ily! Are you getting ready for a big move? Are your kids taking the

transition harder than you thought? Moving is already one of life’s more stressful events – but believe it or not, it can be even harder on kids who may have only lived in one home before. Whether they’re leaving neighborhood playmates or friends at school, it can be intimidating, confusing and even scary. If you’re making the leap to a new city, or are just moving across the street, help your kids (and you too!) make the most fun out of your move with a few ideas.

Out with the old – in with the new!Let your kids get creative with their new rooms. Help them personalize theirs by adding an accent color to the wall. Or, if you’re willing to paint the room, let them have a say in what color scheme they might like. (Tip: you might need to resell later, so think about a paint color that would appeal to buyers.) Once the moving van arrives, let them have a say in how they want their furniture arranged. Their involvement in the process takes their mind off the old room and allows them to pour their energy into the new!

Explore the Great Outdoors!Your new Neighborhood will most likely have new parks, stores, restaurants and popular hang-out spots. Walk around the block to get the kids familiar with the area (and set boundaries). Then let them pick out a nearby restaurant and maybe you’ll even find a new family favorite!

A New State of Mind!Change is always hard, and it’s especially hard for kids who don’t always understand why it must happen. Set the tone for a fantastic transition by leading with a great mindset. Talk about all the new, exciting and fun activities that will be available to your kids when they get into the new home.

Communication is Key!Some children are more vocal than others and will willingly display their feelings about the move. Others are shy. Make sure you give your kids the opportunity to express their hesitations, frustrations and general fears about moving. Opening the lines of communication will help you understand how the move is impacting them and how you can help them cope.

Travel Buddies! We all know how important it is to keep the kids busy during long road trips. The same is true when packing up for the long haul. Pack a “Moving Day” travel kit with lots of games, DVDs, music and snacks! If you’re traveling across state lines, try asking your kids if they can spot all 50 states’ license plates!

Here are some other great ideas to make the big move a bit easier:• Put together a playlist of songs to make the time go by faster.• Have your kids create a list of hopes and dreams for their new home.• Pack a fun box full of goodies that can be unpacked by the kids

at your new home.

About the Cover...

Kim Anderson was hired as the 18th men’s basketball coach in Mizzou history on April 28, 2014. The two-time Mizzou

graduate (1979, ‘81) earned 2014 NABC National Coach of the Year honors after leading the University of Central Missouri to the 2014 NCAA Division II national title.

The move by Director of Athletics Mike Alden signaled a return to Missouri’s proud history and helps the program welcome back a “True Son” (Sedalia, Mo.) who is coming off a 30-5 record with the Mules and the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship. Anderson’s national title run at UCM becomes even more impressive considering the program welcomed in 10 new players last season and had just one returning student-athlete averaging more than 4.7 points per game.

Anderson is a member of numerous Hall of Fames around the state of Missouri. He was inducted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in Springfield in 2005 as a student-athlete. He was later inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame for his coaching accomplishments in 2012. In 2006 he was named to the Mizzou Basketball All-Century Team in a fan vote.

Prior to taking over the reins at Central Missouri, Anderson served two years as assistant commissioner of the Big 12 Conference. He was the league liaison for men’s basketball and oversaw the officiating programs and the postseason tournament. Anderson and his wife of 37 years, Melissa, have two sons, Ryan, an Assistant Sports Information Director at North Dakota State and Brett, a 2014 Mizzou graduate and current men’s basketball graduate assistant.

Letter from the Presiding Commissioner / Dan Atwill

If you are in Columbia, you are in Boone County. Boone County is the 8th largest County in the state and in the very center of Missouri. It is at the crossroads of two major highways that run north-south and east-west.

Boone County is the proud home of five major business groups: Health Care, Insurance, Agriculture, Commerce and Education. Our growth has accelerated in the past few years as more and more individuals and businesses find value in our location, business atmosphere and livability.

While the County and the individual cities in the County, including Columbia, have overlapping jurisdictions, the services are quite different. The County provides the Court System, Road Maintenance, County Law Enforcement, Joint Communications, Emergency Management and supports many other public services that are necessary to modern life.

We work daily to provide efficient and effective County Government with minimal intrusion on the lives of our residents. We hope you make your home here and we stand ready to be of service to you and your family when necessary.

MMy family and I relocated to Columbia in May 2011. I had just been appointed to serve as Columbia’s city manager. When I interviewed for the position, there was something about Columbia that felt “ just right.” I grew up rooting for the Royals in Chillicothe, MO. While my education and career took me to Iowa, I never lost my connection to central Missouri. My wife and I were familiar with the area, but we were surprised by the dynamic “vibe” Columbia has to offer. Even my then-eight-year-old twins thought there was something cool about Columbia.

Columbia feels like a great neighborhood in a big city. With its thriving downtown, abundance of cultural opportunities, 50+ miles of trails and the youthful excitement of more than 38,000 college students, Columbia has an active buzz. Maybe that’s because Columbia has always been a crossroads of activity and opportunity.

Columbia was incorporated in 1826 along the Boone’s Lick trail, one of the major east-west passages for settlers heading west. Early citizens like James S. Rollins understood the importance of establishing and keeping the University of Missouri in Columbia. Other citizens expanded educational opportunities with the establishment of Christian College (now Columbia College) and Stephens College. We owe these institutions a debt of gratitude for laying the foundation of our local economy - health, education and entrepreneurship.

While this community of more than 113,000 people is a college town, it is so much more. Columbia is made up of people who are passionate about their community. They protect the environment, celebrate arts and culture, promote

learning, welcome diversity, value free expression and respect civic involvement. Every day, they strive to make Columbia a fantastic place to live, work, learn and play. In 2012, volunteers contributed more than 50,000 hours toward city programs and projects and countless other hours throughout the community. No matter what your interests, age or amount of time you have to share, there are hundreds of volunteer opportunities in Columbia, including the new Certified Tourism Ambassador program through the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

For residents and visitors alike there are unexpected surprises at every turn. There is always something to do at one of Columbia’s theatres, clubs, galleries, libraries, sports venues, parks, trails, auditoriums and shopping centers. Combine this with our culinary scene, festivals, special events and meeting facilities, it’s no wonder that Columbia hosts nearly 2.5 million visitors each year.

