POWIDZ AIR BASE, POLAND Air-men assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron kicked off Aviation Rotation (AvRot) 19-3 with C-130J Super Hercules operations over Powidz Air Base, Poland, July 10.

e rotation supports ongoing bilateral training between the U.S. Air Force and its Polish counterpart to maintain joint readiness and fur-ther partnerships. Airmen have sup-ported this rotation since 2012.

“ is rotation will consist of fl ight training along with operations and maintenance integration,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Leland Quinter, 37th AS AvRot 19-3 mission com-mander. “ e benefi t of the entire exercise is that we get to see how we operate together and improve on that.”

Base drop zone as well as combat offl oad maneuvers.

“One of our goals is to help the Polish air force add some of our combat offl oad procedures to their arsenal,” said Quinter. “We’ll start by showing them our process, then incorporate them into the procedure before fi nally having them do it on their own.”

roughout the next two weeks, 37th AS operations will include per-sonnel drops, cargo drops, an inter-fl y exercise, and other operations.

“Our presence here in Europe and our participation in multina-tional exercises enhances our pro-fessional relationships with our allies,” said Quinter. “It also allows us to improve our coordination with partner militaries during times of crisis.”

Air Force stands up Air Force Medical Readiness Agency

by Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs

FALLS CHURCH, VA. In a ceremo-ny Friday, June 28, at the Defense Health Headquarters in Falls Church, Virginia, the Air Force Medical Service stood up a new field operat-ing agency, the Air Force Medical Readiness Agency.

Lt. Gen. Dorothy Hogg, Air Force Surgeon General, and Brig. Gen. Mark Koeniger, incoming AFMRA commander, spoke at the ceremony, heralding a new era in Air Force Medicine.

“We are in exciting and histor-ic times as we engage in multiple lines of effort to transform our orga-nization to support a more ready Air Force,” said Hogg. “Activating AFMRA streamlines our organiza-tion from a dual-focus on health

benefit delivery and readiness, to one laser focused on readiness.”

AFMRA increases the Air Force focus on operational medical read-iness and supports the Air Force Secretary’s goal of a more ready fighting force. e organization will oversee medical readiness programs, expeditionary medical capabilities, and readiness-related Air Force mis-sion support requirements. It will also assist the Surgeon General in developing the policies to support Air Force major commands and base-level unit missions.

Standing up AFMRA fulfills a requirement from the fiscal year 2017 National Defense Authorization Act to establish a readiness-focused orga-nization. e previous two FOAs in the AFMS, the Air Force Medical Operations Agency and the Air Force

Medical Support Agency, were stood down at the same ceremony.

“AFMRA lets us be more respon-sive to emerging readiness require-ments,” said Koeniger. “AFMRA improves our support to the readiness mission at military treatment facili-ties and Air Force major commands, while also helping the Defense Health Agency take on management of the health care benefit at MTFs.”

Koeniger is coming to AFMRA after commanding the 711th Human Performance Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

To ensure continued support to MTFs, AFMRA will temporarily retain many capabilities focused on managing health benefit delivery at MTFs. ese capabilities will move the DHA in future years.

At stand up, AFMRA headquar-

ters is in Falls Church, Virginia, at the Defense Health Headquarters. Other AFMRA components are split between Falls Church and the former AFMOA offices in San Antonio, Texas. Future locations for the orga-nization are still being determined. AFMRA is expected to reach full operating capability in 2020.

“We activate AFMRA with our eyes on the future,” said Hogg. “We will continue to provide world class readiness support, and modernize our capabilities to meet the demands of the Air Force we need.”

AFMRA is part of sweeping reform in the AFMS and the over-all Military Health System. e next phase of reform is the administra-tive transition of service MTFs to Defense Health Agency responsibil-ity Oct. 1.

Retired Airman earns Airlifter of the Week for outstanding customer service

Story and photo by Airman First Class Noah D. Coger86th Airflift Wing Public Affairs

A Kaiserslautern Military Com-munity housing office receptionist received the honor of being named Airlifter of the Week, July 10.

U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing com-mander, coined Alinka Perkins in front of a room full of customers.

