2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 5

As I write this report, I hope you are all enjoying your weekends free of Lifesaving, if only for the 4 months of winter. It’s been a great season again, running off so many successful years of Lifesaving at Sunshine Beach SLSC, we keep getting stronger every year. Our successes are, I believe, greatly due to our great club family, we are not so big that we are lost socially around our own club house, we all know each other, and you can always find a friendly face around the clubhouse. It’s our fantastic warm approach to Lifesaving that lends us to such a professional service both between our flags and in our competition arena around the country. I would like to personally thank and congratulate our wonderful team that enables the Lifesaving team to be run so professionally. Our past President for the last 5 years – Craig Law Deputy President – Bryan O’Connor Director of Administration – Michelle Smallman Director of Finance – Yvette McKinley Director of Life Saving – James Ross Director of Junior Activities – Shaun Lees Director of Youth and Cadets – Brooke Finney Director of Surf Sports – Peter Nolan. Each of these committed board members have committed a great deal of their personal lives above and beyond their Lifesaving commitments between the flags. We owe these Directors a great deal of respect for their dedication and focus, often behind the scenes, to ensure our club continues to thrive and succeed as the yard stick against many other surf clubs in our region and state. Our Surf sports and Nipper program continues to grow in size, it delights me to see so many happy families learning water safety skills from our young Under 8’s right up to Masters. Our Sunshine Beach youth provides a great start for our young future Lifesavers, a number of our younger Lifesavers have already saved lives on our beaches and many of our kids going on to become employed Lifeguards. In the competition areas our club surf sports competitors have made some amazing successes in all levels from Branch, State and Nationally at Aussies, well done to those that competed and got themselves on the dais, we continue to show our club pride in all arenas punching well above our weight as a club.

PRESIDENT – Scott Summers

Socially we have enjoyed many events. From the beginning of the season welcome BBQ, to the Actives Christmas Party and end of season BBQ and the drinks with club mates in between. It was a special day for myself when the club held drinks to celebrate the Lifesaver and Lifeguard of the Year award that had been awarded to myself and Max Pettigrove. We had a lot of fun at the Sunshine Beach SLSC Race Day; Ten Grand in the Hand once again proved to be a huge event on the local social calendar, the annual Christmas Day Pudding Hunt was a family favourite. Our Youth and cadets have enjoyed their share of social functions, including movies, dinners and go-karting. Of course the year culminated with our Annual dinner, a chance to get together and celebrate the club’s achievements for the year. Fundraising efforts have been above and beyond this season, our normal efforts such as raffles, water safety at local events and 10 Grand have been well supported and I would like to genuinely thank all members that extend their efforts beyond the beach to the important task of fundraising. Competitors and families going to Aussies really went the extra mile, with many initiatives being organised by various families. Again, my heartfelt thanks. Financially, this coming season will see the clubs biggest financial decision in many years. As you would all be aware by now our trusty but worn club building is in need of some serious TLC. Both management committee’s (Lifesaving and Supporters clubs) have worked together to ensure that we have a viable option for the construction of a new Surf Club building. I thank the work of our Building Committee to date; the final package is being assembled and will soon be ready for discussion at a Special General Meeting. The proposal will see our club closed for about 10 months, the joint committees are working to ensure the least disturbance to our Lifesaving club during the construction time. Obviously the most important aspect is to ensure we continue to provide Lifesaving services to our beach. The closure will be a personal hindrance at times, I ask that people look to the bigger picture to see the outcome of the new surf club, this will require us to all have a positive view and be open to new ideas. In closing for our 2017/2018 season, I certainly thank all our associate members, actives, nippers, sponsors, community and family. Our last year has been a great year, we continue to get stronger every year and the future is bright.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 7