All that energy gives Columbia a youthful outlook, but the history and heritage of this area is held dear as well. We claim part of the Daniel Boone heritage, even though the trail he blazed in 1820 was a few miles north of town. Ragtime virtuoso J.W. Blind Boone lived here and President Harry S. Truman wrote letters from local hotels. Artist George Caleb Bingham had a portrait studio on land now occupied by City Hall. I invite everyone to come explore our heritage collections on display here at City Hall. Other passionate preservationists keep our history accessible at locations such as the Walters-Boone County Historical Museum, Boone Junction Village in Nifong Park, Maplewood Home, State Historical Society and many

other private and public facilities. In fact, Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission has bestowed Notable Property designations on 135 structures since 1998.

Our older neighborhoods especially hold this legacy. In the central city, you can find homes representing all periods of the 20th century, many of which have been restored. You can find distinctly rural homes, both large and small, that are remainders of farms annexed into the city limits. Downtown and in our North Village Arts District, developers are building new housing, while reclaiming warehouses, storefronts and factories for students and professionals alike, who prefer the energy of downtown to the more peaceful, tree-lined lanes and suburbs.

As city manager, I am honored to serve this community. Our mayor and city council members are dedicated volunteers who devote countless hours to serving citizens of Columbia. Our city employees are striving to achieve excellence in customer service, high performance and strategic planning. We are committed to making Columbia the best place to live, work, learn and play. Come join us! There’s no place like Columbia to call home.

better water. pure and simple.®

I’m John Mullette, the General Manager

of Culligan Water here in Mid-Missouri. I

think it’s fantastic that you are considering

Columbia, Missouri as your new home town.

Here at Culligan of Mid Missouri we take our

role in the community very seriously and

approach every customer and their concerns

in the following manner:

Culligan of Mid Missouri will intentionally

work within our community to foster a

business environment that exhibits honesty,

integrity and accountability. We will follow

our belief that within the definition of

character is the secret of success in both life

and business.

By consciously practicing these principles our

Corporation will positively impact the families

who work for us, our neighbors and the

greater community.

Culligan...Better water, pure and simple.

Again, thank you for considering Columbia

Missouri as your new home. Please allow us

the opportunity to make your stay

here pleasant.

Q&ASecrets of a Happy Company

While Culligan is an international brand, Culligan Mid-Missouri is locally owned. Do you think “home grown” management has any bearing on employee morale?

We believe that our “home grown” management team effects morale in a number of positive ways. Our front line management team has a total of 115 years’ experience earned while working here at Culligan and It is our belief that this gives our employees confidence in the leadership and that in turn leads to great delivery in all we do! So, in other words, they get to win and winners are very happy! I also believe that because we are known in the community it gives our external customers a greater confidence as well.

Most believe learning is a life-long pursuit. What steps do you take to make sure your team is learning and growing?

We have an understanding that if you’re not learning you’re dying. So, at Culligan we hold weekly training meetings with all of our staff members to insure we are up to the minute on whatever is trending. All of our field personnel go through factory training as well as OJT in the field with their direct supervisor prior to being allowed direct access to our customers. Training is a constant.

Give us an idea of Employee Turnover at your company.

Here at Culligan of Mid-Missouri we pride ourselves in the fact that we have had no layoffs or downsizing for 44 years. The lack of turnover that we experience is a direct result of our commitment to our employees and their success as an employee of Culligan. We did have three employees leave our company this last year whom went on to bigger and better opportunities. In two cases even leaving Columbia for a new city. All in all we experience very low employee turnover.

So, in over 44 years of business, Culligan of Mid-Missouri has had tremendous growth and very little employee turnover. How do you keep employees?

We feel that as an employer we need to offer something that most do not; a professional fun working environment with a full benefit package as well as higher than average wage. We have found that if we train our staff and focus on their success they have proven to be great long term members of our family at Culligan.

Is it all “roses & sunshine” at your office?

Not always. Customer service is a very well respected occupation but, there are times when no matter what you do you just can’t meet everyone’s expectations and we as a whole hate to fail. So when that happens it is felt personally by our team. I will say that we benefit from those rare occasions as we endeavor to learn something so as not to allow it again.

Your staff consists of many different skill-sets. Technicians, sales, customer relations, warehouse crews and a full business & bookkeeping department. How do you get these different minds to communicate?

That is one of the most difficult areas of any business and here at Culligan it is no different. It starts with great training on processes, goals and expectations. We believe in giving employees all of the knowledge they will need to make good decisions and a resource to find answers they don’t have. Finally after going to these lengths we allow our team members to do the job they were trained to do and simply hold them accountable for results. The rest is up to daily communication with all personnel to verify delivery and understanding.

Are new employees ever surprised by your company’s work ethic and management style?

Yes. Most, if not all of them within a short period of time, comment positively on our results as a team and our open management style.

What’s one very important question you always ask a potential new employee when interviewing?

We ask them if they had to design a perfect job for themselves, what would that look like? It helps us understand their wants and desires.

Do new employees need to “know” Mid-Missouri before being hired?

Great question and no, they do not. The knowledge we’ve gained over all these years of the people and the area of Mid-Missouri brings new team members up to speed quickly. We even have routing software to make geographic navigation easy. Plus our local reputation is very solid. And that helps new employees find solid footing on the path to success.

Culligan Water Mid-Missouri

The Synergy between the City of Columbia, Boone County, Mizzou, the Chamber of Commerce, REDI and the business community - This dynamic is “unequaled in our nation,” states Mr. Biggs.

Great Opportunity - Mr. Biggs, a business owner himself, says, “Columbia is THE place to start your dream business and grow it. The resources here to support the entrepreneur are vast.”

How to sum all this up into one statement: Columbia’s Quality of Life. “Virtually every community boasts their quality of life, but Columbians prove it every day!” says Mr. Biggs.

As an everyday traveler, it is important to know how to navigate your way through an area. This can be especially difficult if you are travelling to a place that you are not familiar with. This guide is designed to make getting around and out of Columbia, Missouri very easy.

Columbia is centrally located within the state, and it is divided by two major roadways, I-70 and Highway 63. I-70 travels straight through Columbia, heading west towards Booneville and Kansas City, and east towards Kingdom City and St. Louis. Highway 63 takes you straight through Columbia traveling north to the Moberly area, and south to Ashland and Jefferson City. Because of these roadways, Columbia is one of the most accessible cities in Missouri.

60 • RELOCATING IN COLUMBIA

IIf you want to discover Columbia, start by diving straight into the heart of it. The District is a live/work/play neighborhood that fosters the creative, the eclectic and the local. It’s a community of 50 blocks nestled between three college campuses that blends enduring college-town traditions with the latest trends in fashion, food and the arts. Home of the Arts

Explore Columbia’s creative side during Artrageous Fridays (April 25 and July 18) and Artrageous Weekend (October 10-12). During these art festivals, businesses throughout The District transform into impromptu art galleries to host the works of local and regional artists. These quarterly, self-guided art crawls are free to the public.

