Sony started with sound. For the moment, forget about BRAVIA® televisions, Handycam®
cameras and PlayStation® consoles. Before any of that, Sony
was an audio company. Even the name Sony comes from sonus,
Latin for sound. We've been breaking sound barriers for almost
60 years. And we've been advancing audio technology all the
way from the recording studio to your ears.
Milestones in Mobile Audio. Sony has an amazing track record in Mobile Audio. You can
see — and hear — this heritage today in every Sony® component.
1979 - World’s first mobile PWM amp. The PWM switching power
supply was far more efficient than conventional amps, as Sony
demonstrated with the XM-1.
1981 - World’s first mobile frequency synthesis tuner. Before
Sony, tuning a car radio meant turning a knob connected to a
sloppy, imprecise variable capacitor. The Sony XT-1 changed
all that.
1982 - World’s first mobile diversity reception tuner. Two FM
antennas can do what one cannot — minimize multipath
distortion. Sony proved it with the XR-100.
1984 - World’s first mobile full-logic cassette deck. Before Sony,
the Stop, Play, Fast Forward and Rewind buttons operated clunky
levers and rods. Sony replaced them with electronically operated
touch-buttons in the XR-740 and XR-780.
1984 - World’s first mobile CD player. It only stands to reason
that the company that co-invented the Compact Disc was first to
bring the wonders of digital audio into the car, with the CDX-5 CD
player and CDX-R7 CD/tuner.
1986 - World’s first CD changer. CD changers actually
happened in Mobile before they made it into homes.
1986 - World’s first Mobile A/V system. This included the XTV-5
and XTV-8 monitors, the EVX-S8 8mm video deck and the
XVM-9 TV tuner with diversity reception.
1991 - World’s first Mobile digital preamplifier. Part of the
legendary Mobile ES system, the XES-P1 included digital volume,
balance, fader, parametric equalization and sound fields.

Sony BusWay back when Sony created the trunk-mounted 10-disc CD
changer, we needed some way to connect and control the
changer from an in-dash receiver. This led to the Sony Bus,
a flexible architecture for expanding your Sony Mobile Audio
system in ways that could scarcely be imagined way back when!
Consider the system expansion possibilities:
> XT-100HD HD Radio®4 tuner
> XA-120IP iPod®2 interface
> RM-X60M//R Remote Commander® Marine controller
> Third-party satellite radio tuners3 (require service subscription)
> XA-C40 Sony Bus switcher
> XA-300 auxiliary input adaptor
The system starts with an in-dash receiver equipped with a
Sony bus terminal, which handles control signals. Most Sony
bus products include a pass-through connection, so you can
daisy-chain additional Sony Bus components. Audio
connections are made on line-level RCA cables.
USB DirectYou don't need to spring for a digital music player to enjoy
the benefit of MP3s. Simply save your music on an affordable
USB "thumb" drive, like Sony's own MicroVault® drives (sold
separately). With the USB Direct feature, simply plug in the drive
and play! USB Direct also works with selected USB-equipped
digital music players.6

Digital Music Plus AdvancedAs good as they are, today's digital music players use
compressed codecs that can't match the sound quality of a
studio master recording. That's why Sony developed Digital Music
Plus (DM+) and DM+ Advanced. The system offers three levels of
digital enhancement for the clearest possible sound. Settings
for Low, Mid and High compression optimize bass, treble, phase
and harmonics.

> Silicon-on-insulator MOSFET power ICs improve transient

> World class signal-to-noise ratios of 120 dB.
Preamp OutputsSony receivers deliver high power — 52 watts x4 — but we
don’t stop there. Preamp outputs let you expand your system
with external amplifiers to really power up your ride. You can
use the receiver's built-in amplifier for the front speakers and
go with external amps for subwoofers and rears. Or go full-on
custom with a complete set of outboard amps.
24
Receiver Technology
Built-in HPF/LPF CrossoverFull-range speakers may be okay for "factory radio" systems,
but they have major limitations. For one, full-range speakers
can't produce really low bass the way subwoofers can. And as
the amplifier tries to push bass through full-range speakers, the
treble distorts. That’s why advanced audio systems use multiple,
specialized speakers, including subwoofers, mids and tweeters.
And that’s why Sony® receivers have built-in active crossovers.
The high-pass filter (HPF) strips out the bass and connects to an
amp just for mids and treble. The low pass filter (LPF) sends just
the low bass to a subwoofer amp.
EQ Tone ControlsSony’s EQ is way beyond traditional bass and treble controls
> A full 10 dB boost and cut range.
> Six preset EQ curves and a customizable seventh curve enable
you to adjust the equalization to your liking.
> Parametric EQ (on select models) even enables you to adjust
the center frequencies for super precise tonal optimization.

Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO)While the car is an ideal place to crank up tunes, a car's speaker
locations don't make for ideal stereo imaging. Door-mounted
speakers tend to be too low and too close to your ears. Sony
comes to the rescue with Dynamic Soundstage Organizer (DSO).
This digital process elevates and widens the stereo soundstage
for a bigger, better listening experience. Three levels enable you
to optimize the effect for your specific car.
Radio Data System (RDS)MP3 players have artist and album title displays. So does
Sirius™ / XM™ satellite radio. Now FM stations can have it too.
The Radio Data System (RDS) enables artist and title information
to accompany the FM broadcast. Selected Sony receivers
automatically display the information.
Tuner TechnologySony receivers are known for exceptional tuning. And we’ve
made them even better. Our latest generation of receivers
boasts better signal-to-noise ratios, lower interference, better
multipath rejection and better stereo separation. It all adds
up to immaculate reception.

AmplifiersWhen it comes to giving you a good kick in the pants, there's no
substitute for Sony® Xplod™ amplifiers. Flexible output configurations
fit your needs from one channel of power to many. With audiophile
Class D output stages and Dynamic Distortion Suppressor, your
music isn't just loud, it's also clear. And sophisticated input level,
crossover and low boost adjustments enable you to optimize the
sound for your choice of speakers.

Channel flexibility. Ask any audiophile or mobile audio expert. You'll hear that "bridging"
a pair of amplifier channels results in a single channel of roughly
twice the power. Many of today's best systems take advantage of this
high power technology. That's why all Sony® multi-channel amps can
be bridged for maximum flexibility.
Amplifier Technology
Sony 4/3/2-channel ampsSony takes channel bridging one step further with 4-channel
amps that enable both pairs to be bridged. The result is a
2-channel amp of extraordinary power.
Sony Class D Mono ampsThese subwoofer specialists are the only Sony Mobile amps
that can't be bridged, because they only have 1-channel.
Sony 4/3-channel ampsAll our 4-channel amps can drive four full-range speakers. Or you
can bridge to drive two full-range speakers and a subwoofer.
Sony 2/1-channel ampsOur 2-channel amps can drive a stereo pair of speakers or be
bridged to deliver a single channel of roughly twice the power.
It's a good choice for driving a subwoofer.

Internal crossoverTo get the full benefit of your speakers, you’ll need to send them
the appropriate musical frequencies. That’s why Sony® Xplod™
amplifiers offer internal crossovers. A crossover consists of two
filters: the High Pass Filter (HPF) sends everything but the deepest
bass to full-range speakers while the Low Pass Filter (LPF) sends
only the deep bass to the subwoofers. Filter adjustments enable
you to set the frequency at which the music "crosses over"
from full-range speakers to subwoofer. A separate bass boost
adjustment enables you to optimize the bass for your specific
choice of subwoofer.
High level inputs The best way to connect an amplifier is called "line level" or
"preamp output." This uses audio cables with the familiar white
and red RCA jacks. But what if you're using a factory radio that
doesn't have preamp outputs? Sony amplifiers come to the
rescue with high-level inputs. Simply connect the speaker outputs
of your receiver to the high-level inputs of the amplifier. Auto
sensing will even switch the amplifier on automatically whenever
the head unit is on.
42
To sub or not to sub One of the glories of custom mobile audio is a big amplifier
driving a subwoofer. Freed from the responsibility of reproducing
midrange and treble sound — the "sub" generates nothing but
deep bass. The results can be spectacular, pumping out lows
with a volume and realism that rivals the live concert experience.
As in home theater systems, a single subwoofer can perform
well because deep bass is not "directional." The human auditory
system can't tell where the bass is coming from.
Dynamic Distortion Suppressor When conventional amps are driven too hard, they "clip" off
the signal peaks, sending masses of distortion to the speakers.
The Dynamic Distortion Suppressor of Sony's XM-ZZR3301
reduces peaks without clipping them harshly. So distortion
is substantially reduced.
Class D Amplification"Powerful" doesn't have to mean "big," "heavy" or "hot."
Conventional Class AB amplifiers only manage to convert
50 to 60% of incoming power into output to the speakers.
The rest gets dissipated as heat. At 90%, Sony's Class D
amplification is far more efficient than traditional Class AB
amplifiers. As a result, the XM-1S and XM-ZZR3301 deliver
incredible power without filling up — or heating up — your
trunk. These Class D amps are designed or subwoofer use only.
Active Thermal ControlWhen the going gets hot, conventional thermal control simply
shuts your amp down until it's cool. Sony's XM-ZZR3301 has a
better way. Active Thermal Control automatically lowers the
output until it's safe to return to normal operation.

