Jodhpur: Bharatiya Janta Party state presi-dent Satish Poonia on Friday said that Con-gress party is heading towards a big division in the state and chief minister Ashok Gehlot would turn out to be “Bahadur Shah Jafar ‘’ of the Congress in Ra-jasthan.

Poonia said, in a press conference in Jodhpur, that he was neither an astrologer nor a prophet, but he could say with confi-dence that the Congress party was in Rajasthan now headed towards a very big divide and Ashok Gehlot would prove to be “Bahadur Shah Zafar” of the par-ty. Rebutting the claims of Congress that the party in the state was

united, Poonia said that they were united by hands, not by hearts.

“Congress is united by hands and not by heart. MLAs have con-stantly been blaming the ministers for not listen-ing to them. Entire party is divided and its organi-zational structure has crumbled with no dis-

trict units,” Poonia said.“Congress is head-

ing for an irreparable division, there is a huge gap among lead-ers which cannot be plugged,” he said. Poo-nia was in Jodhpur to pay tribute to Jaswant Singh, held Gehot re-sponsible for spurt in crime in the state.

Jodhpur: The opposi-tion Bharatiya Janta Party leaders on Friday took a dig at the state government over the in-cident of a temple priest being burnt alive in Ka-rauli district and set up a three member inquiry committee.

State BJP President Satish Poonia said the Rajasthan police under Congress rule seemed to be following the slo-gan ‘apradhi mast, jan-ta trast’ (criminals hav-ing fun, public in dis-tress). The committee comprises Ramcharan Bohra, Alka Singh Gur-jar, Jitendra Meena. BJP state chief spokes-person Ramlal Sharma said that the committee would talk to the people present on the occasion, the victim’s family, and the local administra-tion to prepare a factual report and submit it to Poonia.

“Rajasthan police’s slogan seems to have changed to ‘apradhi mast, janta trast’ under CM Ashok Gehlot,” Poonia told the media persons in Jodhpur where he had come to pay tribute to the de-ceased BJP leader Jas-want Singh Jasol.

Terming the incident as “inhuman” and “hor-

rifying”, Poonia held the CM responsible for spurt in crime in the state, especially the crime against females.

“Chief minister Ashok Gehlot com-mented over crime in other states but not about crimes in his state. Crime control is not in the priority of his government,” he said.

He said that the Con-gress party had not been able to find a suit-able person to be a home minister in the last two years. Poonia said that the BJP would ask the government to release a white paper on crimes in the state.

said, “The law system in Rajasthan has reached the abyss.”

Rajendra Rathore said “Crime graph is in-creasing but the state government is silent like every time,” he said.

uman attention is a scarce, yet commercially valuable re-source today,

and social media competes for access to it. The wealth of digital connectivity and advances in browsing and filtering gives internet us-ers more options and in-creases their perceived control over cyberspace. However, this is only a part of the whole truth.

Tech companies often enjoy exclusive access to data characterizing online behavior, which is then processed to filter prefer-ences and customize con-tent. Such personalization can save us hours of searching, for instance by presenting us with news in our geographical area and

matching previous brows-ing. However, it can also be used to promote certain content, such as advertis-ing and potential agendas, that prevents us from see-ing the big picture.

SOCIAL OBESITYMany social media plat-forms combine their intel-ligent algorithms with in-fluence elements, bor-rowed from games and psychology, to grab our at-tention and persuade us to stay active online. In addic-tive domains such as gam-bling, total immersion and losing any sense of real-world time and space are common. Indeed, casinos do not have clocks or win-dows. This is not far from software like TikTok, where each spin will pre-

sent you with unpredicta-ble, concentrated content. The immersive design and uncertainty combined with social proof: For in-stance, how many people liked and commented on a sketch are all carefully de-signed influence elements.

The one difference with gambling is probably the lack of warning measures and limit-setting. Taken to-gether, all of the above can

and should make us seri-ously question whether we are indeed as free and con-scious of our own online choices as we think we are.

Human beings are social creatures, and we tend to be influenced by the opinions and actions of others. We seek to belong to groups and are curious to under-stand how others perceive us. It helps us to learn and shapes our behavior and

decisions. At the same time, we desire autonomy, inde-pendence and distinctive-ness. While it is natural that social media is de-signed to host that social interaction, its density, con-tinuity and novel means are different in nature and scale. In a connected online world, it is always possible to socialize, and this argu-ably leads to “social obesi-ty,” leaving us with little time for self-reflection.

The continuous nature of online social spaces may also trigger negative expe-riences such as the “fear of missing out” (FOMO) and lead to frequent checking of social media and seek-ing validation. FOMO leads to distraction, cogni-tive overload and other risks such as accessing so-

cial media during a lecture or even while driving. Some claim to be able to multitask, but this can, in many cases, just be denial, which is one symptom of behavioral addiction.