As Deputy President, I have been fortunate to be part of a dynamic team that is dedicated to continuing on the success of our great club. This year has seen my role become more involved in the activities of the Club’s proposed redevelopment and my role required me to be a member of the Building Committee. Whilst there is still a very long way to go before we have a new facility for our club, the time and effort from a number of people within the Club that includes: Warick Redwood, Johnny Gooderham, Dean Bromage, Andrew Fraser, Tim Johnson and our President Scott Summers must be acknowledged. Warick and Tim in the initial planning work were able to complete the Council development approval process without objections is a great outcome for the Sunshine Community. The Building committee are continuing to progress the planning and design phases of the project in preparation for a Club Council vote for funding the construction phase. In addition to the Building Committee, there is continued great work by a team of dedicated members to undertake fundraising for the Club’s redevelopment. Headed up by Michelle Smallman and Warick Redwood there are a number of initiatives, opportunities and activities proposed to seek various types of funding sources to assist with financial commitment required in undertaking a major project of this type. A redeveloped Club will not only benefit us all within the Club but will provide an iconic place within the Sunshine Beach community. I am fortunate in my role to be across all areas of the club and I am so pleased to see the great work my fellow Directors and their dedicated teams do across the board for this Club. I have great admiration to the time and effort that all our volunteers put into being patrol members and the massive work behind the scenes that is done by a few quiet achievers to ensure we have the appropriate gear and equipment to perform our duties on the beach week in week out.

The commitment by our Club Captain, trainers, assessors and patrol captains is nothing less than inspiring and is critical to the future of the Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. James Ross has some fantastic individuals and has built up our patrol numbers to ensure that volunteer lifesaving at Sunshine Beach is in a very good place for years to come and that Sunshine Beach continues to be a safe place to swim. This year again I was involved in the surf sports program as a team manager for the 14/15s team at a number of carnivals including the Aussies in Scarborough, WA. We have some very talented individuals in this age group and it was again present on how much our little club punches so much higher above its weight against those bigger clubs time after time. I want to thank our new Head Coach, Josh Minogue for bringing a new flavour of training, competiveness and professionalism to our surf sports program and congratulating him on a successful debut season at our Club. It is important acknowledge the benefits that our Surf Sports program provides to all our competitors and our Club in general. The self-discipline, commitment, time and effort put in to compete for our Club ensures they will be better lifesavers and valued members of our community well beyond their competitive lives. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the standing down of our former President Craig Law who up until his departure continued to work tirelessly across all aspects of the Club with an unbelievable attitude and a “just get it done” approach. Craig truly loves this club and has left a legacy of making sure we have a great place for our members and ensure the standard of volunteer lifesaving at Sunshine Beach remains second to none!

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 8

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE – Yvette McKinley

It seems unbelievable that another year has come and gone. 2017/18 has again been a highly successful and productive year for Sunshine Beach Surf Club in all areas of our club. It is with much pleasure that I present the financial statements of the Sunshine Beach Surf Club that are attached in this Annual Report for the year ending 30 April 2018. Our financial position has continued to strengthen while we continue to provide an excellent service to beach goers and strong programs throughout the club for our members. February 2018 was going to be the month to commence our significant redevelopment but as all members know that after very careful consideration it made most financial sense to delay our plans for another 12 months. Another full year of operating has strengthened our financial position as we look to now commence the major club renovations in February 2019. It is critical that we reinvest in our club venue to ensure an adequate and long term source of cash flow to the Surf Life Saving Club. The strong financial position which the Club now finds itself in has been a huge team effort. Congratulations to our Supporters Club Manager Tim Johnston and his team who continue to run a great club. The budget discipline continues in all departments from Surf Sports, Nippers, Lifesaving, and Youth and Cadet and every director should be congratulations for their adherence to their budgets and continuing to minimise costs and meet their fundraising targets. I thank you all for assisting me by working hard to manage our budget. Thank you to our largest sponsor the Supporter’s Club which has been pivotal in its funding of our Actives club. Our sponsorship of course runs beyond the Supporter’s club and it is essential to acknowledge and thank the many local businesses that continue to support our club financially through the donation of goods and services and financial aid. Sponsorship of our club ensures that we continue to maintain the essential community service of providing a patrolled beach. Financial highlights for the 2017/18 year include: Net Profit of the Supporter’s Club before

donations to the Surf Club was $919K

donations to the Surf Club was $919K Sufficient cash resources to fund the Surf

Club’s core business for at least the next 12 months (ensuring sufficient funds while the building renovation is undertaken).

