Learn to teach English as a foreign language

Our story began in 1953 when John Haycraft (CBE) and his wife Brita Haycraft started a school, because they believed in intercultural understanding through language learning.

Our founders created the first qualification for English language teachers, now known as the CELTA. Worldwide the CELTA is the industry gold standard for new teachers.

International House London is the no. 1 year-round language school with the best value courses in central London as rated by the EL Gazette and based on British Council inspections.

We have changed people's lives through language for over 65 years.

When I finished my CELTA, I applied to one of the companies I heard about from the career advice session at the end of the course. It was to teach online, which was what I was interested in doing, and luckily this was a good move as we went into lockdown shortly afterwards. I got the job and have been teaching my Chinese students since April.

I enjoy the work and really appreciate the teacher training I received at IH – it has been invaluable! Having the teaching experience and understanding how people learn has helped me really help my students and make their learning a positive and productive experience.

After taking the CELTA course at International House London, I got my first job as a teacher in London, which showed me you don't need to be a native speaker of English to be an EFL teacher here. You just have to be good at what you do! I couldn't be happier!

I did my CELTA in April 2019. I had spent 10 years working in marketing for a large financial media company and for me, doing the CELTA course was an opportunity for career change and adventure.

By the summer, I was teaching English to international students in London and by September of that same year I was in Bangkok. I didn’t stray far though – International House is a family; securing a CELTA from IH is like unlocking the door to a hugely respected and well-established network of schools across the globe. I secured work at International House Thailand and was suddenly thrust into a whole new world. A world of tuk-tuks and street food and sweltering temperatures and noise and chaos and colour!

Since my teaching role at International House Thailand, I continued with another teaching position at Wall Street English, before coming full circle: I’m now back in the marketing seat. A week ago, I started a new role as Marketing and Communications Manager at Shrewsbury International School, Bangkok.

I wake up every morning and now I see banana trees and palm trees from my window. I’m learning Thai, I’m visiting amazing places and most importantly I’m meeting exciting new people – both personally and professionally.

For me, the CELTA truly was a lifeline. And a CELTA from IH London is just the first step to a uniquely different and exciting world.

Since completing my CELTA online in the UK, I have taken up several 1-1 teaching jobs online for all ability levels. After completing the course, I moved to Taiwan where I spend my time teaching different groups of people from university postgraduates

studying for a masters to online 1-1 classes with pupils from all over East Asia. I plan to continue this for another year before moving back to the UK and continuing on with my own studies with the vision of doing a master’s in education.

It worked well for me to do the CELTA online course in August between finishing one job and starting a new one and it was an excellent learning experience. I started a new job (working with my church) in

September. But in 2021 I'm moving to Tanzania where amongst other things I'll be able to use my CELTA to teach English in the local community. Holding a CELTA qualification is also helpful in obtaining a visa for Tanzania.

HANNAH JACKSON AGE 41 BRITISH

I undertook my CELTA at International House London in 2018. Not only did I love doing the course itself and making great friends on the way, but my CELTA set me up for some of the most exciting years of my life.

Soon after completing my CELTA, I headed off to Australia to teach English at a school on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. This was my first ‘real-life’ teaching experience, but my training had prepared me well and I settled into the school quickly, and was almost immediately getting great feedback from students and teachers alike. I felt like I was finally doing something that mattered – sharing a skill that would help my students both personally and professionally, and having the time of my life whilst I did it!

I met some amazing students from around the globe, many of whom I am still in touch with; and got to have some incredible experiences as part of my job, including running the school’s activity programme which brought me to theme parks along the Gold Coast, the stunning Fraser Island, and allowed me to better explore my own local area of Noosa, including meeting some of the local wildlife!

There’s no way I would have had the most amazing year of my life so far had I not done my CELTA, and I’m looking forward to returning to Australia once the Covid-19 crisis is over.

My CELTA has also been so helpful in the uncertain times in which we are currently living. I’m riding out Covid-19 in the Netherlands, a country quite unfamiliar for me. Without a good grasp of Dutch, it has been very hard for me to find a job here, but my CELTA helped me get a job teaching English online, helping me stay afloat financially, stay safe as I can work from home, and continue helping my students achieve their English goals.