“Every Airman and family comes through the Housing Office at some point,” said August. “On behalf of

the 66,000 Americans here in the KMC, thank you for your great cus-tomer service.”

Perkins signed in, directed, and assisted the queries of 1,500 cus-tomers during the month of May. In the peak permanent change of station season, she worked with and transmitted over 200 financial doc-uments each week to both U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army finance offices to ensure PCS entitlements were processed as quickly as possible.

“She runs the entire reception area for the housing office,” said Heather

L. Lewis, Housing Management Assistance Chief. “She’s the first face that people see in the housing office. She has over 100 customers a day during the summer and handles each one with excellent customer service and always does her job with a smile on her face.”

As a retired technical sergeant and former noncommissioned offi-cer in charge of force management, Perkins is very familiar with the tri-als and processes that Airmen face when coming to a new base.

“I just like to help people.

Everyone comes in here and I can say ‘hey, I’ve been through this, I can help you out and make this process as smooth as possible,’” said Perkins.

Through her profound subject knowledge, courtesy, and profes-sionalism, she epitomizes what the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron and Ramstein Air Base represent.

The Airlifter of the Week pro-gram recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through their hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the “World’s Best Wing.”

U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August coins Alinka Perkins, KMC housing office receptionist, Vogelweh Military Complex, July 10. Perkins was recoginzed for her ourtstanding customer service.

Air Force Medical Service unveils new model for active duty careStory and graphic by Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — In an effort to return more Airmen to duty more quickly, the Air Force is rolling out a new medical model to bolster overall readiness levels.

Under the new Air Force Medical Reform model, dedicated provid-er care teams will be aligned to an Operational Medical Readiness Squadron primarily focused on pro-actively treating active duty Airmen and improving their availability to support the warfighting mission. Care for non-active duty patients, primar-ily the families of service members and military retirees, will be handled by separate provider teams aligned to a Health Care Operations Squadron.

“is new structure optimizes both functions and allows us to return Airmen back to full mission capa-bility as quickly as possible without reducing care to our beneficiaries,” said Lt. Col. Robert Corby, chief of Medical Manpower and Personnel, Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. “Restructuring where care is delivered lets our providers focus on each group to improve the quality of care, create efficiencies, and most importantly, get injured or ill Airmen back into the fight more quickly.”

e model is based on a pilot

the 366th Medical Group, Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, began in summer 2018. e group reorga-nized into two squadrons with the goal of returning Airmen to duty as quickly as possible.

e pilot initially launched as part of a wing-wide initiative for the 366th Fighter Wing. Since the initial rollout, the base has seen promising results.

“We had more than 400 Airmen on the base who were considered “non-mission capable” when we launched in March 2018,” said Col. Steven Ward, the former 366th Wing Surgeon General. “In six months, we reduced that number by nearly one-

fourth. Our provider teams focused relentlessly on getting Airmen back into the fight.”

Provider teams were able to holis-tically treat Airmen instead of wait-ing for an Airman to seek out care. ey visited with Airmen in their duty locations to understand the per-sonal and workplace challenges they faced, and partnered with unit leaders to proactively manage Airmen’s care and minimize downtime.

“It was a real culture change for our provider teams, focusing just on Airmen and building relationships with their assigned squadron and leadership,” said Ward. “at narrow focus really helps providers get to

know their patients and solve health problems before they can negatively affect the mission.”

e renewed focus on readiness and returning Airmen to duty goes hand-in-hand with other reform efforts within the Air Force Medical Service and the Military Health System. Corby emphasized coop-eration with the Defense Health Agency, as they assume a larger role at Military Treatment Facilities.

“As we become a more integrated enterprise, it’s very important for us to learn from each other,” said Corby. “e current version of Air Force Medical Reform isn’t final. It will continue to evolve as we roll it out to other locations, and get a bet-ter understanding of each active duty population’s specific needs.”

e AFMS plans to initially roll-out the new medical organization model to 43 Air Force MTFs with-in the continental United States. Medical centers, hospitals, ambulato-ry surgical centers, graduate medical education facilities, overseas MTFs, and limited scope facilities will not initially move to the new organiza-tional model.

