ABOUT NATIONAL BOARD OF ACCREDITATION (NBA)

The National Board of Accreditation (NBA), India was initially established by AICTE (All India Council ofTechnical Education) under section 10(u) of AICTE act, in the year 1994, for periodic evaluations oftechnical institutions & programs. India is officially a member of the Washington Accord from 13thJune 2014 with the permanent signatory status of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). This isconsidered as a significant step of progress for the higher-education sector in India.

Five things to know about NBA:

• It is a kind of recognition which indicates that a programme or degree has international standards.• The Washington Accord encourages and facilitates the mobility of engineering and pharmacy

graduates and professionals at international level.• A student in India graduating from a programme accredited by NBA is eligible to practice as a

pharmacy professional/engineer in his/her relevant domain in any of the countries that have signed the Washington Accord (Presently 16 countries: USA, Canada, UK, China, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Srilanka, NewZealand, Russia, South Africa, Ireland, Turkey, Hongkong, Singapore etc.)

• The only body eligible for accreditation of the Pharmacy/Engineering courses which can enjoy the privileges of the Washington Accord is “National Board of Accreditation” (NBA) in India.

• The Washington Accord is a step forward to upgrade the higher-education system in India and allow Indian graduates to compete at a global stage.

ABOUT NATIONAL INSTITUTIONAL RANKING FRAMEWORK (NIRF)

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015. This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country on the basis of some quality parameters broadly cover“Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” Outreachand Inclusivity,” and “Perception”. India Rankings – 2016 based on this framework were released on4th April 2016. For India Rankings – 2018 and 2019, the main ranking parameters remain the same.

Five things to know about the NIRF:

1. Ranking is an Annual Report Card to the Nation and to the stakeholders on what has been done by the institution in the last one year, on the given performance

2. Accreditation gives absolute grade, ranking is relative to the other institutions similarly placed.3. We must understand the NIRF score as a reflection of where the institution is standing vis-a-vis other

institutions in the similar category.4. This ranking band of institutions are shown against each institution is reflective of their performance.5. Presently, this year over 4,000 institutions participated in the India Rankings 2019.

“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”-Albert Einstein

It is a matter of pride to pen down my message to be recorded in the pro-spectus of Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science- Tez-pur. The institute is located in one of the most beautiful terrains of Assam. It is cradled in the lap of nature laced with green environment for students to learn, grow and spread their wings.Pharmaceutical education plays a very important role in producing pharma-cists who are professional drug specialists. Pharmaceutical field is evolving day by day and contributing more to the wellbeing of the society. Govern-ment and Private sectors are working consistently towards improvement of health care among people. Pharmaceutical products or drugs are one of the important components of health care management and ‘Pharmacist’ is piv-otal component as his role is expanding from a dispenser to a researcher and a patient counsellor. It is one of the few professions which has shown significant growth rate even in the time of recession. It gives me great satisfaction that the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Soci-ety is imparting quality pharmacy education in Assam since 2007 through Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science, Guwahati, as a first private Pharmacy institute in the state and now became a prestigious institute not only in Assam but also in India as well. In continuations of the development and students demand in pharmacy education, the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society has established its second pharmacy institute at Dekargaon, Tezpur namely Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceu-tical Science-Tezpur under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model with Di-rectorate of Technical Education; Govt. of Assam from the academic session 2020-2021. We have built up a healthy tradition in this regard and intend to keep it that away. GIPS also adopted a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the menace of ragging. It launches awareness drives among the students about the seriousness and consequences of indulging in the act of ragging. To achieve this, the following measures are taken.• The college authority regularly address the students on this expect to create awareness.• Large displays (like banners etc.) are erected at important places around the campus at the starting of new aca-

demic sessions.• An anti ragging squad (ARS) was formed and the names and contact numbers of the members of ARS made avail-

• An Anti Ragging Committee (ARC) has also been set up. The names of the ARC members with their contact details are also published for the victim or his/her parents/guardians to lodge a complaint to the chairman of ARC.
