Did you know?A horse named Fogcutter ran in Thursday’s

steeplechase and fell as the pick of many handi-cappers named Clancy in the New York Post. Yeah, yeah, old news. A fogcutter is also a cocktail. Ingredients: half-ounce brandy, 1.5 ounces light rum, half-ounce gin, 1 tsp sweet sherry, 3 tbsp, lemon juice, 1 ounce orange juice, 1.5 ounces Orgeat Syrup. Directions: Shake all ingredients and strain into a collins glass over ice cubes. Top with a teaspoon of sweet sherry and serve. We’ll take a double.

The trailer of choice for professional trainers and transporters nationwide

(optional polished stainless exterior)

Rowdy Werner clutched the cover of Thursday’s Saratoga Special (the paper), moments after the Sara-toga Special (the race).

“I need to get another one of these,” Werner said. “This was some way to break the duck.”

On the cover stared Run Away And Hide, trained by Werner’s father, Ronny. About 12 hours after the paper hit the newsstand, Run Away And Hide crafted another cover-worthy moment – that’s him on page 1 again today.

The 2-year-old son of City Zip improved his career record to 3-for-3 with a seasoned effort in the Sara-toga Special.

Run Away And Hide broke well from the inside stall but was quickly outfooted by Join In The Dance and Unsung Song. Robby Albarado wasn’t worried, biding his time on the rail while Join In The Dance

took the field through a quarter in 21.66. Run Away And Hide stayed close and waited for a seam as Join In The Dance posted a half-mile in 44.80.

Turning for home, the seam appeared on the rail and Run Away And Hide shot through as Join In The Dance faded. Break Water Edison pounced from the outside and duelled with Run Away And Hide past the eighth pole.

Inside the sixteenth pole, Run Away And Hide finally dispatched Break Water Edison to win by 1 1/4 lengths over Break Water Edison and Reynal-dothewizard. The latter, sent off the tepid favorite, lunged at the start and played one step off the beat

the whole way. He rallied late but was no match for the front two.

Trained by Ronny Werner, Run Away And Hide fin-ished the 6 1/2-furlongs in 1:15.67. Bred by Ron Kirk and Michael Riordan and owned by Kirk, Riordan, and John Bates, Run Away And Hide flashed onto the racing circuit in April, winning his debut at Keeneland April 18. The bay son of City Zip wired 10 rivals that day. Two weeks later, he took the Grade III Kentucky Stakes while sitting just off the pace.

Werner spent the summer thinking about the Sara-toga’s opening week feature, the Sanford, but needed

to call an audible when a breeze back-fired. “I didn’t get the work I wanted on top of that first race, it wasn’t the horse’s fault, my rider messed up and I didn’t want to cram another work in a short time,” Werner said. “Ron’s great, he said, ‘You don’t have to do this, back up, let’s regroup.’ ”

Put on simmer for three weeks, Run Away And Hide nailed the 103rd run-ning of the Saratoga Special with a veteran-like response to a compromis-ing position.

Not that Werner was worried.“I didn’t want him breaking on the

lead, he actually broke a little slower which was good,” Werner said. “Robby did a great job not rushing him up and he just got position. When he got boxed in I loved that, a little bit anxious com-ing out of the turn, you’re hoping they give you a little bit of room and they did.”

Albarado has been aboard Run Away And Hide in all his starts. The jockey wasn’t worried either.

“He passed a lot of tests today, break-ing from the rail, going 6 1/2 furlongs and taking a lot of dirt in his face,” Al-barado said. “I got him to settle a bit for me early and he’s very kind and easy to handle. He came in off a long layoff and for him to put forth that effort was pretty impressive.”

Broken by David Scanlon, Run Away And Hide came to Werner right before the Keeneland meet. He came with a reputation.

“I had heard about him before I ever got him. David said, ‘I got a fast colt for you for Keeneland.’ He was every-thing David said. David knows what he’s got,” Werner said. “Fortunately, I got him and so far it’s been great. He’s such a good doer. He laid down at the detention barn, older horses don’t do that. His demeanor is just great.”

Going into the race, Werner had the duck at Saratoga. Winless after 19 days

of racing, Werner knew he was running out of time to win a race at Saratoga. On the way to the Trustees’ Room, Werner was asked if he was worried.

“Always,” Werner said. “You think about that at Keeneland, you think about that here, because it’s the best of the best, it’s tough and it can happen. That was the way to get rid of it. I’ve got a few more (2-year-olds) left. About three more you haven’t seen yet.”

Megapixel and Law Enforce-ment played the heavies in Thursday’s $79,650 Van Raalte Stakes, a sequel of sorts to their June 7 meeting at Belmont Park.

As in their first encounter, Megapixel (Edgar Prado) prevailed on the front end, though this time he had to battle twice as hard.

Bred and owned by Flying Zee Sta-bles, the son of Tale Of The Cat had to fight off Law Enforcement (Alan Gar-cia) throughout the stretch before pre-vailing by a neck at the wire.

“He took a while to develop, he re-ally didn’t get real good until he was a 3-year-old. He’s really a nice horse, a lot of heart,” said Flying Zee’s Carl Lizza. “I knew he had that kind of heart.”

Lizza showed a lot of respect for the runner-up as well, calling Megapixel and Law Enforcement “probably the best New York-breds in training.”

Megapixel shot out of the gate, cap-tured the early lead and never looked back, despite being stalked by Law En-forcement for the entire 7 furlongs. The two competitors were one-two through-

out. Be Bullish (Eibar Coa) made a be-lated run up the rail but finished a head short of second.

Trained by Carlos Martin, Megapixel improved his record to four wins from nine starts, with earnings of $188,220.

