Heeding the global call for increased environ-mental awareness, South African toy retailerToys R Us has encouraged children to take own-ership of their environment through a flowerplanting initiative to mark World Earth Day, onApril 22.Toys R Us employees, together with childrenfrom the Durban Children’s Home, planted a va-riety of succulent foliage in the home’s gardens ina bid to prompt the youngsters to sustain their en-vironment.

“We believe that environmental conservation is ashared responsibility and therefore chose to leadby example by making a sustainable contributionto the environment,” said Nicole Annells, mar-keting manager, Toys R Us South Africa. Through the Earth Day initiative the retailersought to give back to the environment while pro-viding children from the home with the opportu-nity to plant and nurture their own greenery.“Recognising the importance of instilling in chil-dren the responsibility to respect and protect the

environment, wechose to replenish theenvironment while re-inforcing this messagewithin the youngergeneration. We un-derstand that environ-mental awarenessmust be fosteredwithin children atearly age when theirattitudes toward theworld are forming. Byinvolving the childrenfrom the home in thisinitiative we hope tooffer them an opportu-nity to learn throughexperience,” she said. The exercise further

exposed the childrento other environmentalconcerns such aswater scarcity- in a bidto conserve water, succulents were

specifically chosen due to their durability andminimal water dependence. Thina Hlope, the home’s resource developer, said she welcomed the activity and the excite-ment which it spurred among the children. “Children learn best through experience, so

being involved in thisprocess helps them toappreciate the value ofplants. Having plantedthe succulents them-selves also gives eachof the children a sense

of responsibility and ownership, which will makethem more inclined to nurture and protect theseplants,” added Hlope. The home continually encourages the children toparticipate and eco-friendly practice. As part of its life skills programme, the childrenare able plant vegetables and maintain the home’svegetable garden. Earth Day aims to encourage people across theworld to be more environmentally friendly andevery year, more than one billion people acrossthe world mark the day through activities that pro-mote environmental awareness.

The city received reports of a protest by residentsfrom the Ward 29 informal settlement on Sunday. The city’s Metro Police members, Disaster Man-agement Unit and Operation Sukuma Sakhe/Rapid Response officials were immediately dis-patched to the affected area to collect informationfrom protesting residents and to provide neces-sary immediate interventions. damaging property, injuring law-abiding citizensor blockading roads, thus preventing others fromgoing to school and work,” he said.Nxumalo added that no amount of anger justifiesdestroying and vandalising state property. The situation is under control. Safety measures, such as CCTV cameras, are in place to monitorthe movements of vehicles and to ensure that fur-ther traffic disruption is minimised. Law enforce-ment personnel will take necessary action wherethere are transgressions.eThekwini Municipality is deeply concernedabout the violent public protests taking place inthe city. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS)held a successful media breakfast 2016, at the Sun-coast Hotel, on Friday. Members of the media andspecial guests were invited to hear about the organi-sation’s festive season campaign and their partnershipwith global healthcare company, Abbott, on an inter-national movement that urges the youth to becometheir number one donors. Cristiano Ronaldo has alsojoined this exciting campaign. The international movement, Be The 1™ Donor, wasconceptualised by Abbott in an effort to respond tothe global decline in the number of new and youngdonors. Ronaldo started donating as a 24-year-oldwhen he witnessed one of his teammates battle withthe search for a stem cell donor for his ailing son.Seven years later, he is giving blood regularly.Currently, South African tertiary students and pupilscontribute about 40 percent to the national blood re-serves, supporting them to continue this as a life-longcommitment is an important objective for theSANBS. 3000 units of blood must be collected everyday; 27 percent of the collected blood is used for med-

ical cases, 26 percent for childbirth and gynaecologi-cal cases, 21 percent for surgical cases, 10 percentfor paediatric cases, six percent used for orthopaediccases, again six percent for research and laboratoryand six percent for casualties.A recent SANBS study conducted to determine themotivation behind youth’s choice to give, revealedthat there was no powerful single-minded call-to-action for them to identify with.Youth who took part in the SANBS research recom-mended that the blood service should involve recog-nisable influencers in order to personalise the brandfor them. These requirements are met well by the BETHE 1™ Donor Movement. It is built around footballicon and committed blood donor, Ronaldo who repre-sents goodwill and is admired by young people, butalso employs emotive messaging that resonates withthe younger generation.“SANBS is proud to be part of this movement and wehope that it will not only put blood donations on theagenda for discussion among young people but that itwill also cause them to take a look in the mirror and

