Doordarshan is planning to launch DD International to project India’s voice globally on significant domestic and global issues.

Doordarshan’s parent body, Prasar Bharati, had floated a draft Expression of Interest (EoI) for the same on May 13th inviting comments from private players.

The EOI stated that the channel will present India’s point of view on contemporary issues of both global and domestic significance.

AIR INDIA CYBER-ATTACK-

Air India has recently announced that,

ten years’ worth of Air India customer data such as credit cards, passports

and phone numbers were leaked in a cyber-attack on its data processor in February 2021.

Cyber-attack has affected about 45 lakh customers who got registered between August 26, 2011 to February 3, 2021.

This was a ‘highly sophisticated’ attack which targeted Geneva-based passenger system operator called SITA. SITA served the Air India apart from Star Alliance of airlines including Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa.

What is a Cyber Attack? Cyber-attack is an online attack,

launched by cybercriminals using one or more computers against single or multiple computers or networks and other such information systems.

It maliciously disables computers and steal data. It also uses a breached computer as a launch point for other such attacks.

Methods like malware, ransomware, phishing, denial of service are used to attack the computers or networks.

IN THE FINANCIAL YEAR 2020-21, INDIA SEES GROWTH OF 10% (TO $82 BN) IN FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT (FDI)-

Singapore emerged as the top

investor with almost a third of all investments, followed by the US which accounted for 23% of FDI and Mauritius from where 9% of the foreign capital flows originated.

FDI equity flows from the US more than doubled during the year compared with 2019-20, while investments from the UK surged 44%.

Gujarat was the top FDI destination in 2020-21, accounting for 37% of the foreign equity inflows, followed

by Maharashtra (2nd) which got 27% of the equity inflows.

Karnataka (3rd) accounted for another 13% of the equity investments.

Computer software and hardware has emerged as the top sector during 2020-21 with about 44% share of the total FDI equity inflow.

RBI ANNUAL REPORT: CENTRAL BANK SEES BIG JUMP IN EARNINGS FROM FOREX SALES, ADDING TO SURPLUS- A higher-than-expected surplus

transfer from the Reserve Bank of India to the government came mostly on account of income earned from sales of foreign exchange, under an accounting policy adopted by the central bank in FY19.

The central bank saw a 69% jump in earnings from foreign exchange transaction, which, together with a lower transfer to its contingency fund, allowed for a larger transfer of surplus.

The annual report shows: RBI balance sheet grew 6.9%,

reflecting its liquidity and foreign exchange operations.

Income for the year fell 10.96%; expenditure decreased 63.10%.

This provision reflects a Rs 20,710 crore transferred to contingency fund. As a result, the surplus stood at Rs 99,122 crore as against Rs 57,128 crore last year.

NORTHERN RAILWAY HAS ORDERED SUSPENSION OF WRESTLER SUSHIL KUMAR AFTER HE WAS ARRESTED BY DELHI POLICE IN A MURDER CASE- Winner of Olympic medal, Sushil

Kumar, was arrested on May 23 for his involvement in death of a 23 years old wrestler, Sagar Dhankhar, at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi.

Sushil Kumar was appointed as senior commercial manager in Northern Railway and he was on deputation with Delhi government since 2015.

He was posted as an Officer on Special

Duty (OSD) at Chhatrasal Stadium to look after development of sports at school level.

He won 2008 Olympic medal, which happens to be second medal for India in wrestling. He also received India’s highest honour for sportsperson, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, in 2009.

PM MODI LAUNCHES E-100 PROJECT IN PUNE TO PRODUCE, DISTRIBUTE ETHANOL ACROSS THE COUNTRY-

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the E-100 pilot project in Pune to mark the World Environment Day.

The ambitious project aims to set up a network for production and distribution of ethanol across the nation.

The Prime Minister also released the 'Report of the Expert Committee on Road Map for ethanol blending in India 2020-2025', in line with the theme for World Environment Day this year - promotion of biofuels for a better environment.

Till 2014, on an average, only 1.5 per cent of ethanol could be blended in India which has now reached about 8.5 per cent.

which allows engine to completely combust fuel. This result in fewer emissions and reduces environmental pollution.

Ethanol, being a by-product of sugar industry, is a renewable source that leads to net reduction in emission of Carbon dioxide, Carbon Monoxide and hydrocarbons.

same type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages, used as fuel.

It is most often used as a motor fuel, mainly as a biofuel additive for gasoline.

The first production car running entirely on ethanol was the Fiat 147, introduced in 1978 in Brazil by Fiat.

