Dear Parent/Carer,

As another successful year ends, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you. Thank you to the Governors for the work you do behind the scenes to support our school. Thank you to all staff for your commitment to our students in and beyond the classroom. The quality of educational experience that our students enjoy is because of your hard work and willingness to go the extra mile. Thank you too parents and carers, for the support that you give to your daughters and the school. Particular thanks to those of you involved in FOSA for the events you organise throughout the year for our school community. In addition, thank you to our wonderful students for the contribution you make and the support you provide to staff and to each other.

We are fortunate to have so many amazing students at St. Anne’s and I hope you enjoying reading about some of the activities they have taken part in this Term.

The Gospel Choir has gone from strength to strength this year and one of the highlights of the year was when they were given the opportunity to perform with The Kingdom Choir at the Royal Albert Hall recently.

The GCSE and A Level examination season has now finished and we are looking forward to celebrating the results with students in August. Fingers crossed that they receive the results expected. They certainly worked incredibly hard with many students attending Saturday school regularly throughout the year.

Several members of staff will be leaving us this summer and I would like to thank them all for their hard work during their time at St. Anne’s and for the contribution they have made to the life of our school. We will be saying goodbye to: Mrs Turner, who is retiring after 23 years of service, Mr Patel, Ms Labeach Williams, Ms Smith, Mrs Axetorn, Dr Cwizewicz, Mr Boatey, Miss Todorova, Miss Akpeki and Miss Ogden.

We wish Mrs Lysandrou, Teacher of English, all the very best as she starts her Maternity Leave on Friday 19th July 2019 and we would like to congratulate Miss Moon, Subject Leader for Drama, on the recent birth of her daughter.

Miss Khan, Teacher of Science, will be getting married during the Summer break so congratulations to her and our very best wishes for a long and happy marriage.

Finally, I wish you all a very happy summer holiday and look forward to welcoming staff and students back at the start of the Autumn Term. The New Year 7 students start on Tuesday 3rd September 2019 and we are really looking forward to welcoming them into our school community. All other year groups return on Wednesday 4th September 2019.

God bless you and your families. Mrs Gilling, Headteacher

We joined the Catholic Children’s Society’s Good Samaritan Mass at Westminster Cathedral on Wednesday 10th July. This Mass was aimed at secondary school students who have been supporting the crisis fund for CCS.

St Anne’s is one of the schools in the Diocese which supports this crisis fund each year through our Lenten almsgiving.

CCS raises awareness of extreme poverty, financial hardship, mental and physical health impediments and other problems impacting on the stability of the families.

The Catholic Life of the School

St. Anne’s students attended the Adoremus Mass on 18th June in Westminster Cathedral to mark the end of the Eucharistic Journey we have been celebrating.

It was celebrated by Cardinal Nichols on Corpus Christi for all Catholic schools which helped us grow in our understanding of the Eucharist. Our students contributed to the Liturgy for this Mass.

Good Samaritan Mass Lent Fundraiser for the Crisis Fund

During this Lent, as usual, we observed our Lenten promises to pray, fast and give alms to others by having a simple lunch and donating £1 in support of the ‘Crisis Fund’.

We raised £1,280.00 for this project. As a school we have used this crisis fund to support some of our own students and their families.

We held our 3rd party of the year on Sunday 12th May. Full of energy and enthusiasm, our Year 10 student hosts arrived early, set up the hall and helped prepare the food. Not only did they enjoy serving our guests but so many of them commented on how much they enjoyed chatting to the people on their allocated table.

“It was a great experience! At first I thought I would be shy and awkward but the conversation flowed and they had interesting stories and it made me realise that by talking to them they were brightening up my day and I was brightening up their’s. Loved the experience!

Entertainment was provided by brave Year 8 students who played the piano and violin beautifully. A special thank you to Claudia Montella 8L, Lois Mahon-Stapelton 8L, Hannah McGrath 8F, Grace Corcoran 8T.

I’d like to thank staff and students who have supported and worked hard on this event all year. Mrs Gilling thanked our Year 10 students for their contribution to the local community and, much to the girls’ delight, gave them ice lollies and certificates! We look forward to seeing our regular guests and welcoming new ones to our first tea party next year on Sunday 6th October.

