Letter from the President

Greetings and a warm welcome to beautiful Kirkland, Washington…home of our 17th Annual American Im-pressionist Society National Juried Exhibition, hosted by Howard/Mandville Gallery. This year’s exhibition fea-tures 140 juried works from our members as well as works from our AIS Masters, Founders and Officers, for a total of 160 paintings. This is an exceptional collection of some of the finest Impressionist paintings available today. Sincere congratulations to this year’s juried artists for their outstanding achievement in being selected for this prestigious exhibition.

The American Impressionist Society was founded in 1998 by Florida artists William Schultz, Charlotte Dickinson, and Marjorie Bradley of Vero Beach, and Pauline Ney, of Ellenton. Their goal was, and our goal continues to be, to promote the appreciation of American Impressionism and to provide artists working in the Impressionist genre with exhibition, educational and networking opportunities. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Membership in AIS is open to American Impressionist artists who are legal U.S. residents or U.S. citizens living abroad and anyone who would like to support AIS as a supporting member or patron. Please visit our website, www.americanimpressionistsociety.org or our Facebook page to stay up to date on the lat-est events and opportunities. You will find more information about membership on our website and also on the inside back page of this catalog.

Putting together an exhibition of this caliber takes an extraordinary amount of time and hard work, and we would personally like to thank everyone who has had a part in this year’s show. From Pat and Dan Howard, owners of Howard/Mandville Gallery and their wonderful staff, Luanne and Toni, to all of our generous spon-sors, all of our volunteers, our members and donors, all who submitted work for jurying this year, the jury panel, our esteemed AIS Masters, our judge of awards and workshop instructor Calvin Liang (AISM), our AIS Board, Founders, and our officers, Vice President Cheryl St. John, Show Chair Kathryn Riedinger, Educational Program Director Vanessa Rothe, and Social Media Coordinator Becky Joy, sincere thanks to you all. And special thanks to the City of Kirkland for their wonderful hospitality, for promoting our event and for making us feel right at home! This show would not be possible without each and every one of you. Thank you for your time, your hard work and your dedication to AIS.

Finally, it’s our pleasure to invite you to enjoy the beautiful collection of Impressionist works of art in this cata-log. We encourage you to contact Howard/Mandville Gallery when you find one that speaks to your heart. On behalf of our Board, Officers, founder Charlotte Dickinson, Chairman Emeritus T.R. Dickinson and Co-founder Pauline Ney, thank you so much for your support of American Impressionism and the American Impressionist Society, Inc.

Warmest wishes,

Debra Joy Groesser, AIS CEO/PresidentDon Groesser, AIS National Treasurer

Juror of Awards

Calvin Liang Bio, AISM

Calvin Liang was born in Canton, China. He began painting in high school and completed

his art education at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, recognized as one of China’s most

prestigious and competitive art academies. In China, his skills as a fine artist were applied

to the theatrical industry where he designed and created sets for operas and musical dramas

for the Canton Opera Institute. Liang moved to the United States in 1987 and continued

his profession as a full-time artist. He had a long and successful career creating visual art

for the entertainment industry in animation, which included the Walt Disney Studios and

Nickelodeon Studio where he worked for the Little Mermaid and Spongebob Squarepants.

However he decided to quit working for the studios to pursue a full-time career as a fine art-

ist, painting themes of his choosing. Since leaving his animation career in early 2002, Liang

has definitely been noticed. His accomplishments include winning several top awards in

important exhibitions including Edgar Payne Award for Best Landscape in California Art Club

104th Annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition 2015, Artist Award in Masters of the American

West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale 2015, Juror’s Best of Show-38th Annual C.M. Russell 2006,

“Art-Talk Award of Excellence” Oil Painters of America Juried Exhibition 2005, “People’s

Choice Award” 6th Annual Laguna Plein Air Painting Event in Bowers Museum 2002, “Best of

the Show” American Impressionist Society’s 4th Annual Juried Exhibition 2002, thus assuring

his position as one of the nation’s leading artist. National art magazines also took notice. In

2004, Liang’s work graced the cover of Art of the West’s special 16th Anniversary Edition; and

in 2006, 2007, and 2008 three years he had a full feature article in American Art Collector

Magazine. Also he received a full feature article in Southwest Magazine in 2005, American

Artist Magazine in 2005, American Artist Workshop Magazine in 2007, and American Artist

Magazine in 2010. Again, he had a full feature article in Art of the West Magazine in 2012 and

2014. In 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 he was selected into the Masters of the American West

Fine Art Exhibition and Sale, which was at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles.

