WINTER | 2005

This issue of our quarterly newsletter marks the end of an era, the

beginning of a new year, a new focus and great new opportunities. With

the experience of 17 years at the BDB, I am looking forward to working

with our business partners and excited about the challenges ahead.

This is a year of transition and promise for this

organization. My plan is to focus on strengthening

relationships, building new ones and communicating

with all of Palm Beach County municipalities,

chambers, agencies and business leaders.

It is time to move forward in building on the positive side

of Scripps, showcasing the existing BioScience Industry

in this county and South Florida to attract and build the

cluster. In addition, it is time to refocus on the other

growing industries in Palm Beach County, building on

their strengths and opportunities and identifying ways to

assist them on capitalizing on the BioScience Sector.

On February 1, the BDB launched our annual

membership campaign, our new image and branding

strategies. The BDB has an exciting new energy with

our current and many new board members that will be

a great support and benefit to this organization.

Beginnings are always challenging and exciting

and we look forward to a new year filled with

stronger partnerships, commitment and hard work

focused on building upon the strength’s of Palm Beach

County’s economy.

Key To Agency’s Success

StrategicDiscipline

Is there really a connection between award-winning advertising

and bottom-line growth in market share and profits? FCEdge,

a marketing, advertising and public relations company

headquartered in Stuart, has been making the connection for

its clients since 1990, during which time the agency has won

an impressive 500-plus awards for originality and excellence

in regional, national and international creative competitions.

(L-R): FCEdge partners Michael Visconte,Tina Luce & Jason Mazzota at work in thecreative department.

04 The BDB Prospector | Winter 2005

Strategic Discipline

Tina Luce, president and one of three

FCEdge partners, maintains that the

secret lies in developing a comprehensive

marketing strategy that meshes with the

client’s business plan, then having the

discipline to require that all creative

concepts follow the strategic direction.

“That sounds simple and obvious

enough,” she says. “But it is an intense,

ongoing process that starts with gaining

a thorough understanding a client’s

business, industry and markets from the

inside out, creating a brand identity that

reflects their core values and benefit

propositions, then projecting and

reinforcing those brand messages in

the concepts, graphics and text of every

facet of their messaging - print and

electronic advertising, press releases and

newsletters, brochures and billboards,

website and signage - the entire marketing

communications spectrum.”

According to Susan Murphy, director of

new business development for the agency,

this is the essence of integrated marketing

and something the agency believes so

strongly in that it has developed a

proprietary methodology call BrandPrintSM

to assure that everything the agency

does for its clients is on target.

“Our BrandPrintSM

approach is a

comprehensive blueprint that enables

us to build campaigns that are unique

to each client, yet contain the elements

in common that we have learned are

critical to replicating successful results,”

Murphy maintains. “It reflects and

formalizes the knowledge we have

acquired over our careers about the

importance of brand-building.”

Those careers include impressive

credentials and accomplishments.

FCEdge’s senior team members all had

major-agency backgrounds and each had

then successfully built his or her own

agency before joining forces.

Luce, who heads the account service

team and has executive responsibility

for the on-time, on-budget completion

of all projects, has 25 years’ experience

in agency management, account

management and media planning.

She has planned and executed regional,

national and international media

campaigns for

clients as diverse

as Buick Motor

Division and

GMC Truck

Division of

General Motors,

the New Mexico

Division of

Economic

Development

and Tourism,

numerous country

club developments

and destination/

hospitality

accounts, and a

major biomedical

manufacturing corporation.

Michael Visconte, agency partner and

creative director, was a senior art director

at Stanton and Hucko, a division of

Young & Rubicam, before moving to

Florida from New York. His two decades

in advertising include work on accounts

such as Eastman Kodak, Bausch &

Lomb, Xerox, Goodyear and Weight

Watchers International.

Jason Mazzota, the partner who heads

FCEdge’s interactive technologies and

new media marketing team has 16 years

experience as a creative director and

designer, including work on accounts

such as Canon, QTV North American

Philips. For one of FCEdge’s major

clients that does business in Europe and

the Pacific Rim as well as North

America, he developed what the agency

calls Global Digital Management.