Miss Pugh, Assistant Headteacher

The Catholic Life of the SchoolTea Parties for the Elderly

“Many thanks for all the arrangements which contributed to making our tea on Sunday so enjoyable.

I know I speak for the group which was sitting near me but all the hard work [from preparing and serving the food, to having the confidence to play the concertina or piano and more] was much appreciated. We hope that the girls felt that their efforts went down well. So, thanks again.”

If students are to achieve their potential, good attendance and punctuality are critical. The link between attendance and achievement is well documented.

At St Anne’s we want all of our students to achieve the very best examination results that they can and poor attendance will have a significant impact on student achievement.

Students with irregular attendance:

L Get behind with their work; L Lose the thread of the topics being taught; L Become demotivated on their return to school; L Lose friendships; L Miss out on important career and guidance input; L Miss out on extra-curricular opportunities; L Are less likely to feel part of the school.

90% attendance is equivalent to one day of absence every fortnight. Over an academic year this amounts to four weeks of absence (one hundred lessons missed!). Mrs Sanders

Deputy Headteacher

Why Attendance and Punctuality Matter

Any results not collected will be posted first class on the day to the address registered on our database.

GCE A Level Emergency Review of Marking - Mrs Hunt will be available in the Exams Office on Friday 16th August from 10.00 to 11.00am only.

Collection of Exam Certificates - There are a number of GCE and GCSE certificates that remain uncollected, some dating back to 2012. These are available for collection from the Exams Office from 9.00am to 4.00pm each school day. If you have a family member who attended St Anne’s previously please ask them if they have collected their Exam Certificates for GCE & GCSE.

Please note that exam certificates for the Summer 2019 exams will not be available until November 2019.

Good Luck Everyone! Mrs Hunt, Exams Officer

Our wonderful Headteacher, Mrs Gilling, was recently a very deserving nominee for the TES Headteacher of the Year Award. The event was held at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 21st June 2019.

Well done, Mrs Gilling!

A Farewell Message from Mrs TurnerAfter 23 happy years at St Anne’s School, and quite a number of those as Assistant Head Teacher responsible for the Sixth Form, I have reached the end of my teaching career and am looking forward to a new chapter in my life – retirement.

I have enjoyed lots of memorable occasions here and worked with the most amazing, supportive, progressive Head Teacher, Mrs Gilling, who has become a very dear friend to me.

All the staff in this school work so hard for the girls, to ensure they have the very best education. They put many unseen hours into a huge range of extra-curricular opportunities which enrich the life experiences of our students. Over the years, I have seen our girls leave the Sixth Form as confident young women, well equipped and ready to make a valuable contribution to society. I will miss the girls and staff very much, but am really looking forward to having the time to enjoy a whole new world of adventures.

St. Anne’s has gone from strength to strength, and I am proud to say that I have played some small part in the school’s success. Thank you, St. Anne’s, for giving me so many happy memories.

Jillian TurnerAssistant Head Teacher 16-19

Women’s World Cup Fun!

To mark the start of the World Cup, the girls were able to wear football shirts to school. In PE lessons, whilst the weather prevented playing outside, several classes combined in the hall for rapid 4v4 games. The girls enjoyed supporting one another, showed competitive spirit and reflected on the importance of good sportsmanship and teamwork.

School Fund Target for 2019-2020: £60,000Governors really need your voluntary contribution to be able to pay the bills for essential roofing and heating work on both sites. The Government only gives us 90% (nine-tenths) funding for this.

A big ‘thank you’ to all families who have paid in part or full. The suggested minimum contribution is £96 per family (not per student). Please pay as much as you can as soon as you can. You can pay in instalments if easier for you - and payments can be made by:

Travelling to and from SchoolEnfield gets very busy in the afternoons when school finishes. Senior staff support students at well used bus stops. However, if you live near any of the train stations on the route in and out of Enfield Town your daughter can travel to school for 85p and go home in the afternoon for 75p.

Mobile PhonesPlease take note of the new mobile phone policy which

comes into effect from September 2019.

Students are not permitted to use a mobile phone during school hours or whilst they are on school premises – either inside the school building or in any outside area on school grounds.