Total net cost of funding Surf Club core activities including administration and surf lifesaving (The Beach) $200K

Net investment in our future lifesavers (Nippers, Youth and Cadet) $21K (including purchase of new gear and equipment)

Net investment in Surf Sports Activities (including specialised coaching and carnival costs) $100 K

A special thank you to club members who have continued to work hard to secure grants and donations for the club. These grants and donations are essential to ensuring that we have the best gear and equipment for Lifesaving, Surf Sports and Junior Activities. Grants and donations received for 2017/18. (Listed on page 42 in detail) 2017/18 has seen some significant staff changes. I would like to thank and wish our previous Lifesaving Administrator Terri Atkins all the best and welcome Michelle Burnett as the Lifesaving Manager. Michelle has certainly hit the ground running and I thank her for her great work to date. We also bid farewell to another long-term employee our book keeper, Deborah Scotney. Thank you again to Deb for all her hard work and commitment to the club and welcome to Karen Hocking who has quickly become an asset to our team. To all the Board Members, member and staff thank you and well done again for another hugely successful year. I look forward to working with you all in the coming year and thank you for your continued support as we face the challenges of the next 12 months.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 9

DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION – Michelle Smallman

Sunshine Beach SLSC has had another incredible year. I would like to extend a heartfelt thankyou to all patrolling members and our tireless volunteers across various areas of the club, whose contributions make our club GREAT. To my fellow board members, thank you for the endless hours you put into your positions. The effort you put in allows Sunshine Beach SLSC to continuously strengthen its position as a club, and to deliver a strong Surf Lifesaving, Surf Sports, Youth & Cadet and Junior Activities (Nippers) programme for our members. I would also like to acknowledge their commitment to managing a united club, with transparency, and unity of purpose in representing the club membership. I would also like to thank our support staff, especially Michelle Burnett, for keeping everything running smoothly. Michelle’s enthusiasm, professional attitude and knowledge of Surf Lifesaving has been a great addition to the club operations. In reflecting on the season 2017/18 club membership numbers have increased on previous seasons, as detailed below. It’s pleasing to see growth in our Active members under 18 categories, these members are fundamental to the continuing strength and future of our club. Our junior member numbers have also increased. Moving into 2018/19, on an administrative front, there will be some upgrades to our webpage, to allow for online payment of fees, levies. The website will offer a broader range of functionality and will become the central communication point for club administration. Keep your eye out for emails regarding implementation of these changes. 2018/19 will see many other changes to our club, as we begin our much anticipated club upgrade. I urge you all to support the club in this exciting step towards our future. During club closure we will continue to have Michelle B managing our Lifesaving office at a soon to be determined location. In closing, thank you to all those that make up Team Sunshine. My fellow board members, sub-committee members, Supporters Club committee and members, sponsors, coaches, club staff, active members, along with their families, and our nipper community that make up a great team; TEAM SUNSHINE. I will be stepping down from my position as Director of Administration, after completing my two year term and I feel very grateful to have had an opportunity to be a part of this team.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 10

LIFESAVING MANAGER – Michelle Burnett

I am pleased to present an update as the Lifesaving Manager of Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Inc for the year ended 30 April 2018.It gives me great pleasure to report the Club continues to go from strength to strength with excellence in the Active Patrolling area and also anoutstanding season in the competition arena. The modern Lifesaver today is faced with increased scrutiny by the community and relevant authorities. I am pleased to report that our membership, under strong guidance and leadership has met and exceeded these expectations.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON No lives lost in the patrolled area of our

beach. Another great result from our patrolling members

Australian DHL Lifesaver of the Year awarded to Scott Summers and Australian DHL Lifeguard of the year awarded to Max Pettigove

2 Australian Rescues of Month awarded on consecutive months to Sunshine Beach patrol Members Olivia Emanuel for the month of November and Lachlan Lansdown, John Reeves and team for December. These prestigious awards were presented in Canberra at Parliament House

Strong membership numbers and another great season by our Trainers with many new awards

Surf Sports excellence with 12 medals won during the Australian Open, Youth and Masters Australian Titles. Also strong representation in Queensland Teams.

Fantastic Fundraising efforts by Club Members

Formation of a Club History Group Our Communication to members is evolving.

A majority of members are now using various communication channels to engage and with this in mind we are currently upgrading our Club website and adding a payment portal, we are utilising email, social media platforms and also working on an app.

