Getting the right education is the first big step to launch into a rewarding career and cope with the ever changing global world. Baruipur College is the realization of an ardent zeal and dream of setting up an institution of higher education in Baruipur that initiated as early as in 1954. Our vision is to foster a genuine sense of individual and collective social responsibility in the thousands who throng the portals of this three-decade old institution; to disseminate knowledge and skill, to inculcate a social integration among young people of diverse social and occupational groups, symbolized graphically by our logo in which learners hand in hand gather around a book; it places education as the central medium to understand, uphold and nurture integrity social and national integrity and values of humanity.

Mission:

Education is a concerted and interactive process; a creative endeavour which demands united effort, fervor and devotion of every individual associated with an educational institution. It is facilitated by teachers and the knowledge and creativity they are imbued with are to be imbibed and emulated by the learners. We wish to offer a platform of ‘voice’, that nourishes diversity, – a clear articulation and open exchange of a pupil’s educational aspirations, ideas, demands and complaints - in exploring how the purpose as well as the quality of education can be amalgamated to the idea of justice as the challenges of the 21st Century unfold. Having this in mind our mission is as follows:

Offering quality education by including students of all social and economic sections with special attention and care for the underprivileged.

Developing skills among students with an eye to their future prospects as well as infusing social and human values in their soul.

Making each of our students a human being pledged to serve the society in the broader sense and nation thereby exemplifying the ideal citizen of tomorrow.

The List of successors to the post of President

Message from the President in the last few years. He has always shown keen interest and has lent a helping hand for the holistic development of the college, so that the college may emerge as an acclaimed academic institution in the region.

The college therefore has undertaken a great leap in integrating information and communication technology into the classroom teaching and learning process. Baruipur College is now running Honours course in diff subjects in addition to having general course in Arts, Commerce and science streams, and our humble ambition is to have Honours courses in more subjects in coming years.

From this year, according to State Government order, the entire admission process has been conducted in online platform. The online admission system has made the process much more transparent and accessible to students living in remote areas. The applicants did not only pay the application fees through e-payment mode but also paid the admission fees through e-payment. The students could actually take admission from the comfort of their homes. The college has already introduced CBCS system, which has improved the academic experience of the students by engaging them with more challenging time frame and academic assignments. The news system has not only improved the attendance of the students but has also divided the academic pressure in diff semesters. However, I would ask the newly admitted students to attend college on a regular basis because, as per the University of Calcutta regulation, the students attending at least 75 percent of the total number of classes held will be allowed to appear at the concerned Semester Examinations subject to fulfi of other conditions laid down in the regulations. It is important to inculcate the values of time management and punctuality by ensuring attendance in the regular classes.

Baruipur College is constantly attempting to provide the students the finest infrastructure, innovative technology, computerized library and sophisticated laboratory facilities, besides offering, ample opportunities for extracurricular activities in order to nurture the multifaceted growth opportunities. A dedicated team of teachers, administrative staff, aware and cooperative parents, and a Governing Body imbued with great vision and experience form a cohesive team making efforts to attain the above-mentioned objectives.

Over the years, Baruipur College has been marching forward to inculcate discipline amongst students, establish systematic mechanism of performance assessment of the students and teachers as well, promoting research, arranging industry-academia interactions, undertaking activities to use renewable energy at large to achieve a holistic environment for teaching and learning.

Like previous years, this year also I wholeheartedly welcome the first year, first semester students at Baruipur College. I earnestly believe that the students would have an all-around development of their persona in this temple of learning and they will achieve a level of excellence in their selected field.

Sri Krishna Kumar Das President

True education is to cultivate the self-esteem, dignity, physical and emotional wellb eing with the same importance as that given to academic and material success. Baruipur College works with the core belief that wisdom can be cultivated gradually amongst all individuals. In the present scenario, it is not enough to make students academically suitable; rather, what is more important is to make them prudent enough so that they are able to use their education thoughtfully. It is undeniable that in the present scenario, the academic requirements of today are very diff from those of the bygone days because of mounting competition and with the development of science and technology. The students must be prepared with the skills necessary to encounter the challenges of future. That is also the purpose of our college: to make the surrounding stimulating and purposeful for learning.

Under the guidance and

erudite advices of Shri Biman Bandyopadhyay, Hon’ble Speaker of West Bengal State Assembly Baruipur College has progressed even more rapidly

Message from the Principal Regarding infrastructural developments, many

initiatives are being taken up. Some of them are accomplished and some of them are still in progress. A fully equipped Virtual Class-room, complete with interactive smart-board, projector, and sound systems has been constructed to encourage ICT enabled teaching-learning process. Moreover, the college has also been able to set up solar panels, hence, making the college premise partially solar powered. The college has already instituted Bio-metric attendance system and CCTV system for smooth running of the administrative and academic duties. Recently the college has also constructed the cycle stand to help the students keep their cycles within the college premises safely.

I welcome all the students for selecting this college

for their academic endeavour. CBCS system has already been introduced and Baruipur College has been proactive in implementing this new system for the welfare of the students.

Iwishthecollegewouldprogressforwardovercoming all impediments towards holistic development, which would leave its mark in the annals of higher education in the region.

Dr. Chanchal Kumar Mandal Principal

Baruipur College was

established in the year 1981. Since then, it has been marching step by step towards considerable progress, in matters of academics and infrastructural augmentation.

