The Church of England is part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church

worshipping the one true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It professes the

faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the catholic

creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each

generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in

its historic formularies, the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, the Book of

Common Prayer and the Ordering of Bishops, Priests and Deacons.

In the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this

inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the

grace and truth of Christ to this generation?

Standing before the Bishop, the Honorary Canon designate and the Canon Precentor designate say

The Declaration of Assent

I, Andrew Horsfall, and I, Gary O’Neill do so affirm, and accordingly declare

my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in

the catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of

England bear witness; and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments

I will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by canon.

The New Testament Reading

A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

Read by Christine O’Neill.

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very

thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact

it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing

good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it.

For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do

what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand.

For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another

law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells

in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of

death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

(7.15-25a)

This is the word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

All stand for

The Gospel Reading

The Canon Precentor says

Alleluia, Alleluia.

The word of the Lord is the good news announced to you.

Alleluia.

The Lord be with you

and also with you.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

10

Jesus said, ‘But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in

the market-places and calling to one another,

“We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;

we wailed, and you did not mourn.”

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon”; the

Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Look, a glutton and a

drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners!” Yet wisdom is vindicated by her

deeds.’

Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his deeds of power had

been done, because they did not repent. ‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you,

Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and

Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you,

on the day of judgement it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for

you. And you, Capernaum,

will you be exalted to heaven?

No, you will be brought down to Hades.

For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have

remained until this day. But I tell you that on the day of judgement it will be more

tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you.’

At that time Jesus said, ‘I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because

you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed

them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been

handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father,

and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son

chooses to reveal him.

‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will

give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and

humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and

my burden is light.’

(11.16-19; 25-30)

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, O Christ.

An organ fanfare is played. All sit for

The Peace

The Bishop says

God is love

and those who live in love live in God

and God lives in them.

The peace of the Lord be always with you,

and also with you.

The Liturgy of the Sacrament

Organ music is played as the altar is prepared. All sit.

The Taking of the Bread and Wine

When the Altar has been prepared, all stand and the Bishop says

Be present, be present

Lord Jesus Christ, our risen high priest;

make yourself known in the breaking of bread. Amen.

12

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you,

and also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation,

always and everywhere to give you thanks,

holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

From sunrise to sunset this day is holy,

for Christ has risen from the tomb

and scattered the darkness of death

with light that will not fade.

This day the risen Lord walks with your gathered people,

unfolds for us your word,

and makes himself known in the breaking of the bread.

And though the night will overtake this day

you summon us to live in endless light,

the never-ceasing sabbath of the Lord.

And so, with choirs of angels

and with all the heavenly host,

we proclaim your glory

and join their unending song of praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father,

through Jesus Christ, our Lord;

and as we obey his command,

13

send your Holy Spirit,

that broken bread and wine outpoured

may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friends

and, taking bread, he praised you.

He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.

Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:

Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,

in him we plead with confidence his sacrifice

made once for all upon the cross.

Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation,

we proclaim his death and resurrection

until he comes in glory.

Great is the mystery of faith:

Christ has died:

Christ is risen:

Christ will come again.

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day

when your kingdom comes

and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.

Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms

and bring us with the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints

to feast at your table in heaven.

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

14

The Lord’s Prayer

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray, each in our own language:

Notre père, qui êtes aux cieux… Missierna, li inti fis-smewwiet…

Vater Unser im Himmel… Padre nosso, que estais nos céus…

Padre nostro che sei nei cieli… Ojcze nasz, któryś jest w niebie…

Otče náš, jenž jsi na nebesích… ،الذي في السماوات… Tėve Mūsų, kuris esi danguje!... Ein Tad, yr hwn wyt yn y nefoedd…

Tatal nostru care esti in ceruri…

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come; thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation;

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The bishop breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this bread

to share in the body of Christ.

Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

All say

Agnus Dei Jesus, Lamb of God,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, bearer of our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, redeemer of the world,

grant us peace.

15

The Giving of Communion

The bishop says

God’s holy gifts

for God’s holy people.

Jesus Christ is holy,

Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

The people receive communion in one kind, standing at their places. Organ music is played. If you are

unable to stand, please sit with your hands outstretched. If you do not wish to receive communion or a

blessing, please simply remain seated.

The Prayer after Communion

Silence is kept. All stand as the Bishop says

Let us pray.

Eternal God,

comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken,

you have fed us at the table of life and hope:

teach us the ways of gentleness and peace,

that all the world may acknowledge

the kingdom of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Heavenly Father,

we embrace your call for us to make disciples,

to be witnesses and to grow leaders.

Give us eyes to see your vision,

ears to hear the prompting of your Spirit

and courage to follow in the footsteps of your Son,

our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

16

The Blessing and Dismissal

The Lord be with you

and also with you.

The God of all grace,

who called you to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus,

establish, strengthen and settle you in the faith;

and the blessing of God almighty,

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

The Bishop says

Go in the peace of Christ.

Thanks be to God.

As the procession departs the organist plays
