Madibeng se krag bly aan, maar...“Eskom het ŉ punt bereik waar hy nie meer elektrisiteit sonder betaling kan verskaf nie” - Brian Molefe

BRITS POS - BRITS - Eskom se elektrisiteitstoevoer na die Madibeng plaaslike munisipaliteit sal voorlopig nie opgeskort word, nadat ‘n betalingsooreenkoms verlede week tussen dié twee rolspelers gesluit is nie.

Volgens Brian Molefe, waarnemende uitvoerende hoof van Eskom, moet die munisipaliteit egter deurgaans maandeliks voldoen aan die betalingsooreenkoms. “Indien daar nie aan die voorwaardes voldoen word nie, sal die kragtoevoer sonder enige verdere kennis-gewing onderbreek word.”

Eskom het verlede week betalings-ooreenkomste gesluit met 10 van die 20 munisipaliteite wat agterstallige rekenings het. Die 20 munisipaliteite het Eskom nagenoeg R3,68-miljard geskuld.

Die 10 munisipaliteite wat betalingsooreenkomste met Eskom bereik het, sluit in: Madibeng plaaslike munisipaliteit (sluit Brits, Hartebeespoort en Pelindaba in); Thabazimbi plaaslike munisipaliteit (sluit Northam en Thabazimbi in); Matlosana plaaslike

munisipaliteit (sluit Stilfontein, Orkney en Klerksdorp in); die Nama Khoi plaaslike munisipaliteit in die in die Noord-Kaap; die Vrystaatse munisipaliteite Nketoana, Nala, Dihlabeng en Naledi; asook Randfontein en

Westonaria in Gauteng.Molefe het gesê die organisasie het ŉ punt bereik waar hy nie meer elektrisiteit sonder betaling kan verskaf nie. “Ons is tevrede met die 10 munisipaliteite wat hul kant bring om seker te maak dat hulle die skuld delg en ons doen ŉ beroep op die ander 10 munisipaliteite om in hul spoor te volg.”

Eskom het ook openbare kennisgewings van kragonderbrekings aan munisipaliteite in Mpumalanga en die Vrystaat gestuur wat nog agterstallige skuld het. Die betrokke munisipaliteite sluit in: Emalahleni, Govan Mbeki, Lekwa en Msukaligwa (almal in Mpumalanga in) en Maluti-a-Phofung, Matjhabeng en Ngwathe (almal in die Vrystaat). “Eskom verseker Suid-Afrika dat kragonderbrekings slegs ingestel word wanneer alle ander opsies oorweeg is,” het Molefe bygevoeg. “Eskom werk nou saam met die betrokke nasionale en provinsiale departemente

deur plaaslike en nasionale strukture om die munisipale skuld-delgingsproses te bestuur.”

Eskom het beurtkrag sowat ‘n maand gelede ingestel en volgens minister Lynne Brown kan kragonderbrekings vir twee jaar, en selfs langer duur.

Die elektrisiteitstoevoer na 10 (van 20) munisipaliteite word voorlopig gehandhaaf, nadat betalingsoo-reenkomste verlede week met Eskom gesluit is.

Amplats to axe 474 jobsBRITS POS - BRITS - Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) said it will retrench 474 workers as part of a restructuring plan started in 2013.

According to Mpumi Sithole, Amplats spokesperson, 774 employees from the initial 1 248 had been placed in permanent jobs to date. “We have been working closely with Amcu representatives at the mine to ensure that all alternative measures are explored to avoid the possible terminations, but unfortunately not all employees could be offered permanent jobs,” he said.

“The remaining 474 affected employees will therefore qualify for voluntary separation packages and other benefi ts as per the collective agreement with the unions,” Sithole said.

Amplats announced their restructuring plans in January 2013, when it estimated it would cut as many as 14 000 positions. The proposals were scaled back following pressure from government and unions. “Amplats is aware that this is a diffi cult time for affected employees. Over the last few weeks, we have been communicating with the unions and the affected employees, as well as the communities - through the Rustenburg Community Engagement Forum - on the retrenchment process and we commit ourselves to continue to engage with all the relevant parties,” Sithole said.

Employees at Anglo American Pla num led by union Amcu went on strike for two weeks star ng 27 September the same year before a compromise was reached with the company.

According to Kerri the hen’s condition was extremely serious and during an operation its wing had to be amputated.

“The operation (and amputation) on the hen was a success,” she said. “The wound itself

was ugly and already infected by maggots. The team’s performance, however, was excellent and they have to be congratulated. The bird is in rehabilitation and recuperating as expected - although now without one wing.”

Injured vulture hen’s wing amputatedBRITS POS - BRITS - An injured vulture hen’s wing had to be amputated at VulPro outside Hartbeespoort after the bird collided with an Eskom line in the Eastern Cape, reports Tallie Taljard.

According to Kate Webster from the farm Rookwood near Queenstown the incident was reported to her by a farmer in the Upper Cathcart area.