say: ‘I have the power tosave lives and I am goingto use it’,” said SANBSmarketing manager,Silungile Mlambo. The South African cam-paign which waslaunched on October 17will recruit local ambas-sadors to join Ronaldo, including students, radioand TV personalities. They will take part inawareness-raising ac-tions and be prominenton social and traditionalmedia platforms tospread the word and sup-port the global move-ment across SouthAfrica.“Our donors may or maynot have such personalreasons for donating asRonaldo, but our activa-tions aim to remindyoung donors that some-one they might nevermeet needs their bloodand plasma right now,”said Ms Mlambo.

eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede recently de-livered blankets and food to sympathise with aPuntans Hill family after their home was de-stroyed in a petrol bomb attack earlier last week.Gumede promised that the city would assist thefamily to find accommodation. Councillor Gumede, who met with the family andresidents on Friday, expressed her dismay at theattack saying communities needed to work to-gether and not fight each other. The attack cameafter the family’s land had been illegally invadedallegedly by local shack dwellers. She said her visit to the area was to let the familyknow she felt their pain and also to show themsupport.“We as the city preach unity and that communi-ties need to support each other. Our hope lies withthe local committee to help this family. We arehere to let the family know that we will assistthem with accommodation,” she said. She toldresidents that she regretted the attack and wouldensure the area was safe, she also thanked otherofficials who had already assisted the family.“We have to fight for people’s safety. However,we cannot do anything without the community’shelp,” said Cllr Gumede.A relative of the family, whose house was petrol

bombed said, “What happened was very trauma-tising and difficult for the family. But now thatwe see the mayor here, it gives us hope that some-thing will be done,” said a relative of the woman.“This attack affects us all including the city. In-vestors will be afraid to come and invest herewhen they see such incidents. We cannot allowit. It is important to first ensure that the family issettled and receives the necessary counselling be-fore focusing on their accommodation. There willbe security on the ground in the area to ensure res-idents’ safety,” Cllr Gumede said.Cllr Gumede also said the city took a zero toler-ance approach to land invasions and appropriatelegal action would be taken. The city’s Land Invasion Unit is mandated to stopand discourage people who attempt to illegallyoccupy land. The municipality is guided by Coun-cil policies and the court of law. Residents are en-couraged to report to authorities when they seepeople invading land or Municipal property.Members of the public are encouraged to contactthe eThekwini Municipality’s Security Manage-ment Unit on 031-311-4699 or 079-821-8879 toreport land invasion.

You mean so much to me. Ilove you so so much. My dear sweet Rekha, my bestfriend and sister. You have taught me so much andI do not know how I am supposed to move on with-out you here guiding and encouraging me. Youmean so much to me. I love you so much. Rest inpeace, my beautiful friend. According to Crouch, singing is something that isso good for elderly folk. “Singing improvesbreathing and provides good exercise whenmovement is included,’’ explains Crouch. “It is atime to reminisce, a time to socialise and bondwith others into a tight group, it is a way of ex-pressing oneself and it lifts the mood. Singingcan be done from a standing or sitting position sopeople in wheelchairs are not excluded.” The Issy Geshen Lamont Home, the competitionorganisers and hosts, secured funding from theNational Arts Council and then promoted thecompetition by visiting 17 old age homes.

“The Issy Geshen Choir travelled to Old AgeHomes in Pietermaritzburg, Dundee, on theNorth and South coasts and in Durban central. They enjoyed singing at the different homes andtelling the residents about the choir festival,’’continues Crouch.

The 11 participating homes, six up from the pre-cious two years, were:

Issy Geshen Home, John Dunn House, John Con-radie House, Amaoti, Abalindi Old Age Home,St Antonine Home from Dundee, Emuseni OldAge Home from Edendale, KwaMashu ChristianCare Society, Zibambeleni Old Age Home andEkhanana and Verulam Day and Frail Care Cen-tre.