• Argyle Pink entered Thursday’s second with some big shoes to fill. As a half-sister to sprint champion Smoke Glacken and multiple graded-stakes winner Smokey Glacken, the 2-year-old daughter of Sky Mesa figured to be a runner. Trained by Eddie Kenneally for John Wieczorek, Argyle Pink (Julien Leparoux) did her family proud with a three-quarter length win over Selective (Shaun Bridgmohan) and Luster (Rob-by Albarado) in the 5 1/2-furlong dash for freshmen fillies.

Selective broke on top and blasted off to a 1 1/2-length lead after covering the opening quarter mile in 22 seconds. Leparoux kept Argyle Pink in second and began to cut into Selective’s lead as the fillies hit the far turn. Selective held a tenuous lead at the eighth-pole but Argyle Pink was determined and inched

away in the final yards for the score, stopping the clock at 1:04.01.

Argyle Pink entered off a swift bullet work over the Oklahoma training track, blowing out 3 furlongs in 35 3/5 Aug. 9. With some quality speed in her family and in her works Argyle Pink was hard-ly a surprise to Kenneally, who won’t be looking for a route race anytime soon.

“She has a lot of pedigree, being a half to a couple of really fast horses. I might not ever even want to know how far she’ll stretch out. We’re quite happy

with having a really good sprinter on our hands,” Kenneally said. “She showed a lot of speed in the morning so we liked her all along. She’s a special filly. Com-ing in she was ready to win today. She broke sharp and very professional out there. She showed a lot of toughness in the lane too.”

• George Weaver demonstrated his knack for getting horses to fire off long layoffs when he took the finale, a

$68,400 state-bred maiden, with Rob-ert Harvey’s Chicks Are Better (Prado). Looking every bit the heavy favorite, she calmly stalked Kaz Dear through the early going before drawing clear turn-ing for home en route to a 4 3/4-length win. Welcome To Wista (Channing Hill) held second through the stretch, while Vladimira (Aldo Arboleda) got up for third.

Chicks Are Better made her debut at Aqueduct Dec. 30, closing from sixth in a 12-horse filed to just miss by a half-length. With a lightly raced and still-de-veloping filly, Weaver opted to take the patient approach with the daughter of Gold Token.

“She had always acted like she had the ability but after her debut she seemed like she needed a little breather,” said Weaver, who notched his second win on the card. “I said to the owner that she just needed a little time and we should give her a few months off. She didn’t need surgery or anything but just need-ed some time to mature and grow into herself and I think we saw it today.”

• Weaver scored earlier in the day when New Member took the sixth, a $65,000, 6-furlong starter allowance. Owned by Agnes Peace, New Member (Javier Castellano) broke from the rail, took the lead, set the pace and extended his advantage in midstretch before hold-ing off Coach Butts (Garcia) by a neck.

The 3-year-old gelded son of Include redeemed himself after finishing sixth

in the slop here Opening Day, and im-proved his career mark to two wins from six starts.

“He ran a couple good races down at Gulfstream and then we ran into a mud-dy track at Belmont and he ran a good race,” winning trainer George Weaver said. “Then we tried to get smart and put him in as a main-track-only up here but he didn’t like the slop at all here. He’s a really nice horse. He trained great for that last race and great for this race,

he just liked the track better today.”Burns Up The Track (John Velazquez)

finished a length off Coach Butts to complete the triple.

• Billy Badgett notched his first win of the meet when second-time-starter Vinnies Wild Tale (Kent Desormeaux) took Thursday’s fifth, a $50,000 maid-en claimer for 2-year-olds.

“He ran well in his first start, but I was a little disappointed,” Badgett

said of the gelded son of West Acre. “I thought he’d run good today, you know, he was real green in his debut. He was gelded as a yearling because he was un-controllable.”

After rating comfortably in midpack, Vinnies Wild Tale built momentum at the quarter-pole then drew off to score by 4 1/2 lengths.

Pacesetter African Storm (Jorge Chavez) held on for second, with favor-ite Persian (Prado) third.

Look At Him left Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard scratching his head. Sheppard knew the horse had talent; the tricky part was getting him to display it in the afternoon. Or even getting him to the afternoon.

Bill Pape’s 6-year-old had more starts and stops than a New York City sub-way in the past three years, including an 18-month spell away from the races. But Look At Him got going Thursday with Robbie Walsh in the saddle in the $67,900 George Sloan Stakes, resolute-ly holding off challenges from Swagger Stick (Willie Dowling) and Sermon Of Love (Danielle Hodsdon) on his way to a 3 3/4-length victory.

Walsh was aboard the son of Crowd Pleaser for the first time in the Sloan but had done his homework prior to Thursday’s stakes, talking to Hodsdon, who rode Look At Him in his last three starts. The 32-year-old Irishman also hit up his trusty VCR, reviewing Look At Him’s prior starts while trying to gauge his tendencies.

“It was the first time I had ever sat on him but I had watched his races and seen his form, and he looked like a very

straightforward horse. Well, I was wide but there was a lot of speed in the race and I knew my horse was handy, so I popped him out and gave him some daylight,” Walsh said. “I always felt pressure, but he always kept digging in for more. He never gave the others an opportunity to pass him. Danielle got close to him and he picked it right up and then when Willie got close to him he kept digging and digging.”

Look At Him broke from the outside in the field of nine and was kept in the clear by Walsh as Tax Ruling and Quem Se Atreve sparred on the lead. Slip Away tucked in behind the frontrunners just ahead of Look At Him, as Swagger Stick and Sermon Of Love drafted behind the quartet. The order went unchanged for the first two laps of the 2 3/8-mile con-test, then Walsh began to move up on the outside as the leaders wavered.

Heading to the far turn, Look At Him took charge, but was immediately joined by Sermon Of Love, with Swag-ger Stick in the garden spot behind the two leaders. With one jump remaining, Look At Him shook clear of Sermon Of

Love while Swagger Stick dove to the in-side and loomed as a threat approach-ing the last. Look At Him jumped the last with a diminishing lead over Swag-ger Stick, but upon landing he surged clear and extended his lead to the wire. Sermon Of Love held the show, well clear of the rest.