Kate told Brits Pos that she collected the injured vulture, which had clearly collided with the running earth wires on the 400Kv transmission Eskom line and noticed immediately that the bird’s wing had snapped.

“I informed Kerri Wolter (Founder/Manager at VulPro) immediately and upon looking at the injury realized that she (Kerri) had specialized vets up her way to deal with the fractured wing,” Kate said.

“Kerri immediately contacted DHL and organized to drop off the transport crate at Rosslyn Depot to be brought down to Port Elizabeth. I then treated the wound as best I could without traumatising the bird too much. I also injected her with an antibiotic and vitamin booster (which I repeated for the next few days while it was in my care).

“DHL in PE contacted me and we organized to have the bird collected. DHL with Colin Loots drove up from PE with their small bakkie and the crate - about a four-hour trip - to collect the hen, which was later transported to Kerri and her team up north. The DHL staff were great as they kept

BRITS POS - BRITS - Twee persone is die afgelope naweek tragies in afsonderlike ongelukke in die Skeerpoort-omgewing oorlede.

Loanne Louw, woordvoerder van die Hartbeespoort Noodreddingseenheid (HBP), het aan Brits Pos gesê een persoon is verlede Saterdagmiddag oorlede en nog vyf ander, insluitend twee kinders, beseer in ‘n ongeluk tussen twee voertuie en ‘n voetganger in die Skeerpoort-omgewing.

“Een van die voertuie was nie meer op die toneel met HBP se aankoms nie. Die oorledene was ‘n insittende in die een voertuig,” het Loanne gesê. “Drie van beseerdes het onder meer hoof- en borsbeserings, moontlike rugbeserings en frakture opgedoen. Die twee kinders het ook ernstige beserings opgedoen met een wat ‘n diep wond op die rug gehad het en die ander ‘n moontlike gebreekte skouer. Al die beseerdes is vir behandeling na die Brits Distrikshospitaal geneem.

Volgens Loanne is ‘n fi etsryer

Sondagoggend tragies op ‘n grondpad in Skeerpoort oorlede ná verbete pogings om sy lewe te red. “Die ryer was deel van ‘n groep fi etsryers en het volgens inligting op die toneel aan mede-ryers gesê dat hy nie lekker voel nie waarna hy sy bewussyn verloor het. Die span van HBP Noodredding het alle pogings aangewend om sy lewe te red, maar hy is op die toneel oorlede.”

# ‘n Man wat hiper-allergies is vir bye is Saterdagmiddag na Mediclinic Brits geneem nadat hy by die Roodekoppiesdam deur ‘n swerm bye toegetakel is. Die ambulans het die man op die Thabazimbipad uit privaat vervoer oorgeneem toe hy reeds in ‘n kritieke toestand was. Na behandeling het hy volkome herstel.

# ‘n Fietsryer het ernstige beserings opgedoen in ‘n ongeluk met ‘n voertuig in Carel de Wetweg, Brits, Sondagoggend. Hy het

moontlike hoofbeserings opgedoen en is vir behandeling na die Brits Distrikshospitaal geneem.

# Een persoon is Sondagaand met ligte beserings na die Brits Distrikshospitaal geneem ná ‘n ongeluk naby die weegbrug net buite Majakaneng. Nog mense is in die ongeluk tussen drie voertuie beseer, maar het vervoer na ‘n hospitaal geweier.

# Volgens Netcare 911 is ses mense Sondagoggend op die R24 naby Magaliesburg beseer toe ‘n motor van agter teen ‘n sekuriteisvoertuig gebots het.

Paramedici het met hulle aankoms op die toneel ses mense langs die pad gevind, twee van hulle met ernstige beserings. Nadat die beseerdes op die toneel gestabiliseer is, is hulle vir verdure behandeling na ‘n hospitaal vervoer.

North West Province in for a name change?BRITS POS - BRITS - The North West Provincial Legislature has adopted a house resolution for changing the province’s name.

This follows the sitting of the legislature last Tuesday, which adopted the resolution. The move follows a notice of motion tabled in the legislature sitting of 21 April for a debate on the the change of name. The motion was then debated at the house sitting two days later, where the Speaker of the Legislature, Sussana Dantjie, deferred the adoption of the resolution to the next sitting.

During the sitting, an adoption of the resolution was made but the matter was decided by a vote through a secret ballot system.

“For the resolution to be adopted as a house resolution, it required a two-thirds majority of members in support of the adoption of name change as per Section 104 (2) of Chapter 6 of the Constitution,” the offi ce of the Speaker said. “Twenty-two members voted in

support of the adoption of the resolution, while fi ve voted against such an adoption.”

The Speaker announced that the house resolution will be sent to Parliament for further processing and engagements. Further processes will include the matter being referred to a committee that will start the public participation processes and may ultimately lead to the amendment of the Constitution to refl ect the new name of the province.

Shades of Marikana come to haunt BASFGerman giant slammed for Lonmin es BRITS POS - BRITS - The Marikana tragedy has resurfaced to haunt German chemical giant BASF for its use of Lonmin as its principal source of platinum.