Students must not be using their mobile phones as they approach the school entrance and all mobile phones should be switched off as soon as students arrive at the school gate and before entering the school grounds.

If a student is found to be using a mobile phone at any time it will be confiscated immediately and will only be returned once a parent has come into school to collect it.

Students will receive a Senior Management Detention on a first offence but will received a Fixed Term Exclusion from school if they are found to be using it again.

There may be times, however, when a teacher might allow students to use their phones for educational purposes. This is the only time when phones can be turned on and used in school.

Mobile phones must be turned off and kept in the zip pocket of a student’s blazer.

Students must always take responsibility for their own possessions which includes not leaving their blazers unattended.

The school does not have time and will not spend time looking for lost phones.

getting online?

Are you using PayPoint in a shop because of difficulties in going online?

Punctuality is a life skill that everyone needs to learn. However, some Key Stage 3 girls at St Anne’s have taken this to a new level! Here are some genuine explanations for lateness that students have during the Summer Term.

“I live far away” “Bus driver wouldn’t let anyone on the bus”

“Disturbing traffic”“Lost keys, stuck inside house”

“Phone didn’t charge”“Money stuck in Tesco Machine”

“Dropped my brother”“Don’t know”

“I moved houses”“My skirt”

“Waiting for traffic light”

Mrs Franklin, Attendance & Welfare Officer - Lower Site

Please ensure that all items of your daughter’s clothing items are clearly labelled with her name.

There are approximately 900 students in the school all wearing the same uniform! It is disheartening to see the number of garments that are handed in and never claimed. Items of clothing that have names marked in them are always returned to the students.

Lost property goes on display at the end of each Term.

I’m Late! I’m Late!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award Twenty six Year 10 students completed the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award over the weekend of 6th-7th July. Four groups set off from Chingford Station and navigated routes that they had plotted to take them into Epping Forest where they spent the night.

The girls had a great time discovering how close they live to the natural world and enjoyed a weekend out in the open air, away from the comforts and phones of a normal weekend at home. All the girls had to carry a rucksack with their tents, sleeping bags, food

and equipment and by the end of the weekend had discovered hitherto unknown reserves of inner strength and determination. They also discovered whole new levels of moaning and grumbling.

Thankfully, any discomfort and cynicism was outshone by the enthusiasm, camaraderie and dry wit on show and all the groups were very happy with what they achieved, or at least they can look back happily after their backs and shoulders stop aching! Special thanks to Miss Cowley, Miss Ganley and Miss Wells for all their help.

Year 5 Taster DayWe recently welcomed some Year 5 students to our school so that they could get a feel for what secondary school is like. In Textiles students used resources to make colour fast crayon designs of fruit on handkerchiefs to take home.

We were overjoyed to receive a phone call in February from Karen Gibson, inviting us to perform with The Kingdom Choir on their ‘Stand by Me’ UK Tour. And what an amazing location too, the Royal Albert Hall for their London Concert on 19th May (a special date – a year on from the Royal Wedding when they gave a stunning performance to a global TV audience of 1.9 billion). After weeks of rehearsals and admin tasks, the day arrived and 60 students and 5 staff made their way to the Royal Albert Hall for the afternoon sound checks.

We had the pleasure of watching The Kingdom Choir during their sound check, which really set the tone for the evening. Looking around, the empty hall gave us all goosebumps and it’s safe to say the adrenaline started kicking in. The Gospel Choir joined them on stage and rehearsed the joint song You’re the Voice, immediately showcasing their voices and the choreography learnt. We then rehearsed our songs and the girls left us all in awe of what they would soon be delivering.

Backstage, we had some time to talk with some of The Kingdom Choir Members whilst they were getting ready in Hair and Make Up. We spend some precious moments with Karen Gibson who holds St. Anne’s very close to her heart. We brought along a small gift for her which she opened with joy – giving her a St. Anne’s Gospel Choir Hoodie. We also had a special moment with our Conductor, Marsha Morrison, and after words of faith, praise and encouragement, we also presented her with a St. Anne’s Gospel Choir Hoodie. She too opened her present with joy and happy tears.