Bred by Sheppard and Pape in Penn-sylvania, Look At Him made his hurdle debut at Morven Park in October 2006,

increasing his advantage over every hur-dle and drawing off to an overpower-ing 36-length score. He tackled novice stakes company in his next start and ran well to finish fourth in the Grade I AFLAC U.S. Championship at Calla-way Gardens.

Then the trouble started. Look At Him missed the entire 2007 season and didn’t make it back to afternoon action

until this May, when he finished second over yielding ground at Radnor May 17. But the hiccups continued from there. Look At Him failed to finish in his next two starts, an optional claimer at Phila-delphia Park July 6 and the Ninepins Novice Stakes here July 30.

“He’s had two pieces of bad luck. One, he’s had a bit of an ankle problem and that’s why he was off all last year, and then when we brought him back he had some bad racing luck,” Sheppard said. “He just got beat at Radnor and then he threw a shoe at Philadelphia Park and was pulled up. Then he made that bad mistake here and threw Dan-ielle off.”

Sheppard regrouped, as only he knows how. He gave Look At Him two schools over the Oklahoma turf course, drawing a little more juice from the bat-tery each time. Look At Him exited his fall in the Ninepins understandably tim-id and Sheppard knew he couldn’t rush him right back into the fray without taking a patient approach.

“I have to thank NYRA because they let me school him twice, which was not that easy to do with all the rain here,” Sheppard said. “(Schooling him) helped to make sure his head is straight. In his case I think he was a bit iffy, a bit care-ful, early on because in his first school he was jumping up and down. He schooled (Wednesday) with Matt McCarron and it definitely made a difference. I saw a difference in him and I think it gave him more confidence.”

Spotlight on UK Racing by Timeform & Racing UK

friday, August 15th, NEWBURY Race 7 (11:35 am)Class 5 Apprentice Handicap (4yo & up Rated 51-70) 9f; Purse $8,000

RACE ANALYSIS (In Program Number Order)CELTICELLO1 : Has been fairly consistent since winning a handicap at Chepstow in May. Showed his best form this season on his latest run when second behind Right Stuff at Windsor, collared on the line over a slightly longer trip than he tackles today. Two of his three wins have come on soft so conditions here will suit. Trainer’s son takes the ride (20 winners already for him this season) and he looks the one to beat. Rating: Timeform Rating 88

BLUE CHARm2 : Stepping up in trip after one win in eight starts at 6f/7f. That looks a curious decision, as he seemed to be suited better by the shorter of those two distances. He ran creditably last time and has been given some help by the official handicapper, but he is hard to fancy. Jockey 1-3 this season. 78

mERRYmADCAP3 : Only one turf win to name, which came almost three years ago at Bath on firm ground. Ran poorly last time on soft and although his all-weather form would give him good claims, he’s had plenty of chances to prove that he can transfer it to turf. Jockey one of the more experienced in the field and among the winners this month. 86

LUNAR RIVER4 : Another with superior all-weather form to turf, remains untried on extremes of going. Distance winner at Wolverhampton in July off mark of 60, she would have a chance on that form, but her consistency is such that she cannot be backed with confidence. Her jockey is one of the apprentice finds of the season and is good value for his 3 lb claim. 77

CORRIB5 : Winner of this race last year. Has only been seen once in 2008, at Wolverhampton in January when she finished last of nine behind Alexander Guru. If she was to recapture the pick of her form of last season she would warrant real consideration, but her current fitness and form are open to doubt. Her apprentice jockey doesn’t get many rides nowadays. ?

RED CURRENT6 : Has two wins for her current yard since being claimed last July. Has run no better than creditably since second of those but finished a close-up third at Chepstow earlier in August over a mile. That run showed she both retains some ability and acts on heavy ground, the latter could prove vital here. Apprentice has good record for this trainer. 84

DANISH mONARCH7 : Has only shown his form twice this season, both of those runs coming in sellers, struggling off this official rating in handicaps all season. Jockey has impressive 20% strike rate this season but his mount today is readily passed over. 81

VEHARI8 : Lightly raced and has shown little since 2006 – well beaten on his reappearance in June. His handicap mark is dropping, but it needs to keep going that way before he’ll be of any interest. His apprentice jockey is has just 1 winner from 39 rides since starting out. -

mYTHICAL CHARm9 : Veteran who will make her 97th career start. Last win came at Salisbury last year from a mark 4 lb higher than the one she will run from here, but nothing in her form so far this year says repeat will be forthcoming. Her apprentice jockey has patchy record. ?

RUffIE10 : Most of her runs this season have been on the all-weather. None of those are good enough to justify much interest in her, and from 6 lb out of the handicap she has it all to do. Her rider has yet to hit the same heights she achieved last season. ?

CONCLUSIONA poor race with question marks hanging over most of the field and by virtue of elimination on current form you can realistically make a case for only two or three. CELTICELLO has been in good heart for most of the season and races here off his last winning handicap mark, a repeat of his effort when just edged out in a tight finish at Windsor last time would see him go close, with Red Current and merrymadcap potentially his biggest dangers. A decent exacta opportunity; box 1-3-6 and key 1 on top over 3,6.

friday, August 15th, CATTERICk Race 1 (12:45 pm)Class 5 Amateur Riders Handicap (3yo & up Rated 56-75)

1m½; Purse $8,000

RACE ANALYSIS (In Program Number Order)HOLIDAY COCkTAIL1 : Better than ever this year and has won four of his last six starts, defying a career-high mark in decisive fashion for the latest of those successes at Pontefract under this evening’s jockey (who has a 26% strike rate this season). Thriving, and even with a 6-lb penalty looks the one to beat. Timeform Rating: 90

mARVO2 : Running well without winning since returning from an eighteen-month absence, finishing in the frame in handicaps four times from five starts. Beaten just a length into second by Mazaaya at Leicester last time and his ability to handle soft ground is another positive. The rider is having just his third ride on the Flat. 89

mANEkI NEkO3 : Successful at Thirsk in May but hasn’t built on that since, shaping as if amiss on his latest outing.