Achievement and Development

Baruipur College has constructed a cycle- stand for the benefit of the college students. The cycle-stand sprawling over one thousand square feet of area can accommodate hundreds of cycles safely and securely. Large number of students comes to the college by riding bicycle and a proper cycle-stand was much in need for them. The cycle-stand would be clearly visible through close circuit camera surveillance, offer added security. The large gate provides effortless movement for the

students and their ride even during peak time. The cycle-stand would be especially helpful for the students to keep their cycles during the rainy season as the shelter would allow them to keep it safe and secure.

The NSS Unit of Baruipur College took a proactive role in response to the flood situation of Kerala. The students collected more than four thousand rupees through donations from a number of students and teachers at the college. The NSS volunteers carried the donation box from one class to another and also to the teachers and asked them to contribute generously for the benefit of those distressed due to the flood condition. Nearly 400 people have already lost their lives, over 7.25 lakh are in relief camps, tens of thousands of houses have collapsed, one lakh kilometers of roads have been destroyed and 134 bridges damaged. The donated money will be very beneficial to the families of those who have lost their lives and homes. All donations received by the volunteers will be duly sent to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. The fund will be used for granting relief to families and individuals affected and would help to rebuild the lives of people in the state.

Health awareness program on campus

On 31st January 2018, the NSS Unit of Baruipur College and Department of Health, Government of West Bengal had jointly organized a students’ health awareness program at Baruipur College. Different sessions of the program included generating consciousness regarding public health and hygiene, sensitization regarding dengue and malaria, anti-tobaccoawareness, generating mass consciousness regarding PCPNDT act. The program was a great success with high active participation of the students of the college. The interactive lecture session was followed by an essay competition of the students on Anti-Tobacco Movement and prize distribution ceremony.

Students’ participation in outreach activities

On World Yoga Day, the students participated in Yoga workshop organized by the Department of Health, Government of West Bengal. A good number of students of Baruipur College have actively participated in various outreach programmes under National Service Scheme throughout the year. Students have done public health awareness program in the adjacent Biral Village moving door to door. Cleanliness programme and plantation program were

organized as to increase environmental awareness.

Student’s toilets for better health and hygiene on campus

The college has also completed the construction of toilets for students. There are ten fully furnished toilets for both boys and girls. It has been accepted for a considerable time now that clean toilets contribute to good health and it is necessary to work towards promoting hygienic toilets on campus. The toilets have been designed to keep personal hygiene in view. There is scope for proper ventilation, natural light and easy cleaning provision. There was a need for more toilets for the students considering the increasing number of student’s admission in past few years. These new students toilets would certainly offer the students a more healthy and disease free campus.

The up-gradation of Baruipur College library continues with newly established E-Library section within the library premises. E-Library is now a registered member of National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST), which is jointly executed by INFLIBNET Centre and the INDEST-AICTE Consortium, IIT Delhi. The E-library at Baruipur College provides support for all academic levels including students, teachers, researchers of all disciplines.

The E-Library provides computer access, through which a large number of library and information resources will be available to the students and teachers. E-Library would also help the students to prepare for entrance and competitive examination. It would enable students to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and would facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. The authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher’s website once they are duly authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed at the INFLIBNET Centre.

The Career Counseling Cell at Baruipur College has established a separate section in the college library to assist the students in the career oriented objectives. It contains information about a wide range of career choices, how to write resume and cover letter, preparation guides for interview, effective work search methods, tip sheets, and much more. A number of career oriented magazines, like Karmakhetra, PeshaPrabesh, Competition Refresherhave been displayed in the Career Resource and Counseling Library section that would provide up to date information regarding jobs, and competitive examinations and mock test papers. The students can access these resources and can consult with the Career Counseling Cell members for proper guidance and advice for their future.

Prof. Asim Mandal, Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Narendrapur delivered an invited lecture on the topic, Dynamic and Dimensions of Romanticism in 19th Century Literature on 18 January 2018. The English Honours students learnt that the Romantics were inspired by the

environment, and encouraged people to venture into new territories – both literally and metaphorically. Prof Mandal explained that in their writings they made the world seem a place with infi unlimited potential. A key idea in Romantic poetry is the concept of the sublime. The students understood that the term conveys the feelings people experience when they see awesome landscapes, or fi themselves in extreme situations which elicit both fear and admiration. Through power point presentation the students also witnessed a number of images related to Romanticism. Overall, the lecture helped the students understand the fi nuances of the Romantic literature that continues to exert a powerful infl on popular culture.

The base of modern education system rests completely upon the psychological aspects of the learns. From that perspective modern education is as much ‘learning by doing’ as it is ‘learning by showing’. In an age dominated by the social networking sites, the learners are slowly but steadily taken away from the printed world of knowledge. It is in this connection, the literary adaptations play an important role in constructing the cognitive domain of the learners.

Noti Binodini by Girish Chandra Ghosh and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen are the two books to film adaption we managed to show our learners to better their understanding of the text. Although it is said that there is no alternative to books, movies provide an aspect which the books lack : visuals. This is exactly where the characters like Binodini Dashi, Elizabeth Bennet, Darcy become more and more life like when they appear on screen. So, visualizing the story on a movie screen can also make clear certain things that were confusing in the books. For examples the narrative method of these two books, particularly the latter one , may produce among the learns every sort of syntactical difficulty , but movies can display all these things without the perplexing language. And this in no doubt ,is the biggest gain of the movies showed to the learners.