Show Time… and what a show it was!! The Kingdom Choir put on an amazing concert to a sold out Royal Albert Hall and performed half of their set before Karen introduced us. She spoke about her love of working with young people and choirs that she has led. She spoke passionately about our girls, the special school that is St. Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls and invited us onto the stage. St. Anne’s Gospel Choir wowed the audience with two choir favourites, Swing Low Sweet Chariot and Total Praise. As always our soloists were outstanding and a special mention and thank you must go to Ketsia Tchangou, Salem Tshibambe and Precious Liwala.

We are grateful for the reactions, applause and standing ovations received from the audience. The opportunity to perform at such a prestigious venue and with Karen Gibson and The Kingdom Choir was once in a lifetime and an evening full of ‘Love, Hope & Inspiration’. Comments and feedback on Social Media after the concert kept flooding in and below are a couple of our favourites:

“The girls were just sublime…you all sang from a place of beauty, truth and strength…keep it up!” @AkuaBAkua“Wonderful performance by the Girls’ Gospel Choir from St. Anne’s at Royal Albert Hall with The Kingdom Choir last night. Amazingly talented youngsters & so great to see music being allowed to flourish in schools.” @Mellie_Bean_

Big thanks to Mrs Gilling, Miss Pugh, Mrs Jones and Mrs Suarez, School Governor, for joining the choir on the day, and to the Staff, Parents and fans of the St. Anne’s Gospel Choir who came and supported us on the night. It truly was a magical evening and one that will remain in our memories for a long time. Thanks again to Ms Karen Gibson for making it all possible. Thank you and well done to all choir members. Your commitment and hard work at every performance is greatly appreciated. A special thought for our older choir members who are moving on – we wish you all the best for your results. Welcoming The One Show to the Lower Site The Gospel Choir are getting noticed more and more for their talent and sound, and opportunities keep coming in. This one in particular was great and fun to be a part of. On Monday 24th June we received a phone call from editors at BBC1’s The One Show. They were putting together a feature on Stormzy’s journey ahead of his headlining performance at Glastonbury and they were hoping we’d be able to get involved and sing Blinded by your Grace for it. We agreed and within 4 hours they were with us at Rehearsal. The girls rose to the challenge and performed the song beautifully. It was a fantastic experience and we’re grateful to have been invited to be a part of the feature. It was aired on Friday 28 June - if you missed it, you still have some time to catch it on iPlayer.

Park Life Arts Weekend

On Saturday 13th July we took part in the Choir Choir Choir afternoon of Broomfield Park’s Park Life Arts Weekend, organised by the Friends of Broomfield Park. It was an afternoon filled with talented singers and we joined two other choirs to sing for families and friends. It was a great opportunity to see other choir perform. Well done to Enfield Community Choir and R Voices. If any parents/carers are interested in joining a choir - get in touch with either of these. Thank you to those who came and supported us and celebrated the joys of singing in the open air.

Friends of St Anne’s - FOSAA Message from the Chair

Hello! It’s the end of another busy year for FOSA and we’d like to thank you all for your continued support. We’ve hosted discos, our Christmas Bazaar, hired Alexandra Palace Ice Skating Rink for an evening and of course held the annual KS3 School Sleepover, all of which have been great fun and have helped to raise funds for the school.

We were pleased to donate £10,500 to the school to be spent on New Water Fountains, Football Goals, Picnic Benches for the Sixth Form, Library Books and School Council and we know that items have been ordered for our students to benefit from next academic year. Contributions were also made to the recent Year 11 Prom and Year 13 Leavers’ BBQ. This was possible with your help, so thank you.

We had a fantastic evening at our annual Sleepover in June, with 80 Key Stage 3 students and the Head Girl Team. Karaoke went on way past midnight, then we had a little disco before we decided on what film to watch for the night (it was 1.30am at this point). Little sleep was had by all but there was lots of fun, tons of memories made and the staff lived to tell the tale on Monday morning! Thank you to Mrs Turner and Miss Wells.

Thanks to Miss Sehested and the Numeracy Ambassadors for organising such a fun day on National Numeracy Day and for choosing FOSA as one of their charities to fundraise for. Thank you for your donation of £283.83 – it is much appreciated.