The much anticipated event was held in theMuthande Community Centre in Lamontville andas the 400 guests and participants arrived, theMuthande choir entertained them.

The eThekweni Municipality once again gener-ously supplied the sound system and DJ as wellas fruit for all the visitors and a delicious lunch.

The choirs were made up of frail, elderly folkbeautifully dressed in their various uniforms andeach choir had to sing two songs of their choiceand were limited to a maximum of 15 members.

According to the audience and confirmed by thejudges, Mrs Ricky White, Mrs Liz Roberts andMs Nonkwe Dlamini, the standard was very high. After much deliberation, the following homestook third, second and first place respectively:Zimbambeleni Old Age Home received R2, 000for achieving third position, KwaMashu Chris-tian Care Society were handed a cheque for R3,

000 for coming second while Tafta’s John Con-radie House, first time participants, walked awaywith R5, 000 for first place.

The morning ended off beautifully with themassed choirs singing the South African NationalAnthem.

KZN unites for the province’s ill and destitute children land. Collection of new toys is also underway atGame stores across the province.

East Coast Radio presenter, Damon Beard saidthis is an amazing initiative. “It so rewarding tosee little faces light up when we visit hospitals. You know, for many of the children, this isn’t justthe first new toy they will own, but the first newthing they will own.”

Behind the scenes, the East Coast Radio’s ToyStory with Game team is working around-the-clock to pack the new toys. Already the team hasvisited Stanger Provincial Hospital, OsindisweniHospital and Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, ensuringthat every child received a present from the peo-ple of KZN.

The Red Cross Air Mercy Service will take newtoys to areas that are inaccessible to the on-the-ground team.

One of KZN’s longest-running CSI initiatives,

East Coast Radio’s Toy Story with Game is nowin its 16th year. This year, every cent of the fundsdonated to the campaign will be channelled intothe Game AmaLunchbox project that is aimed atfeeding children from disadvantaged back-grounds. This project was launched in 2008 to curb thedetrimental effects of hunger on the educationaldevelopment of children – hungry children can-not concentrate on schoolwork. The AmaLunch-box project provides disadvantaged schoolsnationwide with the facilities to allow them toprepare nutritious meals in hygienic conditions.

The campaign’s Toy Story Corporate Day initia-tive takes place at The Pavilion shopping centreon December 02. Celebrities and sports stars willbe joining the East Coast Radio team for amarathon 12-hour live broadcast and telethon.Businesses and individuals will be able to pledgefunds towards the campaign as well as challengeeach other on-air.

Discovered in India and used for more than 4,000 years, the medicinal and cosmetic benets of turmeric is proven. In Aryurveda, the Indian Holistic medicine system, turmeric is highly reputed. UVL, recogniz d for its Vitamin C cream and organic products, produces a facial cream and serum based on aryurvedic and scientic benets of the turmeric plant. UVL ensures that the Pure Turmeric Oil Extract used in the facial cream and serum is chemical free. The aryurvedic and scientic value of turmeric resides in its powerful anti oxidant capabilities. Our skin is exposed to oxidative stress, the consequences of which are uneven skin tone, age spots, wrinkles, dry skin and loss of elasticity. Turmeric, known thousands of years ago, counteracts the oxidative stress in the skin. Applying turmeric to your skin (turmeric oil extract), signicantly improves the skins physiological parameters including skin hydration, anti wrinkle activity, skin toning and luminosity.Priscilla Woodley, Sales and Brand Manager, says that the UVL Turmeric Complexion Cream and serum is a very powerful product, with big medicinal skin value (the products feels medicated since it comes from the ginger root). It is excellent for treating hyperpigmentation (freckles, age spots and melasma), which is mainly caused byexposure to sun. Melasma, is very common skin problem amongst Indian women, whilst freckles and ages occurs in white skin type. Turmeric improves dark skin discolouration by up to 70%, which is a huge gain. Tumeric oil and serum contains advanced pep id s to balance the skin tone in multiple ways. The cream is recommended for day and the serum for night use. 1

25 November 2016

By James Siddall

Too subtle. Too understated, even clinical. Too little to differentiate new models

from old. These, and variations thereof, are

some of the criticisms levelled at pretty much all Audis bar perhaps the R8 - a car that in its latest guise looks like it belongs not to 2016, but perhaps to 2026.