The next phase of Medical Health System reforms will admin-istratively transition the MTFs of all military services to DHA responsibility Oct. 1.

In an effort to return more Airmen to duty more quickly, this summer the Air Force is rolling out a new medi-cal model to help improve the overall readiness.

Don’t let ticks ruin your adventure

Army garrisons in Europe migrating to new mass warning systemby U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Public Affairs Office

U.S. Army installations across Europe will migrate to a new emer-gency messaging system this summer.

Alert! Mass Warning Notification System, or MWNS, will replace the current AtHoc system.

e Army's MWNS notifies ser-vice members, Army civilians and their families during a crisis. MWNS operators, for example, can issue alerts in the event of an active shooter, inclement weather or any other event requiring immediate notification.

“In the event of an area-wide inci-dent, we will use Alert! to inform the community about safe havens, fam-ily assistance centers, shelter loca-tions and numerous other things,” said U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Emergency Management Specialist Jeremy Watson. “Alert! allows us to get information out to the community in a timely manner – information you may need to help you survive.”

e migration will affect all U.S. Army personnel stationed at or on assignment in Europe.

Installation Management Command-Europe — the agency overseeing Army garrisons in Europe

— joins the Army-wide effort to migrate to the new mass warning system. e Army published an order Dec. 13, 2018, directing the migration.

e Army currently has two sys-tems deployed across 100 installations. e migration to a single MWNS reduces costs and redundant invest-ments. Migration across the Army will be complete no later than Feb. 29, 2020, according to EXORD 033-19.

Army garrisons in Europe will migrate July 22 to August 2, accord-ing to the following timeline:

July 22 to 26• USAG Ansbach

• USAG Rheinland Pfalz• USAG Stuttgart• USAG Wiesbaden

July 29 to August 2• USAG Bavaria• USAG Benelux• USAG Italy• U.S. Army Europe

e Alert! MWNS provides simi-lar service to the AtHoc system, capable of sending emergency notifi-cations to worldwide users via desk-top pop-up, mobile phone, SMS text, email and public distribution. ere will be no difference between AtHoc

and Alert! with the exception of the way messages look and sound, Watson said.

Alert!, however, is a government off-the-shelf system, meaning it was created and owned by the U.S. federal government. So unlike AtHoc, Alert! doesn't have license fees and is cheap-er to operate. It also means that your Alert! account will follow your Army career — both as a civilian and service member overseas and in the U.S.

Additionally, Alert! allows regis-tered users to add up to 10 different phone numbers to include more fam-ily members and dependents.

Current AtHoc user accounts will automatically be migrated to the Alert! system, so there's no need to register. However, once the migra-tion is complete at the end of July, users should update their profiles by clicking on the blue globe from their workstations, Watson said.

Personnel not covered by the AtHoc system will be afforded the opportunity to register for the Alert! after the migration is complete.

For information about how to register for Alert!, visit the garrison website at https://home.army.mil/rheinland-pfalz

The wilderness of forests in Germany and other European coun-tries call adventurous service members and their families to explore the great outdoors.

Unfortunately, some small but dan-gerous villains threaten to put a damper on those adventures.

e villains are named Ixodes Ricinus and Dermacentor Reticulatus. ey are more commonly known as ticks.

Ixodes Ricinus, the Castor Bean tick, and Dermacentor Reticulatus, the Ornate Cow tick, are both in the same family as deer ticks, which are commonly found in the United States.

While ticks do attempt to threaten the glorious summer weather, they can be defeated through proper prior planning.

“Ticks prefer the edges of areas, so where there is a change from grass to path or meadow to road, that is where you will find more ticks,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Amber Dorsey, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron pest manage-

ment craftsman. “Simple physical mea-sures like avoiding the edges of paths, staying out of tall grass, wearing long pants tucked into your boots, and using a blanket on the grass can protect you.”