There are some simple ways you can support us: please use EasyFundraising when you are shopping online as a percentage will be donated to FOSA. We’ve raised £886.40 since signing up with just 90 supporters. Imagine how much we could raise if we were ALL shopping through this site?

You can also donate whilst shopping at Amazon! Visit www.smile.amazon.co.uk (add this to your Favourites) every time you go on Amazon and choose ‘Friends Of St. Anne’s School Enfield (Fosa)’ as your nominated charity. They will make a donation to St. Anne’s every time you make a qualifying purchase at the ‘smile’ address.

Another Busy Term in FoodYear 7s have made coleslaw, pancakes, sweet muffins, savoury muffins and Chow Mein.

Year 8s worked on the ‘Carbohydrate’ section of The Eatwell Guide, have made bread rolls using locally produced flour from Wright’s flour Mill in Enfield. Macaroni cheese, pasta and sauce, lasagne, pizza and beautiful foccacia bread, using locally sourced rosemary (from my garden), which they kneaded for ten minutes whilst enjoying the sounds of Pavarotti.

Year 9s worked mostly on a multicultural theme, have made vegetable curry, spaghetti bolognese, chilli con carne and a stir fry. I’m not sure if they all enjoyed the lesson where they had to churn their own butter by vigorously shaking double cream for half an hour! They then used this butter to make their own buttermilk scones, finishing the year with triple chocolate muffins.

Year 10s have had practicals based around all aspects of their GCSE course and have also assisted in baking for various school events. Their skills have greatly improved.

Year 11s have worked really hard towards their GCSE work. They have cooked lobster, octopus, crabs, mussels, sushi, tilapia and a variety of vegan foods including fantastic vegan meringue, using Aquafaba (drained chickpea water), which Mary Berry would be proud of. They left with motivational food quotes on wooden spoons as a farewell gift.

I also enjoyed working with our younger visitors when Year 5s came to visit for the day and prepared colourful fruit kebabs and looked at their place on ‘The Eatwell Guide’.

And finally, last month we took part in a competition to promote ‘National Healthy Eating Week’ with other local schools, and had the excellent opportunity to work alongside KS5 catering students (as their mentors) at Newham College. Students had the opportunity to work in an industrial environment and produce dishes according to a brief set by The Chef. A proud moment when Michelle Mintah 9A and Radhika Parkar 9M won!

All ten girls that took part enjoyed ‘Hot Chocolate with Mrs Gilling’ as a reward and had an opportunity to discuss their experiences. These girls are all part of next year’s new GCSE students, so I will expect great things of them.

It has been a very busy and exciting term in the Textiles department. Year 8 students have been working hard creating Tote Bags with a focus on producing environmentally friendly bags. They have developed tie-dye skills, learned how to sew designs onto fabric using appliqué techniques, and improved their ability to use the sewing machine. The girls have produced some great bags, very impressive and creative, and they are to be congratulated on their hard work and creative efforts.

Here are some quotes from the students:

“I really like Textiles this term because we learnt lots of different things on sewing machines and how to spice up our designs.”

Antonella Ingrey 8F

“Ms Petherbridge is an excellent teacher who explained what to do really clearly each lesson.”

Claudia Montella and Lois Mohan-Stapleton 8L

Year 12 Students Visit WhitstableThis year a group of Year 12 ‘A’ Level Geography students visited the coastal town of Whitstable in Kent to carry out various fieldwork investigations about issues affecting the coastal environment in this area.

After all the excitement of counting and measuring pebbles on the beach, what better thing is there to do than enjoy real fish and chips with mushy peas down in the Harbour?

Mr. Sikuade, I’m afraid has still not plucked up the courage to eat oysters!

Well done, Year 12, you were a credit to St Anne’s.

For the first time St. Anne’s celebrated numeracy day on Friday 5th July whilst raising money for the NSPCC and the Friends of St. Anne’s. The day went very well with lots of numeracy taking place in lessons across all subjects, with activities on lower site at lunch time and cakes/ice lollies on sale at both the upper and lower sites at break time. We are still counting the money but have raised over £500 for these two very worthy causes. Cakes were donated by staff and students and Mrs Pozzuto made a beautiful cake that was raffled which Sanuja (7T) was the lucky winner of.