But for me, at least, these are some of this Ingolstadt manufacturer's greatest strengths. Strengths that are embodied in the A3, which has just had a facelift that includes new en-gines, new technology, new styling.

Now there's a vast lineup of some 26 models in the A3 range, which fi rst debuted in South Africa almost two decades ago, rather unbeliev-ably, and which is available as a three-door Hatch, fi ve-door Sport-back, Cabriolet, and Sedan.

So in the short little bit of space I have here, we're just going to skim over some of the highlights, starting

with the new entry-level model, the three-cylinder 1.0 TFSI.

Yup, you can now have your A3 with the same motor found in the base A1, and it's a perky little mill making 85kW and 200Nm. That's enough to take you to 100km/h in 9.7 seconds, topping out at 206km/h. Claimed fuel consumption is just 4.5 litres per 100km.

At the other end of the scale, the understated S3 now bangs down 228kW and 400Nm from its turboed two-litre. This is noticeably up on the previous 206kW, and is thanks to Audi South Africa having convinced the Germans that ours is not an ultra-hot zone in the league of Dubai, and that the higher-output version will cope with our climate just fi ne.

It's a swift little sledgehammer this machine, with zero-to-100km/h coming up in 4.6 seconds for the Sportback and Sedan models, and 5.1 seconds for the Cabriolet. And with quattro drive to all four wheels via the new seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission (previously

a six-speeder), it's also a remarkably confi dence-inspiring car. Especially on the mountain passes my co-driver and I tackled on the recent launch outside Cape Town.

In the second quarter of next year expect the RS3 to hit our market. This promises outputs of 294kW and 480Nm, plus a zero-to-100km/h time of a mere 4.1 seconds. And while owning the halo model in any car range carries a certain cachet, the "normal" S3 is ample. More than am-ple for any conceivable application.

The stalwart 1.4 TFSI, mean-while, now boasts cylinder on de-mand (COD) technology, switching off two of the 110kW motor's four cylinders when power is not needed.

In manual guise claimed fuel con-sumption is just 4.5 litres per 100km.

The 140kW 2.0 TFSI engine has also been newly developed. Then there's the 105kW, 340Nm 2.0 TDI also with a claimed thirst of just 4.5 litres per 100km.

The A3 Hatchback, Sportback and Sedan will all be available in 1.0T

FSI, 1.4 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 2.0TDI, and S3 versions. The Cabriolet range is limited to the 2.0 TFSI, and S3 Cab-riolet.

Styling-wise upgrades are, of course, subtle, and include tail-light and headlight design changes, a re-designed grille, and integrated front bumper, while Matrix LED head-lights are an option.

As for the cockpit, well, I've long maintained that Audi has arguably the classiest, highest-quality interi-ors in the business, and for the fi rst time its excellent Virtual Cockpit, which debuted on the TT, is avail-able.

Infotainment, luxury, and con-nectivity levels are more honed than ever, of course, and while standard equipment is fairly comprehensive, as with all German luxury cars there is a long and tempting array of op-tional extras to choose from.

Subtle (although I think I might have said that already). Honed. And entirely appealing, from the base model up.

Friday, 25 November 2016 3Hyundai Tucson

By Gavin Foster

Hyundai's Tucson, sold under the ix35 alias between 2009

and 2016 has gained two new turbodiesel models along-side the existing fi ve petrol derivatives.

The less powerful of the two, the 1.7-litre Executive, delivers 85kW at 4,000rpm and 280Nm of thrust from 1,250rpm while the bigger version, the two-litre Elite, is good for 131kW at 4,000 and 400Nm of thrust from 1,750rpm. Both models de-liver the power to the front wheels via six-speed trans-missions - a manual for the smaller engine and an auto for the two-litre. With the existing two-litre naturally aspirated and 1.6-litre turbo petrol en-gines offering 115kW/196Nm and 130kW/265Nm respec-tively Hyundai should be able to cater for a wide range of needs - and pockets. There is not yet a 4x4 diesel model in South Africa though, which is a pity. Either engine should prove useful in the rough stuff.