Clearly has temperament issues and best left alone. Jockey 0-6. 85§

GRACEfUL DESCENT4 : Her sole success came in minor event at Ayr last year and, although she hasn’t been totally discredited on either start this season, she has a bit to find on form. The local trainer’s wife takes the ride, though she’s yet to have a winner in thirteen attempts. 79

kALASAm5 : Fairly useful winner when trained by Willie Muir in 2007 but has shown absolutely nothing this year. Has dropped 9 lb in the weights in that time, but best watched unless market indicates otherwise. The young jockey takes just his third ride. ?

SALUSCRAGGIE6 : Course and distance winner of a handicap in April off a 4 lb lower mark, and her one creditable effort in four starts since came when runner-up in an apprentice event here last time. It’s no surprise to see previous winners at this course running well here time and time again and she could go close. Jockey yet to ride a winner

in twenty attempts. 89

ELITE LAND7 : Doing well this year and seemed better than ever on just his second start for this stable when second to Dimashq in an amateur event at Musselburgh last time, having no chance with impressive winner. Another with course and distance form and with conditions to suit that looks set to give a good account. His rider has an above-average strike-rate for an amateur. 92

HOmE8 : Temperamental but generally holding his form well this year, with a good effort last time when third to Western Roots in a similar contest at Newbury on first start since leaving Jim Boyle. Has a bit to find here, but not totally dismissed. Jockey 0-15. 79§

YORk CLIff9 : Ten years old now but belied his age when winning a claimer at Wolverhampton in July. Posted another good effort when runner-up to Saameq in a seller last time and there’s a chance he could still be competitive back in handicap company off this mark. His rider has five winners from 56 rides over the last three seasons. 88

HUGS DESTINY10 : Without a win since successful in this last year off mark of 55. Has work to do this time around from 4 lb out of weights. 89

CONCLUSIONJockeyship is often decisive in these Amateur Rider contests and the thriving HOLIDAY COCkTAIL is taken to complete the hat-trick under an amateur enjoying another good season. Those with good form over the tricky and tight Catterick track warrant the utmost respect, in particular Elite Land and Saluscraggie. Key HOLIDAY COCkTAIL on top of these two in exacta plays; 1 with 6,7.

RACE 1: CASUAL has never been on the lead in his last dozen starts but might inherit it today, which would make him tough to catch. ACCLIMATE looks like he was claimed with this spot in mind and Enrique Arroyo is great with his first-time claims. CIELO SONG could improve for his new barn and might appreciate the stretch to 7 furlongs.

RACE 2: API MOHKAT drops in for a tag after facing much tougher; nice tightener downstate should have him primed for a big run for an overdue barn. CHARGING HERO drops in for tag for first time. AT ATTENTION ran well earlier in the meet but would have to step up his game.

RACE 3: ONIYOME was disqualified from victory in her last but Mike Hush-ion isn’t bothering to run back in the condition, instead jumping up to this one – that’s a sign of confidence. MAIN STREET was the beneficiary of Oni-yome’s stretch antics but will have to work hard to do it on her own. NEW YORK CITI is on a five-race win streak – how many horses can say that?

RACE 4: SATURDAYNITESANDY outworked her stablemate – and Wednes-day debut winner – Mother Russia in a pair of Oklahoma drills in June; owner-trainer combo has been unbeatable here over the past few seasons. RED SEVEN plummets after burning chalk players in a trio of special-weight starts; not the type we want at even money. PALS FIRST LADY lured John Velazquez, who usually rides Allen Iwinski’s good stock.

RACE 5: ROLLERS could not have found a choicer spot for his turf de-but; anything less than an easy win would be disappointing. DON’T FOOLI HOULI seems poised to complete a chalky exacta for a very underrated turf trainer. THUNDER BUDDY ran well at this condition earlier in the meet.

RACE 6: In a field that had several well-meant runners PEGASUS TOMMY D. was 16-1 for his debut, which says to me he took a little bit of money. Though beaten 17 1/2 lengths he was only 4 out of second after a night-mare trip, and that runner-up won here Monday. He’s come back to put in two snappy works and meets no one like Hopeful-bound Cribnote. TRINITY MAGIC is an obvious choice for potent first-out connections. VINNIE VAN GO ran well in his debut and would be no surprise.

RACE 7: DHANYATA, the day’s best bet, owns a big class edge in this turf sprint and should be in the perfect spot behind the speed as the field turns

for home. STATELY took a lot of money in her U.S. debut and should move forward. FANCY DIAMOND got the hang of the turf game in her last start and is another eligible to improve.

RACE 8: Solid renewal of the Lake Placid pits an evenly matched cast so we need to shop for a price. MUCH OBLIGED heads down from Canada for a very crafty trainer; she ran a lifetime best in her last and that could be a sign she’s sitting on a big one. I LOST MY CHOO, winner of the Grade III Virginia Oaks, scratched when the state-bred Statue of Liberty washed off the turf last week. Both of the top choices should get plenty of pace to chase. BACKSEAT RHYTHM stays on her preferred surface and could get first run on the closers.

RACE 9: The thinking is TAR BEACH was eyeing this spot all along; Ken McPeek is deadly with second-time starters as well as first-time turf and this colt will save all the ground from the rail. HYPE is drawn wide, which is a major concern, but one that can be overcome against these; barn great with 2-year-olds going long on the grass. RELATIVELY READY was prob-ably not at Belmont Park, but gets to play his game here.

AND MUCH MORE!

Pat Reynolds stood outside the gap to the Oklahoma training track Thursday morning and thought back to Backseat Rhythm’s first two career starts here last August – a pair of off-the-board finishes sprinting on the main track.

