reserveagame.com comes to Reading

New Tennis Reservation Platform Comes to Reading

The Town of Reading is excited to announce a partnership with reserveagame.com, a one of a kind, on-line reservation platform service, for tennis courts in Reading! This new added service will allow tennis afectionado’s the option to reserve court times on-line in advance.

“This was a good opportunity to enhance the tennis players’ experience in town. This is basically an added service, along with our priority pass program to make playing tennis in Reading more convenient” said Recreation Director John Feudo.

For the past decade, the Town has actively worked with the Capital Improvements Budget to enhance many recreational facilities around Reading. The Reading Community Tennis Courts have become one of the most used facilities around. These courts are a self-funded facility. The nets, lights, evening monitors and general repairs are currently paid for by the Recreation Division through donations from Friends of Reading

Tennis, program fees and revenue generated from the priority pass program. Currently the cost to operate the lights alone is

over $5000 annually. In 2012, the Recreation Division introduced the Priority Pass & Monitor program for the first time. The genesis of the program was to, first and foremost, help with the player traffic on the popular courts. “The fees for the passes were mainly set to help offset the costs of the monitors” said Feudo. “We tried hard to come up with a creative way to off-set some of our costs associated with tennis” he added.

The online reservation program seemed like a great way to enhance the

tennis program. While it’s considered a service, folks that opt to use it, can pay a small fee of $5 to reserve court time at a specific location. Of course, the tennis priority passes will still be used exclusively for the peak season at the Community Courts. Court Reservations will begin in May. For more information about the Tennis Priority Pass Program and Reserveagame.com visit the Reading Recreation website at www.readingrec.com.

Renowned Youth Sports Speaker Comes to Reading!

Bob Bigelow is one of the foremost lecturers in the country regarding the needs of children in youth sports, and using common-sense approaches to those needs.

Bob is a former NBA first round draft choice and four-year player. He played collegiately at the University of Pennsylvania for Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Daly. He has devoted several thousand hours researching and lecturing about organized youth sports and

its effect on children and adults. Since 1993, he has conducted over 600 talks throughout the country.

This talk is educational, challenging, motivational and humorous. “I have attended Bob’s talk several times” says Recreation Director John Feudo. “His message is one that needs to be heard by anyone that has kids playing sports or is coaching

our youth” he added.

Bob’s mission is to put the youth back in youth sports. He has received widespread media attention - Sports Illustrated, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, WEEI Radio amongst many more.

As an adult involved in youth sports, ask yourself two questions; “Why do my kids play?” and “What are my motivations for being involved, or not? Whether you are satisfied or uncomfortable with your answers, please attend this thought provoking forum. It delivers a crucial message that adults involved in youth sports must hear.

We’ve teamed up with Wicked Cool for Kids, for those interested in exploring and investigating the natural world around us. Nature Explores will be offered for kids entering K-5th grade. This active

OUTDOOR RECREATION - READY TO LAUNCHgroup will spend the week learning about glaciers, climate change and how to protect our planet’s natural resources, along with growing plants and vegetables and learning about fur, fangs and feathers! Mattera Cabin will be our host for a number of

programs that utilize the wonderful trails of Bare Meadow Conservation Area. Keep your eye out for a series of StoryWalks offered in partnership with Reading Public Library, an Art and Nature Camp with Creative Arts and workshops on outdoor photography, mapping and orienteering, interpretative nature treks and bird watching and journaling.

Second Annual Walk Reading Weekend -- May 30th and 31st, 2015The second annual Walk Reading Weekend will take place on May 30th and 31st: Anytime on that weekend, all of Reading is invited to get outside and take a walk, bike, hike or run to explore our town. Sponsored by Walkable Reading, Reading’s Trails Committee, and Reading Open Land Trust, Walk Read-ing Weekend promotes the exploration of Reading, builds community spirit and improves the health of our citizens.