Ticks, like vampires, have an olfac-tory weakness too. Sadly, it’s not garlic. It’s Diethyltoluamide, more commonly known as DEET. U.S. Army Maj. Amanda Cline, U.S. Army Public Health Command Europe e n t om o l o g i c a l science program chief, recom-mends using an insect repellent which contains 20 percent DEET to keep ticks off your skin.

If attached, ticks will take the opportunity to suck blood from the host for up to three days.

In addition to taking your blood, they’ll also leave you with a present - their saliva, which can contain bacteria causing Lyme disease.

Lyme disease traditionally presents with a rash at the infection site which

appears to be a classic red “bull’s-eye.” Forty-five percent of people infected with Lyme disease never develop the characteristic bull’s-eye rash, Cline said.

Symptoms of Lyme disease are fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and swollen lymph

nodes.Ticks infected with Lyme disease must

attach themselves to a host and addi-tionally feed for at least 24 hours, Cline said.

“Ticks will hang out on tall

grass swaying in the breeze, holding on with

their back legs while waving their front legs, which are equipped with carbon dioxide-sensing organs, until they sense a warm breathing ani-mal come by,” Dorsey said. “en they grab onto you and crawl upwards until they find a spot they feel is protected: underarms, waistbands, and the tops of socks are common places. en they

bite down and will stay latched onto you for a couple days before dropping off to breed. So if you immediately check yourself and pets after a walk you should be able to remove ticks before you are even bitten.”

If you find one of these draconian arachnids attached to you, Cline said to ignore all the old wives tales regarding tick removal. Instead, she instructs to use a sterile pair of tweezers and grip the tick as close to the skin as possible. en, with a gentle but strong motion, pull upwards and away from the skin to remove the tick. Occasionally the jaws of the tick may remain in the skin. In that case, simply set the dead tick aside and use the tweezers to remove the jaws.

After removal, apply anti-bacterial ointment or rubbing alcohol to the affected area. en place the tick in a sealed container and bring it to the nearest medical treatment facility or veterinary clinic for testing.

21 TSC inducts 7 into Sergeant Morales ClubStory and photos by Capt. Doug Magill 21st Theater Sustainment Command

U.S. Army Europe’s two-star sus-tainment command inducted two of its Soldiers into a leadership develop-ment organization, and inducted five more as honorary members – includ-ing the command’s senior enlisted advisor — July 10, during a ceremo-ny at the Kleber Kaserne eater, in Kaiserslautern.

e 21st eater Sustainment Command inducted Sergeant 1st Class Natasha Carroll, 16th Sustainment Brigade, and Sergeant 1st Class Joseph Stephens, 30th Medical Brigade, into the Sergeant Morales Club, an organization that recognizes enlisted Soldiers who demonstrate integrity, professionalism and leadership.

e command then inducted Sergeant 1st Class Cherrice Rolax, 30th Medical Brigade; Sergeant 1st Class Justin Engle, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command; Master Sgt. Natali Christenson, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center – Europe; Command Sgt. Maj. Gary E. Plotnick, 10th AAMDC; and Command Sgt. Maj. Rocky L. Carr, 21st TSC, as honorary mem-bers. Soldiers inducted as honorary members of the Sergeant Morales Club, have already been inducted into the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club, a similar organization.

“is is recognizing noncommis-sioned officers that model the behav-ior of how we want to shape the future force,” Carr said.

Carroll and Stephens said they felt being inducted into in the organiza-tion was acknowledgement that they were doing the right things as leaders, in mentoring the next generation of Army leaders.

“at’s why I joined the Army, to make an impact on Soldiers,” said Carroll, a cargo specialist for 1st Inland Cargo Transfer Company who describes herself as a native of Atlanta by way of Philadelphia. “To hear your Soldiers speak on your behalf, it mat-ters. is is a big way to say ‘thank you’ as we’re grooming the next generation of leaders.”

Stephens, a preventative medicine specialist for 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion from Augusta,

Georgia, considered the induction to be a milestone achievement in a career field that has always been his passion. He values the message that the induc-tion sends to junior Soldiers.

