Note: Federal law requires the use of a separate harness and lifeline with suspension supports. (Reference OSHA standards.) To comply with federal law, the full body harness must include a back D-ring for connection with an independent lifeline and must incorporate a fall arrest sub-system that will limit the maximum free fall to six feet or less and limit the maximum arresting force to 1,800 lbs. or less. Contact DBI/SALA for further information on compliance issues.

THE ABCD’s of Fall Arrest
OSHA says…[1926.502(d)(15)(i)-(ii)]: “Anchorages used for attachment of personal fall arrest equipment shall be independent of any anchorage being used to support or suspend platforms and capable of supporting at least 5,000 lb. (22kN) per employee attached, or shall be designed, installed and used as follows: …as part of a complete personal fall arrest system which maintains a safety factor of at least two; …under the supervision of a qualified person.”
OSHA says…[1926.502(d)(16)(iii), (iv), (v)]: “Personal Fall Arrest Systems, when stopping a fall, shall limit maximum arresting force on an employee to 1,800 lbs.(8 kN) when used with a body harness; be rigged such that an employee can neither free-fall more than 6-feet (1.8 M), not contact any lower level.”

SRL Swingfall
H
D
Swing falls occur when the anchor-
age point is not directly above the
point where a fall occurs. The force
of striking an object while swinging
(horizontal speed of the user due to
pendulum effect) may cause seri-
ous injury. In a swing fall, the total
vertical fall distance will be greater
than if the user had fallen when
directly below the anchorage point.
Theusermustthereforeaccountforan
increase in the total free falldistance.
SRLs provide greater horizontal and
verticalmobilitythanlanyards,increas-
ingtheopportunityforswingfalls.See
the adjoining chart for recommended
horizontalworkingdistances forSRLs.
Minimize swing falls by working as
close to directly below the anchorage
pointaspossible.
See user instructions supplied with each product for complete details on swing fall.
