always looking for ways to improve Adaptive Standing Tennis. His ultimate goal is to help make Adaptive Standing Tennis as wide-spread as wheelchair tennis in the United States and internationally. To date, Scrivano is most proud of the impact he has on other children living with a disability and demonstrating that anything is possible. Through his social media and other avenues, Scrivano receives emails and messages from parents telling him how seeing what he has accomplished has helped their child have the courage to try something new.

Robert and Barbara Harris Community Tennis Grant

We are always excited to work with individuals and organizations interested in partnering with us to help achieve ourmission. Through a generous donation received two years ago from one of our Foundation Board members, Neil Harris, we created the Robert P. and Barbara D. Harris Community Tennis grant. This award is provided annually to organizations seeking to start or expand tennis programming (develop instructional programs, organize league/tournament play and more) in their community. The recipients of the second year grant are Chicago District Tennis Association in Chicago, Illinois, and Ashtabula County Tennis in Ashtabula, Ohio.

ADULT INTERSECTIONALS: MEN The annual USTA Keith Donoff Cup, the USTA’s national men’s 55 & Over Intersectional event, took place from November 5 to November 17, 2019. The tournament saw a total of five Sections in action – Florida, Mid-Atlantic, Middle States, Midwest and Southern. The Donoff Cup is composed of the following age divisions: 55s, 60s, 65s and 70s. The five Sections had a team compete in each of those divisions, where they faced off in round robin dual matches. The Midwest teams fought valiantly but fell to very strong teams from Southern, Florida and Mid-Atlantic Sections.

The 2019 USTA Intersectional Team Event moved back to a former site at the Naples Swim and Tennis Club, now the home of the ASC Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy. Played on Har-Tru clay, the contests ended with five of Southern’s six teams winning every division except the 75s, where Southern Cal and Florida ended as Co-Champions in a match halted after singles due to steady rain. The 80s Southern team had to share the Co-Champion title with Texas as their matches also concluded early because of the weather. Fierce competition ensued on the court and sincere friendship pre-vailed off the court. The NSWTA sponsored their annual reception for players on Tuesday for the 55 and older players, while also offering for the first time a gathering for the young seniors ages 35-54 on Sat-urday afternoon. Team bonding and friendship renewals were evident

as many gathered on the patio in front of the tournament desk daily to chat and wait for their matches to be called.

Matt Gleason, Intersectional Tournament Director for the sec-ond time and also Executive Director for USTA Phoenix, orga-nized this event along with Tournament Chairman Rogelio de Haro. On Thursday, players gathered around the pool to enjoy dinner, awards and a live band. Despite losing a large part of Friday to inclement weather conditions, another Intersectional event came to a conclusion in the spirit of great competition and enduring friendships. Next year the event moves back to Phoenix on hard courts and will be played November 9-15, 2020.

SOCIAL TENNIS

TENNIS AMBASSADORS

The Ambassador Program continues to be a success with a total of 28 Ambassadors in 2019. The goal of least one representative per District has been reached this year. Ambassadors are volunteers who are dedicated to promote the sport of tennis in their communities through their social media channels and advertising local tennis tournaments and programs in their area.The program is gaining interest and growing rapidly.

Greg Franzo, Chicago District

“The role of Tennis Ambassador is a natural fit for who I have evolved to be in the tennis community and ‘my’ club, the Oak Brook Tennis Center. I usually captain 4 to 5 teams a season (around 15 a year), and now am captaining adult teams in 4 age divisions (18&O; 40&O; 55&O; 65&O). I’m considered a fixture at the club, scouring the courts for recruits, talking up USTA League with the teaching pros, and often giving a pitch to drill groups and individual members about the excitement of competing in a format that includes the path to a National Championship! And, being the guy who will fill in any group at the last minute. I look forward to the role of Tennis Ambassador to advance the presence of USTA League in the club, and promote the concept with my many tennis buddies at clubs around metro Chicago.”

Katie Finke, Chicago District

“Having moved around a lot, tennis and the USTA has always been a great way for me to make new and long-lasting friends. Tennis is truly a lifelong sport that I have been playing since I was 10 years old. I have been a part of the USTA across four states (GA, AL, NC and IL). Tennis allows me to socialize, be competitive, stay fit and most of all have FUN all at the same time!! I LOVE that the game of tennis is one that I can also share with my husband and 4 kids. Honored to be a Tennis Ambassador and share my love of the sport and USTA with others!”