Fine art and crafts are also available year round at a number of locally owned shops and galleries around The District. Stroll through the historic core of downtown, and you’ll find works by both nationally recognized artists and young, upstart illustrators.

Known for its bohemian atmosphere, the North Village Arts District is the place to find local artists at work—whether their medium is glass, oil paints, hand-roasted coffee or even small-batch whiskey distilling. If you’re in the mood for entertainment, catch a jazz concert or attend a gallery walk.

To learn more about The District’s art scene, visit our website, discoverthedistrict.com, and check out our Arts & Music section. Fashion Forward

With more than 100 shops featuring clothing, accessories, home accessories and gifts,The District is a shopper’s paradise. Our shops are largely locally owned and offer items you won’t see at big box retailers—so you’re sure to stand out from the crowd at your next big event.

There’s no a better way to explore our shops than with a complimentary refreshment in hand, courtesy of the Spring Shop Hop (April 26). Patrons at this day-long event enjoy exclusive offers from Columbia’s finest retailers and restaurants, live demonstrations, trunk shows and more.

In the mood for a bargain? Your next chance to scour the racks for a steal is The Dog Days Sidewalk Sale (July 24). It’s the largest outdoor sale in The District, featuring deep discounts on your favorite clothing, shoes, home accessories and more. Night on the Town

The District is known for its farm-to-table dining, and more often than not, the chef is right there to tell you what’s

freshest that day. Enjoy a meal of grass-fed beef, local goat cheese, organic salad greens and regional wines. For some classically Columbian grub, grab a slice of pizza, a couple of burgers served on wax paper or slide into a booth at one of the many popular college bar-and-grills.

If your plan includes drinks after dinner, visit our brewpubs for award-winning local microbrews or explore the art of mixology with a cocktail topped with fresh beet juice and spicy jalapenos. If it’s been a long week, we recommend simply relaxing at one of our wine bars and enjoying the conversation.Lovers of live entertainment will be similarly satisfied by the selection offered. The District boasts enough stages to guarantee a live performance at least somewhere downtown every night, whether it’s stand-up comedy, live music, or a themed dance party. For a slower-pace evening, catch an independent film at the only movie house in town where you can grab a bottle of wine with your bag of popcorn.

A quick look at the Food & Drink section of our website will give you the full range of offerings -- from a morning coffee to places to hold your lunch meetings to date nights out. Summertime Fun

Get the most out of your summer evenings when The Blue Note hosts the best block party in town, the 9th Street Summerfest. In past years, the festival has attracted headliners including Chuck Berry, Willie Nelson, Wilco, the Flaming Lips and the Wallflowers. The series typically runs from May to October.

If you’re looking for some fun with the kids, unfurl a blanket and catch a movie under the stars at Movies in the Park in Flat Branch Park. The family-friendly films play once a month from April to September on a large, inflatable screen, and there’s a creek for the kids to wade in you wait for the show to start.

Want more for the whole family to enjoy? Family Fun Fest is held on the third Wednesday of the month from April to September and includes children’s activities, music, face painting and more. Each month features a different theme. Last year’s included traveling the globe, explore the outdoors and Teen Talent Day.

Pick up freshly harvested produce, baked goods, and locally raised meats at the North Village Arts District Farmers and Artisans Market from April to October. Even better, local artists are on hand to showcase their paintings, pottery, jewelry and other offerings. The District also sponsors a weekly Cultivation Station program to help you get the most out of your own garden, with tips on composting, bee keeping and rain barrels.

The District website features a full list of shops and galleries, events, restaurants and more. For more information visit discoverthedistrict.com.

FFamily Pawn is well-known for its catchy commercial jingle that uses the slogan, “Not Your Traditional Pawnshop.” Steve Weise, manager of the Family Pawn on Paris Road, says this type of marketing challenges the negative stereotypes that many people associated with pawnshops.

“This isn’t a seedy, backroom business,” explains Weise. “We’ve been trying to break the stigma for 30 years. Our stores are clean and bright. Our employees are well-trained and friendly. We are much like a regular retail outlet.”

Owner Don Mayse started the Paris Road shop in 1981. He went on to open another Family Pawn on Business Loop 70. There are also locations in Jefferson City, Sedalia and Warrensburg. Weise says that the popularity of reality TV shows about pawnshops have helped to bring in more customers.

“The shows, especially ‘Pawn Stars’, have piqued people’s curiosity to come into the store and check out what we have to offer,” he says. “You won’t find hot air balloons and helicopters here, but the way that they portray the day-to-day operations is pretty accurate.”

When a potential borrower comes into Family Pawn, the pawnbroker determines the worth of their items. The broker pays out loans at a rate of approximately one-third to one-half of the sale price. The borrower has about 90 days to pay off the loan before it becomes the property of Family Pawn. The pawnbroker lists all goods with city and/or state

police departments to identify stolen merchandise. Loans average $70 to $100. But, they can be as small as $20, or as high as several thousand dollars depending on the value of the collateral. Patrons also have the option to sell their wares outright.

“If an item is in good shape, and we think we can make money off it, we will buy it,” says Weise.

Family Pawn buys and sells gold. It has a large selection of products, including jewelry and watches, electronics, musical instruments and firearms. Shoppers can also find tools, DVDs, video games and small appliances. Customers often negotiate with the pawnbrokers to receive the lowest prices possible. Weise says some of his favorite pieces of merchandise are what he calls “mantiques.” These are things that a man might buy for his office or man cave. Recently, Weise acquired a turn of the century cast iron ball and chain with shackles.

“You never know what is going to come through that door,” says Weise. “We have customers that come in once or twice a day to see what is here because it changes so quickly. There is nothing wrong with haggling. We usually have some wiggle room on the price.”

Family Pawn employees are cross-trained in every category of their stock, and they also have specialties. For example, Weise is more knowledgeable in antique firearms. Pat Mccollum, manager of the Business Loop location, says his expertise is in jewelry, and vintage guitars and guns.

“We see the same items over and over again,” says Weise. “We usually have an idea of how much we can make on something. We don’t know everything, but we know how to do the research to find out.”

A commitment to excellent customer service is one of the things that set Family Pawn apart from their competition. Weise and Mccollum credit their staffs for having the ability to communicate with a diverse group of clientele. They also strive to keep the appearance and inventory of their stores top-notch at all times.