The girls also dressed up with maths as the theme. Anae (7J), Stephanie (7M), Rihanna (7T), Michelle (8T), Arianna (8L), Chi-Chi (9J) and Angel (10J) won prizes for best outfit.

We were very happy to celebrate numeracy and show that numeracy is everywhere and an important skill throughout life.

Thank you for all support with this day to students, staff and parents/carers.

Ms Sehested, Numeracy Co-ordinator

Congratulations to all of the Year 9 students who took part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge before Easter. St Anne’s students performed very well with outstanding results achieved by Ramiya Thileepkumar, Isabel Teixeira, Francisca Owusu-Boahen and Emma O’Sullivan who all received Silver Certificates and Roberta Aningbonsu, Chisom Okafor and Shilpa Sanjoy who all received Bronze Certificates. The nationwide challenge includes students from around the country in Years 9, 10 and 11, with St Anne’s students rising to challenge once again with their excellent results.

Junior Maths ChallengeCongratulations to all of the students who took part in the Junior Maths Challenge in April. St Anne’s Year 7 & 8 students achieved excellent results with the highlights including Emilia Ludwa and Eryka Labro who both achieved an outstanding Gold Certificate; Berenice Dienda, Jojo Guthrie and Candace Baffour who each received a Silver Certificate and Alyss Condrea, Cinta Joby, Scarlett Johnson, Erin O’Callaghan, Isis Sampat, Iyanu Ojo, Emma Galano and Julia Faron who all received Bronze Certificates. All students performed brilliantly in this high level challenge, confirming the strong mathematical ability of St Anne’s students. Mr Stephens, Teacher of Maths

Our Spanish Interlude

During the Easter break, we went to Spain for five days. We stayed in a typical Spanish hotel where we tried lots of different types of food. We learned Flamenco dancing, which was extremely tricky, but we had a good time. We went to Seville and visited ‘The Real Alcazar’ and went shopping in town.

We also had the opportunity to spend time at the beach with our friends. The best thing was when we went to Granada and visited Alhambra Palace.

On the last day we visited the Nerja Caves and spend the day in town. We tried the Spanish food there and we bought lots of souvenirs.

Mia Fordjour 10TWe shared memories and looked at photos whilst enjoying some

Spanish music and eating pizza.

It has been a busy, if somewhat wet, Summer of sport at St. Anne’s. However we had many great days where students were able to take part in so many activities.

RoundersFixtures were rearranged and rained off, but the matches we have had were well fought and the girls have shown great team spirit. Girls played in the Year 8, 9 & 10 tournaments and had fixtures in Year 7/8 combined and Year 9 leagues. Inter-form rounders took place for Years 7, 8 and 9 during the last weeks of term.

AthleticsAthletics was exciting - many medals and some tears and some squeals - but all in all an amazing team effort.

Seniors: The Seniors came out with the intention of taking home the medals and coming home victorious from the Enfield Championships as Champions of the Borough. They won a blistering relay where the competition didn’t know what hit them. Away they went and from the second leg it was clear that the team was unbeatable. Well done to the Seniors for an amazing win this year.

Juniors: The Junior team came out ready to rumble and as we raked in the medals and won a few events. We came away with the Years 7 and 8 placed second in the Borough and the Year 9s placed 6th. Very hard work and dedication this year – this has brought great rewards. We look forward to bigger and better things next year!

CricketMiss Troiano took eight girls to Lords Cricket ground to watch a county match. Despite the terrible weather, the girls got to play a game of kwik cricket and see the Women’s world cup trophy.

Mental Health Awareness

As a Department we believe that your physical exercise impacts on your mental health and so during mental health awareness week a mile a day was run/walked early in the morning and staff and students took part. It was an amazing success and was great to see the turn out.

Sports Day

The staff and students enjoyed fantastic weather and there was a great atmosphere for our annual Sports Day at Lee Valley Athletics Stadium. Congratulations to Faustina House who were overall winners, and to Michelle Minta who broke the 200m school record. She received the prestigious Helen Wood Cup for her achievement.

