My Research Interest

• How can we best represent people and their behaviours in OR type simulation models?

• Combining ideas from OR Simulation and Social Simulation

• Applying academic knowledge to real world projects

Case Study (For more details see Siebers et al 2011)

Modelling the Cargo Screening Process

at the Ferry Port in Calais

Horizon 2020: Secure Societies 4

Context

Horizon 2020: Secure Societies 5

• Location: Calais Ferry Port (France)

• Problem: Illegal immigration

• 900.000 lorries/year

• 3500 positive lorries ~ 0.4%

6

Context

• Two key stake holders with different interests involved in the decision processes concerning the port operation – Port Operators

• Service providers and as such interested in a smooth flow of port operations as they have to provide certain service standards

– Border Agencies

• Represent national security interests that need to be considered; checks have to be conducted to detect threats; in Calais the biggest problem are stowaways

• Cost is another important factor – Security checks require expensive equipment and well trained staff