“We treat our customers really well, and we have a nice selection,” says Mccollum. “Family Pawn is a great place to start if you are looking for discount retail and/or a short-term loan.”

Business & CareersCOLUMBIA

–By Porcshe N. Moran–

There are many factors to consider when choosing a place to live and work. A robust economy is a strong selling point for most people. Forbes ranked Columbia No. 6 on its 2014 list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers. In recent years, Inc., U.S. News & World Report, Parade, and the Milken Institute have also given Columbia high marks. Matt McCormick, president of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, says the positive recognition helps to attract and keep businesses in the city.

“We use these rankings to show our members that Columbia has a stable economic climate,” he says. “We also use them in partnership with Regional Economic Development, Inc. (REDI) to recruit new businesses and entrepreneurs.”

Columbia’s 4.7 percent unemployment rate is below both the state and national averages. The city’s major industries are education, health care, insurance, information technology and life sciences. The five largest employers are the University of Missouri, University Hospitals & Clinics, Columbia Public Schools,

RELOCATINGIN COLUMBIA

Boone Hospital Center and the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital. The City of Columbia, Veterans United Home Loans, State Farm Insurance and Shelter Insurance round out the top 10. McCormick says that the strength of these sectors makes it possible for new industries to come to Columbia and thrive.

“Columbia has weathered the storm of the economic downturn better than other places because of our diverse economy,” says McCormick. “We are starting to see companies grow again. There is a lot of residential and commercial construction happening.”

Another advantage for Columbia is its entrepreneurial culture. REDI sponsors three programs designed to build new business. Annually, there is the one-day entrepreneurship summit called #Boom. They also host a 54-hour business pitch competition called Columbia Startup Weekend. Each week, the organization has a meeting called 1 Million Cups. Entrepreneurs can present their ideas and receive feedback from mentors and

advisors. In 2012, REDI launched the Downtown Incubator. It serves as a 24-hour office space with resources and activities for local entrepreneurs. The Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the University of Missouri also advocate entrepreneurial efforts.

“The hope is that our support will assist entrepreneurs in growing businesses that will add more jobs in the community,” says REDI president Mike Brooks. “We are always looking to identify entrepreneurs and help them in any way that we can.”

Columbia also benefits from a low cost of living and a central location close to major highways. The city enjoys top ranked public schools and health care facilities. McCormick says these attributes make Columbia an attractive place for college students to start their careers after graduation.

“The Chamber talks to students and encourages them to look at all the opportunities that are available in Columbia,” he says. “We also point out the high quality of life, and all the great recreation and entertainment options.”

Even with all the accolades, Columbia’s leaders know there is always room for improvement. McCormick says that Columbia can stay competitive by keeping its transportation infrastructure in excellent condition. There is also a need to expand service at the Columbia Regional Airport. The Chamber of Commerce and REDI both have strategic plans that promote a sustainable, healthy economy through good jobs, a supportive business climate and partnerships between public and private entities.

“Columbia is a great community with many assets,” says Brooks. “We take great pride in being listed among the top cities in the U.S. We’ll continue to focus on our strengths in our efforts to attract and retain business, and grow our economic base.”

DogMaster Distillery Brings Craft Spirits to Columbia

DogMaster Distillery occupies an inconspicuous warehouse on James Street in the North Village Arts District. The garage doors are pulled open, the ware-house is lit and an industrial fan hums. To the left of the entrance, a lounge with couches and coffee table books opens up to a small room that sells DogMaster merchandise and odds and ends. To the right, a black iron fence separates the distillery’s processing equip-ment and wooden barrels from the social parlor — a couple of tables and the bartop ringed with mirrors and mementos. Van Hawxby, the owner/operator, serves customers from behind the bar with the stereo cranking out some Rockabilly music. Sitting on a stool across the black bartop is his wife, Lisa Hawxby watches her husband as he mixes cocktails for appreciative customers. He’s mixed quite a few since their social parlor opened July 25. Lisa, dubbed the DogMistress by her husband, says this business, the DogMaster Distillery has been the most expensive, yet interesting, marital therapy she can think of — and it goes beyond taste testing their white whiskey, vodka or hand-crafted cocktails. “Had we really understood how long it would take and the resource drain it would be, I don’t know that I

would have been as supportive,” she says. “But, this is his dream. When he’s behind the bar and making drinks and talking about what he’s doing, it makes me happy.” The physical environs of the bar reflect the distillery’s authenticity: overhead, the ductwork of the warehouse runs against exposed ceiling, and adjacent to the bar, a chalkboard neatly lists available cocktails. “It’s a great feeling being able to work behind the bar and have customers in front of you and be able to point back behind the fence at the distillation equipment and raw materials and be able to say, ‘That’s where I started making your cocktail,’ and then take them back there and walk them the process,” Van says. Currently DogMaster Distillery has an un-aged Whis-key and Vodka available to the public. In 2015, Van intends to have proper barreled products, Whiskey and Bourbon available as well as expanding distribution beyond Central Missouri. “This is fun,” Van says. “I’m making booze. How many people can say that? And not only that, but I make wonderful cocktails, and have you ever seen someone grumpy when you bring them a cocktail? No, everybody’s happy. That’s awesome.” Kohler, Carson. (2014, October). Whiskey Business. Vox Magazine.

WWhether your pet is furred, finned or feathered, it is always important to take the correct measures when you are relocating them. Knowing the proper way to introduce your pet to this stressful event can save you from the impending chaos that would otherwise ensue.

Your best bet is to go about your daily routine with your pet as commonly as possible. Make sure that you are feeding, exercising, and playing with your pet as you normally would.

Another great idea is to ask a friend if they would pet-sit while you are packing up. Pets don’t respond to change very well, so keeping them away from the home while you are making the transition is ideal.

If you are flying, you will want to get your pet ready for the flight a month ahead of time. Get your pet familiar with its insulated carrier so that it recognizes it as a safe place. Placing it in the carrier at night and rewarding them with a treat is a good way to convince them. Favorite toys and blankets are also great ways of letting your pet know that its carrier isn’t so bad.

Ask if your airline provides a carrying service for your pet. If so, leave a note stating any specific instructions in addition to information like when your pet last ate, drank, or used the bathroom.

If you are traveling by vehicle, make sure you make rest stops often so your pet can stretch it legs, and always make sure that food and water is available.

YYou’re looking to move to Boone County, you’re a working parent, and you need daycare for your son or daughter. Where do you turn? When it comes to child care, you naturally expect the best. The fact of the matter is there is a wide array of child care institutions to choose from, and this can make picking the right service very difficult. As you relocate to the Columbia area, finding a child care service is probably at the top of your list. Choosing a service that fits both the needs of your child and the needs of your family can be difficult, but by remembering a few very important things, you can get closer to finding the best child care service for your child.

