Is mastery of content knowledge enough to make a teacher effective in transfering to children what they need to learn to be successful in school and life.
State has established Social Emotional Learning Standards
Standards make it clear we need to know more about the emotional intelligence and empathy of teachers, to determine if they will be able to make these standards part of the school curriculum
We asked teachers the question “What is the relationship between Emotional Intelligence, teacher empathy and self-efficacy?
Regular and special education teachers were asked to complete a survey determining the extent emotional intelligence and empathy influences the way they teach.
It was found that emotional intelligence is related to effective teaching, and that the teaching experience of the teacher plays a prominent role in the teachers ability to use emotional intelligence to make learning more efficient and effective for their students
Role of emotional intelligence
Teachers need to demonstrate empathy and emotional intelligence when teaching
Teachers effective when they understand the relationship between EI, learning and behavior.
Relationship between decision making and feelings.
Decisions associated with emotional quality of decision or judgment
Attributions associated with emotional intelligence because of
four dimensions

Understanding Emotions
Managing Emotions
Possession of High Emotional Intelligence
Teachers will be able to; 1. manage their emotions 2. possess skills to be more empathetic 3.exhibit self awareness 4.use the emotional content of lesson and instruments to motivate students to learn
Empathy important in learning
Teacher empathy allows teachers to : 1) understand the students they teach 2) create a secure & trusting environment 3) take the perspective of their students 4. choice of teaching method influenced by teacher self-efficacy
Summary of Literature Review
Generally, the research indicates that people with high self-efficacy are more persistent and strategic in their performance of a task than those with low self-efficacy
Understanding students provides teachers with the ability to create strategies that make students less angry and resistant.
Method
Sample 24 Special and regular educators in Chicago area
Demographics: 1-3 years experience 37.5%; 4-5 years experience 16.7%; & 6+years 45.9%
Instrument : Teacher Emotional Intelligence, Empathic and Self-Efficacy Survey
Scale includes descriptions of behaviors associated with self-efficacy, empathy and emotional intelligence
Self-efficacy is one’s belief in how well they will accomplish a task or series of task (Bandera, 1997).
Self-efficacy is defined as a person’s “judgment of their capabilities to organize and execute courses of action required to attain designated types of performance” (Bandura,1986, p.391).
That is to say that self- efficacy represents a person’s explicit judgment regarding their ability to attain a specific goal.

Emotional Intelligence
Grewal and Salovey (2005) note that “emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor one’s own and others feelings, to discriminate among them. And to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions” (p.333).

We found that
Teacher experience affects Emotional Intelligence
Teachers with 1-3 years experience often demonstrate lower emotional intelligence than teachers with more years experience.
We also found that
This research makes it clear that awareness of emotional intelligence affects a teacher’s classroom behavior.
High teacher emotional intelligence correlates with student empathy
It is clear that teachers should control the learning environment
Teacher empathy and self-efficacy can influence the learning environment e.g., hostile< nurturing environment
