Jerusalem, take off your robe of mourning and misery;

put on the splendor of glory from God forever...

Baruch 5:1

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I can hardly believe how fast the year goes. Here we are in the middle of Advent already! As you know, Advent is the new year of the Church: our liturgical year runs from the first Sunday of Advent through the week of Christ the King of the Universe. So here we are on the precipice of a new year, expectant with whatever awaits us in the year ahead.

Before we embark on something new, it always pays to look back on the old. What has the past year been like for us, spiritually speaking? Has this year found us growing in our relationship with the Lord? Have we been enriched by taking opportunities to live the Gospel: reaching out to the poor, being God’s presence in our community, witnessing to the Truth in every situation we can? Have we been profitable in our repentance from sin, and have we found reconciliation with God a joyful experience of his mercy and love?

If these experiences haven’t marked our year, it would be well to note where we have fallen short: What have we done that we wish we didn’t do? What have we failed to do? Where have our thoughts and words been uncharitable and our deeds unpraiseworthy?

I think for most of us, the year has probably been both good and bad. There were probably some highlights in the year for us spiritually, and there has probably also been a little darkness. This Advent “new year” gives us the opportunity to celebrate the good and repent of the bad, opening ourselves to the possibility of change and progress in the spiritual life.

So how do we do that? Here are some strong suggestions:

Go to confession. There is nothing like the Sacrament of Penance to jump-start a year of spiritual growth. Taking an honest stock of our lives, leaving the bad at the feet of Jesus, and opening ourselves up to God’s mercy will absolutely always give us the grace to grow into holy people. Always. Whenever we are absent from the Sacrament of Penance we forsake the experience of God’s mercy and forgiveness, which is poured out on us most perfectly in this beautiful sacrament. If you haven’t been to confession in years, this is your opportunity to start fresh. Know that you won’t be judged, know that we priests are humbled and overjoyed when you return, know that we just want you to know God’s love.

Try one new spiritual practice this Advent. Maybe that means going to daily Mass once or twice a week, or spending five minutes at work praying from a devotional book, or even just reading a few verses of Scripture before bed. One little change can yield a whole year of grace.

Make an effort to live differently. Dump a bad habit, star t a new good habit, make a lifestyle change that lets God in just a bit more. For you that might mean dropping a quarter in a jar whenever you use language that is less than edifying, or making an effort to get to Mass on time if you’re habitually running late, or stepping away from the computer or TV for ten minutes so that you have some time to pray, or ending a relationship that leads you into sin. There are many ways to repent, and we all have some need to do that, maybe big, maybe small, but always important. Every little change lets God embrace us in new ways.

God longs to bring us to new life and draw us to eternal happiness one day. How we live and pray and work all has a bearing on whether or not we’re open to his grace. May this Advent find us all actively waiting for the Lord’s return and the fulfillment of his promises. May that active waiting open a world of new growth in the spiritual life for every person in this parish!

The Word from Fr.

Our Family in Faith

Volunteer Opportunities St Mary Immaculate Parishioners are invited to witness their faith in a variety of ways in the parish and community. Listed below are current opportunities to make a difference through volunteering. Please prayerfully consider how you can share in the ministry of our parish.

Art & Environment Needs Help Art and Environment is looking for volunteers with an artistic eye and a love for the liturgy to help set-up the church leading up Christmas. If you’re available during the days leading up to Christmas, we’d love to have your assistance! Contact Rosemary Tack at [email protected] for more information.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word Needs Leaders Children from Pre-School through 2nd grade, who haven’t made their First Holy Communion, are welcome to participate in Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the 9:00 AM Sunday English Mass, the 9:00 AM Polish Mass, and the 12:15 PM Spanish Mass. Volunteers are needed to help share the Gospel message with these young children. Training and materials are provided. Protecting God’s Children and a background check are required. Contact Laura Van Ham at [email protected] or 815-436-2651, x887.

Eucharistic Adoration Needs Adorers Adorers are greatly needed for the overnight hours in our Adoration Chapel. If you are a night owl, consider spending some of that time visiting with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. There are daytime and evening hours open as well. To sign up for a Holy Hour call 815-603-2350 or email [email protected].

Temple Tenders New Members Welcome Every Monday morning, following the 7:30 AM Mass, a group of dedicated parishioners clean the church, wash the windows, vacuum the carpets, clean the sanctuary and check the pews. New volunteers are always welcome. Please contact John West at [email protected] or 815-436-2651, x810 for more information.

Youth Ministry Needs Adult Chaperones Our youth ministry program is inviting adults to help with planning and chaperoning various events. A desire to be a positive influence in the lives of high school teens is critical. Commitments can be for specific events or for more extended programs. Protecting God’s Children and a background check are required. Contact Dianne Rostollan at [email protected] or 815-436-2651, x814.

