TCU Football Weight Room Records

It's a night of no helmets. No pads. Just football players, rock-hard determination andhundreds of pounds of steel weight.

They call it Night of Champions, but it's really the culmination of months of off-sea-son conditioning. It’s a night of power, ego and testosterone - as in who can lift howmuch, how many times.

“The Night of Champions is a showcase event where some of TCU's strongest ath-letes compete in the bench press, incline, squat and power clean lifts,” said HornedFrog Strength and Conditioning Coach Don Sommer. “The players take pride in theiraccomplishments in the weight room and work hard to achieve their goals. They knowthat the hard work they do here will ultimately help them where it counts the most –

on the playing field.”The Frogs have come a long

way since Gary Patterson andthe TCU coaching staff startedthe program. Every footballweight lifting record has beenbroken, some of them multipletimes.

“People talk about measur-ing a football program in bowlgames, but this is where suc-cess starts – in this weightroom,” said Patterson. “This isthe behind-the-scenes story ofhow TCU football has madesuch tremendous strides.”

Kyle Wallis, Matt Parker, Mar Magnussen, Don Sommer, BrandonJohnson and Joe Walker direct the Horned Frogs’ strength andconditioning program.

Iron Frog AwardThe Night of Champions is

a culmination of TCU’s off-season conditioning programwhere players try to claimthe coveted Iron Frog Award. The award is based on aPower Index (PI).

The PI is determined byadding the combined weightlifted in the bench press, squat and power clean, divid-ed by the player’s weight.

The 2006 Iron Frogs wereBrian Bonner, Cody Moore,David Hawthorne and MarvinWhite.

TCU LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

2006 TCU Football Media Guide

Seven years ago, the TCU coaching staff formed a groupcalled the TCU Leadership Council. The group consisted of

a player from each position. Game captains are chosen eachweek while permanent captains are selected at the end ofthe season.

The following is the purpose of the Leadership Council, according to TCU headcoach Gary Patterson:

“We wanted to develop more leadership and create a situation where leader-ship is passed on from one class to the next; also, where each position has avoice. We got a lot of good feedback and ideas from the players.

“If the players have the opportunity for input, they have ownership. If theyhave ownership, then they’re more accountable to themselves and to their team-mates. It becomes ‘our decision,’ instead of ‘my decision.’”

TCU PAYS TRIBUTE TO LT

With the San Diego Chargers having a bye weekend,Tomlinson was able to return to his alma mater as part of “LTDay.” During a halftime ceremony, his TCU jersey No. 5 was hon-ored. No other player will wear that number without Tomlinson’spermission.

Many of Tomlinson’s former teammates joined him on the fieldfor the halftime festivities that also included a highlight video ofhis Frog career.

As a senior, Tomlinson captured the 2000 Doak Walker Awardas the nation’s top running back. He placed fourth in voting for theHeisman Trophy that year.

Tomlinson topped the nation in rushing his final two seasons. He had 1,850 yards in 1999 and 2,158 in 2000. As a junior,Tomlinson ran for an NCAA single-game record 406 yards in a 47-14 victory over UTEP. He totaled 5,263 career yards and 54 rush-ing touchdowns.

Tomlinson saw the Frogs play twice in the final three weeks ofthe regular season. He was on the sideline, wearing a TCUsweatshirt, when TCU defeated San Diego State Oct. 29 atQualcomm Stadium. The Chargers had a home game the next dayversus Kansas City.

“It was nice being back. Of course, they had a great victory towrap up their conference. It was fun. A lot of my teammates cameback. The crowd was phenomenal. They gave me a standing ova-tion. It was a special moment and emotional. Being back in thatstadium brought back a lot of emotions. I had to fight back tears. It was obviously a great moment that every player dreams about. My teammates being there made it a special moment.

It made me remember when I was at TCU – running out of thattunnel, scoring touchdowns and hearing that big horn go off. Itwas the whole part of the game, remembering the excitementthat went on when we played.”

FROGS IN THE COMMUNITY

The community outreach activities conducted by the TCUAthletics Department are as many and as varied as the 20 TCUathletic teams. Our goals include supporting a local or nationalcharity and participating in a department-wide outreach initiativewhich includes SuperFrog’s Reading Challenge. This one-of-a-kindprogram provides elementary children across the Metroplex incen-tives for achieving reading goals. In cooperation with local ele-mentary schools, TCU student-athletes are helping kids improvetheir skills through visits to classrooms.

In the 2005-06 academic year, TCU student-athletes, coachesand administrators made countless appearances in communityoutreach projects and donated time, talent and resources to awide variety of different charitable organizations.