I wrote about the new Tuc-son range in Autodealer in July this year, so won't bang on about airbags and climate control and everything else that comes in the box. This is about the diesel engines.

At the launch I drove the 1.7-litre Executive and thor-oughly enjoyed it, but the two-litre versions were stuck

in a bond store awaiting cus-toms clearance. The torque from just off idle in the 1.7 is very useful, and the six-speed manual transmission is crisp, with well-chosen ratios.

Hyundai makes no claims as to performance, but I see that testers elsewhere have record-ed 0-100km/h times of a 13,7 seconds and a top speed of around 175km/h. The wagon doesn't feel lethargic, though. I'd happily live with the car I drove, but the two litre version would doubtless be even bet-ter - at a price. The jump from R440,000 to R520,000 might just be a little too much, even with better spec and a more powerful engine.

The Tucson has always been a top seller against a lot of high quality rivals in a

hotly contested class, while earning an enviable reputa-tion for quality and reliability. If I were looking for a high-quality, good looking family soft-roader the Tucson in one form or another would be on my short list. Ideally, it would be a two-litre turbodiesel Elite in four-wheel-drive but that is not yet an option.

The Tucson comes with Hyundai's generous fi ve-year/150,000km general warranty and roadside as-sistance plan, as well as a new seven-year/200,000km drivetrain warranty and a fi ve-year/90,000km service plan. Service intervals are 15,000km for the rest of the range, but the 1.7 Executive turbodiesel needs to visit the dealer only every 30,000km.

Whether it's a trailer, boat, caravan or a broken-down car, towing should be done right to avoid damage to

your vehicle and accidents on our roads. Les Mc Master, Chairman of the Motor Indus-

try Workshop Association (MIWA), says the fi rst thing to ensure is that the trailer or caravan has been properly serviced by a competent person.

"During the service the following areas should receive special attention: brakes (if fi tted); electrical connections and components such as lights, cables etc; wheel bearings (these need to be greased if the trailer has been standing for a lengthy period); and tyres with emphasis on the tyre age i.e. cracks etc."

He adds that it also important to ensure you have the correct licence and what you are tow-ing falls within the legal requirements in terms of weight in relation to your vehicle.

"Many motorists don't realise that their drivers licence regulates what vehicle they can drive and what type of trailer they can pull. The AA pro-vides a break-down of license codes and the cor-responding trailer weight. It also explains how to calculate the trailer to car weight ratio. It is important that motorists don't attempt to tow an item that is too heavy for their vehicle," says Mc Master.

The cost of fuel and fuel consumption is also a factor to consider before heading off on holiday with a trailer, boat or caravan in tow. "Towing roughly halves your normal distance so be care-ful to plan your stops beforehand. It's also impor-tant to budget for the additional fuel you'll use when towing. You'll need to double your usual fuel expenditure," he advises.

Mc Master says that speeding is the number one cause of accidents when towing.

"Drivers need to be aware that the stopping distance is far longer when towing and allow for this."

He adds that passing heavy vehicles and vice versa creates a vortex which can affect the tow-ing combination stability.

"Ensure that you are not caught unawares. Do not use excessive braking when descending a steep descent as this may overheat the brakes on the units and lead to premature brake failure. Rather select a lower gear to assist with the brak-ing force and keep to the recommended speed limit."

He also encourages drivers who stop to assist a broken-down vehicle to ensure they use the correct equipment before attempting to tow the vehicle.

"Use only approved towing equipment such as towing bars and ropes. Be aware when using a rope that it will slacken on deceleration. By us-ing the correct rope you avoid the risk of the rope snapping on acceleration. A tow bar should be used if the towed vehicle's brakes are not work-ing.

“Be aware that the steering on the towed vehi-cle may be extremely heavy when the engine is not running so too are the brakes without vacuum assistance," he adds.

‘Use only approved towing equipment such as towing bars and ropes’

Not too long ago Mercedes' performance division, called AMG, set about creating the

world's most powerful 2.0-litre four-pot production motor the world has ever seen. Having done so they decid-ed the A series platform was the right home for it - the result of which was the A45, CLA45 and GLA45 AMG range.