Ethanol is commonly made from biomass such as corn or sugarcane.

IT DEPARTMENT TO LAUNCH ITS NEW E-FILING PORTAL- The Income Tax Department launched

its new e-filing portal on June 7, 2021. The new portal can be accessed through www.incometax.gov.in.

The new portal will display all interactions and uploads or pending actions on a single dashboard for follow-up action by the taxpayer. It will act as a one-stop centre for all such actions.

The portal will enable taxpayers to proactively update their profile to provide certain details of income including salary, house property and

profession, which will be used in pre-filling their ITR.

A mobile app will also be released

subsequently after the initial launch of the portal, to enable taxpayers to get familiar with the various features.

UNION CABINET APPROVED HIKE ON MSP FOR KHARIF CROPS FOR 2021-22-

With the monsoon announcing its

arrival, the government on 9th June increased Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated kharif crops for marketing season 2021-22.

The sesamum MSP has been raised 6.59 per cent — the highest among all crops — while in the case of paddy, the principal kharif crop, the increase in floor price is 3.8 per cent.

What is MSP? Minimum Support Price (MSP) is a

form of market intervention by the

Government of India to insure agricultural producers against any sharp fall in farm prices.

The minimum support prices are announced by the Government of India at the beginning of the sowing season for certain crops on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).

prices received by the farmers. ACCORDING TO MEMBER OF NITI AAYOG, DR VK PAUL, INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH (ICMR) WILL START 4TH NATIONAL COVID-19 SERO SURVEY- He urged states to roll out their own

sero surveillances in order to assess spread of covid-19 pandemic.

This will be the fourth serosurvey conducted by ICMR. It will be conducted in 70 districts across India.

Children aged six years and above will be surveyed.

What is a Sero survey? Sero survey is used to determine

prevalence of coronavirus antibodies among community. In the survey, blood samples are tested for presence of IgG (Immunoglobulin G) antibodies.

These antibodies determine a past coronavirus infection. IgG appear within two weeks of covid-19 infection. However, it is unclear how long antibodies detectably persist in body.

Their presence indicates past exposure to virus and not its presence in the body. This facility-oriented surveillance is expansion of testing of flu and serious respiratory cases in hospitals which are being carried out by government.

INDIA AIMS TO RESTORE 26 MILLION HECTARES OF DEGRADED LAND BY 2030: PM MODI- Prime Minister Narendra Modi

delivered the keynote address at the UN “High-Level Dialogue on Desertification, Land Degradation and Drought” on June 14, 2021 through video conference.

This was the 14th Session of the

Conference of Parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

India has added around 3 million hectares of forest cover in the last 10 years. This has enhanced the combined forest cover to almost one-fourth of the country's total area.

India also aims to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030 to achieve an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Land Degradation Land degradation is a process in

which the value of the biophysical environment is affected by a combination of human-induced processes acting upon the land.

It is viewed as any change or disturbance to the land perceived to be deleterious or undesirable.

TWITTER LOSES PROTECTION UNDER SECTION 79 OF IT ACT-

its failure of appointing statutory officers, as required by the new IT rules of the Indian Government.

This will mean that Twitter will no longer be protected under Section 79 of the IT Act and its top executives will now be liable for all the content on its platform that is considered inflammatory or considered unlawful in nature.

However, Twitter has reportedly appointed an interim Chief Compliance Officer in India, and details of it will be soon shared with the IT Ministry of India.

Section 79: According to section 79 of the

Information Technology act, an intermediary will not be held legally or otherwise responsible for any third-party information, data link or communication made available or hosted on its platform.

The protection under Section 79 will be applicable if the intermediary in any way does not modify any information contained in the transmission, initiate the transmission of the message, or select the receiver of the message.

THE CABINET COMMITTEE ON ECONOMIC AFFAIRS HAS APPROVED THE PROPOSAL OF THE MINISTRY OF EARTH SCIENCES (MOES) ON THE DEEP OCEAN MISSION (DOM)- The blueprint of the DOM to explore

the deep recesses of the ocean was unveiled in 2018. Earlier, MoES had also rolled out the draft Blue Economy Policy.

The cost of the Mission has been estimated at Rs. 4,077 crore over a five-year period and will be implemented in phases.

MoES will be the nodal ministry implementing this multi-institutional ambitious mission.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS A-76: WORLD’S LARGEST ICEBERG BREAKS OFF OF ANTARCTICA-

An Iceberg recently calved off from

the continent of Antarctica. This iceberg is now the largest iceberg in the world. It has been named as A-76.