I am genuinely so excited to see what places my CELTA brings me to once the world opens up again, and can’t wait to see what experiences are still in store!

CIARA MURPHY AGE 25 IRISH

Since completing the CELTA with International House London, I have been working as an Academic English tutor (IELTS) at Kingston University. Although the CELTA was intense I learnt so much and have made lifelong friends from the program.

Choose the CELTA that suits your preference for learning. If you are great online and happy in this mode, then an online course may suit you. If you know you want to teach online, choose this option. If you like learning in a face-to-face situation, then come and join us at IH in the school.

Everyone says 'the CELTA is so intense' – but the IH course was thoughtfully structured, and we were never overloaded with info or work. And throughout, the tutors carefully lead us through what we needed to do, and I felt I could ask for help or more info at any point. I felt constantly reassured. In short, I feel the tutors did a good job of releasing the pressure that seems to build up during the CELTA course.

DAVID EDGAR, BRITISH CELTA FACE-TO-FACE (FULL-TIME)

One of the most challenging yet rewarding courses I've ever taken.

YLENIA CALO, ITALIAN CELTA FACE-TO-FACE (FULL-TIME)

I really enjoyed the whole month doing CELTA course here in IH London. Tutors are super supportive and professional. Staff in IH London are all friendly and helpful.

VERA WANG, CHINESE CELTA FACE-TO-FACE (FULL-TIME)

I found the course extremely useful and valuable to my knowledge about

teaching. I couldn't have asked for better tutors and I learned so much every day.

SOPHIE LOUSE KING, BRITISH CELTA FACE-TO-FACE (FULL-TIME)

The course was superbly structured and taught me a lot.

ALEX ROGERSON, BRITISH CELTA FACE-TO-FACE (FULL TIME)

The course was of a very high standard. It’s clear IH London is the leader in its field.

SARAH WEBSTER, BRITISH CELTA FACE-TO-FACE (PART-TIME)

This has been a great experience both for my development as a teacher and my life here. I have acquired the knowledge and

skills needed for a teaching profession and got to know a lot of friendly col-

leagues. I appreciate IH for providing the platform to make this happen.

ZHUOXUAN CAO, CHINESE CELTA FACE-TO-FACE (PART-TIME)

who fostered such a positive learning experience, which was paced well and has been a source of hope and fun during what's been a tough year.

Age

Our minimum age is 18 years.

Insurance

It is highly recommended that all students have comprehensive travel, repatriation, medical and course insurance. We can provide competitively priced student insurance for £7/week. Please see www.ihlondon.com/faq/is-insurance-included-inthe-course/ for more details.

Student visa regulations

You may require a student visa to study in the UK. For the latest information about student visas for the UK, see our Getting a Visa page (http://www.ihlondon.com/useful-information/ getting-a-visa/) or visit the www.gov.uk website.

Anyone with a UK standard visitor visa will be allowed to study for up to six months. A study visa will be required for extended stays of up to 11 months. An alternative but more expensive route is the Student Visa (Sponsorships) visa route. We are a Student Visa (Sponsorships) Sponsor under the UKVI’s points-based system (no. 5BY3ENNA5).

If a visa is required, it is your responsibility to obtain the correct type. If you require a visa and arrive without one, you will not be able to attend the school. You must study for a minimum of 15 hours per week to comply with immigration regulations. A course may be terminated at any point if a participant is found not to have the right to study in the UK or if the conditions under which they are allowed to study in the UK are broken.

The school has a legal obligation to collect and maintain application information, as well as passport and visa data. For Student Visa (Sponsorships) visa holders, the School has an obligation to inform the Immigration Authorities about students whose attendance falls below If a visa application is unsuccessful, yet all documentation was correctly submitted, please send a copy of the visa refusal letter to our admissions team. A course fee refund less £50 will be issued when we receive this document.

By making bookings with International House London, you agree to these terms and conditions.

If you book your programme at International House London through an agency in your country, then the contract you have is with your agent, and different terms and conditions may apply.

Course availability and cancellation

Every attempt will be made to place students on the course of their choice. However, we cannot guarantee a particular course and timetable until the student has taken an entry test and, for some teacher training courses, had an interview. In the event of insufficient applications for a course, the school reserves the right to offer an alternative course of equal value or a refund.

Your right to Cancel

We understand that you may want to change your course dates before the course starts. Changes made to start dates are dependent on availability and will incur an administration charge of £20 Should you need to cancel or postpone your study the following terms apply for the refund of tuition fees paid for Cambridge CELTA, Cambridge Delta and Cert IBET courses

• Up until 15 working days (3weeks) before the start of the course – full refund, minus £50 admin fee, or up to 12-month postponement

• Between 15 (3weeks) and 5 working days (1 week) before the start of the course – full refund minus the deposit, or up to 12-month postponement

• Less than 5 working days (1 week) before the start of the course – 50% refund minus the deposit or up to 12-month postponement

• Once course starts – no refund, no postponement.

Any refunds will be paid up to sixty days following the date of cancelation. Refunds are only payable to the bank account used for the original booking or card. Any courses that are postponed and then subsequently cancelled are bound by the same terms and conditions that would have applied at the time of the initial course postponement.

Any changes after a course has started will result in the loss of fees paid.

Attendance and student holidays

Teacher training students are expected to attend their classes regularly and on time. Students forfeit course fees if they are late, absent, or leave before the course ends.

Public Holidays Unless otherwise stated there are no classes on public holidays applicable to England. There will be no classes from Saturday 24th December 2022. Classes restart on Tuesday 3rd January 2023.

Airport and railway station transfers

We can provide transport from your airport or train station to your accommodation at prices stated in our price lists. Once booked these fees are non-refundable irrespective of whether or not the service is used. These fees must be paid at least six weeks before the transfer date.

Code of Conduct

The school reserves the right to terminate an enrolment without issuing a refund, where a participant’s behaviour is such that it would be unreasonable for them to continue their studies.

Special offers

Discounts cannot be applied retrospectively to existing bookings and only one discount can be applied to a booking.

Variation to fees

We usually set, and hold, our fees for a calendar year. Fee are chargeable based on the fee for the course published in the brochure for the year in which you choose to study. However, if you book a course before 1st October for the following year you may choose to be charged the fee applicable in the previous year. Please note that if you extend your course, additional weeks will be chargeable at the fee applicable on the date you extend your booking.

Force Majeure

The School will not be responsible for the non-performance of any contractually agreed obligations if they are unable to take place due to an act of Force Majeure. Force majeure includes: armed conflict, fire, flooding, civil disorder, industrial action, acts of terrorism, unusually adverse weather conditions, natural disaster, infectious diseases (e.g. Covid-19) and any other events outside of our reasonable control which may lead to the inability of the School to fulfil its obligations. If any of the above occurs, the School will endeavour to offer the best alternative arrangements, dates, or venues available. The School does not accept liability for any compensation that is greater than the total fees paid.

Course changes made by IH London in the event of an enforced school closure due to COVID19

Where the School is unable to offer the booked course and accommodation, due to enforced school closure, the following provisions will be made to protect the student and any associated ETO. The School will offer the following in the event of not being able to run face to face courses at the London school:

· A substitute online course will be offered for the same enrolment period

· A course which has not yet started can be postponed for a new start date within 12 months of the original enrolment date

· A course which has already begun can be continued online without interruption and will revert to face to face when the School reopens unless the student prefers to remain online

· A course which has already begun can also be postponed with a new start date within 12 months of the date that the school closed. The course will continue for the unused segment of the booking

· Any unused accommodation will be refunded in full

· If the course is postponed no additional administration fees will be charged.

· If neither of the above options (online or postponement) are selected the School will refer to its policy on Force Majeure

· A refund will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Any approved refunds will be payable up to 60 days from the date on which the booking is cancelled