“As a younger Soldier progresses as a leader, I advise them to ensure that they’re taking care of every Soldier that works for them, developing and increasing their knowledge, skills and abilities,” he said. “Take care of your Soldiers with the same compassion as you would your family.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Baller, 30th Medical Brigade senior enlisted advisor, inducted Carr into the program as an honorary inductee.

“To publicly recognize a leader that sacrifices on a daily basis and recog-nize him in a public forum on behalf

of our community is an honor,” Baller said. “When he first came here, he recognized that leadership emphasis was needed on the Sergeant Morales Club and he has been the driving force behind where the program is today.”

e membership process begins when a first-line supervisor nomi-nates a Soldier. e nomination then goes to the unit’s first sergeant and then the battalion command sergeant major for their respective endorse-ments. e Soldier then goes through battalion- and brigade-level boards before a final selection board at the 21st TSC. e process also includes an Army Physical Fitness Test, written essays and hands-on tasks such as the disassembly, reassembly and functions check of individual weapon systems.

(From left to right) Sergeant 1st Class Natasha Carroll, 16th Sustainment Brigade; Sergeant 1st Class Joseph Stephens, 30th Medical Brigade; Sergeant 1st Class Cherrice Rolax, 30th Medical Brigade; Command Sgt. City Wall Fest

Kaiserslautern AmericanPage 14 July 19, 2019

e historical wine-growing city of Freinsheim will celebrate its annual “Stadtmauerfest,” or town wall fest today through Monday.

A medieval curtain wall and Baroque buildings set the stage for this traditional wine fest. Food and wine booths will stretch for more than a kilometer along both sides of the historical town wall. Local vintners, restaurant own-ers and associations will serve Palatinate culinary specialties and regional wines.

Before the formal opening at 7 p.m., the vendors will march in through the town’s Iron Gate at 6 p.m., accompanied by a marching band and wine prin-cesses from Freinsheim.

e fest opens with Udo Pfaesterer, a band that plays music from sixties until pres-ent, at 6 p.m. at Altstadtterrasse.

Glanzblick & Friends will per-form acoustic pop at winery Weinreich at Hauptstrasse at 7 p.m., and Trudy van Fredward will begin at 7 p.m. in the Kirchner winery. Starting at 8 p.m., Basement Day will entertain visitors with rock-pop at the MC Brothers of Freedom pub.

 e Stadtmauerfest will

begin at noon Saturday and Sunday. Monday it opens at 4 p.m. and continues until mid-night.

roughout the fest days, numerous bands and artists will present various music styles in diff erent locations. Performers include GOODTimes and the duo band Fame with evergreens and country music, the rock

and pop band Robin Sun, e Flames with acoustic pop and 2 of Us with classic rock music.

Sunday, stores will be open for shopping from 1 to 6 p.m.

e old part of town will be closed to motorized traffi c. Visitors can park at the edge of town and walk a few steps to get to the festivities.

Freinsheim’s historical town hall was built in the 15th cen-tury. After the town came under the domination of the elec-toral palatinate in 1471, new authorities established the cur-rent walls. With the Iron Gate, construction of the fortifi ca-tion came to an end in 1514. Until the beginning of the 19th century only two gates were leading out of town. Besides the two town gates, the Iron Gate in the east and the Hain Gate in the southwest, about 20 towers were put up within the wall. Today, fi ve towers are left. Freinsheim is known as one of the nicest and most complete town fortifi cation facilities in the Pfalz. For visitors it’s worth a tour around the town wall, which takes about one hour.

To get to Freinsheim, travel on A6 direction Mannheim; take the Gruenstadt exit; follow the signs to Kirchheim, Dackenheim and Freinsheim. For more information on

Freinsheim and the town wall fest, visit www.stadt-freinsheim.de.

Immerse yourself in the world of the

royals at the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and Windsor Castle. Visit the British Museum, the National Gallery, Victoria and Albert’s, or Madame Tussauds. Snap that perfect panorama picture of Big Ben from the top of the London Eye. Visit the original Hard Rock Café and get a picture crossing Ab-bey Road, or get in some shopping on Oxford Street or Harrods. With a free e-travelguide downloaded from Army Libraries, you won’t have to worry about not finding something to do. You will even stay in London late enough to spend an evening at the theater, or enjoy dinner in a high class restaurant or specialized gastro-pub.