SpeakersThe tweeters create a soundstage that appears to float in midair.
The midranges reproduce the human voice with the presence of
a live concert. The subwoofers deliver the deepest bass drums with
an impact you can feel on every kick. This is the way mobile audio
ought to sound — and does — with Sony® Xplod™ Mobile speakers.

Mica Reinforced Cellular Glass Fiber Cone Select Sony® Xplod™ subwoofer cones are
constructed using a woven glass fiber
reinforced with a mica cellular composite
to provide a super rigid cone for better
response.
Passive CrossoversSony speakers use passive crossovers
to separate the frequency bands for
woofers, midrange, and tweeters. These
carefully-designed crossover networks
lower distortion by providing each driver
with only the correct frequencies.
Subwoofer ConfigurationsSony single and dual-voice coil subwoofers enable you to configure systems of awesome
power. For example, "bridging" a stereo amplifier to drive a single subwoofer results in
nearly twice the power. In addition, wiring a pair of 4-ohm subwoofers in parallel results
in a 2-ohm load, into which Sony® Class-D amplifiers will also deliver roughly twice the
power. With Sony amps and subwoofers, the power is yours.
Laser-Etched LogoThe Xplod logo on the subwoofer cone is
carefully and precisely etched with a laser
beam using a burn-in process.
Wiring a dual voice coil subwoofer in
parallel results in a 2-ohm load, a good
choice for increased power with Sony
Class D amplifiers.
Wiring in series results in an 8-ohm load,
a good choice when you're wiring
multiple pairs of drivers to an amplifier.

Seaworthy entertainment.Reliable operation on the sea is no accident. It’s the result of
detailed engineering in using silicone rubber, circuit board

Not just splash proof: Meets IPx5 requirementsNot all marine audio systems are as tough as this. Imagine
pointing hoses at an audio component. Now imagine turning the
water on and letting loose a gusher of gallons per minute — for
three full minutes. That's the requirement of IPx5, the international
standard met by Sony Marine head units, controllers and
speakers.8
Rigorously tested to resist salt sprayIf you live on the coasts, splashing is not the only threat to your
equipment. Salt spray is amazingly corrosive. That's why the
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) created the
B117 torture test for salt spray. Sony Marine head units, controllers
and speakers pass the test, for superb durability.
Anti-corrosion coated circuit boardsYou can't see inside Sony Marine products. But when you're out
on the water, humidity can get inside, causing rust that can
undermine reliability. That's why Sony uses conformal coated
circuit boards. All Sony Marine products, including amplifiers
are safeguarded by HAYA high humidity resistant vinyl resin. It's
the same compound that protects the circuit boards of outdoor
traffic safety equipment.
Also tested to withstand sunlightJust as you can get sunburned, the finishes on your equipment
can fade, crack and peel after prolonged exposure to sunlight.
And just as with sunburn, ultraviolet (UV) light is the biggest
culprit. The finishes on Sony Marine head units, controllers and
speakers are specifically designed to withstand another ASTM
test: G154 for UV resistance.

Qualifying your customerFew techniques on the sales floor are quite so powerful as
qualifying your customer. After you've said hello and introduced
yourself, ask for the customer's name. Then use their name and
ask the right questions about the customer's needs. By asking
questions, you'll be accomplishing many things at once:
Product Applications
1. You'll be demonstrating that you're sincerely interested in
the customer's needs. This will inspire the customer to trust
you more. And it's not even an act. You really are interested,
because...
2. You'll be gathering all the information you need to make
a smart recommendation, and...
3. You'll have exactly what you need to close the sale. When you
describe the system, be sure to repeat what the customer told
you, as in, "You told me you really like listening to music on your
iPhone® unit. So I'm recommending Sony's USB 1-wire solution..."
We suggest that you ask two or three specific questions,
as follows:
