This investigation is designed to apply an advanced kinetic-thermodynamic model on the
experimental data obtained from acidic and alkaline corrosion of iron using mono- and bis-azo
dyes as corrosion inhibitors. The inhibition properties of the tested azo dyes on corrosion of iron in
HNO 3 and NaOH media were analyzed by gravimetric, thermometric and polarization
measurements. The three studied methods gave consistent results. Polarization study showed that
all the inhibitors are mixed type in acidic, act mainly as cathodic in alkaline solution. The
synthesized azo dye derivatives exhibit good inhibition properties, obeys the Frumkin adsorption
isotherm. The large values of the change in the standard free energy of adsorption (ΔG o ads),
equilibrium constant (K ads) and binding constant (K b) revealed that the reactions proceed
spontaneously and result in highly efficient physisorption mechanism and stronger electrical
interaction between the double layer existing at the phase boundary and the adsorbing molecules.
The inhibition efficiency depends on the number of adsorption oxygen sites (OH and OMe groups),
their charge density and π-electron clouds. The inhibition efficiency evaluated via theoretical
methods was well accorded with reported experimental ones, following the same order as: α-
naphthyl- ligand > β-naphthyl > p-anisdine > p-toluidine > o-toluidine > m-toluidine derivative.
This research might provide a theoretical inhibition performance evaluation approach for
homologous inhibitors. © 2012 University of Manchester and the authors.

Studies using chemical and electrochemical techniques were carried out on an iron electrode in 2.0
mo I/liter -nitric acid and 2.0 mol/liter sodium hydroxide solutions to evaluate the corrosion
behavior. Schiff bases investigated are found to function well as corrosion inhibitors for iron metal
in both nitric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions, but a better performance is noticed in nitric
acid solution. This is due to the less negative potential of iron in acidic solution, favoring adsorption
of the additives. The Schiff bases act as mixed type inhibitors in acidic solution, whereas they cause
only inhibition of the cathode process in alkaline medium and the magnitude of the displacement of
4
the Tafel plot is proportional to its concentration. The additives inhibit the corrosion through their
ability of getting adsorbed on the iron surface by interaction with π-electrons of the aromatic rings,
and the azo methine group. The adsorption process was found to obey Temkin adsorption
isotherm. Also, the adsorbed Schiff base molecules interact with iron ions formed on the metal
surface leading to neutral and cationic iron-Schiff base complexes. Models for the inhibition
corrosion behavior were developed based upon various statistical analyses of the experimental data.

The inhibition of corrosion of iron in 2 M nitric acid and 2 M sulfuric acid solutions by substituted
phenylhydantoin, thiohydantoin, and dithiohydantoin compounds was measured using
thermometric, weight loss, and polarization methods. The three methods gave consistent results.
The polarization curves indicated that the hydantoin compounds act as mixed-type inhibitors. The
adsorption of the inhibitors were found to obey the Temkin adsorption isotherm. The higher
inhibition efficiency of the additives in nitric with respect to sulfuric acid solution may be
attributed to the reduced formation of soluble quaternary nitrogen salts in nitric acid medium,
favouring adsorption of the parent additive on the metal surface. The obtained results indicate that
the corrosion rate of iron in both acids increases with increasing temperature, both in absence and
presence of the tested inhibitors. Kinetic-thermodynamic model functions and Temkin isotherm
data are compared and discussed. The synergistic effect of halide anions on the inhibition efficiency
of the hydantoin compounds was also investigated.

The efficiency of chloro, dichloro, trichloro, bromo, and iodoacetic acids as inhibitors for acid
corrosion of iron was studied using polarization technique. A significant retardation of the
corrosion rate is observed in the inhibited HNO3 solution. The rate of corrosion depends on the
nature of the inhibitor and its concentration and on the temperature of the system. It was found
that iodoacetic acid has a significant inhibiting effect on the corrosion of the metal and protection
efficiencies approaching 94% were measured. The inhibitor shifts the free corrosion potential in
the cathodic direction and polarizes both the cathodic and anodic half reactions. It was found that
the compounds under consideration are chemisorbed on the iron surface according to the Frumkin
isotherm. The Tafel slope is approximately constant and independent of the concentration of the
inhibitor. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption obtained reveal a strong interaction of
these inhibitors on the iron surface.

Corrosion inhibition by methoionine (MET), citrulline (CIT), alanine (AL), glycine (GLY) and
hydroxyproline (HPR) with respect to the dissolution of tungsten stainless steels in hydrochloric
acid solution was studied using potentiodynamic, Tafel extrapolation and polarization resistance
methods. Polarization curves indicated that the primary passivation potential (Epp) and the
transpassive region shift towards more positive potentials in presence of the studied amino acids,
i.e. there is more passivation at wide potential range in the presence of amino acid inhibitors. The
corrosion parameters are dependent on the percentage of tungsten in the alloy composition as well
as the nature of the tested amino acids. The intermetallic compound Fe3W2 may form a galvanic
cell with the matrix around the Fe3W2 phase within the matrix that is formed as a dispersed phase.

This paper outlines the hydrometallurgical processing and the various possible approaches for the
6
recovery of metallic antimony from its antimonite sulphide ore by electrolysis. Thermodynamic
calculations have been made to find the optimum conditions for roasting and/or sulphate roasting
of Wadi Abu Quraiya antimonite ore. The antimonite ore (Sb2S3) is roasted directly without
concentration and large savings in reagent and chemical processes are expected. A suitable roasting
temperature of 1200 K for 4 hours has been determined. Metallic antimony is cathodically
electrodeposited with a high current efficiency at current densities of 350 to 500 A/m2 depending on
the composition of leach liquor solutions. The results of the electron microscopy investigation
confirmed by metal value data in the ASTM cards are in good agreement with the chemical
analysis.

Stibnite ore at Wadi Abu Quraiya, situated in the central Eastern Desert of Egypt has been
subjected to petrographical, mineralogical, infrared, X -ray diffraction, chemical and spectral
analyses. Hydrometallurgical treatment based on leaching with acids, precipitation and electrode-
position of metal values from the ore have been developed. Studies to investigate suitable
electrolytic baths for the cathodic deposition of metallic antimony either directly from the leach
liquor or in the presence of complexing agents have been carried out. The influence of various
factors on the electrodeposition process of the element from its electrolyte solutions is discussed.
Advantages of the flowsheet and various approaches depending on convenient electrolytes for the
deposition of antimony from the stibnite ore have been investigated. The results of
spectrophotometric and chemical analyses revealed that the purity of the metal is > 99%.

The ore of the ilmenite deposit in Wadi Abou Ghalaga, Eastern Desert has been subjected to
chemical, differential thermal and X-ray analyses. Thermophysical and chemical treatment of the
ore based on sintering at 1000°C upon which electrical conductivity, dielectric constant and
dielectric loss vs. temperature have been developed. Results obtained led to promising data in
forming its very high dielectric constant and very low dielectric loss (tan δ), which makes it suitable
as a good source for mass production of ceramic capacitors. Furthermore, the AC conduction
mechanism and energy gap as well as the extrinsic activation energy were evaluated. - In the
present work, all of the electric and dielectric measurements of the ilmenite ore make it suitable for
the production of ceramic capacitors in the electronic industry.

Acid-leach residue resulting from the sulphate roasting of Zn-Pb Egyptial carbonate ore is used for
7
the production of lead, after hydrometallurgical treatments. Studies to investigate various baths for
the deposition of lead and lead dioxide have been carried out. The results showed a wide variety of
electrolysis, either soluble simple salts, or those containing complex anions and in virtually all cases,
very high current efficiencies are obtained. The effects of various factors on the electrodeposition of
Pb and PbO2 are discussed. In commercial practice, the properties and service requirements
dictate the precise electrolyte that should be used since the properties of electrodeposited lead vary
with the baths. Mechanism of the electrolytic production of the element and its dioxide is discussed.
The results spectrophotometric and chemical analyses revealed that the purity of the metal is >

A study has been made to investigate the effect of some azoheterocyclic dyes of the type 3-arylazo
1,2,4-triazole (AT) on the corrosion of copper exposed to 0.5 M nitric acid solution at different
temperatures and at different AT concentrations. Using potentiodynamic polarization and Tafel
electrochemical methods, it can be shown that AT compounds are good inhibitors of copper
corrosion in HNO3 solution. The kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the inhibited system
were determined. The high inhibition efficiency of these compounds may be due to the adsorption
of the additive itself and/or the adsorption of the formed Cu(II)-AT complexes at the polarized
electrode interface. Cathodic polarization measurements showed that AT dyes are predominantly
cationic inhibitors. © 1995 Springer-Verlag.

Electrolytic extraction methods are used to process Igla cassiterite concentrate in the central part
of the Eastern Desert of Egypt. The cassiterite is subjected to alkaline leaching using caustic soda in
the presence of sodium nitrate as an oxidant in a ball-mill autoclave, where grinding and leaching
take place simultaneously. The influences of the amount and concentration of caustic soda and
sodium nitrate, and of the digestion temperature and time on the alkaline leaching efficiency of tin
recovery are discussed. The results obtained are found to coincide well with the corresponding
ASTM cards for Na//2SnO//3 multiplied by (times) 3H//2O. Acid leaching and fusion methods are
also applied to cassiterite processing. The effect of leaching efficiency of various baths, the optimum
current density and the temperature on the tin recovery and the current efficiency are tabulated.

The bulk of the work consists of a theoretical study of the possibility of submitting Umm-Gheig
carbonate ore to sulphate roasting. The use of the admixture with pyrites is to enable a carbonate
ore to be treated in a similar way to a sulphide ore, and by doing so, to produce a roasted product
capable of being treated by orthodox zinc electrowinning methods using sulphate solutions.
Thermodynamic studies have been made to find the optimum conditions for sulphate roasting, in
either normal air or enriched 36% oxygen air. The results of the electron microscopic investigation
confirmed by metal value data given in the ASTM cards coincide well with results given by
