GREAT location…The picturesque island of Malta, and the sister islands of Gozo and Comino

can be found right in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. Malta, which has

been a European member state since 2004, provides an ideal environment

to study English as English is one of the two official languages of the Island.

Malta also offers a varied number of activities which can be enjoyed by

everyone.

The islands are only a few hours flight away from major European cities and

within easy reach of North Africa.

IDEAL climate…The Maltese climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, idyllic summers,

warm autumns, and short, mild winters with sporadic rainfall. Annual rainfall

in Malta is low, averaging 578mm a year, and the length of the dry season

in summer is longer than in neighbouring Italy. Sea bathing is quite possible

well in to the ‘winter’ months, and the peak beach season can last until mid

to late October.

RICH in culture…Malta’s rich history goes back to some 4500 years BC, when some people

from the neighbouring island of Sicily decided to cross the narrow waters.

Since then the Islands have been occupied by the Phoenicians, the Romans,

the Arabs, the Knights of St John, the French and the British. The influence

of all of the different cultures can still be felt and seen in Malta today with

the megalithic temples dating from 5,000 BC, baroque palaces from the

times of The Knights of St. John, medieval walled towns, golden sandstone

fortresses and buildings, with fine examples of medieval, baroque and

renaissance architecture.

The islands became part of the British Empire in 1814 and remained a

British colony until 1964 when the islands gained their independence.

English is one of Malta’s two official languages and is becoming more and

more the preferred language among the youngsters. The influence of the

British can be seen everywhere: the Maltese drive on the left; the most

important daily newspapers are in English; the education system is British;

the judicial system is British; shop signs are in English; and you can even

see red phone boxes in some places or eat a typical English breakfast!

Due to its rich history, Malta has now become synonymous with the

learning of English and a great place to enjoy cultural visits, colossal

nightlife entertainment, clear blue sea and the most welcome shinning sun

imaginable!

A WARM welcome…The Maltese are famous for their hospitality and warm welcome. Everyone

wants to help make your stay as enjoyable as possible. One of the many

celebrations not to be missed is the Maltese “Festa”, a colourful event with

magnificent firework displays and street pageantry, which take place in

every village on every weekend throughout the summer and where you can

really see the Maltese in action! Come and see for yourself!

Valletta has many titles, all recalling its rich historical

past. It is the “modern” city built by the Knights of St.

John; a masterpiece of the baroque; a European Art City;

and a World Heritage City. But these are just some of its

faces and fortunes. Valletta is also Malta´s capital city:

a living, working city, the administrative and commercial

heart of the islands. Nowhere in Malta is the life of the

islands reflected more than here.

The city is busy by day, yet retains a timeless atmosphere.

The grid of narrow streets houses some of Europe´s

finest art works, churches and palaces. Valletta hosts

a vast cultural programme. Streets events are staged

against the city´s magnificent baroque architecture

and floodlit bastions. There is theatre and music and all

manner of things to see and join in, from avant garde

art to traditional church festas.

The city is a delight to shop in: narrow side streets are

full of tiny shops selling antiques, maps, books, prints

and jewellery. Walking around Valletta, you´ll come

across an intriguing historical site around every corner:

votive statues, niches, fountains and coats of arms high

up on parapets. And when you need to stop and take

it all in, the city yields up squares, courtyards, gardens

and number of cafés, right on cue.