Paris ExpressAug. 10 to 11Cost: Adults: $99, Children under 12: $69

Enjoy the view from the top of the Ei-ffel Tower or Tour Montparnasse (the only place in Paris where you can’t see the ugli-est building in Paris), ride the RER to Ver-sailles, take the “secret” back entrance into the Lourve and skip the line to see the Mona Lisa. With no tour guide to follow or pre-planned sight-seeing schedule to adhere to, you are free to explore the “most romantic city in the world” however you wish.

If you asked 50 different people to de-scribe the best way to spend a day in Paris, you would get 50 different answers. Don’t settle for someone else’s pre-packaged day in Paris seeing what they want you to see. When you download a free e-travelguide for your phone or tablet from Army Librar-ies you can make your trip to Paris your own.

Bavarian Fairytale CastlesAug. 24Cost: Adults: $99, Children under 12: $79

After visiting both castles, you will still have time for a leisurely lunch break, souvenir shop-ping, and a visit to the Museum of the Bavar-ian Kings before your return to Baumholder.

Great city trips, fun playgrounds for kids, delicious recipes and much more.

Explore your new home

Stuff ed bell pepperSide dishHere’s a staple on German dinner tables that is often made in the oven but works perfectly on a grill as well. Many recipes call for whole peppers but this way they are done much quicker and you bear a lower risk of burning the edges. Try to look for symmetric bell peppers when shopping to make sure they don’t fall over on the tray.

Start to fi nish: 15 minutes(+25 on grill)Servings: 6Ingredients:• 3 bell peppers• 10 oz (300g) feta cheese• 10 oz (300g) cherry tomatoes• 4 oz (130g) spring onions• 1 oz (20g) chives• 2 tbsp soy sauce• 2 tbsp olive oil• half a clove of garlic, crushed• salt, pepper, chili fl akes• shredded cheese of choice

Preheat grill to lowest fl ame. Cube feta, tomatoes, onions and put them in a bowl. Season with soy sauce, olive oil and and spices. Mix well. Scoop out the washed and halved bell peppers’ insides. Stuff them and sprinkle shredded cheese on top. Put on an aluminium tray and close the grill’s lid. Broil for 25-30 minutes. Check frequently to make sure the edges don’t burn.Tip: Add minced meat to use it as a main dish.

Hessian Potato SaladSide dishEvery German will tell you how you’re preparing your potato salad is wrong. It’s not personal. It’s regional. Using mayonnaise is a classic way to go but not summer-friendly. In fact, most German schools and preschools prohibit dishes containing mayonnaise at offi cial gatherings. So here’s the Hessian way. The only way, if you ask my grandmother: simple, hearty and safe to sit in the sun.

Start to fi nish: 10 minutes(+30 to boil potatoes)Servings: 4Ingredients:• 2lbs (1kg) potatoes (any waxy

kind will do, e.g. Annabelle / Galatiner)

• 1 cup vegetable- or beef broth• 7 tbsp. vinegar• 1 onion• 1 tbsp. mustard (optional)• chives, parsley, salt, pepper• 4 tbsp. vegetable oil (e.g. rape-

seed- or sunfl ower oil)

Boil the potatoes (a day in advance, if possible) and store at room tem-perature. Sauté the fi nely chopped onions. Dissolve the mustard in broth; let cool. Thinly slice the potatoes. Fold the potatoes in the broth-, vinegar-, oil- and spice mixture before adding onions, chives and parsley.Tip: my grandma serves it with crispy strips of bacon and cherry tomatoes on top.

Arugula and Pasta SaladSide dishPasta salad can probably be found at every single BBQ buff et in Ger-many. Why? Because it’s delicious, nutritious and quick to make. Experiment with diff erent vegeta-bles, meat, cheese and more to fi nd your personal favorite.