The Ice Berg is 170 kilometres long and 25 kilometres wide. The ice berg was spotted by a European Space Agency satellite called Copernicus Sentinel. It is a two-satellite constellation that orbits the earth’s poles.

Every time an ice berg calves out from Antarctica, it adds up to the rising sea levels. However, in this case, the ice shelf from which this berg carved out was already floating on water.

The Ice Shelf from which A-76 calved out is called Ronne Ice Shelf.

ISRAELI SECURITY CABINET APPROVES CEASEFIRE TO STOP MILITARY OPERATION IN GAZA- Israel on May 20 announced a

ceasefire in the bruising 11-day war against Hamas militants that caused widespread destruction in the Gaza Strip and brought life in much of Israel to a standstill.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced the ceasefire after a late-night meeting of his Security Cabinet. It said the group had unanimously accepted an Egyptian proposal, though the sides were still determining exactly when it was to take effect.

Causalities reported: At least 230 Palestinians were killed,

including 65 children and 39 women, with 1,710 people wounded, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not break the numbers down into fighters and civilians.

Hamas and the militant group Islamic Jihad said at least 20 of their fighters have been killed, while Israel said the number is at least 130. Some 58,000

Palestinians have fled their homes, many of them seeking shelter in crowded U.N. schools at a time of a raging coronavirus outbreak.

CHINA-RUSSIA TO BEGIN THE BIGGEST NUCLEAR POWER PROJECT- The Russian President Vladimir Putin

and the Chinese President Xi Jing Ping attended the ceremony that began the construction of the Nuclear Power Project on May 19, 2021.

In 2018, Russia and China signed an

agreement on Nuclear Energy Cooperation Project. Under the agreement, the countries agreed to build Unit three and Unit Four of the Xudapu Nuclear Power Plant and Unit

7 and Unit 8 of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant.

The contract value of the project is twenty billion USD. The nuclear reactors to be used in the project are third generation VVER-1200 reactors.

After completion, the reactors will generate 37.6 billion kilo watt hours of electricity. Also, they will reduce 30.68 million tonnes of carbon dioxide and will also reduce the use of fossil fuels.

COMMONWEALTH HEALTH MINISTERS, LED BY INDIA SEEK EQUAL ACCESS TO COVID-19 VACCINES- Commonwealth health ministers, led

by India, have called for swift and equal access to Covid-19 vaccines for everyone around the world.

In a joint statement on behalf of the 54 Commonwealth member countries, they expressed deep concern over the stark gaps in access and delivery of doses, especially in poor countries, and called for "fair and transparent" pricing for the vaccine.

Only 0.3 per cent of the life-saving vaccine doses have been administered in 29 poor countries. About 84 per

cent of shots have been given in high and upper-middle-income countries.

PRESIDENT OF NEPAL, BIDHYA DEVI BHANDARI, DISSOLVED THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON MAY 22, 2021- The decision was taken on the

recommendations of cabinet headed by caretaker Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Fresh elections will be held in November 2021.

According to Article 76 (7) of the Constitution of Nepal states, President can dissolve the house of representatives and announce a new date to conduct election within six months when the Prime Minister appointed under Clause (5) fails to own vote of confidence or when no member can be appointed as Prime Minister.

KP Sharma Oli had claimed of having support of 153 lawmakers including members of Janata Samajbadi Party.

On the other hand, Nepali Congress President Deuba claimed to have the support of 149 parliamentarians. Both the claims did not comply because, Nepal’s house of representatives is constituted of 275 members.

Political crisis in Nepal The political crisis in Nepal started in

May 2018 when KP Sharma Oli-led CPN-UML & National Communist Party got merged and decided to serve as joint chairmen of ruling party.

CPN-UML was the largest party in House of Representatives but increasing disputes within the ruling part resulted in split again.

Following the split, in December 2020, Prachanda-led party expelled Prime Minister Oli as co-Chair and Prachanda was made the first Chairman. After that, house of representatives was dissolved in 2020 which was reinstated again following the order of supreme court in 2021. But, recently on May 10, Prime Minister Oli has lost the vote of confidence and the house stands dissolved.

THE GLOBAL G20 HEALTH SUMMIT WAS CO-HOSTED BY EUROPEAN COMMISSION ALONG WITH ITALY AS PART OF ITS G20 PRESIDENCY AMID THE SURGE AND SPREAD OF THE CORONAVIRUS CASES-

The summit adopted the agenda to

overcome Covid-19 pandemic. It also decided to develop and endorse a Rome Declaration of principles.