The Board of Directors have invested an enormous amount of time and energy on the Club’s future this year, in particular in the planning for the Club rebuild. Identifying goals and priorities, as well as measuring the clubs success against targets, while reflecting on a strong commitment to excellence in operational and management areas. Sunshine Beach SLSC is conscious of the need for a strategic plan that meets the needs of the community and its members. The Club is a valued emergency service operation and an icon of the Noosa Shire Coastline, allowing residents and visitors to swim safely on Sunshine Beach.

Fortunately, we have many generous individuals and corporate partners in our community who support and sponsor our club in many different ways, large and small. Without their help, it would be impossible to keep Sunshine Beach safe. Funds raised enable the Club to provide the equipment and training necessary for our Surf Lifesavers to maintain our core activity of beach patrols. Therefore, it is important that we are actively out in the community seeking opportunities to attract sponsorship dollars. Although money is tight in the corporate world, we have been indeed fortunate to secure support from many sources, and for that we are thankful. Firstly, I would like to thank our largest donor Sunshine Beach Supporters Club, our Licensed Club. Without Sunshine Beach Supporters Club and all the people who support it, our job would be almost impossible.

My personal thanks to an absolutely fantastic Management Committee who have devoted many, many hours of their time to steering our club this year. Also thanks to the Supporters Club Committee, Tim Johnson and his staff for their support and dedication throughout the season to myself and the Active Club Members.

DIRECTOR OF LIFE SAVING – James Ross

The first of the National recognitions were awarded at the start of season, with both Scott Summers and Max Pettigrove being handed in October well-deserved Lifesaver & Lifeguard of the Year respectively. Then in the month of November, Olivia assisted in an effort off Sunrise Beach that resulted in her being the recipient of the National Rescue of the Month. The Patrol 1 crew, the Lifeguard service and members of the public also helped out greatly on the day. Then, in the fading hours of Christmas Eve, Lachlan & John from Patrol 8 found themselves confronted by an unfortunate situation at A-Bay whilst on a routine roving patrol – not what they were expecting the day before Xmas !! With their own skill and determination and those of a WaveRunner also happening to be in the area at the time, what was almost guaranteed to be a multiple tragedy ended up with all four members of the public safely back on the beach. Great assistance was also delivered on the day from the rest of Patrol 8, off-duty lifesavers, the lifeguard service and LS 46 (the chopper) – a whole of team effort and another National Rescue of the Month in the bag ! Thanks to the fitness junkies for the Gym overhaul, with the addition of some new equipment including two treadmills. New lifesaving equipment included an ATV funded by the Norris Group, and government grants for an IRB motor (who said IRBs were dinosaurs??) and additional rescue equipment such as boards and tubes. Now looking forward to the next season in which hopefully a jet ski will be trialled for patrol purposes and perhaps a bit of reshuffling required to allow for the club rebuild.

Season 2017/18, as many before, was a successful one as far as our number one kpi is : zero casualties between the flags. Not that this meant we weren’t involved elsewhere, but at least the Mission Accomplished banner can be unfurled for our bit. From Nationally-recognized Lifesaving awards, an additional 20 or so new patrolling members, to replaced & revamped equipment, Sunshine Beach Lifesaving arguably ended up in better shape than when the season started – a nice standard to meet, as is usually done every year. The season started off with Scott at the helm and myself as his deputy. But due to a number of life’s twist & turns, ended up with me soon after scrambling over to grab the lifesaving tiller & Scott subsequently climbing the yardarm to instil order from a higher place. It was almost seamless, and due in no small part to the efforts of the entire Lifesaving Group – trainers, first aid, equipment officers and Patrol Captains. Everyone just carried on doing what they do best. Also thanks to the MC, admin staff and of course, all our patrolling members for making the season run as well as it did. As I pointed out to one group of “graduating” bronzies, I cannot think of any other volunteer movement, let alone a paid one, where there is such difference in age, gender and standing across the membership group. Did you know that we have a 60-year age spread across our patrolling group? This diversity is unique and is a privilege to be a part of.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 17