This is the evolution of that combina-tion. The CLA has undergone a few mid-life tweaks which make it a nicer car, while that 2.0-litre turbocharged motor was poked with a slightly bigger stick to squeeze out even more power.

To my eye this is the best looking Mercedes on sale today (if you exclude the very expensive stuff from the equa-tion).

In my opinion the C Class sized ve-hicle has become too big, across the board, which means that everything above it is even worse. It's very diffi cult to make something of those dimensions look good. The CLA on the other hand is just right. The swooping coupe-esque roofl ine is marvelous, as is everything

AT a smidge over R830,000 before options the CLA is anything but cheap on paper, especially when you consider that it's based on a hatchback (it does however have a decent sized boot in CLA format). Competitors are few and far between, but BMW's recently launched M2 is probably just that. Audi does an S3 which looks rather good and is less expensive, but has a lot less power as well.

IF it came down to picking the CLA45 AMG on drivability alone, I think I'd go elsewhere. It's just not nimble enough to be considered a sporty drive. But on all other factors I think it's winning the race against the competition.

It looks great, is a lovely place to sit and gets off the line like a scalded cat.

underneath it. The AMG treatment, which the odd

fl are and bulge, little wing, rear diffuser and new bumpers round the CLA off very nicely indeed.

On the inside Mercedes made a few changes over the previous CLA too. New

seat covers and trim parts, as well as chrome-plated controls kick things off. The highlight though is a much slimmer-looking freestanding 8-inch media dis-play with a glass cover. T

he dials also had a makeover and now sport red needles. Merc cabins are a very

nice place to be these days, it must be said.

On the right track it seems, so how does it go?

Well with 280kW and 475 torques it's a surprise the thing doesn't actually take off. The 100km/h sprint is dealt with in a swift 4.3 seconds thanks to the AMG all-wheel drive system and launch control. The seven speed DCT 'box shifts quick-ly, but struggles to get off the line briskly enough without launch control engaged in my opinion.

The raw power on offer here makes the car feel more like a muscle car than a sports car - and to an extent that extends to the way it handles corners.

The numb steering and only on-demand AWD system means the Merc doesn't feel alive when driving in a spirited manner. That said it does offer impressive grip levels and of course the sooner you get it in a straight line the sooner you can unleash that mountain of power.

In fact it's really in wet conditions that the Merc really shows its mettle - you're really able to get the power down effi -ciently which makes the CLA near un-touchable when it's slippery.

‘The raw power on offer here makes the car feel more like a muscle car than a sports car’

Education is a vital key to uplifting communi-ties from poverty. However, due to the risingcosts of education and some parents comingfrom poor backgrounds, they are unable to af-ford a sound education for their children. Helping Hands 786 was established with theaim of assisting underprivileged communitiesin making sure orphaned children’s educa-tional needs are seen too.

The organisation was established in Februaryafter they had a braai for orphaned and saw aneed to help them with more than just gifts, but with something that is going to add valueto their lives.

The group embarked on an exciting andmuch-needed school stationery pack drive tohelp the underprivileged and orphaned chil-

dren. “Let us reach out a helping hand to up-lift them and give them a chance to helpthem,” said chairman, Hawa Bibi Amod.As the 2017 new school year approaches, theorganisation aims to provide 500 pupils withstationery packs at only R100 a pack.

“That’s less than the cost of one eating a mealor a visit to the movies. Together, we can andwe will make a difference,” said Hawa. She added, “The reason for the stationarydrive is to assist pupils with stationary anduniforms during January.”

The organisation is still looking for more vol-unteers and sponsorships from the commu-nity. Those willing to volunteer or sponsor, can contact Hawa Bibi Amod on 082-825-3932.