“Unless they’re working like Big Brown,” he said, “you have to send them out there to see what you have.”

Big Brown introduced himself to the racing world on Closing Day of the 2007 meeting, running off to a lopsided debut win on the turf for Reynolds and owner Paul Pompa Jr. Backseat Rhythm took a bit longer to catch on but made her own headlines with when the filly took her turf debut at Belmont Park in September, rallying from off the pace

to score over Country Star, who went on to win a pair of Grade I stakes later that fall. She’s back at Saratoga today, this time on the turf, and rates as a ma-jor contender in the $150,000 Grade II Lake Placid Stakes at 9 furlongs.

While Big Brown left Reynolds’ barn shortly after his scintillating debut score, Backseat Rhythm remained.

After her maiden win at Belmont Reynolds shifted the daughter of El Corredor back to the main track, this time at a mile, in the Grade I Frizette at Belmont Oct. 6.

Backseat Rhythm closed well to finish second behind Indian Blessing and head-ed to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies as a major contender. Indian Blessing again

proved too tough but Backseat Rhythm rallied from 13th and last to get third in another encouraging effort.

Reynolds gave the filly the rest of the season off and she returned, on turf, in an allowance at Gulfstream Park Feb. 22, checking in third. After a pair of non-threatening main track efforts Reynolds switched Backseat Rhythm back to the turf and she responded with an impressive 6-length score in an al-lowance race at Belmont May 23. In her

last start prior to the Lake Placid Back-seat Rhythm was seventh, beaten only 5 1/4 lengths by favored Pure Clan, in the Grade I American Oaks at Hollywood Park July 5.

Having picked up Grade I black type on dirt in two of the most important 2-year-old filly races in the country, Reynolds is hardly complaining about Backseat Rhythm’s performance last

season. And he’s confident she’s on her preferred sur-face in the Lake Placid.

“We tried her sprinting here on the main track to start her career and she ran OK, hooked that filly Irish Smoke in her debut who came back to win the Grade I Spinaway here. We really didn’t know what we had at the time,” Reynolds said. “She took us to a lot of good places last year on dirt but I think she’s a better horse on the turf. When we tried her on turf at Belmont, going two turns, she ran a smoker that day. We tried the Frizette and Breeders’ Cup and she ran well but she’s back on turf now, which I think is her best surface.”

In the American Oaks, run over a fast and slick Hollywood Park turf course, Back-seat Rhythm and regu-lar jockey Javier Castel-lano stayed close to a quick 47-second half-mile. With plenty of speed singed on today, Reynolds is hoping to see his filly reserved off the leaders.

“We sent her out to California and she ran OK, but we kind of took her out of her game out there. We tried to keep her up close to the pace because that’s a fast turf course and she’s a filly that likes to be a little farther back off the pace. She came back little tired and we gave her some time and she’s coming into this really well,” Reynolds said. “Looking at her figures she fits with the horses. It’s a tough field but she’ll run well. We’ve got some speed in there to

chase so we should have a good trip in behind.”Flying Zee Stable’s I Lost My Choo (Edgar Prado to

ride) would have been about 1-5 against fellow New York-breds had last week’s Statue of Liberty Stakes been left on the lawn.

Though she scratched from that spot, her win in the Grade III Virginia Oaks July 19 at Colonial Downs stamps her as a major player in the Lake Placid.

Trained by Phil Serpe, the homebred daughter of Western Expression closed from 18 lengths back to draw off by 1 1/2 lengths over fellow Lake Placid rival Namaste’s Wish. A winner of five of eight life-time starts, I Lost My Choo is the only filly besides

Raw Silk with a victory at 9 furlongs and has shown a number of different gears throughout her career. She stayed on her game after last week’s scratch with a bullet work over the Oklahoma turf Aug. 10 and Serpe is confident, providing Mother Nature cooper-ates.

“We just don’t know about that turf course – how much give is it going to have out there? You just don’t know how that course is going to play with all the rain on it,” he said, “but hopefully it will dry out before the race. We would have rather run last week and be

about 1-5, but she fits with these horses for sure. She came back and worked well (after we scratched her), she always does. We’d actually like to have her come from out of it a little bit. Her races earlier in the year, she kind of fell into a few tough trips and was up close. The race at Co-lonial was a bit odd as there was a horse who really ran off early, but ideally she’ll be in there sitting mid-pack.”

Raw Silk also ventured west for the American Oaks, and the Darley Stable filly checked in eighth, though beaten only 6 lengths after being pressured through quick splits.

Tom Albertrani shifted his filly to the turf in November following a pair of disappointing main-track outings to start her career, and the result was a determined, though ultimately disap-pointing, 1 1/2-length score. Raw Silk made all the running that day but was disqualified and placed second for drift-ing out in the stretch.

Put away for the winter she returned to break her maiden at Aqueduct April 16, again leading gate to wire, this time finishing 5 1/4 lengths clear. Raw Silk made her stakes debut in the $78,000 Gaviola at Belmont May 8, finishing third, then made waves in the Grade II Sands Point May 31, wiring a classy field over good turf at today’s distance. Alan Garcia takes the return call.

Much Obliged ventures south from trainer Malcolm Pierce’s Woodbine base

and rates a long look off of her neck loss in the Grade III Boiling Springs at Monmouth Park June 28. The Pin Oak Stable homebred was beaten edged that day by My Princess Jess, who returned to win the Grade II Lake George here July 25.

Prior to that effort Much Obliged won the American 1000 Guineas at Ar-lington Park.

A beautifully bred daughter of King-mambo out of the Strawberry Road mare Danka, Much Obliged looms a

danger in the stretch under Shaun Bridg-mohan, who’ s 5-for-15 for Pierce over the past two seasons.