“We contacted a major manufacturer

of offset presses and the developer of

a state-of-the-art digital prepress

application, proposed an alliance, then

together recruited large print houses

around the world that used the presses

and software,” Mazzota explains. “This

gives us the capability to send electronic

files to locally sourced printers

almost anywhere in the world with

the assurance of absolute consistency

of quality and color values, something

previously not possible.”

According to Mazzota, the advantages

to clients that conduct international

operations through distributor networks

include the ability to do simultaneous

worldwide product introduction

campaigns without the long lead times

and expenses necessitated by printing

and shipping from a centralized location

and avoiding the need to clear printed

materials through customs, while

maintaining central control of graphics

and message content. “Before, the choice

was either to get it all done here and ship

it around the world or to trust corporate

graphic standards and collateral materials

to your client’s distributors and the local

production resources they selected,”

Strategic Discipline

Mazzota continues. “Now we can offer a much better

option, which as far as I’m concerned personally is the

ulcer-free alternative.”

FCEdge combines that kind of insight and expertise in

digital marketing with comprehensive expertise in traditional

marketing communications, demonstrated by the agency’s work

for Implant Innovations Inc., better known as 3i.

Since winning the dental prosthetics account in 1999, the

agency has developed corporate graphic standards that have

brought consistency to ads and

collateral for diverse product lines,

redesigned their tradeshow displays

for more impact, created ad and

collateral campaigns for one existing

and four new product lines, developed

the industry’s first cohesive marketing

program that presents their products

together as a complete treatment

system, and pioneered a cooperative

practice-to-consumer marketing

program for 3i customers.

FCEdge has also put 3i at the

forefront of interactive marketing communications. The agency

has converted 3i’s corporate newsletter from print to electronic

format, with email dissemination, which has lowered production

and distribution costs while increasing the impact. FCEdge has

also created Rich Text Format email “Flashmercials” that are

coordinated with traditional direct mail campaigns for improved

effectiveness. The agency has created CD-ROM and DVD

product presentations

for 3i and developed

ecademy, a web-based

interactive distance

learning program that

enables both 3i

representatives and

clinicians to familiarize

themselves with 3i

products and protocols by performing virtual surgical and

restorative procedures at their computers.

While FCEdge is justifiably proud of what it has accomplished

for clients like 3i, which were already industry leaders, the

agency takes great satisfaction in helping other clients “break

out of the pack” and achieve leadership status, according to

Michael Visconte. “We have been privileged to work with

several already well-established clients and take them to a

higher level,” he says. “But helping to grow companies into

industry leaders is equally satisfying.”

Visconte cites Orlando-based ADS Telecom, which started as a

local franchise for a business telephone sales and service company.

The partners decided to go out on their own and contacted

FCEdge based on work the agency was doing for a national

systems integration company. FCEdge developed a new name and

branding to support their migration into computer-telephony

integration (CTI), then developed a replicable marketing plan to

introduce

ADS Telecom

to new

markets. Over

the next five

years, ADS

Telecom

expanded to

become

Florida’s

dominant

CTI provider,

with offices in

Tampa,

Jacksonville and South Florida as well as Orlando. With the

recent opening of their Atlanta office ADS Telecom is poised to

become one of the southeast’s leading CTI corporations.

Mazzota points to Redington tackle as his favorite agency

success story. “When we started with Redington, it was

manufacturing and wholesaling entry-level rods and reels solely

for the U.S. market,” he recalls. “We created a retail-oriented

corporate identity and produced retail catalogs, packaging and

point-of-sales materials for them. We developed the marketing

solutions they needed to roll out a higher-priced line and to sell

their products internationally. We created European, Latin

American and Australian advertising campaigns. Shortly after

we completed their 2001 catalog, they achieved their goal of

being purchased by a major manufacturer, Orvis. It doesn’t get

any better than that.”

And for South Florida businesses looking to make their mark in

the world, the marketing know-how they need doesn’t get any

better (or closer) than FCEdge. P

help determine a business’ value for tax purposes as well as in

the event of a sale, merger or acquisition.

structuring the expansion of an existing business or creating

an exit strategy for entrepreneurs wanting to retire or sell

their businesses, Cass, Levy & Leone provides expert advice.