Summit noted, risk of more transmissible variants has increased with nine people losing their lives to Covid-19 per minute.

BELARUS CONDEMNED FOR 'HIJACKING' RYANAIR PLANE TO DETAIN JOURNALIST-

The authoritarian President

Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus sparked international outrage on 23rd May after his regime forced a commercial airline flying from Greece to Lithuania to land in its territory allegedly on the pretext of a bomb scare, so it could arrest a dissident journalist on board.

The journalist, Roman Protasevich, is a prominent opponent of Lukashenko, and had been living in exile in

neighbouring Lithuania since fleeing his home country in 2019.

26, is the co-founder of the NEXTA media outlet on social media platform Telegram.

The channel serves as a rare source of independent news in Belarus, where media freedoms have been scarce during Lukashenko’s long rule, especially after the 2020 election, when most outlets were banned.

NEXTA, thus, has emerged as an important platform for opposition forces to share information and organise against Lukashenko.

In November, he was charged in Belarus with inciting public disorder and social hatred. The regime has also put his name on a list of terrorists, and if convicted, he could face the death penalty.

INDIA-ISRAEL SIGNS 3-YEAR PROGRAM FOR COOPERATION IN AGRICULTURE- India and Israel have inked a three-

year joint work programme which will continue till 2023. Joint work programme was initiated with the aim of enhancing cooperation in agriculture.

Under new work programme, 13 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) were set up to make Indian farmers aware of Israeli farm and water technologies.

A model ecosystem in agriculture called Villages of Excellence (VoE) will also be created across eight states within 75 villages.

(UK) on May 25, 2021, kickstarted 14-

week consultation preparation for trade negotiations with India to seek views from the public and businesses.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on May 4, 2021, had announced a new UK-India trade deal worth 1 billion pounds that expects to create more than 6,500 job opportunities in the UK.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION (WHO) HAS GIVEN APPROVAL FOR GLOBAL USE OF COVID-19 VACCINE BY SINOVAC BIOTECH LTD. OF CHINA- WHO recommended its use for people

above 18 years. Two-dose will be scheduled for it, with a gap of two to four weeks between shots.

Sinopharm Group Co. had secured WHO’s approval for emergency use in May 2021.Additional inoculation options will be given for Covax programme led by WHO to ensure every country has access to vaccines.

Other vaccines cleared for emergency use by WHO are vaccines from Pfizer Inc. & BioNTech SE, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca Plc, and Moderna Inc.

Chinese shot was battling concerns

about its efficacy because it showed an efficacy rate of 50.7% in preventing symptomatic covid cases in Brazil.

Real world data shows that, it is 94% effective against symptomatic infection, 96% against hospitalization while 98% effective against death.

CHINA RELAXED ITS TWO-CHILD POLICY AND ANNOUNCED IT WILL NOW ALLOW THREE CHILDREN PER MARRIED COUPLE- China embarked upon its one-child

policy in 1980, when its government was concerned that the country’s growing population, which at the time was approaching one billion, would impede economic progress.

Chinese authorities have long hailed the policy as a success, claiming that it helped the country avert severe food and water shortages by preventing up to 40 crore people from being born.

It was a source of discontent, as the state used brutal tactics such as forced abortions and sterilisations.

Why this policy is important? From 2016, the Chinese government

finally allowed two children per couple– a policy change that did little to arrest the rapid fall in population growth.

Three Child Policy was announced after China’s 2020 census data showed that the country’s rate of population growth is falling rapidly despite the 2016 relaxation.

The country’s fertility rate has dropped to 1.3, far below the replacement level of 2.1 required for a generation to have enough children to replace it.

Where does India stand? India’s population is estimated to be

over 1.36 billion as of March 2021, indicating an estimated 12.4% growth over the last decade.

That is lower than the 17.7% between 2001 and 2011.

However, a 2019 United Nations report had projected India to overtake China as the most populous country by 2027.

India is expected to add nearly 273 million people between 2019 and 2050.

WORLD SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SUMMIT 2021- World Sustainable Development

Summit was organised on June 4, on the eve of World Environment Day (June 5).

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar, addressed the summit.

G7 DEAL ON MINIMUM GLOBAL CORPORATE TAX- Recently, Group of seven (G7)

advanced economies signed a landmark deal on taxing multinational companies. As per the deal, minimum global tax rate would be at least 15 percent.

Agreement was signed by finance ministers of United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Canada, France, Italy and Japan.