When selecting a service, you should keep in mind a few very important things. Whether the facility is educational or

For infant to pre-kindergarten, finding a place to care for your young ones requires research.

Child’sP L A Y !

a place for play, licensing should be on your checklist. Licensing requirements differ from state to state, but in Missouri if a care provider cares for more than four children, and is of no relation to those children, he or she must be licensed. Licensing ensures that the service provided meets health and safety regulations. Therefore, you should be on the lookout for anything suspicious. To ensure that the center has been properly inspected, pay close attention to cleanliness and the ratio of children to caregivers.

If you are looking for an educational service, it is imperative that you ask about accreditation. While preschools of any kind do not have to be accredited by the state, they should have accreditation from a national organization. The National Association for the Education of Young Children and the National Association for Family Child Care are two of the largest associations that provide accreditation. Request proof of licensing and accreditation and visit the facilities in person. This will give you peace of mind and ensure that you are making the best choice for your child.

Another important aspect is the caregiver’s qualifications. It is important for the caregiver to know what he or she is doing. Asking about the caregiver’s education and experience is one sure-fire way of telling the difference between someone whose qualifications recommend them, and someone whose lack thereof does not.

The best way to go about this search is to decide what type of care you need the most. If you want to supplement your child’s care with a curriculum-based program, you have many options to choose from. Columbia has a wide variety of educationally supported child care services, such as the End of the Rainbow Childcare Center, the Columbia Montessori School, the Kinder Care Daycare Center in Columbia, and the Panda Pals Preschool

the family home on a regular basis. During personal visits, the parent educator and parents engage in discussions about child development, participate in an activity specifically designed for the age and needs of the child, engage in a literacy activity, discuss the needs of the whole family and what is available in the community to meet those needs. Group Connections are held to provide opportunities for parents and children to come together in a group setting to learn more about child development, to network with other families, to observe their child with other children and to practice parenting skills. Each child receives an annual screening in the areas of health, hearing, vision and overall development (communication, social, motor, intellectual). Screening sessions help a parent to understand their child’s development, recognizing strengths and possible areas of concern that might require a need for follow up services. Parents as Teachers provide families with a resource network. Parent

Educators share information regarding community resources and services available based on the specific needs of the family. Parent Educators help link families to the appropriate community agency whenever appropriate.

The Parents as Teachers program is designed for parents who have a child from zero to age five. Contact them to see if you are eligible to participate.

Remember that not every preschool or day care service is going to suit your child, and it is important to explore your options and see which one will fit your child’s unique personality the best. Whether you want to give your child more of a social environment a couple days out of the week, or whether you prefer an educationally geared service that is full-time, Columbia is sure to have what you are looking for. With a little effort and deliberation, you will find the perfect day care service to accommodate the needs of your child and your family.

AAnyone in pursuit of a higher education knows that picking the right college or university can be a daunting task. The endless barrage of campus visits, phone calls, and informational pamphlets can end up being more of a hindrance than a help. Amy Row-Williams, a Moberly Area Community College graduate and a student at Columbia College, and Nate Elwood, a student at the University of Missouri, encountered the same problem most students face when they begin their hunt for the perfect college.

Each student has different wants and needs when it comes to higher education. Some students are all about the money, while others are focused on proximity to relatives. Some students are carefully determining which school has the best educational programs, while others are simply checking out the facility and what it has to offer. When it comes to college, it is not always a one-size-fits-all deal. It takes careful consideration to decide which college or university is going to work the best for you.

When her search began, Row-Williams was seeking a personalized learning experience that would not siphon all of the money from her pocket. Elwood was looking for a school close to home that had a great degree program in his field of study. Each ended up finding what they were looking for, and they found it in Columbia, Missouri. Columbia is home to many colleges and universities. Each institution has something different to offer their students. Among the list of Columbia college picks are Moberly Area Community College, the University of Missouri, Columbia College, Stephens College, and nearby William Woods University.

For many college students, personal attention is of the utmost importance. Having a teacher that can devote more time to each individual due to a smaller class size can be extremely beneficial. Evelyn Jorgenson, President of Moberly Area Community College, states, “Our class sizes are small, rarely over 30 students per class...We are one of the most cost-effective higher education options and we provide transfer degrees as well as career-technical degrees and certificates. With an associate’s degree, there are so many options....I myself, as president of the college, started with an Associate of Arts degree, then went on to complete a Bachelors, Masters and Ph.D.” Similarly, Row-Williams used Moberly Area Community College as her jumping PH

Looking for a career or perhaps a career change? Sam Brown’s offers classes both full and part time starting monthly in the lucrative fields of Cosmetology, Barbering and Manicuring. Call for an interview.

off point, and is now going to school for her Bachelors degree.

With 280 degree programs and a 1,250-acre campus, there is no question why the University of Missouri in Columbia is the number one choice among Missouri’s high school seniors. “Initially, I decided to go to Mizzou because I was interested in Journalism, and, simply put, they have the best Journalism program in the country. However, it was also important for me to stay close to my family, all of whom live in Missouri. So, coming here basically gave me the best of both worlds,” says Elwood. Quality and location make the University of Missouri a great fit for anyone seeking a degree. Mizzou’s mission is to “provide all Missourians the benefits of a world-class research university.” This has been their goal since their foundation in 1839, and it is what they continue to do today.

The price of a higher education can be staggering. Finding an affordable college with quality faculty and programs is no easy chore. That is why Row-Williams chose Columbia College when

she decided to pursue her Bachelor’s degree. “They (Columbia College) are known to have a great Evening Program. I also didn’t want to pay university fees to get my B.A.,” Row-Williams states. Columbia College offers flexible programs for students who are juggling work, school, and sometimes even a family. Columbia College provides its students small class sizes, personal attention, and quality education that is relatively inexpensive. That is what makes this college perfect for all students, whether they just graduated from high school or they just started a family.

The second oldest women’s college in the country, Stephens College, has been educating women for over 175 years. With more than 50 educational programs available, and 86-acres of campus, Stephens College is set on providing women with an excellent undergraduate education. Dianne Lynch, President of Stephens College, states that they have a “commitment to each student’s success at Stephens. NNonprofit organizations of all sorts make massive contributions to their respective communities every day. Columbia is no exception. Whatever their goal may be, they are geared to the success of every individual within a given community. Ensuring the futures of those nonprofits is a huge undertaking, but it is an important one. What better way to provide this security of many nonprofit organizations than to establish a community foundation that will call upon the community to give in return.

