Thank you to PAC for our very successful Mugs and Muffins welcome on opening day. Many parents were able to send their child off to school and enjoy a coffee and muffin and then socialize with other parents about their summer. We had several new families that registered in August and it was a pleasure to see our Peachland Community welcome them with open arms. Our classes were once again very balanced and we had very little student movement. Everyone appeared to adjust quite quickly to their new class, new teacher, and their new classmates. This is largely due to the extensive discussions and input that teachers and parents gave back in June. At our opening day assembly, we made introductions, reviewed our student code of conduct, and introduced our "I Believe…." theme for this year. We encourage you to become involved in your child's education and take part in the many school activities that happen throughout the year. Hope to see you soon; our doors are always open Reminder: Fun Lunch days are Tuesdays

PEACHLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OCTOBER 2012 NEWSLETTER

School Goals: 1) To increase students’ skills at impromptu writing from one proficiency level to the next profiency level 2) To increase students’ skills at reading from one proficiency level to the next proficiency level.

On Monday, September 24th, students, staff, and parents held an assembly in the Peachland Gymnasium focused on Terry Fox's life and his accomplishments to support cancer research. A short vid-eo was shown to students, staff and parents to remind us how hard Terry worked to raise the awareness of how cancer impacts all people, young and old. Students supported Terry's dream by do-nating Pennies on Monday, Nickels On Tuesday, Dimes on Wednesday, Quarters on Thursday, and Loonies/Toonies on Friday; September 28th the Peachland School Community ran in support of Terry and families that have been impacted by Cancer. A total of how much Peachland Elementary school raised in support of Cancer Research will be announced in the November’s

Newsletter.

HEADS UP

The fall tends to be a season for head lice. Please be vigilant in checking your child’s hair, particularly behind the ears and at the hairline. It is also important to remind your child not to share their hat or head gear with other students. If you need more information, please call the West Kelowna Heath Unit at 250-768-6150 or www.safehealthschools.org

INTRAMURALS

We would like to thank Ben McGillivray for volunteering his time to support an Intramural Program at Peachland

Elementary School. Ben will be coming in once a week (on Wednesdays) to supervise and open up our gymnasium for students to be actively engaged in physical activity during lunch time. Grades will be announced weekly as the year progresses.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

Thank you to all who have volunteered their time at school.

The response has been absolutely amazing! Teachers will

call on an at-need basis as per your volunteer interests.

Reminder that when volunteering at the school, please

report to the office, sign in, and pick up a volunteer badge.

All volunteers MUST complete a Criminal Record Check

Application Form that can be picked up in the

school office. (Criminal record checks are

processed yearly, but you only need to complete

the forms once.

PAC FUN LUNCH PROGRAM This PAC sponsored program begins the first Tuesday of October. Thank you to Rheanna Parry and Jodi Nygaard Peterson for working together to coordinate the program this year. CALLING IN ALL CANADIAN TIRE MONEY

Peachland Elementary School PAC is once again doing a fantastic fundraiser that will benefit our school. The Peachland PAC is asking all parents and community members to please send in their Canadian Tire Money to the school. Once the students have placed their Canadian Tire Money in the box in the office, they will have an opportunity to complete a form so they are eligible to win some random prizes. All money generated will go to purchasing athletic equipment for the school. This will be a great opportunity for our students to remain active during recess and lunch and meet the requirements of 30 minutes of physical activity each day.

School Bus Behaviour

Please review the following expectations for your children on the bus:

Students are to sit facing the front of the bus

Respect others (no teasing) ; (listen to the bus driver)

Behave responsibly (share the seats)

Use an inside voice

School Goals: 1) To increase students’ skills at impromptu writing from one proficiency level to the next profiency level 2) To increase students’ skills at reading from one proficiency level to the next proficiency level.

School District Staff

In addition to our regular staff, we have several School District #23 personnel who visit the school. These include a school psychologist, speech, vision and hearing specialist, and behavior specialists. Our Public Health nurse also visits the school to coordi-nate health records and immunization programs.

Fire Prevention Week

October 8th—12th is Fire Prevention Week. Following the tradition of past years, a ―Fire Chief for the Day‖ will be selected from our primary classes to represent our school at Kelowna Fire Hall on October 10th. On October 10th, the Peachland Fire Department will pick up the ―Fire Chief for the Day‖ and drive them to and from school in the Peachland Fire Truck. Peach-land Fire Department is also providing students with a fire alarm checklist that can be completed with their parents. If students return this checklist, they will also have an opportunity to win a sweatshirt. We hold 6 fire drills per year, 3 in the fall and 3 in the spring at our school. Parents and visitors at the school during drills will be included in the practice.