Could You Spend a Few Minutes Helping After Weekend Mass? On occasion, we have sign-ups for parish-wide events in the Narthex or Commons after our weekend Masses. We would like to establish a team of volunteers to call upon, on rotation, to help fellow parishioners register for specific events. It would only require spending a few minutes more at the parish after Mass. Contact Laura Van Ham at [email protected] or 815-436-2651, x887.

Celebrating the Cultural Diversity of St. Mary Immaculate during Advent

Join us as we learn about the seasonal traditions of several of the cultural communities of our parish. The Filipino, Hispanic, Polish, and Slovenian communities have decorated trees to display their heritage and help us learn about the many rich traditions that are practiced. We will explore

the symbolism of Christmas decorations, special foods or meals that are shared, and unique practices of their cultures.

Tree Viewing in the Commons December 2—31

In addition, a Jesse Tree will be displayed by the Formation Team of SMI

This Advent family tradition helps us count down the days to Christmas as we learn about the family tree of Jesus. Each week find the symbol and daily readings, which will help us make connections between the Old and New Testaments to

see God’s perfect plan to bring mankind back to Himself through Jesus. Displayed by the Religious Ed. Office.

Women of St. Mary's! Have you ever wanted to study scripture and learn how it can speak to you today? Come join us for Walking with Purpose, a b i b l e s t u d y p r o g r a m d e s i g n e d f o r women. Experience the gift of coming together to

study scripture and share your faith journey! This is a great opportunity to grow closer to Christ with personal study and small group discussions that link our everyday challenges and struggles with solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Roman Catholic Church.

Our next session is entitled Beholding his Glory. We will be looking at Old Testament people and events, we’ll encounter problems that only Christ will solve, needs that only he will satisfy, and promises that only He can deliver. This nine-lesson study shows us how all Scripture points us to our Redeemer, Jesus Christ. We’ll learn to recognize and appreciate God’s plan for our own lives, His awe-inspiring majesty, and His desire for personal intimacy with each one of us.

Our tentative calendar starts on January 15th and ends in March. This is a short 9 lesson study, perfect for those who have never attended a bible study before. We will be offering a Tuesday morning session from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and a Tuesday evening session from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A calendar with exact meeting dates will be passed out at first class.

There is a $20 fee for this study that covers your book expense*. Please fill out the registration form and turn it into the reception desk or office.

Daybreak Meal What is Daybreak? Daybreak is a homeless shelter run by Catholic Charities located in downtown Joliet. The evening meals for the residents are provided solely by contributions prepared and served from the congregations of local churches and community organizations. This ministry at St. Mary’s has committed to supplying the dinner six times per year along with the provisions for breakfast the following day. We Need You! Since this is meant to be a parish ministry, we ask that you please consider donating a portion of the meal. Please sign up to donate to the hungry. Holiday Drop-Off Due to the holiday, please have all donations brought to the commons area on Sunday December 30th before noon. There will be no pickup of donations after this date and time. Being that this dinner is on New Year’s Day, please remember to mark your calendar of the date and drop-off time. January 1, 2019 meal Our next meal is Tuesday, January 1, 2019. We need donations of dinner rolls, butter, fresh fruit, desserts, and 2 liter bottles of soda. A complete list of the necessary items will be included on the poster that will be displayed in the commons beginning Friday, December 14th until Sunday, December 30th. Thank you! We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who has cooked, donated or served food. The generosity of the parishioners of St. Mary’s is always overwhelming and we are grateful. Questions? Feel free to contact Cindy Mayfield 815-370-8304, Donna Giancarlo 815-436-7166 or Linda Polnik 815-436-5069.

Volunteers from the Ecology Club and Student Council participated in the school’s project: Adopt a Street. Several bags of trash were removed along their stretch of Getson Street and adjacent parkways. This cleanup is done four times a year. Chaperoned by Ms. Jeannine Schonta and Mrs. Renee Streicher.

The students found that the project was equal parts work and fun. They truly enjoyed helping to keep their community clean and green.

ROSARY FOR LIFE

The Rosary for Life will be prayed on Wednesday, December 19th at 6:15 PM in the Church. There will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Benediction. Please come and pray with us, so that the tragedy of abortion can be eliminated. God gives each baby a soul at conception and that child has a purpose given to him or her by God.

Immediately following the service, you are welcome to join us for our monthly Reverence for Life Ministry meeting in North Wing Rooms B & C, across from the Adoration Chapel. Please contact Don Hrdlicka at 630-415-6603 with any questions about the Rosary for Life.