Namaste’s Wish chased I Lost My Choo home in the Virginia Oaks, clos-ing from 16 lengths back to finish sec-ond. Trained by Bill Mott for Live Oak Plantation, the daughter of Pulpit last visited the winner’s circle after tak-ing the Belmont’s Miss Grillo Stakes in September but has run well against some of the best 3-year-old turf fillies on the East Coast.

Last summer Mott and jockey Kent Desormeaux took their first Lake Plac-id with Sharp Susan and the duo will try to double up Friday.

Rounding out the Lake Placid field are: Encanto Park (Jorge Chavez), a fringe player in three stakes and today’s potential pacesetter; Rosa Grace (Julien Leparoux), a listed-stakes winner in Eu-rope who makes her first start Stateside; and Zaskar (John Velazquez), 10th after a troubled trip in the American Oaks, her U.S. debut.

July 19 I turned 20. July 21 I packed my bags. On the 22nd I drove to Saratoga. By the evening of the 23rd, it was pretty clear: presenting 20 years at the door of a Saratoga bar is about as worthwhile as pre-senting a two-horse box as a winning trifecta ticket.

The United States tried total prohibition via the 18th amendment in 1920. In 1985, New York State decided that 20-year-olds would no longer qualify to order a drink.

As you know, these plans were highly successful: not a single U.S. citizen consumed alcohol during pro-hibition, and no New Yorker under 21 has ever suc-cessfully ordered a beer in the last 23 years.

I fell asleep that first night in Saratoga to the me-lodic call of the trotters on television. Things needed to change, otherwise the six weeks might emulate an-other era in American history – a personal Great De-pression.

Luckily, in Saratoga, you don’t actually need to en-ter a bar to be part of the scene.

Go downtown any night and you’ll be sure to bump into throngs of rosy-cheeked, giddy people milling in and out of various venues. You can join the millers on the street even if you can’t order a Miller in the Vegas of the racing world unless you’ve had the hap-piest birthday.

Don’t waste your breath trying to sweet-talk your way into these dens of debauchery (I’m not above it, but from personal experience, I advise against it) as you will most likely be unsuccessful (again, personal experience).

But – and trust me when I say this – you don’t need an ID, fake or otherwise, to tear it up ’Toga.

On a recent jaunt around town, I discovered that while Saratoga lacks an underage speakeasy, it has a friendly equivalent: a cavernous coffee spot that caters to coeds. Off the beaten path (on Henry Street, across from The Parting Glass two blocks east of Broadway) is Virgil’s House, a coffee brewery reminiscent of a by-gone era.

The ban at Virgil’s excludes electronics, rather than the underage: you walk in, ditch your cell phone, iPod, laptop and any other sort of PDA that might peeve those around you. Parting with your BlackBerry for an hour is a good thing: not only is it nice to read some-thing that doesn’t require scrolling, clicking or strain-ing your eyes to view treacherously tiny fonts, but also through BlackBerry withdrawal you will discover whether you have a burgeoning addictive personality that could cause trouble when you hit 21.

With a strong cup of coffee in hand (Starbucks has nothing on this java), take in your surroundings and sullenness will begin to fade.

Tucked away in the back corner next to the bar are a variety of board games that practically beg you to indulge your inner child. The cushy, lounge-like atmo-sphere that smells pleasantly of espresso and baked goods provides the perfect backdrop for sober face-to-face conversations that don’t end with “C U L8r.”

An afternoon spent at Virgil’s House is copious amounts of caffeine coupled with a brief respite from technology – the perfect pre-game, classier and less rowdy than your great night out will ever be. (And drink coffee while you still can, you 20-and-under-

somethings, because someday some government may wise up and clamp down on this mind-altering sub-stance as well.)

After a day of dominos and lattes, you should be ready to brave an evening downtown.

Allow me to let you in on a secret – there are two “Caroline Streets.” One Caroline Street consists of various people at various stages of inebriation various distances from their last bar and their next bar. One Caroline is also a destination. It’s the address and the name of a charming hidden gem of a restaurant; a true oasis on a block that needs one.

Here, in this semi-underground institution, you can enjoy the cozy ambiance of a New York City bistro, while taking in a decidedly Saratoga experience. In-stead of the soundalike bands doing their best to ap-proximate Journey’s Greatest Hits, there’s live music every night from local artists, such as rising star Sarah Pedinotti (her family owns One Caroline Street and the nearby Mouzon House).

Sometimes hearkening back to the husky timbre and catchy cadences of jazz singers, Pedinotti’s pa-nache extends into blues, folk and rock. It is undeni-ably good and somehow uniquely Saratoga. Backed by an exceptional band (Dave Payette on keyboards, Tony Markellis on bass, Chris Carey on drums, and Chris Kyle on guitar), Pedinotti is a singer-songwriter who delivers to a diverse crowd with music and lyrics as whimsical, clever and witty as her onstage presence. The free-spirited songstress keeps audiences guessing in a good way – for a taste of the music and a look at the menu, type “onecaroline” into your browser.

One night at One Caroline. That – and $1.65 for a cup of coffee at Virgil’s – gets you a soft landing for the season in Saratoga Springs – a way to lift your spirits without resorting to hard liquor.

The Special’s John Panagot caught up with the reigning king of the NYRA circuit – and one heck of a raconteur – Gary Contessa. Quick:

Try and guess his favorite movie (an-swer below).

favorite horse you’ve ever trained?“A horse named Owen’s Truth. In the

1980s he won a bunch of stakes races in New Jersey. He used to run so hard that he’d pass out as he was pulling up. He won about 10-12 races, but he only

showed up for one win picture. We’d have a guy stand-ing at the middle of the turn with a bucket of ice. Once he pulled up he’d start getting wob-

bly, then he’d pass out. A couple min-utes, he’d get up and then you’d walk him home. He was a hard-trying horse, and the meanest son-of-a-gun you’d ever want to be around. But he was mean and went out there and ran every time. One time he got loose at Garden State Park, and he comes running off the track and he hits a telephone pole head on and that pole goes fffffff . . . boom! Knocked down all the lights at Garden State Park, it was unbeliev-

able, put like 400 stitches in his head. He was back on the track the next day, I couldn’t leave that sucker in the barn longer than the day or two. He was un-believable.”