A bit over Twelve months ago I was asked by then Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Club President Craig Law if I was interested in taking on the role of JAC here at Sunshine Beach Surf Club. Immediately I was overwhelmed with fear, I thought if I take on this position and not do it well then many years of hard work and tradition could be lost. But I knew there was a great committee already in place to help me in this role. Nippers, especially Sunshine Beach nippers is something that I believe in and believe that every child living on the Sunshine Coast should do nippers. So I took on the role and I can say that I am glad that I did. Once again I was fortunate to have a great committee behind me who I would like to thank very much. Myself, and everyone else very much appreciates all the work done by these dedicated volunteers. I will not name individuals but some parents have gone above and beyond with the generosity of their time which I thank very much as without them the nipper program at Sunshine Beach S.L.S.C could not operate. One of the first jobs was to try and increase the number of nippers for the 2017/18 season, so we had a Nipper information Stall at the St Thomas Moore Primary School Fete as this event has a large number of nipper age children from this area attend, Radio advertising, Newspaper articles and some well-placed corflute’s around town worked and the 2017/18 season at Sunshine Beach S.L.S.C had 175 registered Nippers for the U7-U14 age groups. Sunshine Coast Branch reports that this was a 14% increase in Junior Activities membership. Nipper Sunday's turned the beach into a sea of colour with age groups spread across the beach taking over their favorite spots. All the Age Managers should be congratulated for their efforts during the season. With some willing and ready before the season started and some getting a late

call to help where they all did a stellar job. During the Branch audit one area that was singled out was our Water Safety. The following is a quote from the audit: "It was great to see the club has a significant number of Water Safety to assist with Junior Activities. Throughout my visit I noticed that the Water Safety were very aware of both the conditions and abilities of the nippers providing support to less confident nippers where required". A great job done by our Water Safety Coordinator and all who help with water safety. It was nice to start the season with some new equipment for the nippers, during the off season "Infront Surf Craft" custom made 10 new red boogie boards for the U7's to U8's but I think every nipper from all age groups may have caught a wave or 2 on these nice new boards. We also purchased some new Infront foam boards and hand-picked some second hand fiberglass boards. This year the club welcomed new Head Coach Josh Minogue along with his assistants Zion Pettigrove and Brock Redwood and Beach Coach Pauline Gleeson. The new coaching team have had a great 2017/18 season with the Sunshine Beach Nippers performing above and beyond expectations at all carnivals attended. This season the U9's and U10's were provided with a board coaching session which shall continue in the 2018/19 season. We finished with this season's last club Sunday at the Coolum Aqua Fun Park it was a Family Fun Day and BBQ. End of Season Presentations returned to the J and wrapped up the 2017/18 season. In wrapping up I would like to thank all involved in the running of Nippers and especially the Nippers because also without you all turning up ready to go early on a Sunday morning Sunshine Beach Nippers would not be what it is and making it the BEST!

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 18

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 19

DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS On reflection, the 2017-18 has been hugely successful for the Surf Sports section of our Club. Another change on the Coaching front during the off season, potentially could have been disruptive to our competitors. However, with a new Head Coach combined with a blend of familiar and fresh faces within the coaching team has been an outstanding success. Be it in Pool Rescue, in the Surf, on the Beach or Champion Life Saver and Patrol Comp, even the Coolangatta Gold, our competitors from Under 8’s through to Masters have worn the Club cap with great distinction. Some amazing results in all disciplines demonstrates the depth and breadth of talent that we have at Sunshine Beach SLSC. Culminating at the Australian Titles held at Scarborough, Western Australia where we had an array of medals won from U14’s through to Masters. Sunshine Beach SLSC has a very proud history in Surf Sports, dating back well before many of the current members and this demonstrated by the honour board and the photos placed around the Club. The Nipper program at Sunshine has been growing from strength to strength over a number of years. This has been the result of the time and efforts of numerous parents and care givers over a long period of time. Many of the Nippers over the journey have transferred their skills into the competitive side, that being Surf Sports. The benefit from this has been that the Surf Sports program has also continued to grow, develop and an amazing culture has formed within our program. Starting with the U8-10’s that are bursting out of their skins to get to board/ skills development training through to their various “non-competitive” carnivals. Not sure if these guys understand the term “non-competitive,” they do however know how to have fun. If only we learn to harness all that energy. Credit to Tania Lewis, who once again has been sensational in her role as the U8-10 Team Manager. Tania is incredibly passionate and enthusiastic and with the assistance of the Age Managers, somehow manages to keep everything under control. The U11-13’s continue to get stronger. There are so many talented young athletes amongst this group of competitors. The learning curve continues on the upward trajectory, with greater experience gained from training and carnival competition.