The proposal was made which would impose an additional tax on several multinational companies and

technology giants like Facebook, Amazon and Google to pay taxes to countries based on where their goods or services are sold irrespective of their physical presence there.

Under new tax system, countries where big firms operate would get ‘right to tax’ at least 20% of profits.

club of wealthy democracies consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Founded in 1975. Biden-Putin Summit- US President Joe Biden and Russian

President Vladimir Putin held a high-stakes summit at an 18th-century Swiss villa, Villa La Grange in Geneva on June 16, 2021.

This is Biden's first meeting with Putin after he took oath as President of the United States.

He has become the fifth US President to meet the Russian President. The meeting comes at a time when the US-Russia relationship is at one of its lowest points.

World Bicycle Day is celebrated every

Since 1974, World Environment Day

History: World Environment Day came into

by the 'World Food Safety Day' as per the World Health Organization (WHO).

development through proper food security.

The theme this year is 'Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow'.

History: The need to establish a world food

safety day was discussed in several sessions of the United Nations general assembly (UNGA) from 2016 onwards.

A resolution was adopted on December 20, 2018, by the assembly to mark June 7 as the day to "celebrate the myriad benefits of safe food".

Operation Blue Star is a code name given to an Indian Military Operation conducted on 5th June 1984.

The operation was ordered by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, primarily to take control of the Harmandir Sahib Complex in Amritsar (popularly known as the Golden Temple).

The Indian military entered into the premises of the temple to drive out, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his armed followers.

Few months post-Operation Blue Star, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards, followed by severe anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.

The ideals of a revolution first took root in his mind when he read about the death sentence awarded to Bhai Parmanand, an Indian nationalist and Arya Samaj missionary.

achieved without violence, bloodshed, which meant his views were in stark contrast to Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of ‘ahimsa’.

Bismil was one of the chief founders of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) along with Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Jadugopal Mukherjee.

Was involved in the Mainpuri Conspiracy of 1918 in which police found a few young people including

Bismil selling books that were not prescribed by the government.

In 1925, Bismil and his companions Chandrasekhar Azad and Ashfaqulla Khan decided to loot a train in Kakori near Lucknow.

12TH JUNE - WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR- World Day Against Child Labour

Officer after a prolonged battle with Indian government over its new IT rules.

India announced new IT rules in February, 2021 which was implemented on May 25. It requires tech companies in India like Facebook, WhatsApp, Google etc to appoint chief compliance officer, nodal officer and grievance officer in India.

Twitter India had asked government for more time to comply with new IT

Rules while WhatsApp & Facebook appointed their respective grievance officers.

Indian government notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 in February 2021.

New rules deal with social media and over-the-top (OTT) platforms. Rules were framed under section 87 (2) of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000. Under the new rules, resident grievance officer will be appointed under larger grievance redressal mechanism.

Mount Nyiragongo in Goma Town in

eastern Congo erupted, sending panicked residents fleeing out of town.

As soon as the panic spread in the town, an Indian Army contingent as part of the United Nations Mission in Congo facilitated the smooth evacuation and protection of civilians and other UN personnel in volcano-affected Goma.

DEFENCE MINISTRY CLEARS INDIAN NAVY’S MEGA SUBMARINE TENDER WORTH RS 43,000- The Defence Acquisition Council

chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on June 4, 2021, cleared the Indian Navy’s Request for Proposal (RFP) for a mega submarine tender worth Rs 43,000 crore under Project P-75 India (P-75I) under the Strategic Partnership Model.

Tender for Project P-75I has been cleared and issued to two Indian strategic partners - Larsen & Turbo (L&T) and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) who can partner with five foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) including Russian Rosoborboexport, Spanish Navantia, South Korean Daewoo, German TKMS, and French Naval Group.

The six stealth submarines under Project 75 India (P-75I) will succeed the Project 75 (P75) comprising the Kalvari or Scorpene level submarines which were being built at the Mazagon

MULTIROLE HELICOPTERS FROM UNITED STATES (US) IN JULY 2021-

India and US had signed a deal worth

$2.4 billion in February 2020 to procure 24 MH-60 Romeo helicopters from Lockheed Martin.

First batch of Indian pilots has reached US for training on helicopters. Pilots would undergo training first in Pensacola in Florida and then in San Diego in California.

MH-60 Romeo helicopters have been designed to operate from aircraft carriers, cruisers, frigates and destroyers. It would be equipped with multi-mode radars and night vision devices.

They would be armed with Hellfire missiles, precision-guided weaponry and torpedoes. These helicopters are built to target ships, submarines and conduct search & rescue operations at sea. It will replace Sea Kings.

