Recreation Supervisors Message
We are very fortunate to live in a community that offers numerous programs and amenities for you and your family to stay active and engaged. Recognizing that leisure activities, facilities, parks and green spaces are essential to our quality of life, to the environment and our economic sustainability we conducted a survey to help determine the long term strategy of recreation and leisure in South Frontenac. With over 700 responses, you helped to guide the work that our Recreation Committees, community and staff are doing to improve our existing amenities and create new recreation and leisure spaces. I continue to encourage you to get involved in your community and keep an eye on our website for information about new initiatives, pro grams and events.
Sincerely, Tim Laprade Arena/Recreation Supervisor (613) 376-3027 Ext 2231

lake before connecting with the K & P trail just east of Harrowsmith. It continues westward, past Harrowsmith and ends in Strathcona. Its surface consists, in part, of stone dust between Loughborough-Portland Boundary Road and Harrowsmith plus a small section west of Hogan Road. The remainder is loose gravel more suitable to cyclists on a mountain or hybrid bike. The eastern section provides the best vista because of the numbers of ponds and small lakes in a very natural environment. Information – Cataraquitrail.ca
K & P Trail - This trail originates from Kingston and enters South Frontenac at Orser Road. It merges with the Cataraqui Trail just east of Harrowsmith for about two km then splits to go north up to Tichborne for a total of 40 kilometres. It will eventually reach Sharbot Lake. Its surface consists of mostly stone dust suitable for most bikes and is relatively flat. Because it is mainly going parallel to Highway 38. it is easily accessible in many areas and is close to facilities along the route. Information – A virtual tour, with photos of 80 locations along the trail between Orser Road and the point where the trail leaves South Frontenac at Tichborne, can be found at frontenacmaps.ca/tour/#
Rideau Trail - This hiking rail which links Kingston to Ottawa, meanders across South Frontenac from south to northeast east for about 80 Km. It enters South
Frontenac via the K & P Trail then joins the Cataraqui Trail, heading east to Sydenham before jogging north towards Knowlton Lake and the Gould Lake Conservation Area. After passing Frontenac Park and Perth Road it crosses the Cataraqui Trail again twice, going east then north before exiting the township at Bedford Mills. It is accessible from many points and provides a very good view of the natural forest habitat within the township. Ideal for active people who want to stay fit. The Rideau Trail Association organizes excursions throughout the year for members. Information – rideautrail.org/discover-the-trail/maps includes 19 downloadable maps of the Rideau Trail between Kingston and Ottawa. Maps 1 through 5 go through South Frontenac.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTEOur Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 2491 Keeley Road, across from the Public Works yard has now been open for business for 6 years and we are extremely proud of our residents for their continued support. To date we had diverted over 400 tonnes of hazardous materials that would have otherwise been going to our landfills. There is no charge for our residents and a full listing of acceptable items may be found on our website at Solid Waste/Recycling/Household Hazardous Waste. The depot is open May 1st to October 31st every Thursday from 3pm – 8 pm. During the winter the depot hours are every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 3pm – 7 pm.
2017 COMMUNAL GARBAGE BIN & RECYCLE STATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAMAlong with the many lanes in our Township comes the problem of the accumulation of garbage on collection days. We have found that with properly maintained collection boxes, there is a considerable reduction of litter due to wildlife, weather, etc. Many residents and lane associations have taken advantage of this program since its inception in 2008 and find that having a communal area for collection is an advantage to all concerned. The Township has committed to providing 50% of the total cost of the bins and/or recycle stations and to prepare suitable areas for installation. Applications may be found on our website under Solid Waste/Garbage/Communal Bins.
2017 PRIvATE LANE UPGRADING ASSISTANCE PROGRAMThe objective of this assistance program is to improve access on lanes for emergency vehicles. The Roads and Lane Standards Policy outlines the minimum requirements for private lanes. The Township has committed to provide assistance once again in 2017. This funding is not retro-active and will apply only to applications received for work completed in 2017. Applications and requirements may be found on our website under Roads and Parking. The deadline for applications is June 9th, 2017.

