Nature and Extent of involvement of Faculty and students in academic
affairs/improvements
S R K R Engineering College is a dream comes true of its founder, late Sri Sagi Rama Krishnam Raju who envisioned technological progress in the Delta region of Andhra Pradesh in 1970s. With a proactive policy of transforming the technical education into potentially life-altering platform, the institution readily welcomes up-gradation in all aspects. Four decades of cerebral efforts of the institution culminated in setting a pragmatic teaching-learning environment where education is an instrument for social, economic, and cultural change. With a goal of imparting knowledge – ideally both content-specific and relevant to life- SRKR Engineering College constantly strives to foster collaborative environments by supporting innovation and frontier research. Enmasse, the institution is a vibrant, connected community that is home to diverse, ambitious, and creative students. It offers both UG and PG programs; a diverse, committed, and accessible faculty; sophisticated facilities; and special emphasis on experiential learning.
Faculty involvement: Faculty are at the core of students’ learning and thus, their role in the success of students is instrumental to the vitality of an institution.
Highly qualified and professionally trained faculty in SRKR Engineering College extend a platform to let the students unravel their inherent and latent talents and
contribute to the global development. Upgrading of knowledge is not the only focus for the teaching fraternity in SRKR Engineering College, the faculty also hold various responsibilities on academic and administrative fronts for the holistic progress. Their commitment includes teaching, research, student counselling, and extension activities. Also, they play administrative or advisory roles for various committees. They exhibit enthusiasm towards learning new teaching strategies and constantly focus on shared decision-making and teamwork as well as community welfare.
Members of the faculty handle their teaching assignments with professional skill. They familiarize themselves with the overall organization of the institution and with its requirements and regulations with which they scrupulously comply. They strive to be good citizens of the academic community, cooperative and efficient in meeting deadlines, submitting grades, and returning students’ work with appropriate comments. They are active participants as committee members, counsellors, and in whatever other capacity they can render the best services in the affairs of the department as well as the institution. Ideally, they also carry interest in the current activities and problems of the larger community and pave a way for the mutual enrichment of the community and the institution. They aim at the constant up-gradation of knowledge in their respective fields by widening their knowledge horizon through scholarly research and study. They contribute to their expertise to the students and the community to the best. They keep themselves abreast of new developments in their subject area, attend and actively participate in the meetings of appropriate learned societies, organize and participate in various National and International conferences/seminars/workshops/FDPs/SDPs etc. sponsored by AICTE, DST and various other organizations. Their commitment towards research and publication in various reputed journals, authoring books and establishing various research units in the institution not only expands the academic firmament but also establishes a strong connection among faculty, students, industry and the community. With their learning experience, faculty map the concrete skills and the outcomes to syllabi, and help the respective departments systematically measure and improve the learning experience over time. At the beginning of every academic semester, faculty will take orientation classes and make the students familiarize with the syllabus and the assessment process. The syllabus, in essence, serves as a roadmap that provides the course objectives and describes what students should learn at the end of the course. More importantly, it permits students to know what is expected of them and orients them to plan accordingly. Faculty nurture the students with warm, kind-hearted, accessible, enthusiastic and caring disposition. The mutual respect between the teacher and the student provides supportive and inclusive environment in the classroom. Faculty value students’ ideas and opinions and drive them confident in their academic explorations.
Another important aspect is assessment. Faculty uses formative assessments throughout the teaching-learning rather than making a summative assessment at the end or mid semester. Also, faculty provides timely feedback, grading through the means of the Learning Management System (LMS) facilitated by the institution. This platform is provided not only for the convenience of faculty, but also for the effective dissemination of the content that helps students prosper in learning.
For various reasons, students tend to skip classes occasionally or, in some cases, often. Since attendance is a crucial determinant in students’ success in college, faculty also help students maximize their success by finding creative ways to encourage students to attend classes as scheduled. Accessibility is another key factor in which faculty play a role in the success of students. Keeping this in view, the faculty ensure that the students have reasonable access to reach them beyond the scheduled class times either in person or through email.