If you made the hall of fame who presents your plaque to you?

“Frank Martin, he was the toughest man I’ve ever worked for. I thought I was ready to be a trainer when I went to work for him. He showed me how little I knew about training. He probably did more for molding me than any-body.”

Best horse you trained?“Peace Rules. I bought

him as a 2-year-old, I broke his maiden and I sold him to Bobby Fran-kel and he went on

to run third in the Kentucky Derby and win a bunch of Grade I’s. Now he’s a heck of a sire.”

hardest working jockey that’s ever ridden for you in the morning?

“Boy, I’m going to tick off everybody. Hmm . . . Rudy Rodriguez.”

highlight of your career?“Winning the Grade I

Ashland Stakes with Do It With Style (1991). It was great because the night before the race I decided to take the whip away from her. I knew in my heart she didn’t like the whip and she won by a neck. She was the

first 3-year-old filly to win a Grade I without a

whip. If it went the other way I’m sure the press

people would have been saying ‘Why the hell did he take the whip away?’ ”

Best trainer you’ve ever run against?“Neil Howard. He’s the consummate

professional, and the classiest guy I’ve ever met. He’s a helluva horse trainer. When that guy leads a horse over to the races, they’re always ready to run. He’s an incredible gentleman and an incred-ible trainer.”

you’re on american Idol – what song would you be singing?

“It would have to be a Beatles song. I would say ‘Let It Be.’ ”

three things on an island with you?“Have you been asking everybody

that question? Ample fishing equip-ment, a laptop and uhh I don’t know, that’s a tough one.”

favorite movie?“An Officer and a Gentleman.”

favorite meal?“Filet with asparagus.”

If you weren’t a trainer, you would be . . .“A pitcher for the Mets.”

“Woodbine. They treat owners and trainers so well up there.”

Best horse you’ve ever seen:“Seattle Slew.”

Best story you’ve got from racing:“I have a few . . . I used to have a

horse named Allemande. He was like my pet. He won a Grade II at The Meadowlands. I used to let him loose in the shedrow. He’d walk around the barn, visit all the horses and drink his own water. He acted like a person, he was amazing. Toward the end of his career I had to drop him in class, and he got claimed away from me. I’m like, ‘Man I can’t let this horse go, my kids are going to kill me.’

“So he shows up in a claiming race in Detroit for a nickel. So I hired this guy with a van and gave him $5,000, and I send him out to Detroit to claim this horse back for me. He calls me and says, ‘I’m on my way back with Allemande, what do you want me to do with him?’ I say, ‘When are you going to get here?’ He says, ‘Probably around midnight.’ I say ‘Bring him to my house, take him off the van and stick him in my backyard; he’ll be OK back there for a night.

“So he comes all the way back to New Jersey, where I live in a suburban area. So the next morning, the kids wake up and they’re crying, so happy to see him. He’s just hanging out in my backyard. I can’t leave him there – we’ve got a swing set, trees you know?

“So the guy comes to pick him up and put him on a farm so he can retire and make him a riding horse. We can’t get the son-of-a-gun on the van. All the neighbors are out, the cops come, the fire department. I’m by myself; there are no other horse people around. He won’t go on the van, there had to be 50 people in front of my house at eight o’clock in the morning.

“It was really funny, and it was all in good spirits, nobody really got mad. He wound up living a good life and living until like 25.”

who wins the travers?“Music Note, if she runs.”

I walked into the winner’s circle af-ter the sixth race on Whitney Day, July 26, and looked for a little news. The large crowd gathered to take a picture with Joppa Flat’s surprised me. Win-ning trainer Bob Ribaudo was there, but so was Pat Kelly. He seemingly had nothing to do with the race, a simple, 7-furlong maiden race called the Patrick C. Minogue Memorial.

And then I learned the whole story. Kelly and the others came to remember Minogue, the trainer’s former assis-tant who died July 14 at age 48 after a lengthy battle with kidney disease. Mo-ments like that help hammer home the point that there’s more to racing than horses running in a circle.

“It’s life,” said Kelly. “You make friends for life, or what you think is life, and then you get reminded that it’s not forever when things like this happen.”

• • •For a teenager in Floral Park 30 years

ago, there were three main choices for

summer jobs – a paper route, the A&P or Belmont Park. Parents everywhere cringed when their sons chose the third option.

But many of them did. Paddy Mi-nogue and Mike Lynch snuck into Bel-mont in the summer of 1978 and took jobs with Johnny Campo. Instantly in-stalled as hotwalkers, the 17-year-olds

began a lifelong relationship with Thor-oughbred racing. They walked hots, learned the game, and much to their parents’ dismay, accepted summer posi-tions in Saratoga.

“We got off a van at 4 o’clock in the morning and they handed us each a horse,” recalled Lynch recently. “We lived in an 8’ by 10’ cinderblock cell. I’ll never forget the wonderful grooms who took care of us. James Washington, I’ll never forget him – he told everyone there, ‘Those two boys are OK – don’t mess with them.’ ”

Lynch and Minogue were more than OK. They were in teenage heaven. The Oklahoma backstretch, quality horses in the Campo barn, all the action of Saratoga, none of the ties of home.

“What a beautiful experience,” said Lynch. “We had a ball.”

They lived on the backstretch for a few more years, graduated to an off-track home and – eventually – even con-verted their folks.

“Our parents really weren’t thrilled that we started working at the race-track, but as the years went on, we swung them over,” Lynch said, “Now you’d consider them avid fans.”

Lynch became a lawyer and a Thor-oughbred owner (Ruby Rose Stable), but left backside employment to Mi-nogue, who moved from Campo to Kel-ly – eventually rising to assistant trainer. Minogue worked with such stalwarts as Evening Attire, starred on the Kelly’s Heroes softball team and became part of the family. Eventually, he worked as a real estate appraiser, but the horses were his profession.