Sports Tour - Salou, SpainThe Spain tour was the first sports trip the school had ever done and I, Niamh, along with 34 other people, was lucky enough to take part in it. The experience was great, there was a lot more to do than just playing netball. The tour brought people closer together, more friendships were made across the 3 Year groups and it was like we were just one big family going on holiday, everyone loved it and contributed to the laughs that were made. Everyone enjoyed the evening activities which consisted of: a quiz, karaoke and a disco. In Porta Ventura the rides were great, no one was scared and

even if they were they would have overcome their fears. Then the netball day came and everyone was ready to play a tournament, the netball was great and everyone was determined to win. Everyone was cheering on their fellow players - it was a very fun day that was full of action and some of us decided to end the day in a massage chair! On the final day we went to visit Nou Camp - the Barcelona stadium - where we saw the ground,

museum, dressing rooms and much more. One thing that made the trip the best was the staff that came with us, they made the trip 100 times better. Mr Devine, Miss Geraci, Mrs Mann and Miss Troiano put up with us for 5 days and they gave up there holiday for us which I personally think was a decision they do not regret! Many memories and friendships were made by everyone. This experience has been a once in a life time with the best of friends. Thanks to the staff for the organisation of a fantastic trip! Niamh Gallagher 8A – Year 8 Netball Captain

Sports Awards Evening

Our annual Awards Evening took place on Tuesday 9th July. This was another wonderful celebration of sporting achievements. Girls who have represented the school received their ‘colours’. In the meantime, our Year 12 students have been busy covering Paper 2 content. During the bio-psychology and research methods topics, we have been using interactive and hands-on methods to ensure that students are well engaged and enjoying what they learn. They tried to understand the structure and function of our biological mechanisms, such as neurons, through using sweets (looks good, makes sense and tastes yummy!).

Prior to the exams starting, many of our Year 13 Psychology students took advantage of the Tutor2u Grade Booster Revision sessions where they received support in exam skills and techniques. The students really appreciated the guidance and felt they had gained further insight into what expect from the exam papers. A massive congratulations is now due. It was a stressful and busy period but they all pulled through and I am proud of the effort they all put in. Luckily, they now have a long summer break to look forward to and relax during. I’d like to wish them all the best of luck in their future.

We also used role plays and practicals (phrenology in action - do the bumps on your head tell us about your personality) to understand what reliability and validity really is. The London Zoo Phobia Workshop was also a lovely experience for all students. Not only were they able to understand the true impact that phobias can have on individuals, but were also given the opportunity to have a session of hypnotherapy to treat their arachnophobia.

Visiting Speaker from UCL

Science Club

This term we were delighted to welcome Angela from University College London to give a talk to our Year 10s about her field of work: Clinical Trials. Clinical trials involve drug testing procedures to make sure the drugs we have available on the market are safe and effective. She spoke about the process of trials - which ties in perfectly with the GCSE Biology trilogy course.

She spoke about how rigorous the process is for a drug to come to market, and even when it is on the market further monitoring is needed to check it works effectively. She gave us an example of how an anti-retroviral (AIDS) drug, used in the developing world had to be altered to be able to give to young children and babies - as a result they modified the adult pills and made a new ‘baby pill’, which helped to save many lives and made it easier to get the correct dose for young children.

She then answered many questions from pupils, many of which centred on career options in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and gave our pupils an understanding of the scientific world and careers within it. I would love to have her back to discuss careers with some of our Year 9s too - so watch this space! At the end of the day it is fantastic to have a strong woman to inspire our future generations into pursuing careers in STEM, an area which is under-represented by women in general. Miss Khan, KS3 Science Coordinator

Science Club on 8th July was joined by Vidura, a break-dancing STEM enthusiast who worked with our Science Club girls to make circuits using LEDs and Circuit breadboards. I myself learnt a lot, about how to connect a circuit using the equipment. They learnt why we have resistors in circuits and he demonstrated some of the other cool stuff he had, including robots and motors. The girls were also treated to some break-dancing by Vidura afterwards and were taught to pop and lock it (I think that’s right, haha!).

It’s great to have people coming in to do these workshops with our girls at St. Anne’s, because - as well as being an inspiration to our students - they realise there’s a lot more to science than boring text books and Bunsen Burners!