Catering to the present needs of the students and the industry, apart from regular academic instruction, faculty designed a strategic system of training to the students for their GRE/TOEFL/IELTS/GATE, Placements, Soft Skills, Personality Development, Presentation Skills, Art of Living etc. by implementing innovative approaches in teaching-learning process. The workplace demands are extremely different from what the student is accustomed to, keeping this in view the teaching fraternity of SRKR Engineering College always remains conscious of the tag line: “I am teaching, are they learning?”
Also, some of the faculty visit reputed organizations and industries across the Nation on various occasions and purposes -subject experts, BOS members, evaluators, members of various committees, moderators in conferences, seminars, etc.-keeping an eye on effective practices and readily emulate the best one. Predicting the powerful benefits that come from experiential learning, the faculty constantly motivate students towards placement training, practicum, and internships where students can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world settings.
Student involvement: Experiential learning is the process of creating and transforming experience into knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, emotions, beliefs and senses or in short, learning through doing. In recent years, there has been a dynamic shift in the role of the university student through the creation and promotion of experiential learning opportunities on campuses across the globe. Thus, students of SRKR Engineering College are more focused and proactive towards innovative endeavors. They are active members of various student Chapters of technical societies such as ISTE, IEEE etc., and also various Clubs. They organize various programs giving vent to their technical, creative and scientific interests throughout their four years of stay at the institution. The list of their achievements reflects not just their capability but also their solidarity and responsibility. Their passion towards learning is contagious and time never stood as a boundary to limit their learning.
Their initiatives are not limited to mere academics but extended to the community by doing their best in addressing a few local problems. Fund raising programs for local blind school, giving programs in local community radio station, and the list continues. They are passionate and enthusiastic in organizing as well as participating in events relating to sports and games at college/university/state/national level, various competitions/fests/conferences/seminars relating to both technical and non-technical across the country and their contributions won many accolades. Seniors are always role models to their juniors. Also, they periodically organize competitions at the college and create opportunities to interact with students/experts/professionals/ industrialists /academicians of various academic/industrial sectorsat national and international level and widen the horizon of their communication and knowledge. SRKR Engineering College has a track record of students’ achievements such as GATE Ist rank, top scores in GRE/TOEFL/CAT etc.
Not only the present students but even the alumni of the institution play an active role in the institution’s progressive strides. SRKR Engineering College has a vast network of alumni who have gone on to succeed across professions throughout the world. Their visits, interactions, suggestions, offering internships, sharing innovative project ideas and many other contributions remain endless. In toto, the intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary interactions and collaborative work environments accelerate the opportunities for students either in job or in higher academic pursuits. With unity amidst diversity, the co-education system in SRKR Engineering College fine tunes students’ social etiquette and makes them not just industry-ready but more humane.
Mechanism/ Norms and Procedure for democratic/ good Governance
SRKR Engineering College is always sensitive towards efficient and effective administration in a democratic framework. It believes that good governance is equivalent to purposive and development-oriented administration which is committed to improvement in the quality of life of the people associated with the institution. It constantly keeps a check on the installation of positive virtues of administration and elimination of vices of dysfunctionalities. Thus, it is not a wonder that in the institution information flows in four directions: downward, upward, horizontally, and diagonally enabling the effective and smooth running of the whole system.
The management recognizes the need for decentralization for the growth of the institute and accords autonomy commensurate with the level of management. Deans and Heads are appointed who are given autonomy for efficient governance. Principal: To implement and monitor the education system and administrative system
of the institute.
Dean, Academics: Is responsible for the academic development of the institute and
monitors the progress of various teaching/learning processes.
Dean, Evaluation: Is responsible for framing evaluation procedures and implementing
them accordingly.
Dean, R & D: Monitors Research and Development activities in the institute.
Dean, Faculty Affairs: Monitors faculty-related affairs.
Dean, Placements: Monitors placement-related activities of the College.
Heads of the Departments: Are responsible for the academic and administrative
functions of the respective department.
In addition, there are several administrative positions to monitor various academic and administrative activities of the institution. The Organizational Chart of the institute provides a periscopic view of the administration.