The results at State and Branch were very solid with some exceptional racing. My sincerest thanks to Jacquie Otto in her role as Team Manager for this age group and including the U14’s throughout the season. Jacquie was incredibly vigilant throughout the season and her co-ordination and communication to such a large group was fantastic. The U14’s not only had their first taste of Aussie Titles, joining the U15’s over at Scarborough in W.A. throughout the season many of the U14’s raced up an age to compete at the Oceans 38 series. This group had a hugely successful season, their work ethic at training has been flowing through to their racing. The name Sunshine Beach was called out numerous times over the weekend that was their Australian Titles, with one of the highlights being five U14 girls in the Iron woman final, where Abbie Tolano won a Bronze medal. Whilst in the U15 female Iron, Sarah Perkins had a fantastic race to win herself a Silver medal. However, it was the U14 and 15 girls combining to win Gold in the Surf Teams that brought the biggest cheers. Congrats to Francesca McKinley, Jade Hooper, Abbie Tolano and Grace Otto on a sensational swim. The boys and girls should all be extremely proud of their efforts. The following day Amelia Ross took out Gold and Jade Hooper won bronze in the Champion Life Saver, simply sensational. Thanks to Bryan O’Conner for his Team Managing throughout the season, a big job that was done very well. The U17’s stepped up again with not only a strong season in their own age group but often racing with the Opens. Racing local carnivals, as well as the Oceans 38 and Oceans 6. One of the highlights was the U17 girls board team racing up in the Oceans 6, Opens to take out 2nd place in big conditions at Surfers Paradise. Whilst the boys put together an Opens team in the Taplin at Coolum’s Ocean 6 and were right in the mix amongst the carnage until the final turning can. The season culminated at the Australian Titles, with some mixed results. Not everyone achieved what they would have wished for, but not through lack of effort and that is the nature of the sport. Olivia Emanuel won a silver medal in the U17 Surf Ski, a fantastic result in a strong field and greatly deserved. Charli McKinley and Ruby Nolan won Gold in the U17 Board Rescue an event they have been chasing for some time.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 20

DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS Cont. Talisa Brady, Olivia Emanuel and Ruby Nolan also won Gold in the U17 Taplin Relay, which helped demonstrate the spread of talent amongst this team. The same three girls combined to win Silver in the Board relay. Charli joined the girls to win a Bronze medal in the U17 Surf Teams. As Team Manager, Dan Moore has once again done a great job throughout the season. Dan is highly respected amongst the competitors and parents as he brings a wealth of experience and a calm presence to the role. Our Masters crew maybe light in numbers, but they certainly know how to compete, with some fantastic results at both Branch and State. With Gerrard Crow Team Managing and competing, the team made their presence felt throughout the season. Tania Lewis continues to be amongst the medals along with Gerrard, Jason Hooper, Chris Price, Alison Johnston along with a new comer that knows a bit about racing, Simon Thompson. Jason went on to medal twice at the Australian Titles. Results are listed below. This season also saw another strong representation at Branch level. Once again the Sunshine Coast Branch Team was victorious, making it 10 years in a row. The following Sunshine Beach competitors were an integral part of that team. Under 13 - Scarlett Olver, Tommy Price, Matt Lewis Under 14 – Abbie Tolano, Francesca McKinley, Killan Carrel Under 15 – Hamish Farquharson Selby, Sam O’Çonnor Under 17 – Ruby Nolan, Zac Bromage Sunshine also provided two Coaches in Pauline Gleeson and Brock Redwood along with Craig Law as Team Manager. Abbie Tolano, Francesca McKinley and Ruby Nolan also represented their respective Queensland State Teams, which is a great honour. Obviously our competitors have been putting in the time and effort to achieve these results over this past season and congratulations to them. There is always room to improve and learn from every race or how each competitor approach’s their season, be it training, attitude or desire.