Calvin Liang is a Master Member of Oil Painters of America and American Impressionist Soci-

ety, and a Signature Member of California Art Club and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.

“The quality of the painting is very important. The com-position is a highly regarded element in the painting process. The ideas behind it can be very creative, but the painting itself has to be up to par. I appreciate quality of color, brushwork, texture, strong shape, and wonderful edges. And the best painting has all of those elements as well as unity in its visual dia-log to connect to the viewer, and it doesn’t matter what kind of subject, and what style it is.” – Calvin

Letter from the Vice President

A warm welcome to all AIS members and to all attendees of the American Impressionist Society’s 17th Annual National Juried Exhibition held at Howard/Mandville Gallery in Kirkland, Washington.

This year’s show is nothing short of outstanding! The caliber of artists, the creativity shown and of course the impressionistic style shines through like never before. If you are fortunate enough to be at the exhibit, take the time and enjoy each and every painting in the show, there’s always something to learn and appre-ciate. If you weren’t able to attend this year, I hope this catalog will suffice in bringing you the quality and beauty of each and every painting and if you happen to fall in love with one of these beautiful paintings, be sure and contact Howard/Mandville Gallery to add it to your collection.

A big thank goes to Calvin Liang, AISM, for taking on the challenging task of judging this year’s show and for teaching a fabulous workshop. We all appreciate your time and your talent!

I also want to thank our President, Debra Joy Groesser, for making AIS what it is today, Kathryn Reidinger, Show Chair, for all of her countless hours organizing volunteers, contacting sponsors and everything else that goes into putting on a successful show! Also, a very special thank you to our sponsors, Howard/ Mandville Gallery and staff and our volunteers for their precious time and efforts!

Most importantly, congratulations to all of the artists whose work was selected for this year’s show. You should all be very proud of yourselves and your achievement. The jury process, as always, was very com-petitive with over 1300 entries from very skilled and accomplished professionals so if you’re in the show, give yourself a pat on the back!

Enjoy the show!!

Warmest wishes,

Cheryl St. John Vice President

Welcome to Kirkland, Washington and the American Impressionist Society’s 17th National Juried Exhibition hosted by the beautiful Howard/Mandville Gallery. I would like to extend a special thanks to the owners, Pat and Dan Howard, and their wonderful staff, Luanne and Toni who have gone out of their way to make this a very special event.

Many thanks go out our tireless volunteers, who have worked many hours behind the scenes securing merchandise awards and who will be helping during the wonderful week we have planned beginning September 26th. This includes our AIS President, Debra Groesser and Vice-President, Cheryl St. John who have helped me organize this event every step of the way for the past year - and have been a pleasure to work with! They have spent countless hours to make AIS the organization it is today, representing the finest painters in the country.

This show couldn’t happen without the generous donation and sponsorship by our publication partners, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, Plein Air Magazine and Southwest Art. In addition we have so many incredible companies sponsoring awards this year - over $60,000 will be awarded at the opening, Thursday, September 29th. We hope you will attend and take advantage of the all the activities: Calvin Li-ang workshop, museum tour, lectures, demonstration by Calvin, cocktail parties and all-member paintout. Please see details on our website.

In closing, this show wouldn’t happen without YOU, our wonderful and talented members - you should be proud of your accomplishment. It’s an incredible exhibition which will be judged by Calvin Liang, AISM on the 29th. Calvin will also select the winners of many of the merchandise and publication awards. Of, course, your vote will choose an Artist’s Choice Award of Excellence again this year.