Start to fi nish: 10 minutes(+10 to boil pasta)Servings: 4Ingredients:• 10 oz (300g) pasta• 10 oz (300g) arugula• 20 cherry tomatoes• 15 dried tomatoes• 1.5 bell peppers• 3 oz (80g) nuts or seeds of choice• 7 oz (200g) soft goat or feta

cheese• 8 tbsp. balsamic vinegar• 2 tsp. mustard• 4 tbsp. honey• 6 tbsp. vegetable oil• Salt, pepper, chili fl akes, cumin,

turmeric

Boil the pasta according to its package and let cool. Dice the vegetables. Roast the nuts in a hot, oil-free pan. This only takes a few seconds so make sure not to take your eyes off it. Mix the dressing (season to liking) and pour over the noodles and vegetables. Sprinkle cheese and seeds on top.Tip: Perfect to take on the go. Store it in Tupperware and off you go to picnics, parties, school or work.

Shashlik kebabsMain dishVoilà, another easy dish that bursts with fl avor, protein and vitamins. Children can help with the as-sembly and choose their favorite vegetables to make sure everyone is happy. Feel free to experiment with fruit like pineapple or papaya to fi nd out what you like best.

Start to fi nish: 15 minutes(+ time on grill)Servings: 4Ingredients:• 18 oz (500g) chicken• 5 tbsp. olive oil• 1 bell pepper• 10 mushrooms• 1 zucchini• 1 eggplant• 5 oz (150g) cherry tomatoes• salt, pepper, oregano, paprika,

turmeric, thyme to taste• 16 wooden shashlik sticks

Wash, dry and cube or slice the chicken and vegetables. Mix olive oil and spices in a bowl before coating the chicken. Alternate be-tween meat and vegetables when assembling your masterpiece on the sticks. Grill on all sides until well done.

WurstsalatMain dishThe idea of turning sausages into a salad might just be the most Ger-man one yet. Yup, no green stuff , just sausage. This can serve as a main dish or sandwich topping. Popular sides include fried pota-toes, fries and black bread.

Start to fi nish: 20 minutesServings: 4Ingredients:• 9 oz (250g) Bologna (preferably

thinly sliced)• 7 oz (200g) gouda (or any other

kind of hard cheese)• 1 medium sized onion• 5 large pickles• 3 tbsp vinegar• 6 tbsp vegetable oil• Salt and pepper to taste• optional: 1 tbsp mustard, chives

and radishes

Cut everything into very thin strips. Mix with the vinegar, oil and mus-tard. Let it sit in the fridge for a few hours.Tip: Serve it on a toasted or grilled slice of bread with plenty of garlic or herb butter.

Flavored WaterDrinkFruity water is the perfect alterna-tive to soda since it is just as tasty, less sticky and a lot healthier. Say Here are six super easy, yet exotic, ways to stay hydrated this summer without sacrifi cing any of the fl avor you’re used to.

Start to fi nish: 5-10 minutesServings: 4Ingredients:• 1 lime, 1 lemon, 1 orange• 2 cups blackberries,1 sprig of sage• 2 cups watermelon, 1 sprig of

rosemary• 2 cups pineapples, 1 sprig of mint• 2 cups raspberries, 1 lime• 1/3 cucumber, 3 sprigs of laven-

der and 2 sprigs of mint

Mix/mash a sliced or cubed selec-tion of these ingredients in a jar or pitcher and add 32oz/ 1l of fl at or sparkling water. Let it sit in the fridge for at least one hour. Fin-ish the look with some ice cubes. Almost all fruits, vegetables and herbs (fresh and frozen) can be used, so get creative! Some com-binations may seem odd at fi rst but don’t hesitate to try your way through them. Tip: If you want it to be sweeter, you can add a little honey or agave syrup.(Recipe by www.theyummylife.com)

Germans love a good summer barbecue as much as Americans do but what they put on their plates doesn’t exactly resemble hot dogs, burgers and co. ese recipes can easily be prepared in advance to make sure you can enjoy the evening with friends or family instead of being stuck in the kitchen while pit master and guests are already sipping rosé in the sun. Bonus: most of them can be modi ed to taste to help you include your favorite ingredients or get rid of whatever’s le in the fridge. Feel free to substitute away!
