WASK - WATERTOWN AREA SWIM KIDS

WASK GROUPSThe following are guidelines and any advancement to the next swim group will need to be approved by the coaching staff after assessing the swimmers strength, technique and mental readiness (parents/guardians will be consulted in this process).

BLUE 1 – NOVICEThis is an entry level group where swimmers learn the fundamentals of competitive swimming in a positive, fun, and supportive team environment. The goal of Blue 1 is to instill a love for swimming while focusing on teamwork, fundamentals and technique. In this group, swimmers will learn each of the four strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle) and work on developing their starts and turns. When ready, Blue 1 swimmers are encouraged to swim 1-2 swim meets during the swim season.

• Swimmers can join as young as 5 years old and once they have completed Level 3 swimming lessons or are able to swim one length of the pool freestyle or backstroke (25 yards).

• Practices consist of roughly 500-800 yards.• Blue 1 is a 45-minute practice session during the Fall & Winter

seasons.

BLUE 2 – INTERMEDIATEThis is an age level group where swimmers will build on the skills learned in Blue 1 in a positive, fun and supportive team environment. The goal of Blue 2 is to nurture the swimmers love for the sport while focusing on developing sound technique through the use of more complex swimming drills and training sets with an emphasis on stroke mechanics and aerobic development. Blue 2 swimmers are encouraged to swim 2-4 swim meets during the swim season.

• Swimmers must have the ability to swim a 200 IM (50 Butterfly, 50 Backstroke, 50 Breaststroke and 50 Freestyle) with 3 out of the 4 strokes performed legally, working toward the fourth!

• Practices consist of roughly 1,000-2,000 yards.• Blue 2 is a 60-minute practice session during the Fall & Winter

seasons.

BLUE 3 – ADVANCEDThis is a senior level group where swimmers will work to perfect their technique in a positive, fun and supportive team environment. The goal of Blue 3 is to continue to foster the swimmers love for the sport, while focusing on building both aerobic and anaerobic capacity to help the swimmer attain their maximum potential. Swimmers are expected to be 100% committed and focused during the season and during each practice. Difficult sets will be performed while working on the most advanced skills so the swimmer can learn to perform at their highest level of competition. Blue 3 swimmers are encouraged to swim 4-6 swim meets during the swim season.

• Swimmers must be able to swim a 400 yard IM and a 500 yard Freestyle legally.

• Swimmers must be at least 10 years old to participate in Blue 3.• Practices consist of swimming roughly 3,000-4,500 yards. • Blue 3 is a 90-minute practice session during the Fall & Winter

A well rounded education addresses not just a student’s academic needs, but also their social and physical development, and at W-M Public Schools, our goal is to provide numerous opportunities and activities for students both within and after the school day.

At W-M Public Schools, you’ll find a plethora of artistic opportunities. From the earliest levels, students have the opportunity to participate in both music and the visual arts, including a 30+ year history of Summer Youth Theatre.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has become one of the most important educational focuses in our modern world, and it is a huge part of a W-M education. W-M is dedicated to providing students the opportunity to work with and develop their skills in both science and technology.

Hands-on science exploration through outdoor classroom and school gardens are an integral part of the classroom experience for students in Pre K-12.