Here in the Township of South Frontenac we take pride in our clean waterways, parks, trails and roads. Whether you are a year round or summer resident, a visitor or a cottage renter, weekly garbage and recycle collection is available throughout the Township. Collection days for Township roads and lane entrances can be found on our website under Solid Waste/Garbage/Collection Information. There you may also find a Recycle Calendar to inform you of the proper weeks that various recycle items are to be put out in your blue box.
The Township has a ‘Bag Tag’ system in place whereas every
bag of garbage put out for collection must have a complete Township of South Frontenac tag affixed around the neck of the bag. Bags must be correctly tagged and be under the maximum allowance of 20 kg/44 lbs to be collected. Please refer to the back side of the tag sheets for proper instructions. A total of 50 tags are sent out to each property owner in the March tax bill each year. These tags are for the property and should remain with the dwelling in the case of renters, visitors or change in ownership, along with proper instruction on waste collection. If you have not received your tax bill package by the end of March, please contact the tax office at Town Hall. Additional tags are available for $2.00 each and may be purchased at either Township office as well as numerous stores in the area. A list of authorized stores selling tags is available on our website at Solid Waste/Garbage/Bag Tags.

Pitch-In Canada is dedicated to the preservation and sustainable growth of our natural ecosystems and communities. The organization represents hard working Canadian volunteers and consumers who care about making environmental change in their communities nation-wide for future generations. Choosing not to litter should be a decision we all make yet after the snow recedes for the year, the ditches and treelines show an abundance of litter that is hard to ignore. Our strong winds are certainly a culprit for spreading much of it, yet the appearance of items such as water bottles, coffee cups and fast food debris have a distinctive human touch.
Most people are steadfast in keeping the areas around their homes litter free, yet this one week a year gives us a chance to join together, expand our areas and set an example to others that we truly care about the beauty and safety of our environment.
With over 1600 Kilometers of roads in our Township, we need you! Think of the cumulative effort if every resident picks up even one bag of garbage! Grab your friends, family members, neighbors, or club members and organize a day of helping the Earth!
Designated Pitch-In bags will be available from either Township office or any store that currently sells bag tags as of April 10th. Then, during the week of April 24th the bags will either be picked up on your regular collection day or special arrangements can be made with the Township for pick up.

is you.Enhance, Conserve & Protect Our Environment

OPP offer up these tips for remaing safe on the water during boating seasonPersonal floatation device - If you don’t wear it, it won’t work. Examine PFD’s and lifejackets for wear and tear and identify those that need replacing. If you have inflatable PFD’s be sure to be familiar with their operating instructions.Don’t drink & boat - It is unacceptable to drink and drive a motor vehicle and the same holds true for drinking and boat-ing. If you are caught operating a
vessel while impaired you will also lose your ability to operate your motor vehicle.Check your Boat - Familiarize yourself with the boat you are operating. Check the con-dition of your vessel and ensure it is properly prepared for the boating season.Be prepared - Mechanical breakdowns account for a significant number of calls for assistance to the Ontario Provincial Police. Most of these embarrassing incidents are preventable. by ensuring yuour vessel
is serviceable, and you have sufficient gas. It happens very quickly and you don’t always have time to react. A prudent skipper always discusses his or her plans with a family member before they set out. For more information on boating practices in Ontario please visit the O.P.P. website at www.opp.ca or contact your local O.P.P. Detachment.
A BOATING MESSAGE FROM THE OPP
As we enter into spring all residents are cautioned on ice conditions, and are reminded to check ice conditions before venturing out. Please keep children away from fast moving water in ditches and off the ice. Remember to ensure lanes and driveways are kept clear and maintained to the standard of 15 feet wide and 15 feet high to enable efficient response to emergencies. The fire season begins April 1st, which means all open air burning will require approval and adherence to the
burning by-law. This also applies to camp fires, which you CANNOT have during a TOTAL BURNING BAN. Campfires cannot exceed 2 feet x 2 feet, cannot be left unattended and must only burn wood. Remember to check batteries in your smoke and CO alarms including trailers.Practice home escape plans with children. For more information please contact the office of the Fire Chief at 613-376-3027 ext. 2234