The administration’s prime focus includes the following aspects: Enhancing effective and efficient administration. Improving the quality of teaching-learning process. Establishing legitimacy and credibility. Making administration responsive, citizen-friendly, and citizen-caring. Ensuring accountability. Securing freedom of information and expression. Making every department result-oriented. Improving quality of research and service centers. Improving productivity of faculty. Eradication of corruption to re-establish credibility of administration.
Student Feedback on the Institutional Governance/ Faculty Performance
Faculty evaluation is one of the most important objectives for any academic institution to ensure that the institution achieves the goals in graduating students, provides faculty with feedback about their performance, promotes faculty to higher ranks, and provides feedback to the decision makers about faculty. SRKR Engineering College encourages faculty to improve their quality of teaching by actively participating in FDPs and learning a potpourri of ICT tools. This enables the institution to provide the students with the best teaching practices, fair assessment, and treatment. At the end of each semester, routinely the students reflect on the effectiveness and quality of their faculty in teaching, because students’ feedback is a key factor that helps the college administration to assess the faculty. This in turn helps the faculty to identify their own strengths and weaknesses for improving their pedagogical practices and also to comprehend students’ perception. The 5 traits students rate high for ideal faculty: a) expertise, b) professionalism, c) ability to communicate, d) openness to students and their ideas; and e) being nurturing and supportive.
The table below elucidates the feedback process:
a The Principal instructs the technology centre team to collect feedback and also schedules the feedback collection process and circulates the same to all the departments.
b The Heads of Departments notify the students through circulars in the class rooms as well as in the notice boards. The class representatives also circulate such information to all the students.
c The students, section-wise, visit the Technology Centre, as per schedule and give their feedback through online feedback system. The feedback collected is anonymous and the students are encouraged to give descriptive suggestions for improvement.
d The feedback form invites feedback on 10 aspects of the teaching-learning process rating the performance on a scale of 1-10. Substantiating the rating through suggestions/remarks is mandatory to make the feedback meaningful.
f The feedback collection in the entire college is completed in 2-3 days at the end of semester.
g The consolidated feedback for each faculty is printed out and the copies are sent to the respective departmental HODs.
The college implements a systematic approach mentioned in the following to analyse the feedback:
The HoD of each department convenes a faculty review meeting to discuss the feedback received by each faculty member.
The individual faculty member is invited for a meeting with the Faculty Review Team to discuss the feedback received by them.
Any unusual levels of approval/disapproval by students in the ten facets of teaching learning process (questions in the feedback form) are taken up with individual teachers.
The teachers are commended for the good performance (rating: Excellent, Good and Satisfactory) and not satisfactory performance (rating: Poor and Very poor).
Faculty with best feedback receive appreciation accordingly.
Grievance Redressal mechanism for Faculty, staff and students
Relentlessly striving to provide an ideal ambiance for teaching-learning process in the campus, SRKR Engineering College prioritize highest standards of integrity and transparency in all working conditions with faculty, staff and students. If anything that disrupts the ethos of the institution is taken care by the Grievance Cell of the institution. A Grievance is a documented manifestation of dissatisfaction of a student/staff/faculty. Such dissatisfaction, if left unaddressed and unresolved, disturbs the ethos of the institution. The Grievance and Redressal Cell works under the supervision of one of the senior professors and a few other members. They devote attention, time and effort at resolving the Grievances of the students, staff and faculty within the framework of the institution’s guidelines and the terms of the policy. The grievances are noted and take necessary measures for their redressal.
Heeding to the special needs and issues of the girl students, women faculty and staff in the college, a sub-branch of Grievance and Redressal Cell for Women is originated under the charge of a team of senior women faculty members.
Establishment of Anti Ragging Committee
(a) SRKR Engineering College never spares any effort to ensure amicable and harmonious learning environment the campus. It takes all the necessary measures to instill cooperative ideology in the campus. In this regard, it constituted Anti-ragging Committee and took all the measures to stymie ragging in the campus. The Committee is led by the Principal as the Chairman, one of the senior professors of the institution as the Coordinator and a good number of faculty and students as members and carry the following Roles & Responsibilities: To prevent the menace of ragging inside and outside of campus. To create awareness among students about Anti Ragging act, punishments, and