THE INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH (ICMR) APPROVED INDIA’S FIRST SELF-USE RAPID ANTIGEN TEST (RAT) FOR COVID-19 NAMED AS COVISELF-

The test-kit is developed by MyLab

Discovery Solutions, a Pune-based molecular company.

It uses Rapid Antigen Test and gives results within 15 minutes.

This test is synced with a mobile app, CoviSelf, which will help directly feed the positive case’s report on the ICMR portal.

ICMR has advised this test only for those who have symptoms or are high-risk contacts of positive patients and need to conduct a test at home.

This test is not advised for general screening in public places of hawkers, show owners, or commuters.

Rapid Antigen Test It is a test on swabbed nasal samples

that detects antigens (foreign substances that induce an immune response in the body) that are found on or within the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

It is a point-of-care test, performed outside the conventional laboratory setting, and is used to quickly obtain a diagnostic result.

Like RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction), the RAT too seeks to detect the virus rather than the antibodies produced by the body.

Black fungus is a serious but rare

fungal infection caused by a group of molds called mucormycetes, which is abundant in the environment.

White Fungus or Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida.

Candida normally lives on the skin and inside the body, in places such as the mouth, throat, gut, and vagina, without causing any problems.

Candida can cause infections if it grows out of control or if it enters deep into the body (for example, the bloodstream or internal organs like the kidney, heart, or brain).

The most common species that causes infection is Candida albicans.

How and Whom does it affect? Like the black fungus, white fungus is

also more likely to afflict people with compromised immune systems, pre-existing medical conditions, AIDS, a recent kidney transplant or diabetes.

People experience symptoms similar to Covid if it reaches the lungs such as chest infection, despite testing negative for the virus.

White fungus affects the lungs as well as other parts of the body including the nails, skin, stomach, kidney, brain, private parts and mouth.

SINGAPORE APPROVES COVID BREATH TEST-

minute. The test has been developed by a start-up Breathonix.

The test kit works in a manner similar to standard breathalyzer test which is used by police to check for erratic drunken drivers.

To test, person first blows into a one-way valve mouthpiece. Then, compounds in person’s breath are compared through machine learning software. It compares against sort of breath signature which is a symptom of person who is Covid-positive.

Breathonix test has undergone three clinical trials. Two in Singapore and one in Dubai. It resulted into the sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 95% on about 180 patients.

Panacea Biotec, one of the leading

Indian pharmaceutical producers in collaboration with the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) on May 24, 2021, launched the production of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine in India, stated a joint statement issued by the companies.

The first batch of the vaccine produced at Panacea Biotec’s facilities at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, India will be shipped to Russia’s Gamaleya Center for quality control.

The full production is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2021.

Sputnik V, a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, has been made by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow, Russia.

FIRST HUMAN CASE OF H10N3 BIRD FLU WAS REPORTED IN EASTERN PROVINCE OF JIANGSU IN CHINA-

A 41-year-old man has become first

human case of infection with H10N3 strain of bird flu.

He was diagnosed of H10N3 avian influenza virus on May 28. It is still not confirmed how he was infected with virus.

About the virus: H10N3 is a low pathogenic or less

severe strain of virus in poultry. The risk of it transmitting on a large scale is also very low.

In about 40 years, only 160 isolates of this virus were reported, in wild birds or waterfowl across Asia and North America. It has not been detected in chickens.

Avian influenza or Avian flu or Bird flu is caused by viruses adapted to birds.

It is similar to swine flu, horse flu, dog flu and human flu. Among three types of influenza viruses namely, A, B, and C; influenza A virus is zoonotic infection which entirely affects birds.

in five years, is estimated to cost over Rs. 25,000 crores.

With this spectrum, the railways will introduce Long-Term Evolution (LTE)-based Mobile Train Radio Communication (MTRC) on its routes.

The Railways currently relies on optical fibre for its communication network but with the allocation of fresh spectrum, it will be able to use high-speed radio on a real-time basis.

What is LTE? LTE (Long-Term Evolution) is

a fourth-generation (4G) wireless standard that provides increased network capacity and speed for cellphones and other cellular devices compared with third-generation (3G) technology.

It will be used for modern signalling and train protection systems and ensure seamless communication between loco pilots and guards.

The purpose of the LTE for Indian Railways is to provide secure and reliable voice, video and data

communication services for operational, safety and security applications.