All you need to do to participate in Walk Reading Weekend is: Put on something red – a scarf, a shirt, a belt, a sash, a ribbon, or anything red - and step out of your door and enjoy and explore Reading by foot or by bike. Then when you get back, report your travels. Last year we tallied up the miles reported and the total was 335.5 miles. That means that collectively we walked/biked/ran/hiked beyond Reading VT (146 miles), beyond Redding CT (169 miles) and almost to Reading, Pennsylvania (344 miles)!! Maybe this year we will get to Redding, CA – after all, that’s only 3081 miles. We can do it!

More information will follow in the weeks to come, on the Town website, in the Community Connection and local newspapers about organized walks in which you can participate, how to report your miles, and much more. For more information contact Walkable Reading by email – [email protected]. And don’t forget to get out there now. For some ideas, see Walkable Reading’s and the Trails Committee’s pages on the Town website for Neighborhood Walks and Trail maps.

PARKOUR CLINIC FOR AGES 8-14

Parkour was born in the banlieus (suburbs) of Paris in the 1980’s and is now one of the fastest-growing sports. While often recognized in the fantastic imag-es seen on YouTube or television, the sport is actually a form of movement that has roots in a wide variety of physical disciplines including gymnastics, martial arts, climbing, and track & field. Practitioners, known as traceurs, train to develop strength, speed, endurance, precision, spatial awareness, dynamism, and creativity in order to be as fluid, functional and liberated as pos-sible in a physical movement and to overcome physi-cal obstacles. Traceurs also develop a way of thinking based on rigorous self-discipline, autonomous action and self-will that allows them to overcome mental ob-stacles related to their movements. We are hoping that this introductory five-day clinic will peak your in-terest in this dynamic sport.

Reading Police Department

The Police Department provides many programs to the community free of charge. We supplement some of the expenses through Community Policing Grants. Many of these programs are contingent upon the grants themselves. The Reading Police Department will always respond to your calls.

Citizens Police Academy Lt. David Stamatis @ 781-942-6763http://readingma.vt-s.net/police-department/pages/citizens-police-academy

The Academy gives the residents of Reading an opportunity to learn more about what the police department does on a daily basis. With public support and understanding so essential to law enforcement, the Citizen Police Academy has proven to be an excellent program to bring the community and law enforcement together for common goals.

The overall goal of the Citizen Police Academy is, “Understanding through Education”. This is accomplished by the exchange of information from the citizen participants and law enforcement instructors of the class. There are classes given in domestic violence, dispatch procedures, community policing, accident investigation, patrol procedures, O.U.I. arrests, firearms, fingerprinting and other law enforcement related topics. An officer ride-along program will be scheduled for students upon completion of the academy.

The class size will be limited to 25 students and applications can be picked up at the police station or filled out online at http://www.ci.reading.ma.us/Pages/ReadingMA_Police/programs/index

The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System is a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progression on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. This system is dedicated to teaching women defense concepts and techniques against various types of assault, by utilizing easy, effective and proven self-defense/martial art tactics. This system of realistic defense will provide women with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance. The course consists of four 4–hour sessions. No classes are currently scheduled. Please check the Reading Police website for any future updates.

Traffic Safety Speed TrailerSafety Officer David Savio @ 781-942-6775

The Reading Police Department’s speed trailer is a great way to help lower vehicle speeds on problem roadways. The device has a built in radar unit that is connected to a large flashing signboard. The flashing speed makes drivers more aware of their travel speeds and slows traffic down. If your neighborhood could benefit from this device, please contact the Safety Officer David Savio for more information.

The Recreation Division offers a Massachusetts ParksPass Hangtag which Reading residents can borrow and use to park free at any of the 50+ Outdoor Recreation areas in the state. The ParksPass is available for residents to borrow on a first-come, first serve basis. Residents must come down to the Recreation Division at Town Hall to borrow and sign out the Pass for a 24-hour period Monday through Wednesday or on Thursday for the weekend.