The city of Columbia has recently joined the ranks of other large Missouri cities that have community foundations. The Community Foundation of Central Missouri is all about improving the community through charitable projects funded by donations made by locals. “The Community Foundation of Central Missouri is a great asset for Columbia,” says Karen Mickey, advisor for the Sensible Group and active member of the Columbia community.

The whole idea behind the Community Foundation of Central Missouri is to support the community. By banding together, the entire community, including the nonprofit organizers and those who make their contributions with their donations, is guaranteeing its own success. In other words,

What Goes Around Comes Around

every member can contribute to the growth and stability of the community that they are a part of.

Along with community support, the Community Foundation of Central Missouri has taken on the task of strengthening nonprofit organizations that are “crucial to the health and vitality of the community.” The organizations that the Community Foundation of Central Missouri aims to sponsor remain in control, while the foundation assists them in fundraising and marketing so that their assets continue to grow and they continue to support the community. This way, the organizations get the word out about their goals and ideas, generating support from the community. This process allows for the nonprofit organization to become self-sustaining, and no longer in need of the funds of the Foundation.

Overall, the goal is to keep Columbia thriving, and to make sure that nonprofit organizations are sustained over time so that the community can continue to prosper.

As you can see, the relationship between community supporters and local nonprofit organizations is very strong. All of these efforts are being put towards the Columbia community in order to keep it powerful. With the existence and perseverance of

nonprofit organizations such as the Youth Empowerment Zone, Columbia can continue to grow.

Youth Empowerment Zone, also known as YEZ, is an awesome organization that helps the most at risk youth get their lives turned around. This organization is devoted to reaching out to “at-risk urban youth” in order to provide them with the skills and knowledge that will help them to become successful adults. Youth Empowerment Zone is intended to help youth secure employment and to teach them how to be a great employee. The Youth Empowerment Zone also teaches youth life-management skills necessary for a prosperous future.

Youth Empowerment Zone began with the help of a community foundation. The foundation helped the Zone succeed and let members of the community know that this organization was there. This has helped the Youth Empowerment Zone reach out to at-risk youth and make a great contribution to the Columbia community.

Another vital organization is the Missouri Food Bank Association. This is

a coalition of Feeding America member Food Banks that covers every corner and every county of Missouri. Their mutual purpose is to provide food to hungry people in Missouri and to educate the public about hunger and the vital role food banks play in addressing the problem in Missouri. Missouri’s Food Banks rely upon the generosity and support of Missourians concerned with the issue of hunger in the Show-Me State. The Missouri Food Bank Association is comprised of members from each of the six major Food Banks in Missouri.

The relationship between a nonprofit organization and a community foundation is a resilient one. In most cases, each one needs the other. In order for nonprofit organizations to be successful starting out, they need funds and marketing. In order for a community foundation to succeed, they need the help of nonprofits. With every member of a community striving to make the Columbia community better, whether they are donating their time, their money or their experience, there is only one possible outcome. That outcome is most surely success.

OOver the last quarter-century, more than 100 restaurants have come and gone in Tiger Town. However, there are some that, for many reasons, continue to satisfy, year after year. Restaurants like Murry’s, Shakespeare’s Pizza, Booches, Broadway Diner, Ernie’s Café, and Jack’s Gourmet have become famous with the locals, and with good reason. These eccentric eateries offer continued culinary comfort for natives, visiting alumni and students alike. Each of these restaurants offers up a special blend of consistent food, quality-minded employees and owners who truly care. All of this is available at a great value.

Broadway Diner

Customers adore Murry’s for their eclectic assortment of fine menu items, and, of course, the live entertainment. Murry’s is quite possibly one of the most popular eateries in Columbia today. Bill Sheals and Gary Moore opened this Columbia classic in 1985 and they’ve been a hit ever since! With unbelievably delicious appetizers such as Brock’s Green Pepper Rings, deep-fried green peppers smothered with powdered sugar, and fabulous a la carte entrée options like Linguini with Clams, Shrimp, and Mushrooms, it’s no wonder Murry’s customers can’t get enough. Superior care and state-of-the-art technology.

Concannon Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa

–By Porcshe N. Moran–

RELOCATINGIN COLUMBIA

When Dr. Matthew J. Concannon opened his private surgical practice in 2007, he wanted to create a serene and comfortable space for his patients. Upon entering his facility on Columbia’s south side, it is easy to see that Concannon accomplished his goal. He decorated the carpeted lobby with plush velvet furniture, waterfall signage and pendant light fixtures that admit a soft glow. Cornflower blue accents add a touch of color to the soothing, neutral color palette. Fine art paintings cover the walls. There is even a large aquarium filled with fish that Concannon raises.

“When we moved into this building, it was an empty shell,” says Concannon. “I wanted it to look nicer than my home, and not at all like a typical doctor’s office. That was the whole theme.”

Besides the pleasant surroundings, Concannon presents his patients with superior care and state-of-the-art technology. His on-site operating room is fully recognized by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF), which ensures patient safety through peer review and inspection. In addition, Dr. Concannon has more than

25 years of experience. He has been certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery since 1997. He performs a variety of breast, body contour, face and hand procedures.

Before surgery, Concannon sits down with his patients to find out exactly what they desire from the process. Many of his patients adhere to a healthy lifestyle, but still have imperfections that bother them. Concannon believes that plastic surgery is an enhancement, not a shortcut.

“We take the time to talk to each patient to figure out their goals,” he says. “People need to be as clear as possible about what they want, so that they can give their surgeon marching orders. Everyone needs to be on the same page.”

Concannon’s patients come to Columbia from all over the state, including St. Louis and Kansas City. One draw is his use of light IV sedation with local anesthesia for most of his procedures. This technique makes patients relaxed and drowsy during surgery. It also allows for faster recovery. The on-site operating room gives patients the convenience of not having to go to a hospital. There are also accommodations for recovering patients who want an overnight stay. Concannon says that he and his staff often develop a family-like relationship with patients. They all have his personal cell phone number to contact him at any time with questions or concerns.

“I want my work to be done right,” says Concannon. “It is unacceptable for me to have surgery or a treatment that doesn’t end with a great result for the patient. My team makes it a priority to meet our patients’ needs before, during and after every procedure.”