IIT-KHARAGPUR DEVELOPS EARLY CYCLONE DETECTION TECHNIQUE- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)

Kharagpur have developed an early cyclone detection technique which will help in early detection of development or strengthening of tropical cyclones in North Indian Ocean region.

IIT developed this technique using

Eddy detection technique. It will investigate formative stages and advance detection time of tropical cyclogenesis.

About the new technique: The technique was developed with the

aim of identifying initial traces of pre-cyclonic eddy vortices in atmospheric column.

Earlier, remote sensing techniques were used to detect cyclones earliest.

But this detection was possible only after development low-pressure system over warm ocean surface.

New technique is based on cyclonic eddies which are prominent features of vertical atmospheric column inducing and developing into a cyclonic depression over warm ocean surface.

They could be used to detect prediction of cyclones at early stage. Thus, larger time gap between detection and impact of cyclone could help in preparation activities.

EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY (ESA) HAS ANNOUNCED A NEW MISSION- ENVISION MISSION TO VENUS- It is a European Space Agency (ESA)

led mission with contributions from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

It is likely to be launched sometime in the 2030s. Once launched on an Ariane 6 rocket, the spacecraft will take about 15 months to reach Venus and will take 16 more months to achieve orbit circularisation.

The mission will carry a range of instruments to study the planet’s

atmosphere and surface, monitor trace gases in the atmosphere and analyse its surface composition.

EnVision will follow another ESA-led mission to Venus called ‘Venus Express’ (2005-2014) that focussed on atmospheric research and pointed to volcanic hotspots on the planet’s surface.

GOVERNMENT HAS ANNOUNCED A SPECIAL “PM-CARES FOR CHILDREN” SCHEME FOR ALL THOSE ORPHANED DUE TO COVID-19- Children who have lost both

parents or their lone surviving

parent or their legal guardian or adoptive parent due to Covid-19 will be eligible for the scheme.

There are a total 577 Covid-19 orphans identified across the country. Also, there has been a rise in cases of child trafficking.

What comes under this scheme?

A corpus of Rs. 10 lakhs will be

allocated to each of these children from the PM CARES fund.

This corpus will be used to give a monthly stipend from 18 years of their age, for the next five years and on reaching the age of 23 years, he or she will get the corpus amount as one lump-sum for personal and professional use.

GOVERNMENT APPROVES CONSTRUCTION OF 3.61 LAKH HOUSES UNDER PMAY-U- The Central Government has given its

approval to 708 proposals for the construction of 3.61 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Urban (PMAY-U).

The decision was taken by the Union Government at the 54th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMS) under PMAY-U on June 9, 2021. This was also the first CSMS meeting during the second wave of pandemics.

With the latest decision, as of date, the total number of sanctioned houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban is now 112.4 lakh.

So far, 82.5 lakh houses have been grounded for the construction, of which 48.31 lakh have been completed/delivered.

Adani has overtaken China’s Zhong Shanshan became the second richest Asian in the world. He is now ranked at the 14th spot on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, as of May 21, 2021.

Gautam Adani is now ranked behind Asia’s richest person, RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani who is ranked 13th on

the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The Chinese billionaire Zhong Shanshan has been pushed to the 15th spot.

Ambani had replaced the Chinese billionaire in February 2021 to become Asia’s richest person.

THE THIRD EDITION OF THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG) INDIA INDEX AND DASHBOARD 2020–21 WAS RELEASED BY NITI AAYOG- The NITI Aayog launched its index in

2018 to monitor the country’s progress on the goals through data-driven assessment, and foster a competitive spirit among the States and Union Territories in achieving them.

The SDG India Index computes goal-wise scores on the 17 SDGs for each State and Union Territory.

These scores range between 0–100, and if a State/UT achieves a score of 100, it signifies it has achieved the 2030 targets.

The higher the score of a State/UT, the greater the distance to target achieved. States and Union Territories are classified in four categories based on their SDG India Index score: Aspirant (0–49) Performer (50–64) Front-Runner (65–99) Achiever (100)

Scores and Performance of states

Kerala retained its position at the

top of the rankings in the third edition of the index, with a score of 75, followed by Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh, both scoring 72.

At the other end of the scale, Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam were the worst

performing States. However, all States showed some improvement from last year’s scores, with Mizoram and Haryana seeing the biggest gains.

Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all".

According to State of India’s

Environment Report 2021, India’s rank has dropped by two places to 117 as compared to 2020 ranking on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SDG goals were adopted as a part of 2030 agenda by 193 United Nations member states in 2015.

