The Roadster Factory supplies its own sub-frame mountings for the TR7.since onglnal components have been discontinued by Rover Group (formerlyBritish Leyland). in fact. we supply two grades of mounts, a stock grade anda~ uprated grade. The uprated grade will make everything a little more rigid,not to say rock hard. as our aim in offering uprated bushes is not to make yourcar into an uncomfortable racing car. To repair a section, simply cut Iout the affected area and braze, we!d or hammer-wel~e;~r~;2~;~ s;a ]part of the repair panel as required; smooth the welds; apply ~ller as- [necessary; prime; sand; paint. Using rust repair panels, a uni-body car such [as the TJR 7 or TR8 can often be repmred to a very high standard at a modest [expense.

APPENDIXEnergy Ignition

.~p~Lfier Desedp~on .....The amplifier consists of a solid state electromc module nousem m an aluminum case, prewiredwith two leads which are connected to the low tension terminals of the igm’tlan coil. Connec-tions to the distributor pickup are made by an assembly of two leads inside a screeningbraid which plugs into a socket on one side of the amplifier.

Note: The amplifier and screening braid require good ground connections with the vehi-cle body. Ensure that good metal-to-metal contact is made when the amplifier is boltedin position.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Introdnefion of Constant Ener~D" Igni~on .$.ystem _ .This electronic ignition system is suppfied to Bnush Leyland anu is now fitted to the JaguarXJ6 range of vehicles. A four cylinder version is now being supplied for other applications,and a vehicle cross reference is enclosed.

Distributor DeseriptlonThe distributor incorporates a standard automatic advance system, anti-flash shield, rotorarm and cover but the traditional contact breaker is replaced by a reluctor and pickupassembly.

The reluctor is a gear-like component (with as man~ teeth as there are cylinders to the engine)and it is mounted on the distributor shaft in place of the cam. The pickup consists of awinding around a pole piece attached to a permanent magnet.

The distributor is prewired with two leads terminating in a moulded two pin inhibitedconnector.

Warn~gs1. The electronic module contains an Integrated Circuit, a thick film file and a high

volittge Darlingto’n transistor mounted on a Beryllia tile. Finely divided boryllia istoxic and it is therefore inadvisable to open or crush the electronic module.

2. Ignition circuits induce high voltages which could be dangerous. Care should be ex-eretsed when working on vehicles with the ignition switched on.

When a reluetor tooth passes across the pickup limb, the magnetic field strength aroundthe pickup winding is intensified creating a voltage in the winding. The rise and fall of thisvoltage is sensed by the amplifier and is used to trigger the transistorised output stage ofthe amplifier.

The igm’llon coil used in this system is a nominal 6V unit. There is no separate ballast resistorin the circuit. The amplifier controls the maximum current flowing in the LT eireuit.

vice should be carried out to the distributor. When the engine is stationary and ecol, and

the ignition switch is "’off":

Every 12~000 miles (20,O00 lun)In addition to the routine 6,000 mile service, carry out the following:(a) Lubricate the pickup plate centre bearing with a drop of clean engine oil in each the two holes provided. (Reluctor should be removed to reveal lubrication holes).(b) Check the carbon brush for freedom of movement in its housing. Replace the brushif it is excessively worn.(e) Although the auto-advance mechanism is lubricated for life during assembly, one two drops of clean engine oil may be injected through an aperture in the base plate.(continued)

The nominal service setting is 0.008"-0.014" (0.20mm-0.35mm)

In production, however, the pickup is positioned to produce a predetermined signal strengthas the distributor is run at slow speed. The resulting air gap may vary between 0.006"(.15mm) and 0.014" (.35ram).

The original gap setting must not be altered unless (a) it has been tampered with, (b) the other equipment is shown to be correct.

ProcedureThe air gap is measured between a relucter tooth and the pickup limb (see fig.3). Plasticfeeler gauges should be used, and the ignition should be switched off.

(a) Align a reluctor tooth and pickup limb opposite each other.(b) Slacken both barrel nuts which secure the pickup to the base plate.(e) Use the plastic or nonmetalfic feeler gauge to set the air gap within the limits0.008"-0.14" {0.20mm-0.35mm).(d) Tighten barrel nuts and recheck air gap. Re-adjust if necessary.

Note: The air gap must never be wider than 0.014" (0.35mm).

(a) The distributor must be removed from the engine. When the engine is stationary andcool and the ignition switch is "off".

(i) Set engine to its normal timing mark.(ii) Release distributor cover. Note the position of the rotor arm and dislributor body.(iii) Disconnect electrical connection and remove the distributor.

(b) Remove the rotor arm and anti-flash shield.(e) Use cirelip pliers to remove the cirelip. Lift offthe washer, ’0’ ring, reluctur and coupl-ing ring. Note: The location pegs of the reluctor and coupling ring are inhibited to preventincorrect assembly.(d) Remove the two screws securing the vacuum unit and with a downward movement detachthe vacuum unit from the peg on the underside of the pickup plate.(e) Remove the two screws holding the base plate in position and lift off the assembly com-plete with pickup and leads.(t) Before removing the drive:

(i) scribe marks on the body indicating relevant position between the rotor arm elec-trode (or cam slot) and drive.(ii) support the drive in a vise, and knock out the securing pin. Remove drive andthrust washer.

(g) File away any burr marks on the distributor shaft before withdrawing shaft and actionplate complete with distance collar and action plate.(It) Further dismantling of the distributor is not normally required.

Lubrleatin8 the Distributor(a) Use Rocol MP (moly pad) or equivalent oil to lubricate:

(i) bush bearing surfaces(ii) bearing section of the shaft(ill) pivots and moving parts of the auto-advance system(iv) vacuum ]inkagn pin, over its complete length

(b) l.lghtly smear bearing surfaces of base and pickup plate with Retinax ’A’ grease.(Distributors with vacuum advance only).(e) After the reassemhly apply one or two drops of Shell Turbo ’41’ oil (or clean engineoil) to the felt pad in the top of the reluctor carrier.

ReaseemblyReassembly is a reversal of the dismantling procedure ensuring:(a) distance collar and thrust washer are assembled in the correct urder on the shaft andaction plate.(b) vacuum unit arm locates with the peg on the underside uf the pickup plate (see fig.4).(e) the reluctor is in its correct position. Use circlip pliers to locate the circlip in the grooveof the carrier. (continued)
