Flocculation test

By simulating the flocculation in a small cup it is possible to find the correct dosage of flocculent chemical and to get a preview of how the process will work in a small scale. The Marinfloc test kit (part number LP-001-0001500), shown in picture 10, contains all necessary items for testing the flocculation and measuring the pH-value.

Fill a 500 ml cup with bilge water.

1. Add one drop of the flocculent chemical (see picture 8) to the sample. Stir the sample, let it stand unaffected for a minute and observe the settling. 1 drop is approximately equivalent to 100 PPM, (parts per million) in a 500 ml sample.

2. Increase the dosage by adding more drops of flocculent chemical to find the optimal dosage, which is characterized by a, separated, clear water phase, and a phase of flocks. Do not use more flocculent chemical than necessary to avoid the risk of over dosage and to save costs. The dosage is normally 300-400 PPM, which is equivalent to 0,3-0,4 litres/m3. If the sample is taken from non-aerated bilge water the flocks will settle to the bottom. However, if the sample is taken from the test cock (80) after the circulation tank during normal operation the flocks will float due to the air addition in this tank.

In a good flocculation the flocks have formed and started to settle towards the bottom of the cup after a minute (see picture 9). A good size of a flock is between 2- 5mm and after approximately 15 minutes the sample should look like in picture 9. If the flocks not are present, too small or do not settle, add one additional drop of the flocculent chemical in the same matter as in 3. Try to find the optimal concentration of flocculent chemical and settling time by this drop wise addition. Repeat the test to get a mean value of the optimal addition of flocculent chemical and use it in the system.