Science Club will continue next year. I hope to see many more KS3 students attending! Miss Khan, KS3 Science Coordinator

St Marianne Cope House

Yet again I was very proud of the members of St Marianne House at Sports Day, the day when we all came together as a House. I enjoyed spending the day with my girls, and shouting encouragement as we watched our House members putting all their effort into their events on both track and field. We enjoyed watching the girls doing their all to be first over the line, and as you can see, they had a great time cheering on their House members. Unique Marianne banners were made, bandanas worn and a festive atmosphere prevailed with most people eating their lunch very early on in the proceedings! It was a very special occasion when we could all be together sharing the excitement.

I have been very privileged to be the Head of Marianne House and have really enjoyed the fund raising events which have generated not only fun, but valuable contributions to worthy causes. It has been a real pleasure and I will reflect with fond memories on the laughs and fun times the girls have given me, in my retirement. God bless you all, girls!

Bulletin Extra • Key Stage 3Once again we have come to the end of another year in Key Stage 3. I would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt ‘so long’ to Year 9 and to Mrs Jones as they move to the Upper Site. We wish them all lots of luck in KS4. I would also like to say a huge welcome to Mrs Cheeseman who will be re-joining us from the Upper Site as the Achievement Leader for our new Year 7s in September.

The summer term is always the culmination of the hard work and effort that the girls have put in over the academic year. All of the students sat their end of year tests in May, with Year 9 having their first experience of sitting their exams in the school hall.

The end of the summer term signals the time for our annual end of year trips:

Year 9 enjoyed an eventful day at Thorpe Park on Thursday 20th June, the park succumbed to a sea of sapphire blue t-shirts signalling the arrival of St Anne’s. A fun time was had by students and staff, venturing on all the different rides.

Year 8 enjoyed a gloriously sunny day at Chessington World of Adventures. The students and staff looked dazzling in their pink t-shirts. Having lots of fun on the rides and enjoying the safari experience.

Act justly, love tenderly, walk humbly with your God.

Congratulations to Isabella Gorgulho 9L for winning the Headteacher’s Prize 2019.

To quote Mrs Gilling, “Isabella is an understated yet inspiring m e m b e r of her year group, She cont inua l ly strives to be a positive role model for her peers and the younger s t u d e n t s . Ever polite and positive she is a cheerful member of her individual form; and a valued member of the year group. If she is in your friendship group she is a lot of fun to be around. Isabella embodies in practise what it is to be a Saint Anne’s girl, turning any of her failures into her successes.”

Bulletin Extra • Key Stage 3

Mother Nature didn’t disappoint the Year 7s on Monday 17th June, the sun was blazing and the students looked fabulous in their red t-shirts at Herts Young Mariners Base. The girls climbed, sailed, kayaked and shot arrows, laughing and singing throughout the day.

Thursday 27th June saw our annual sports day take place at the Lee Valley Stadium. The sun was scorching and the girls were amazing as ever with many St Anne’s sports day records being smashed. Congratulations to all of the students who took part and those who won their events!

We are eagerly awaiting results day on Thursday 15th August to celebrate with them. We wish you all a restful six weeks holiday but be mindful Year 12 to prepare for your PPE exams, which start on the first week back in September. We look forward to seeing you all safely back to school, ready and prepared for your final year.

We held our Year 13 BBQ on Wednesday 26th June and luckily the rain held off. There was lots of tasty chicken, specially prepared by some of the Year 13s plus a big treat from Ella-Maya who brought along some delicious homemade chicken and ribs, which resulted in us having a real feast. Mrs Turner presented her “Turner Awards” for the last time and then the party started. Chanelle Cleland got the party started and we all felt she definitely has a future as a professional DJ. Even Lynord was up dancing!!! Thank you for a great evening, girls.

Guest SpeakersWe have been so fortunate to have Benedicte Ngoma and fantastic team of ex-St. Anne’s students visit the school to share their experience of personal statements, pathways to their university and career choices and their current success. Their presentations have kept the Year 12s listening to their every word and they have taken away so many good ideas and tips to help them prepare for University. We are very grateful to all these lovely young ladies. We are very proud of your success and that you came back to St. Anne’s to share your journey. We look forward to meeting you again next year.