School pupils saw their self-built electric carscome to life as they raced in the Greenpow-erZA Electric Car Challenge at Red Star Race-way, recently. GreenpowerZA enables pupils to design, buildand race a single seater electric car. Greenpow-erZA uses the excitement of motorsport to in-spire pupils from primary school through tohigh school to excel in the subject areas of Sci-ence, Technology, Engineering and Mathemat-ics (STEM).Various schools including Hoër TegnieseSkool Pretoria Tuine, Ingqayizivele HighSchool, Hoërskool Schoonspruit, Isekelo Pri-mary School and Laerskool Louis Leipoldt par-ticipated in the GreenpowerZA challenge. Two schools, one high school and one primaryschool, walked away with the winning trophies.Hoërskool Schoonspruit was crowned winnersof the Formula 24 endurance race. The teamshad to cover a maximum distance in 90 minutesusing one 12volt battery. Hoër Tegniese Skool Pretoria Tuine took thelead in the first 35 minutes of the race but the

learners from Hoërskool Schoonspruit under-stood that the race is not about who is thefastest but rather who drives the most laps in90 minutes.

Thus pupils had to integrate science and math-ematics in order to get the most out of their bat-teries. Laerskool Louis Leipoldt is the winnersof the first ever Goblin race held on Africansoil. The Goblin race consists of three activitiesincluding speed racing (a race at the highestrunning speed), drag racing (an accelerationcontest over a distance of 80m) and the slalomrace (a race that follows a zigzag course).

The GreenpowerZA challenge is a fantastic, practical learning experience, making STEM areality in learners’ lives while having fun.For more information regarding the Greenpow-erZA Electric Car Challenge and how to getyour school signed up for the 2017 race, con-tact them at [email protected]: Lawrence Jugmohan of Digital StreetSA

Sonu Nigam and Atif Aslam are two excep-tional powerhouses when it comes to the artof singing and their latest live performancewill give you goose bumps, leaving you cap-tivated. The two stars unite to perform for thefirst time together on one stage at the Dur-ban ICC on Saturday, December 3 at7.30pm and in Johannesburg at SandtonConvention Centre on Sunday, December 4,at 6pm.Neither Nigam nor Aslam are new to SA –both have headlined several concerts in Dur-ban and Johannesburg over the past fewyears, but this is the first time they will sharethe stage. One of the highlights of the show, includes Sonuʼs orchestra and Atif Aslamʼsmusicians . The show would include atroupe of more than 50aArtists – which willinclude international musicians, dancers anda technical crew. A singer, composer andactor, Sonu Nigam, gave his first public per-formance at the age of four. At 18, he begantraining with classical maestro Ustad GhulamMustafa Khan and moved to Mumbai to tryhis luck in Bollywood. Sonu finally foundfame with the song Sandese Aate Hain fromthe 1997 war drama, ʻBorderʼ. He began bysinging covers of Mohamed Rafi, mainly fromthe album "Rafi Ki Yaadein" released by T-Series. T-Series promoter Gulshan Kumargave him a chance to reach a larger audi-ence. In these years Nigam's singing stylewas regarded by some to be a ʻRafi clone.ʼ Thirty-three-year-old Atif Aslam started out

wanting to be a cricketer, but went on to be-come one of the most distinguished musi-cians in his country. In 2013, Indian musicstreaming service Saavn portrayed him themost popular artist of the year, followed byArijit Singh, AR ¬Rahman, Shreya Ghoshaland Mohit Chauhan. His song, ʻAadat,ʼrecorded and released in 2004, went in-sanely viral and made Aslam an overnightsensation. His first solo album, Jal Pari wasreleased shortly thereafter, and some songsfrom the album instantly became popularboth across the border and at home. Bolly-wood director, Mahesh Bhatt, took noticeand immediately got Aslam to sing a versionof one of the most popular tracks, WohLamhe, for his 2005 movie ʻZeher.ʼ It was ahit and Aslam secured his place in Bolly-wood. Both Sonu and Atif have stated in pastinterviews that the reason behind the musicis not for fame nor money. Itʼs what trulybrings happiness to not only their life as wellas others. Sonu and Atif pay tribute to Godfor their blessings, which is the gift of movingpeopleʼs hearts with their music. They bothset an example for the young aspiring artistsout there. No matter what trials you face inlife, with hard work, motivation and dedica-tion, dreams do come true. These two in theirown right have started looking for future tal-ents on shows such as Indian Idols etc.December 3rd will be one of the most treas-ured evenings of the year for Bollywood fansas South Africans for the first time will expe-