In 2020, India’s rank was 115 and has dropped by two places because of major challenges pertaining to SDG2, SDG 5 and SDG 9.

India was ranked below four South Asian countries- Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh.India attained an overall SDG score of 61.9 out of 100.

Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY), India maintained 43rd rank on the annual World Competitiveness Index.

It was first published in 1989 and is compiled by the Institute for Management Development (IMD).

In 2021, the IMD examined the impact of Covid-19 on economies around the world. It provides extensive coverage of 64 economies.

It measures the prosperity and competitiveness of countries by examining four factors (334 competitiveness criteria): 1. Economic performance 2. Government efficiency 3. Business efficiency 4. Infrastructure

Rankings of different countries: The European countries display

regional strength in world competitiveness ranking with Switzerland (1st), Sweden (2nd), Denmark (3rd), the Netherlands (4th).

The top-performing Asian economies are, in order, Singapore (5th), Hong Kong (7th), Taiwan (8th) and China (16th). Singapore was 1st in the 2020 World Competitiveness Index.

Cyclone Tauktae battered the west coast of India, another low-pressure system is brewing over the Bay of Bengal and is set to intensify into a powerful cyclone.

Eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal are likely to face the brunt of the upcoming storm next week, as the storm is expected to make landfall by May 26.

As per the early forecasts, the low-pressure area is likely to develop over the east-central or central Bay of Bengal on Saturday, May 22.

possibility of its formation and has forecast intensification into a cyclone by May 26.

LAKSHADWEEP DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY REGULATION (LDAR) 2021 AND WHY ARE PEOPLE AGAINST IT? Residents of Lakshadweep have been

protesting against some new regulations that have been introduced by their new administrator Praful Khoda Patel.

The new rules allow the liquor to be sold on the island, bans beef and plans to disenfranchise the islanders of various counts.

The Draft Lakshadweep Development Authority Regulation, 2021 or LDAR 2021 was notified on the official website of the administration.

Regulations Proposed: Its proposal is to change the existing

land ownership on the island.

It also aims to modify the usage in Lakshadweep by providing sweeping, arbitrary, unchecked powers to the government. This in turn is directly interfering with the island’s resident’s right to possess and retain their property.

The Regulation also gives the powers to the Government to choose any land for “development” activities that have been provided under its regulation.

The Regulation also provides for unchecked power to the Government and it's bodies interfering with the rights of the islanders to retain their property.

DELHI GOVT TO GIVE RS 5 LAKHS FOR DEATH DUE TO LACK OF OXYGEN-

The Delhi government will give compensation amount of up to Rs 5 lakh to families of those COVID patients who died due to lack of oxygen.

This amount will be an add-on to the already-announced Rs 50,000 compensation to families of those who died due to COVID-19 infection.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has formed a committee of six doctors to prepare the framework of the compensation.

The committee will decide the framework based on which a maximum compensation of Rs 5 lakh will be given.

MADHYA PRADESH IS AT THE FIRST POSITION IN ANEMIA MUKT BHARAT INDEX- Himachal

Pradesh has climbed to the third spot in the Anemia Mukt Bharat Index 2020-21 national ranking with a score of 57.1.

Madhya Pradesh is at the first position with a score of 64.1 followed by Odisha with a score of 59.3.

Anemia remains a major public health issue with high prevalence across the country irrespective of gender, age and geography.

Almost 50% of the pregnant women, 59% of children fewer than five years of age, 54% of adolescent girls and 53% of non-pregnant non-lactating women in India are anemic.

The score card and rankings in the Anemia Mukt Bharat Index are based on certain parameters like coverage of IFA supplementation across beneficiaries to support assessment of progress and performance of the programme.

Iron-plus Initiative aims to strengthen the existing mechanisms and foster newer strategies for tackling anemia.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and UNICEF have launched this programme to reduce the prevalence of Anemia in all over India.

There are many causes of anemia, out of which iron deficiency accounts for about 50 percent of anemia in school children and among women of reproductive age-group, and 80 percent in children 2–5 years of age.

‘Medicine from the Sky’ initiative in partnership with World Economic Forum, Niti Aayog, and HealthNet Global.

Under this project, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone flights will be

used for delivery of vaccines and drugs using the identified airspace of the Vikarabad district.

The program will last for 24 days

where four batches would carry out sorties for six days each.

The drones would be carrying vaccine cold storage boxes equipped with temperature sensors and data loggers to record the performance.

The objective of Medicine from the Sky is to generate insights that can drive future adoption strategies and policy interventions for inclusion of drones in healthcare supply chain