“He was on the racetrack for 25 years,” said Lynch. “I had a great six years, but it was way too tough for me.”

Minogue was something of a tough guy. He played first base for the He-roes, and considered every game a small war. He dove, he slid, he ran hard, he cared about the result when much of the team just wanted a reason to stop at Esposito’s on the way home. He fol-lowed (rather zealously I was told) the Yankees, the Rangers, the Giants.

“His exploits on the softball field are legendary – he was out of his mind in some ways, but he hated to lose at any-thing,” said Lynch. “He had the mem-ory of an elephant and could remember all the stories from years and years ago when the rest of us couldn’t.”

Lynch and some other friends of Mi-nogue had to tell the stories themselves on Whitney Day 2008 at Saratoga. Mi-nogue fought kidney disease for years, underwent a transplant from his broth-er Mike, had to leave the barn for the appraisal job.

Paddy Minogue felt sick after a fam-ily reunion at Belmont Park in July. He died a few days later.

In addition to a traditional funeral, Minogue’s friends soon thought of a

Saratoga send-off. They paid the fee to name a race, had a table on the rail, stayed all day, posed with Ribaudo in the winner’s circle, went to Siro’s after-ward and remembered.

“It was a nice way to end a 10-day mourning period,” said Lynch. “We had a nice turnout. The Whitney card – he would have loved it, though he probably wouldn’t have wanted all the attention.”

Minogue’s friends and family in the winner’s circle thought about a guy who didn’t want the attention, who followed New York sports, who took a job at Belmont Park one day that changed his life.

“He was the first of our generation to pass on,” said Lynch. “All those people in the winner’s circle for the race are from Floral Park. The racetrack is a great bond that way. For us, the Bel-mont Stakes is a high-school reunion and that’s the last time I saw him. He was a good friend, always had your back.”

Still does.

Ron Kirk had to take off his sport-coat in the Trustees’ Room. Soaked to the bone in sweat, Kirk apologized and draped his coat over the back of a chair. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and shook like a Labrador Retriever af-ter a river swim.

Forgive the man, he was hot – and wound up.

That’s what breeding – and owning – a winner of the Grade II Saratoga Special will do for you.

Co-owners Michael Riordan and John Bates didn’t mind, neither did the NYRA brass. Nobody minds anything in the Trustees’ Room. It’s where winners go.

Run Away And Hide had just upped his record to 3-for-3. And he had done it the right way. The 2-year-old colt chilled in third, then clicked it on when jockey Robby Albarado asked. He wasn’t a typ-ical 2-year-old buzzing 6 1/2 furlongs at Saratoga.

Not that Kirk was surprised. He’s done being surprised by his

homebred colt. Run Away And Hide had a ring to it, but Kirk should have named him Afterthought.

Kirk had two yearlings left from his breeding operation last year. He decided to sell both of them. He sold a Maria’s Mon colt for $150,000. Loved him, but sold him. And then failed to get the job done when it came to selling his yearling by City Zip, soon to be Run Away And Hide.

David Scanlon bought the yearling by Maria’s Mon. Kirk parted with trepida-tion and did what any good horse dealer does, he tried to buy a part of the whole he had just sold. He’s got to be Irish.

“It was a fair price but I liked him well enough that I asked if I could stay in for a leg,” Kirk said. “David had some other partners and politely said no.”

Enter Irishman Peter O’Callaghan who had bought Kirk’s farm in Lexing-ton.

“Why don’t you send your City Zip colt to David Scanlon,” O’Callaghan said. “That way you can keep an eye on both of them.”

Sounds good. A few months go past and Scanlon

calls Kirk. This is where it gets good. “For me, it was truly out of sight, out

of mind,” Kirk said. “Just after the be-ginning of the year, David calls me and leaves a message saying, ‘This horse of yours can really run.’ I call him back and we have about a 30-second conver-sation and I ask, ‘Which sale are you going to put him in?’ He said, ‘I didn’t think you were sell-ing this horse?’ I said, ‘Which horse are you talking about, the Maria’s Mon, right?’ He said, ‘No, I’m talk-ing about the one

you still own.’ ”Forgive a horse owner for being pessi-

mistic, but in this game it’s bad news first and good news occasionally.

Scanlon continued to call Kirk with glowing reports about Run Away And Hide, who did things at Scanlon’s train-ing center that only good horses do.

“But I don’t know David well enough to know if he’s just blowing smoke or whether this horse is the real deal,” Kirk said. “He finally talks me into sending him to Ronny Werner.”

Kirk has campaigned horses with Neil Drysdale, Bill Mott, Shug McGaughey, Tom Amoss, Michael Matz . . . and now Werner.

Scanlon convinced Kirk to utilize Werner. If he wanted to get to Keenel-and, this the guy.

“Ronny calls me the first time he works and says, ‘Mr. Kirk, this horse has some quality,’ ” Kirk said. “About 10 days go by and he calls me again and says, ‘Can you come over for a work on Saturday?’ I had to go out of town so I asked, ‘What’s so special about this work?’ ”

Werner had some company lined up.“He told me about a horse the

McKathan Brothers had, who every-body thought was the fastest thing on the grounds,” Kirk said. “I couldn’t get there. That afternoon, I was talking to Mike Ryan and asked if he was at the works. He said, ‘I didn’t see it but I heard about it.’ ”

Run Away And Hide missed the break, spotted the fastest thing on the grounds 3 lengths and then put her away like winter clothes on the first of April.

“Another day or two,” Kirk said, “I see Scanlon and say, ‘I noticed you sold the $2 million sales-topper here, I saw you sold a $600,000 at Barretts. How did they compare to Run Away And Hide?’ He said, ‘How do you think I knew how fast he was?’ ”