Hope to see many of you in September!

Kind Regards,

Kathryn Riedinger AIS Show Chair

In Memoriam

We were deeply saddened at the news of the passing of AIS Co-

founder, Marjorie L. Bradley, on February 11, 2016, in Vero Beach,

Florida, at the age of 82.

In tribute to Marjorie, Founder Charlotte Dickinson and Co-Found-

er Pauline Ney recalled the role that their dear friend Marjorie

(Marge) played in the formation of and the legacy of the Ameri-

can Impressionist Society. Marge was a very special person who

worked diligently and non-stop for AIS. Marjorie was an unsung

heroine of AIS from the day of the first AIS meeting in 1998. Co-

founder Pauline Ney still has the handwritten minutes she took

at that meeting. Marge served as AIS Secretary and as a board

member for many years. Marge also created the original AIS logo.

Pauline still has her original drawing of the logo on file. Marge

never asked for nor received credit for her work from anyone but

her close friends. Before the birth of AIS, Marge worked tirelessly

for years organizing and producing workshops in Florida and

throughout the country for William (Bill) Schultz, who was the

inspiration for AIS. She was his right hand. Marge was a talented

and accomplished artist – kind, gentle, and fun-loving. She al-

ways had a smile on her face and something happy to talk about.

She offered compassion, empathy and friendship to everyone she

knew. Marge will be greatly missed.

Marjorie L. Bradley, Co-Founder, Memorial Award of Excellence

Pauline S. Ney, Co-Founder of the American Impressionist Society, has generously donated $3,000 in

memory of her dear friend, Marjorie L. Bradley, also a co-founder of AIS. This donation will fund the

Marjorie L. Bradley, Co-Founder, Memorial Award of Excellence, a $500 award to be given at the AIS

National Juried Exhibition each of the next six years.

Marjorie was born in Nantucket, Massachusetts on August 17th 1933 and has resided in Vero Beach

the last 60 years. She was a homemaker and professional artist. She served in the U.S. Navy during

1951-1953 at Great Lakes Naval Training in Illinois. She was a previous member of the Indian River

County Garden Cub. She was the founder and director of the “Artists Guild Gallery of Vero Beach” and the

co-founder and director of the American Impressionist Society which started in 1998 and has grown to a

national organization of many professional artists.

Marjorie is survived by her sons John and Jim Bradley, daughter Carolyn, three grandchildren, six great

grandchildren as well as a sister and a brother and many friends.

Our Mission StatementIn 1998, Florida artists William Schultz, Charlotte Dickinson, Marjorie Bradley and Pauline Ney founded the American Impressionist Society, Inc. (AIS). Their goal: “To promote the ap-preciation of American Impressionism through exhibitions, workshops and other media.”

MembershipMembership is open to American Impressionist artists who are legal United States residents, US citizens living abroad, or anyone who would like to support American Impressionism.

Associate MembersOpen to all levels. You may join by mailing the completed membership form below with a check for annual dues of $60 ($50 if paid prior to Jan. 31st). You may also join online by going to the “Join” page on the AIS website, www.americanimpressionistsociety.org. AIS Associate Members in good standing may enter the AIS National Juried exhibition (additional entry fee required).

Signature MembersAssociate Members who have completed three consecutive years as an AIS Associate Member, AND who have been accepted into three AIS National Juried Exhibitions, may apply for Signature status when renewing membership in January each year. Our Signature Members have earned their titles by showing exceptional impressionistic fine art. Signature Members in good standing may enter AIS National Juried Exhibitions (additional entry fee required), state “AIS” after name, be listed on the AIS website and other promotional materials. Signature status is maintained with annual membership dues of $60 ($50 if paid prior to Jan. 31st).

Master ArtistsMasters are invited by the AIS Board of Directors and may sign “AISM” after their name. Masters are selected carefully and are considered to be leaders in the art community. Nationally known, they epitomize the highest level of impressionism and passionately give back to the society by sharing their knowledge.