Thankfully for our athletes we have a very well balanced team of Coaches to help guide and educate. This season we installed a new Head Coach in Josh Minogue. Josh has a wealth of experience as a competitor at the highest level, but more importantly he has a vested interest in each competitor. He has demonstrated the ability to communicate with competitors of all ages as well as parents. Josh’s love for the sport is evident at training and especially at carnivals. In a short period of time Josh has earned the respect of the competitors, fellow coaches and parents. In coaching years, Josh is quite young, but he is already forging his own philosophies and coaching style. It is an exciting time to be part of the Sunshine Beach Team. Pauline Gleeson has continued in her role as Beach Coach. With some of our senior and most successful beachies of recent times moving on at the end of last season, Pauline has been rebuilding the Beach squad. The signs are very positive for the future with a strong core group young, talented competitors pushing through. Paul Gilmore has returned as our Ski Coach and his influence was evidential from the beginning. As the season progressed, the results started to follow. This season the number of competitors on the skis has increased and will continue to grow next season. Lisa Worthington stepped into the role of overseeing the Champion Life Saver and Patrol Competition training and competition. With assistance from Jo Redwood our young competitors through to the Masters had an exceptional season. When mapping out the training and competition schedule for the season, it was obvious that Head Coach Josh would need some assistance. Josh was adamant that we look from within the Club before advertising externally for assistant coaches. We didn’t have to dig too deep to uncover a couple of gems. Brock Redwood had a very busy season, firstly he took on the role of Pool Rescue with a great deal of success. Brock also assisted with many of the board sessions with the junior and senior competitors.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 21

DIRECTOR OF SURF SPORTS Cont. shown immediate and no doubt long term benefits for these youngsters. Zion Pettigrove also joined the coaching team and he has been a valuable asset with his insight and ability to share his skills and knowledge. Assisting Josh with Board and Iron training as well as carnivals, Zion has been a great addition. The age group Team Managers as previously mentioned have been an invaluable asset throughout the season. We must also thank Craig Law who embraces the Team Manager role of the Pool Rescue Team with gusto. Give the man a uniform, a van and control of the music and he is in his element. The time and effort put in to getting a team and equipment across to Western Australia was immense and an integral part of making it all happen and a little more affordable was the fundraising.

The work put in to organise and facilitating the fundraising by everyone was greatly appreciated, with a special thanks to Jim and Heidi Selby for being so proactive. Thank you to all the Age Managers for their exceptional work over the duration of the season. It can sometimes feel like your herding cats, but it is also a very rewarding job. To all of the Water Safety, Officials and parents that helped set up, pack up and generally help out, thank you. The support from the Management Committee for the Surf Sports program is greatly appreciated. Thanks to Michelle Burnett (Administration) for all of your assistance throughout the season. Finally, thank you to each and every member of the Surf Sports Committee. An incredibly passionate and dedicated group that are a pleasure to work with.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 23

I said it multiple times throughout the year but what an incredible season from Sunshine Beach SLSC. For a rookie coach I honestly believe I couldn't have been luckier in my first year to work with such an incredibly committed and amazing group of athletes; families that not only made me feel welcome at the club but part of the club; a membership that was enthusiastic and believed in what we are trying to create here; coaches that shared a vision and passion and a club that had set lofty goals. And for all those things I will always be grateful. In a season that almost spanned 11 months there was plenty of highs, which should be celebrated and we had our share of lows, which we learnt and grew from. The club welcomed Brock Redwood into an assistant coaching role and he excelled with both u8-u10s and Pool Rescue competitors, where he had success at all levels including 15 medals at the Queensland Championships and 2 medals at the Australian Championships in Adelaide. Zion Pettigrove also made his mark on the club; thanks to his deep knowledge of surf sports, his level head and encouragement, Zion was an important part of the clubs success. Lisa Worthington ensured the clubs rich history in Surf Rescue events grew. Lisa and her athletes both competed and held themselves at the highest standard, enjoying success at the Branch, State and Australian Championships; capped off with Amelia Ross and Jade Hooper finishing first and second at the Aussies in WA. Lisa's drive and commitment to the club and its competitors should be celebrated. Once again Pauline Gleeson bought her signature passion to the sand for the beach competitors and continually got the best out of them, found diamonds in the rough and taught them lessons far more important than just sprinting and flags. And the club welcomed back Paul Gilmour to coach our ski program; his knowledge both technically and in the surf is second to none, the club is lucky to have him guiding our ever-growing ski squad and the future is bright. But it takes far more than just coaches to run a surf sports program; without the club’s team managers, Dan Moore, Bryan O'Connor and Jacquie Otto none of this would be possible, you go above and beyond, so thank you. To the club’s management board, members, age managers, water safety, officials, helpers, drivers, tent carriers and parents; you've supported both myself and the athletes throughout a long and tough season and I cannot understate how appreciative I am! I set out at the start of the season to create a program that allowed the clubs members to chase their goals, grow as athletes and people and most importantly have fun; and I believe this season has been a success. It’s been a success not because of the medals won, the races lead or our team’s achievements; this season has been a success because we have developed good athletes and better people. The way everyone from Sunshine Beach has raced, carried themselves, risen to a challenge, overcome adversity and looked out for each other, gives me far more pride than Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. And of-course I am not solely responsible for this success, I've simply ridden off the hard work of the coaches that have come before me over the last decade; but even more importantly without the hard work, commitment and pure effort of the athletes themselves there would be no success. So finally to those who're most important, the athletes who turn up when training is early, hard, cold, windy and when its beautiful, thank you, I am genuinely lucky to be your coach.