A 2012 clash between strikers and the police at Lonmin’s Marikana mine left 34 protesters dead. The fi ndings of an inquiry into the shootings have yet to be published. Now the tragedy is highlighting the challenge facing multinationals to control suppliers and promote humanitarian measures.

BASF uses platinum, palladium and rhodium in its catalytic converters, which are used in cars. The company brought €450-million (R6-billion) worth of precious metals from Lonmin in 2014 and has had a close relationship for about 30 years, BASF says. CEO Kurt Bock (also a board member of the UN Global Compact) rejected calls at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting last week to contribute to a fund to support the families of the dead strikers.

Johannes Seoka, a South African Anglican bishop, posed questions that were read out in German by Markus Dufner of the Association of Ethical Shareholders Germany. The world’s biggest chemical company should “take responsibility as Lonmin’s principle customer” and make preparation payments

to the families of the miners, Seoka said. “BASF, based in Ludwigshafen, Germany, should also look into the housing and working conditions around Lonmin’s mines where many workers live without running water or electricity. Lonmin, the world’s third biggest platinum producer by volume, bore some of the responsibility of the deaths.”

The issue stresses the diffi culties companies have with controlling their sources of components for their products.

IPhone maker Apple hired a watchdog to inspect working conditions at factories after suicides at its Chinese partner Foxconn Technology Group in 2010.

“You can be sure that we know how platinum is obtained and what the conditions in the mines in South Africa are,” Bock said. “But it’s really diffi cult for us to make judgements here from a distance. There had been ‘repeated very long and very intensive labour disputes’ at South African mines in recent years. I can’t imagine that BASF can approve, or tolerate, such conduct by one of its suppliers.” (Source: Bloomberg).

Listing to divest assetsBRITS POS - BRITS - Anglo American favours a listing of some SA platinum mines as the most likely route to divesting those assets.

Platinum has been a problem for some time, due to recurrent strikes and stubbornly weak prices.

Amplats said earlier that it would divest several assets, including some in Rustenburg, which was at the centre of a fi ve-month strike last year. This is part of a plan to switch to more mechanised mining. “We are still in negotiations with some parties regarding a potential trade sale but from our point of view, at this stage, the preferred option is an IPO,” CE Mark Cutifani said at the company’s annual general meeting, referring to a stock market listing. Anglo’s sale price expectations are struggling to meet the offers from the potential buyers, according to sources familiar with the process. SA precious metals mining fi rms Sibanye Gold and Northam Platinum as well as community-owned fi rm Baroka Platinum are among the parties which have shown interest in buying some of

Tydens die byeenkoms was daar ‘n kunsuitstalling van Joan Jansen. Joan is ook die VLU se kunstenaar van die jaar en skilder pragtige realistiese skilderye.

Die gasspreker tydens die geleentheid was Paul Kruger, die vervaardiger van die gewilde rolprente Liefl ing, Pretville en die splinternuwe Frensh Toast. Hy het die dames meer oor die fynere kunsies van rolprent-bedryf vertel.

Volgens Linda Visser, voorsitter van die tak is hulle baie trots op Elaine Smit, een van Brits se lede wat onlangs as voorsitter van die Platina Streek verkies is. “Om haar geluk te wens het ek namens die tak ‘n pragtige potplant aan haar oorhandig,” het Linda gesê. “Ons neem ook met groot hartseer afskeid van Susan Wolvaardt, wat vir die afgelope 11 jaar ‘n lojale lid van die Brits tak was. Sy verhuis eersdaags na Natal en ons wens haar en haar gesin alle sterkte toe.”

Die amptelike basaar-aktiwiteite begin reeds vroeg Saterdagoggend

wanneer daar kwaliteit vleis en vars groente teen die billikste pryse gekoop kan word. Tradisioneel en net soos die Hervormers dit kan doen, word daar ‘n groot verskeidenheid eetgoed soos pannekoek, vetkoek, hamburgers, kerrie-en-rys en natuurlik tuisgebakte koeke, terte, koekies en koeksisters te koop aangebied.

Jaques Ludick ‘n knap stoeier van Hoërskool Brits het onlangs aan die Suid-Afrikaanse stoei-kampioenskappe deelgeneem en is as algehele wenner in sy ouderdomsgroep aangewys. Early birthday present for RoryBRITS POS - BRITS - The world’s number one golfer, Rory McIlroy gave himself an early birthday present with victory in the WGC-Cadillac Match Play in San Francisco on Sunday. He turned 26 on Monday.

McIlroy defeated Gary Woodland 4&2 in the fi nal at Harding Park, his third win of the day after he completed victory over Paul Casey in the quarter-fi nals and produced a brilliant fi nish to get the better of Jim Furyk in the last four.

The 100 kilometre qualifying race to determine grid positions will start at 11:30 on Friday and the race, to be run over two 160 kilometre loops with a 20 minute service halt after the fi rst lap, will start at 08:30 on Saturday.