In 2012, Concannon expanded his business. He renovated his 12,500-square-foot building to incorporate a comprehensive medical spa. The luxurious establishment has the same pampering, stress-free environment of a traditional day spa. But, there is an added benefit of the more advanced and effective treatments that only a medical facility can offer. A well-trained staff of nurses and estheticians provide clients with a range of healing services such as facials and chemical peels, laser hair removal, photorejuvenation, and noninvasive body contouring and skin tightening. There are also complimentary skin care consultations. The spa’s boutique sells mineral makeup and prescription skin care products. Kathy Concannon, Director of Operations, says the medical spa’s menu of services complement her husband’s plastic surgery procedures. They also help patients maintain smoother, younger-looking skin.

“People don’t always want to go under the knife to get an amazing outcome,” she says. “We can do a lot to correct your skin with noninvasive procedures and medical grade products. When you walk out, you’ll feel the change in your skin and see the long-term results.”

Just minutes from Columbia, the famous Katy Trail of Missouri provides plenty of outdoor fun.

Cruising the Katy

–By Porcshe N. Moran–

RELOCATINGIN COLUMBIA

From St. Charles in eastern Missouri to Clinton in western Missouri, the 20-year-old Katy Trail serves as a 225-mile paradise for those who love to walk, jog, bike and run while enjoying Missouri’s flora and fauna. Residents and visitors to the Lake of the Ozarks have less than an hour-and-a-half drive to Columbia, MO to gain access to this dynamic, natural amenity.

While Columbia is not on the Katy Trail, it is accessible from the City’s MKT Nature and Fitness Trail at five locations;

Flat Branch Park, Providence Road, Scott Blvd., Stadium Blvd., and Forum Blvd. To make an excursion on the trail a simple task for visitors, there are shops in Columbia that rent bicycles for half and full days.

“The trail is really accessible,” says Beth Mead, Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau Tourism Marketing Manager. “It has a gentle grade and the crushed limestone surface is very rideable. The Katy Trail takes you through so many different aspects of Missouri’s landscape.” Continued on next page

For More Information:

The landscape includes the Missouri River, which the trail follows for 152 miles from Boonville, Mo. to St. Charles. Along the recreational path, travelers are treated to scenic views of wetlands, forests, prairies, farmland, rolling hills and bluffs. A variety of native wildlife and plants inhabits the diverse area. Horseback riding is allowed for 25 miles between Calhoun and the Sedalia Fairgrounds trailhead. Many businesses, such as private campgrounds, wineries, general stores and farm stands, are available along the way to provide welcome rest stops for the more than 300,000 trail patrons each year.

“It is a supported, pleasant ride,” says Mead. “You see other people on the trail. There are businesses along the trail. You don’t feel like you are isolated. You feel like you are part of a community.”

Beyond recreation and wildlife, the Katy Trail also offers a history lesson and bragging rights for the state. A 165-mile stretch from St. Charles to Boonville is part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The trail is built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad, and is the nation’s largest rail-to-trail conversion. The Katy Trail was designated as a Millennium Legacy Trail by the White House Millennium Council.

“Nothing like the Katy Trail had ever been tried in Missouri,” Mead says. “It was a very ambitious undertaking, but the trail has been mutually beneficial for residents and visitors.”

CColumbia is a beautiful city that has many Mid-Missouri retirees flocking to the area in droves. Columbia’s atmosphere can be a very persuasive reason to retire here, but if you should need another motive, perhaps you should consider the plentiful shopping and dining opportunities as well as the ample recreational prospects. With several golf courses, ample shopping opportunities, and more than 100 restaurants to choose from, Columbia is a wonderful place to retire. If these are not enough reasons, consider that Columbia offers retirees economical living and accessible healthcare, in addition to a safe living environment.

The best way to get to know the Columbia community is by participating in the area’s many organizations, in addition to getting involved in the countless recreational activities available here. One of the greatest draws to the Columbia area is the universities. Columbia is known as College Town, and it is the home of many avid MU Tigers Fans. There are countless activities hosted by the University of Missouri, including numerous athletic events, art exhibitions, and festivals for all to attend.

Annual festivals are also great, because they offer volunteer positions. You can explore volunteer options by working with the local Chamber of Commerce or visiting the city website.

The best way to sift through all of the events you want to attend is by participating in local groups that offer activities. There are several of these event-hosting groups in Columbia that are combined to make up the 50 Plus Program. These retiree organizations offer great fun. Continued on next page

Pale Purple Coneflower Echinacea pallidaPale purple coneflowers bloom for a month including most of June. They are often seen along older roads in Missouri. Butterflies and bees pollinate the flowers. Many forms of wildlife make meals out of these plants. A spider and a stink bug can be seen in the flowers in this picture.

If you’re a gardener who would enjoy watching butterflies flitting about your property, birds nesting in your trees and shrubs, and lizards enjoying a sunny spot, then you could benefit from a landscape plan that includes native plants. Birds, butterflies and other native wildlife species appreciate properties landscaped with native plants. The food

chain that feeds native animals begins with native plants. The second step up the food chain is often insects that eat plants. It’s all one big web of life dependent on native plants.

If you’re lucky enough to live near native oak trees, you have likely experienced the constant chatter of spring migrating birds in the treetops

as they feed on all sorts of insects that are feeding on the oak leaves. The birds are doing their part to keep a delicate web of life in balance as they offer a pleasant serenade.

For the past 30 years, Missouri Wildflowers Nursery has been providing native plants that beautify landscapes as they attract and feed that “web of

ButtonbushCephalanthus occidentalis

Bees and butterflies flock to these balls of little white flowers when they appear from June to August. The seeds are eaten by ducks, geese and rails. The insect that ate the leaves in this picture might have been eaten by a bird.

Blue Wild Indigo Baptisia australis

Flowering May and June, blue wild indigo is usually pollinated by bumblebees and other native bees. The caterpillars of several butterfly species feed on the foliage. The Wild Indigo Weevil grubs feed on the seeds of blue wild indigo. In fall whole plants often break loose at ground level and tumble around in the wind to scatter seeds.

Columbine Aquilegia Canadensis

A favorite of ruby-throated hummingbirds, columbine typically blooms within three to five days of their arrival. While the flowers are a perfect fit for the hummers, bumblebees and other native bees collect pollen from the flowers.

Missouri Primrose Oenothera macrocarpa

The spectacular four-inch blossoms are seen in late May and early June along roadsides in the Ozarks, also from the lake area to Jefferson City. The flowers are pollinated by sphinx moths. Caterpillars of the uncommon Juanita Sphinx Moth feed on the foliage.

Coral Honeysuckle Lonicera sempervirens

This hummingbird feeder has an explosion of red flowers at about the same time that hummingbirds arrive in the spring. Several kinds of birds eat the red fruits in late summer and fall. Caterpillars of both the Hummingbird and Snowberry Clearwing moths, feed on the foliage of honeysuckles.

