4 Spring/Summer 2020

Dear Friends:

You probably want to think about anything other than COVID-19 right now. Trust me - we do, too. But we can’t. We can’t think of anything else because we have hundreds of staff working this very moment to keep the people we support, many of whom are considered high risk, safe and healthy, even if that means leaving their own houses and moving into one of ours. We have teams working on delivering virtual and remote services to the individuals we cannot see face to face every day; and others who are delivering supplies, food, personal care items and other necessities to keep individuals from prolonged community exposure. We owe it to them to keep thinking about it and strategizing to best protect the people we support and our employees.

At the onset of COVID-19, panic began to set in around us. However, we knew we had to stay calm and develop a vision and strategy to ease the minds of our community:

• The Vision is to maintain the physical and fiscal health of the people we support, our employees and our organization.• The Strategy is to control what we can in a world where we cannot control much, especially the spread of the virus. But we can

limit the amount of interaction between people and ensure everyone has the recommended personal protective equipment needed to stay safe during the unavoidable interactions.

Our entire operations changed. Within just a matter of a few days, everyone’s jobs looked a little different and 60% of our employees welcomed significant modification to their work duties. Our staff took on these new job duties, hours, and locations with alacrity because we all have the same vision. It is amazing to see 750 people be so nimble and open to change.

We have had some amazing support through this. There have been family members, friends and companies with whom we work that have donated groceries, meals, masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, recreation supplies and more. And, we have already received a few grants from local funders that are helping people we support get through this crisis. The sense of community has never been stronger, and we appreciate that so much.

But even with these donations, we have spent over $50,000 to date on personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies, and other items to accommodate the transition to the safer live-in model that we would not normally spend. We have had to quickly invest in technology to accommodate remote work and virtual services. And, while the live-in model, along with the task force personnel supporting our sites, is helping to reduce the risk of the virus spreading, it has already cost the organization significant additional payroll expenses compared to what we would normally accrue in one pay period. And the really tough part about this all is that we don’t know when it will end.

We are lucky that Marrakech is a stable and well-respected organization in the community. And we know we will get through this and be okay in the end. But we need you now more than ever. If there was ever a time where I had to do a direct ask, it is right now. So, I am asking, or maybe pleading…please donate to Marrakech, in any amount you can. Every little bit helps and will go directly to funding the services and supports needed to get us through this crisis and back to normal again.

Donate now by going to www.marrakechinc.org or by using the envelope provided.

With Gratitude,

Heather LaTorraPresident & CEO

On February 14, 2020, Marrakech held a Valentine’s Day Party hosted by our Power of Voices Self-Advocacy Group as well as our Orangecrest and Osborn teams. A three course meal was provided, along with dancing.

Marrakech Valentine’s Day Dance

Each year, Marrakech participates in the Great Give®, a 36-hour online giving event that supports local nonprofits organized by the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven. This year, the Great Give®, which took place May 5th and 6th, was more important than ever. Due to COVID-19, our regularly scheduled fundraising events for the spring and early summer had to be cancelled. However, our sponsors and supporters really came through for us! Marrakech had 95 donors participate, helping us raise more than $33,000, which made up for the loss we would have otherwise absorbed from the event cancellations. Thank you to our Match sponsors, L.H. Brenner/Thompson & Peck, Inc., Hancock Pharmacy, and Alera Group, who helped double donations by matching donors dollar for dollar; and to our Social Media Sponsor, Alert Security, who donated $1 for each new Facebook like we received during the campaign. And, as always, thank you to our donors and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.

Staff RecognitionEach quarter, staff are recognized for going above and beyond their job duties by our staff recognition committee. The following individuals and programs were recently recognized by both the ARC Angels and staff recognition committee:

Creative Sector Relief Funds Awarded to East Street Arts Caning ArtistsIn an effort to provide income to caning artists during the pandemic, East Street Arts applied for a small grant from the New Haven Creative Sector Relief Fund, a partnership between the City of New Haven’s Department of Cultural Affairs and the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. Thanks to the generosity of those who donated to the New Haven Creative Sector Relief Fund, they were able to provide East Street Arts with $500 in financial assistance. These funds were directly passed on to the caning artists.

The Greater New Haven Creative Sector Relief Fund distributes immediate financial assistance to low-income individual creatives and small-budget arts institutions most impacted by the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). For more information, visit: www.newhavenarts.org/relieffund

In early April, Marrakech received $10,000 from the Greater New Haven COVID-19 Community Fund, a joint effort between the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and United Way of Greater New Haven to provide flexible support for organizations working to respond to issues resulting from the pandemic. Marrakech was able to use these funds to provide groceries, cleaning supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE) and personal care products to individuals living on their own in the greater New Haven community, who often have both high-risk statuses and economic disadvantages. Marrakech’s essential task force workers delivered these packages to 50 individuals once every two weeks. Besides wanting to limit the amount of potential exposure incidents individuals may experience while shopping, the increased price on food and cleaning supplies placed severe limits on what was affordable within their existing budgets. Many rely on community donations to meet their basic needs when we are not in a pandemic, which can be sporadic at best. Having these funds during the initial months of COVID-19 provided a level of comfort for 50 people; they knew they would have enough food to eat, their homes would be clean, and they were able to keep themselves protected and safe when needed.

COVID-Relief Funds Received from CFGNH

Marrakech received $11,000 from the Yale Community for New Haven fund, which supports the delivery of healthcare, nonprofit assistance to local businesses, community educational needs, and area not-for-profits focused on such pressing issues as the well-being of children and families, homelessness, and food insecurity. Marrakech is using these funds to support approximately 100 individuals in New Haven who are currently homeless and/or disconnected from local treatment services as well as youth between the ages of 16 and 21 connected to DCF services, many of whom are in foster care. We are assembling and distributing care packages that contain such items as disposable and reusable masks, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, gloves, disinfecting wipes, and a large shoulder-strap bag to hold these items, which is especially important for individuals who are homeless or who are without a stable residence.