Volley ball Our school will be fielding a boys’ and a girls’ team for the 2012 volleyball season. Thank you to Mrs. Poole, Mrs. Pendergast and Mr. Guignard for coaching these two teams. The Grade 6 program is a developmental program with some game play with other elementary school teams. All coaching is done on a voluntary basis and is much appreciated. If there is a parent that is wanting to assist the coaches, please contact the coaches above.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP The students at Peachland Elementary have been giv-en the opportunity to volunteer for leadership positions in the school. We would like to thank all of these students for taking the time out of their day to take on responsibilities associated with running various school activities. The support of our classroom teachers is also appreciated. Without their sponsorship, these leadership opportunities would not exist. We are look-ing forward to a fun filled year with student-led activities.

PERSONAL BELONGINGS AT SCHOOL

On occasion, students bring valuable, personal property to

school. They do this at their own risk. We discourage

students from bringing cell phones, camera’s, IPOD’s,

gameboys, etc. to avoid the risk of these items getting

damaged or lost. Remember that school district policy

states that students are not permitted to use their phones

at school. If parents find an emergent situation where it

is necessary to make contact with their child, they may do

so by calling the school office.

Fall is upon us and winter not too far behind. Please en-

sure that your children are dressed appropriately for the

weather so that they can play comfortably outside for up to

half an hour. Students are usually dropped off by busses

at 8:00 a.m. and required to play outside until 8:30 a.m.

The mornings can be quite chilly; please provide and en-

courage them to wear warm jackets, hats or hoods, and

perhaps even mittens.

School Goals: 1) To increase students’ skills at impromptu writing from one proficiency level to the next profiency level 2) To increase students’ skills at reading from one proficiency level to the next proficiency level.

Halloween is just around the corner and the excitement is upon us. Here are some guidelines to ensure that the festivities do not take away too much instructional time.

1. Please do not allow your child to bring treats to school to distribute to other students. Many parents choose to restrict the amount sugar and other processed items consumed by their children. In addition, many students have food allergies.

2. Students may bring one treat on the day following Halloween to eat themselves, with their lunch.

3. Treats are not to be consumed at snack time.

4. Students are encouraged to wear costumes or dress in orange and black on WEDNESDAY October 31st . Costumes may not include blood or other gory items, nor any weapons or play weapons. Masks may not be worn at school. Students may not apply make-up at school. Please ensure that your child can put on and take off his/her costume

with minimal help or disruption to the day.

5. We will be having a parade of primary students in costumes right after lunch (around 12:05)

TREATS AT SCHOOL

PEACHLAND STRONG START

Come in and see the great fun 3-4 year old

children are doing at StrongStart. Open

Monday to Friday from 8:45 to 11:45, this is a

FREE parent participation program, where

parents and caregivers are likely to discover

new ways to support their children’s learning at

home, and may make valuable connections with

others attending the program.

Children play in wonderful activities lead by our

Early Childhood Educator, Monica De Leon.

They will enjoy a healthy nutritional snack and

StrongStart helps them get ready for

success in kindergarten.

Emergency Procedures

We have been practicing our emergency safety procedures at school. The students and staff take these drills very seriously and we are confident that they are aware of what to do during the various emergencies. To date, we have had 2 fire drills. Please take the time to talk to your child about these safety drills. October 8th—12th is Fire Prevention week and the students and staff will continue to discuss these procedures. If you have any questions or comments, please contact your child’s teacher or Mr. Guignard

F.O.I.P.O.P Issues

As this is the beginning of the school year, the staff has noticed some

parents around the school with cameras and video-cameras. Please

note that due to the FOIPOP regulations and privacy/safety of our

students, we need you to ask the teacher or office prior to showing up

at the school to take pictures. Freedom of Information and Protection

of Privacy asks for approval to have students’ names or photographs in

school related publications. It is very possible that you will not be

allowed to capture the activity in the classroom or on the playground.

Thank you for your understanding with this issue.

TRAFFIC ALERT—

NO PARKING IN THE LOOP

We are asking parents to NOT utilize the bus loop to drop off or pick up your child. Please park on Clements Cres. and walk across the school crosswalk to enter the school grounds. This will limit the amount of congestion in the bus loop and provide a safer environment for our students. Please use our school crosswalk. Because of limited parking and an in-crease in staff, please do not park in staff parking lot. THANK YOU!!

PUTTING YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD Student behaviour expectations at Peachland Elementary School are to: Respect Yourself, Respect Others, and Respect Property and the Environment. Teachers and Noon Hour Supervisors have recognized that many of our students follow these expectations very well. When Staff see students demonstrate these expectations, they will reward the student with a ―Foot Award‖ certificate. Students then will fill out their name and place the certificate in the foot award box that is located in the office. At the end of the week, Mr. Guignard will randomly pick 10 names and announce them over the P.A.. These students will be invited to the office to pick up their ―Foot Award‖ and their ―Attitude‖ trophy. The plastic feet can be collected and placed on their shoe laces. As well, these 10 student names will be recognized and placed in the next month’s newsletter.

We understand that morning can be quite hectic to say the least. It has been reported to the office that many parents are not obeying the speed limit in the school zone. Please be aware that when cars are parked up and down the street, that visibility of the children is reduced and students may run out between parked cars.