Copper Iris Iris fulva

Copper Iris blooms for two to three weeks beginning in early May. The flowers are well designed to favor pollination by ruby-throated hummingbirds. This species is Missouri Wildflowers Nursery’s “Native Plant of the Year.” While native to southeast Missouri, it will flourish in average to moist gardens all over the state.

Rose MallowHibiscus lasiocarpos

The large, white to rose-colored flowers appear July to October. The plants are often seen near lakes and streams. Bumblebees do much of the pollinating. Ruby-throated hummingbirds collect nectar from the flowers. Caterpillars of several butterflies and moths feed on various parts of hibiscus plants. Ducks and quail eat the seeds.

life.” Their plants are as similar as is possible to what the first settlers encountered: the plants are propagated from seeds with genetic origin within the state of Missouri.

While there are many cultivars of native species available on the market today, Missouri Wildflowers Nursery sells only one, buffalo grass for lawns. Cultivars are generally selected by plant breeders with the idea that the plant will be more attractive to the customer without regard for wildlife benefit, and the wildlife benefit is compromised the more a plant is changed by plant breeder selection. Missouri Wildflowers Nursery

wants part of the beauty in a landscape to be butterflies and birds that are best attracted and fed by the plants that these animals took part in selecting.

In big cities and suburbs, people (including children) miss a lot of wildlife action because the native plants are missing. Most native plants in these areas have been replaced by plants from other continents, plants often referred to as exotic species. Our native insects, the second step up the food chain, usually don’t recognize exotic species as being tasty, or in the case of bees and butterflies there is little nectar or pollen available in cultivar flowers.

You can obtain genuine native plants at Missouri Wildflowers Nursery. They have plants for sun, shade, and everything in between, including perennial wildflowers, trees, shrubs, and vines.

Missouri Wildflowers Nursery is a privately owned, retail nursery located at Brazito, MO, 12 miles south of Jefferson City on Highway 54, two driveways south of the fire station on the outer road (Pleasant Hill Rd.) SSince 1959, the Columbia Art League (CAL) has offered the community a place to experience the visual arts. With its exhibitions, special events and classes, CAL is an active part of Columbia’s creative culture.

“We represent the artistic voice of the community,” says executive director Diana Moxon. “When you come into the gallery, you’ll see works from beginners and from professional artists. Works from high school students are next to works from college professors.”

CAL is located on Ninth Street alongside the Missouri Theatre Center for the Arts. The nonprofit organization puts on

six juried and unjuried exhibitions each year. The shows are open to all skill levels and mediums.

Moxon says the most anticipated show of 2013 was called Interpretations. The exhibition challenged 40 visual artists and 40 literary artists to anonymously swap their work and create a second work of art or piece of writing that gave their interpretation of the other artist’s work.

A food-themed exhibition called Edible was another popular show in 2013. The six-week exhibit culminated in a fundraiser party where 10 local chefs served dishes that were inspired by a work of their choice from the show.

“We like to cross-pollinate art from different formats,” says Moxon. “It gets people out of their comfort zones, and the end result is so amazing. I’m very proud of these types of shows.”

Moxon says that people are sometimes surprised by the quality of work that is displayed at CAL. She says the gallery prides itself on having a professional atmosphere.

“We have some incredibly talented artists in Columbia and mid-Missouri,” says Moxon. “We regularly have works here that could easily hang on the wall of a New York City art gallery.”

Despite CAL’s high standards, Moxon says they thrive to be inclusive and make art accessible to the general public. CAL’s Community Exhibits Program displays artwork by local artists at participating businesses on a rotating basis.

CAL’s Art in the Park festival, which is held the first weekend of June in Stephens Lake Park, is a way to introduce people to the visual arts in a fun environment, says Moxon. The festival features artists from around the country selling works in various mediums, including painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork, fiber and jewelry. CAL calendar is the Boone County Art Show, which takes place every October at Boone County National Bank on the corner of Eighth and Broadway. The unjuried show includes approximately 200 artworks by Boone County artists.

“Art gives some people anxiety,” says Moxon. “The more that we can introduce art into everyday life, the easier it is for people to become comfortable with it. Art in the Park, for example, is a casual, family-friendly event where people can chat with the artists about their work.”

CAL also reaches out to children

and teens in an effort to promote art appreciation at a young age. Its programs for children include classes, summer art camps, arts and crafts birthday parties, home school art curriculum and the Young Collector’s Tent at Art in the Park. CAL is a Partner in Education with Lee Expressive Arts Elementary School.

“When you can get kids excited about art, adults get excited about it too,” says Moxon.

CAL is financially supported by corporate sponsors, individual memberships, donations, and grants from the Missouri Arts Council, the City of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs and the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau. Volunteers help out at special events and with daily tasks at the gallery.

“As a nonprofit, we give people an outlet for their creativity,” says Moxon. “Not everyone can make the cut to show their work at a for-profit gallery, but they have a chance to do that at the Columbia Art League. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing people start to believe in themselves as artists, maybe because someone has purchased their work or they win an award. I see them blossom before my eyes.”

When opportunity knocks, many find that relocation is a must. In the midst of uprooting everything, the trailing spouse must begin the search for a new job. Columbia, Missouri is home to tons of employers, making it a great place to relocate to, especially for the trailing spouse.

Finding a job can be an intimidating undertaking. By utilizing resources and services available to you, you can eliminate some of the stress often associated with job hunting.

You can begin your job search by utilizing the Internet and other mediums such as local newspapers. This will help give you an idea of who is hiring, what they want from their future employee, and what they can offer to you. Local papers such as the Columbia Daily Tribune and the Columbia Missourian offer their job listings online, as well as in print, so as a trailing spouse, you can begin your job search straight away.

Human Resource Departments can also provide the trailing spouse with a great deal of helpful information. Columbia’s

Human Resource Department lists permanent and temporary employment options, as well as internships and additional employment information. These listings are available online to make your job hunt go quickly and smoothly.

Working with the Chamber of Commerce and local employment agencies can also be of great help to you. You should be apprehensive about any employment agencies that charge a fee for their services, and you should always consider using more than one. This way you are branching out into several different job arenas.

By becoming associated with the Chamber of Commerce, you will be introduced to several business owners and leaders throughout the Columbia community. Contacts are valuable resources when it comes to finding a job for the trailing spouse. This could be of the utmost importance when searching for a job, because any connections you make can be beneficial.