2017/2018 ANNUAL REPORT 37

Despite the postponement of the much awaited renovation and subsequent loss of function income for February to April, the Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving Supporters Club enjoyed a successful year of trade with above best practice levels of profit and service.

The 2017-18 year also saw the building sub-committee put its shoulder to the wheel and attend to the myriad of details that are encountered in preparing for such a project. We thank all who have given of their time to assist with this evolving project and we trust that they will take great pride when the final ‘product’ is unveiled.

Our members should be justifiably excited in anticipating a new club to enjoy for many years to come.

Despite 2 ½ months of no weddings/functions due to our expectation of not being open for business due to the renovation, Bar Sales in 2017-18 were only down from $2.140 Million to $2.137 million or $3,000 based on a very solid first half trading result and a strong Christmas

Similarly our restaurant sales increased from last year and reached $2.744 million (ex gst) which is testament to the popularity of the food offered here at Sunshine when considering the loss of some 700-800 wedding guest meals at the end of the financial year. Darren Sandilands and his team have now been here for over seven years and have set a benchmark for food variety, production and taste that gives us all a source of great pride. The Board take the opportunity to again thank Darren and his team for another year of excellence in preparing and presenting large volumes of meals for our eager members and guests.

Market conditions and community perceptions of gaming over the past twelve months have seen some contraction in pokie revenue for clubs here on the Sunshine Coast, and with no wedding guests in March/April to boost our gaming turnover, our net gaming contribution decreased by 10% $360,000. We look forward to increasing our machines on the floor from 15 to 20 in the new building.

SUPPORTERS CLUB COMMITTEE REPORT

Gaming machines aren’t everyone’s “cup of tea” but at 40% of our overall profit that is passed to our Life Saving Club, they are a vital income generator to ensure our wonderful volunteers are resourced effectively to do their job on the beach.

In the competitive functions/weddings space, our club continues to excel and our function numbers until having to cancel bookings during our “expected” closing months were at record levels. Subsequently we pursued two highly successful and profitable Summer Sessions in November and February featuring bands such as CUB Sport, Middle Kids and Alex Lahey to help fill the void.

Total Association net income exceeded $3 million (ex gst) for the third year in succession, and committee was pleased that through management control measures we saw total expenses actually decrease by 1.4% over the previous financial year – a superb effort by all.

Therefore, we are pleased to advise that our 2017-18 operating profit after depreciation exceeded 900K for the second year in succession at $918,878.27 and before depreciation sat at $966,295.23 which based on club comparative KPI’s puts Sunshine at the top of the tree based on “profit on turnover” in South East Queensland.

The Supporters Club is very fortunate to have a group of Directors with great experience and a calm guiding approach to direct the club to its ongoing successes, in particular we are indebted to President Warick Redwood, Vice President Johnny Gooderham, Secretary Andrew Fraser, Treasurer Peter Brewer and Ordinary Member Kim Grove for bringing their business acumen to the table.

The club and Board also recognise that our staff play a role in the performance of the club and whilst passing on our sincere gratitude to all who work at the Surf Club wish to thank Club Manager Tim Johnson, Functions Manager Erin Glackin (part year), Operations Manager Craig Spencer, and Accounts Clerk Denise Warner-Rabsch for their efforts in making Sunshine Beach Surf Club a friendly and memorable place to come for a drink, meal, function or gaming experience.
