Dear Student,

The University of Mysore welcomes you to its picturesque main

campus, located in the heart of Mysore City. The following details provide

you the necessary information about this prestigious institution of higher

learning.

ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY

The University of Mysore was established on 27th July 1916 by its

founding father, His Highness Sri NalvadiKrishnarajaWodeyar, the then

Maharaja of Mysore. It is the Sixth University established in the country, the

very First in the Princely State of Mysore and the first University in India to

be assessed and accredited with FIVE STAR status in 2000, re-accredited at

A+ level in 2006 and re-accredited again in 2012 with a CGPA of 3.47 at A

grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Location of the University

Mysore city, where the University is located, is the cultural centre of

Karnataka. The city which was the capital of the Wodeyar dynasty, the rulers

of Mysore, is famous for its palaces, temples, gardens and festivals.

Tranquillity and peace reign in this beautiful city where arts are kept alive

along hoary traditions. Being a splendid tourist centre with historical

monuments and unique architecture, it is famous for silk, sandalwood oil and

artifacts of ivory and sandalwood. The city has salubrious climate

throughout the year. It is about 140 kms. south west of Bangalore, the State

capital, and is well connected by rail, road and air.

The postgraduate programmes of the University are distributed over

three campuses in addition to the main campus at Manasagangotri, Mysore.

3

These three campuses are located in Tubinakere near Mandya,

Hemagangotri near Hassan and at Chamarajanagara. The Tubinakere

the territorial jurisdiction of the University of Mysore is now confined to the

four southern districts of the State, viz, Chamarajanagara, Hassan, Mandya

University of Mysore Centenary Celebrations

A Rare Time To Be A Student

It is very rare that one gets an opportunity to be a student of one of the oldest

universities in the country. That time has come. The students who are going

to enroll this year will become part of the history as the University of

Mysore is celebrating the year-long celebrations.

It is a momentous occasion and the importance of this milestone has been

clearly understood by our visionary Vice Chancellor Prof K.S. Rangappa

who has left no stone unturned to see that the Centenary year will go in the

record books that will match the Founding Fathers vision.

NalwadiKrishnarajaWadiyar founded the University on July 27, 1916 with

the assistance of his able Diwan Sir M. Visvesvaraya. This is the sixth

university in the country, the second in South India and first to be started

under the royal patronage.

The celebrations have already begun and none other than the President of the

country Shri Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated it on July 27, 2015 at the Amphi

Theatre. The significance of the occasion stood out as more than 12,000

people had gathered in the stadium which itself is a history that needs to be

recorded.

As part of the celebrations we have already launched the Centenary Logo,

Centenary Website and Centenary Theme Song. The Centenary Historical

play and the Centenary Historical Documentary Film will also be made. A

Coffee Table Book is already in the making which will be released at an

appropriate time.

A book on the History of University of Mysore titled “An Era of

Enlightenment” (One Hundred Years History of University of Mysore)

penned by renowned historian and former Vice Chancellor Prof B. Sheik Ali

who is also an alumnus of the University has been released.

The University of Mysore Centenary Nobel Laureate Lecture Series will

begin from September 4. The feather in the cap for the University is the

hosting of the 103rd Indian Science Congress which will be inaugurated by

the Prime Minister on January 3, 2016.