COUNTERMEASURESBy accepting that observa-tion, we need effective countermeasures and poli-cies to increase the con-scious and informed nature of our digital consumption but, until now, these protec-tive resources remain lack-ing. Education about the persuasive and addictive design elements of these spaces and techniques to combat them would be po-tentially helpful to build resilience to temptation and unconscious usage.

n an unprecedented move Chinese embassy in New Del-hi has issued a series of di-rectives to Indian media and media houses regarding cov-erage of impending National Day of Taiwan on 10th Octo-ber. Press release issued by the Press Section of the em-bassy which appears to be more of a diktat to Indian media about reporting of the National Day of Taiwan says, “We will like to remind our media friends that there is only one China in the world, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate govern-ment representing the whole of China. Taiwan is inalien-able part of China’s territo-ry.” It further threatens the media, “Taiwan shall not be referred to as a ‘country’ (‘na-tion’) or “The Republic of China” or the leader of Chi-na’s Taiwan region as “Presi-dent”, so as not to send wrong signals to the general public.”

No such advisory was is-sued by the Embassy in 2019. However, after the event, it issued a statement on “Mis-reporting by Indian Media on Taiwan” seriously objecting to and expressing strong dis-satisfaction at some of the Indian media referring to Taiwan as a “country”. “Tai-wan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. It is an ob-jective fact and a universally recognized norm governing international relations” em-phasized the Chinese envoy.

What is so different this year that the embassy has pre-empted and issued a virtual threat to the Indian media? China is preparing for the cel-ebration of the hundredth year of formation of the Com-munist Party of China (CCP) under the watchful eye of all-powerful Xi Jinping. The cur-rent behaviour of the Chinese diplomatic staff is the mani-festation of its “Wolf Warri-or” diplomacy. Xi wants China not only to be powerful but assertive as well. It is also an application of China’s “3 W Strategy” which includes me-dia warfare. Xi desires that CCP should not only control selected foreign media but also be able to manipulate it to

further its ideology and por-tray its Comprehensive Na-tional Power (CNP).

But why China is so sensi-tive about Taiwan? It is said that Taiwan would be the main trigger of Sino-Ameri-can conflict if it ever mani-fests. Ironically, the USA does not officially recognise the Republic of China or Taiwan. Even India doesn’t. Only 17 countries in the world recog-nise Taiwan. Even the UNO does not recognise the Repub-lic of China which was a sig-natory to its formation. Yet the USA is the biggest arms supplier to Taiwan, it’s 11th largest trading partner and avowed guarantor of its sov-ereignty. The self-ruled is-land’s uncertain future, amid tensions between Washington and a newly powerful Beijing is the greatest unresolved legacy of the Chinese civil war. While China claims Tai-wan to be one of its regions and refers to it as the Taiwan region, the latter is in no mood to alter the status quo and lose its status as an inde-pendent democratic nation. Xi has offered to resolve the matter on the pattern of Hong Kong by advocating “One Na-tion, Two Systems” model which has been rejected by the island nation.

Dwelling into history, the dispute is a legacy of Mao led the Chinese civil war. The is-land formally became a Chi-nese province only in 1887. But China’s faltering Qing impe-

rial government was forced to cede it to Japan in 1895 after a brief war. Japan ran Taiwan as a colony until 1945, when it was effectively handed over to Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist (KMT) government in China.

In 1949 Mao Zedong’s forc-es won the Chinese civil war and the KMT fled to the is-land, ruling it under martial law until democratizing in The 1980s, while the Commu-nists controlled China. It continues to remain a dis-pute to date since no peace treaty has ever been signed. However, China’s official po-sition on Taiwan is unam-biguous. It claims that Tai-wan is, was, and always has been an inseparable part of China and that international law support China’s claim. This is grilled into every mainland Chinese child’s mind as part of the CCP’s ide-ology campaign with no sec-ond thought on the issue and no public discussion of alter-nate views is permitted.

CCP wants outright reunifi-cation, the sooner the better, seeing the recovery of the is-land as the final chapter in the

civil war and end of past hu-miliations when China was forced to cede territory to for-eigners. Xi has succeeded in reasserting party control over the society, which had loos-ened during the era of his im-mediate predecessors who believed in “collective leader-ship.” His clarion call to the nation after assuming its con-trol was “Don’t forget the orig-inal intention. Stick to the mission”. With multifarious threats challenging him the slogan has become more rele-vant in the present days and is emerging as a battle cry for unity and perseverance. With increasing US interference in Taiwan and the non-reconcil-iatory approach of its newly elected hardliner President Iron lady Tsai Ing-wen, China is becoming increasingly sen-sitive and restive about Tai-wan. On the other hand, Tai-wan is becoming more asser-tive and confident. During the ongoing pandemic, the Tai-wanese were denied entry in various countries believing them to be Chinese since their passport is of the Republic of China. The Taiwanese govern-

ment has therefore decided to change the cover of their pass-ports to read “Taiwan Pass-port” while retaining the Re-public of China in Mandarin. It has its own currency New Taiwan dollar controlled by the central bank of the Repub-lic of China. It is increasingly stamping Taiwanese made goods as ‘Made in Taiwan’, all this is not going well with the CCP which is increasingly threatening to punish errant island nation. China is also worried and annoyed with the fact that more and more na-tions are speaking up for Tai-wan and are reluctant to back down under Chinese pressure.

Xi is being labelled as a re-visionist and expansionist and the world is getting unit-ed to counter China’s expan-sionist designs under the banner of democratic forces and supporting the Taiwan-ese cause. There are growing voices in India for recogni-tion of Taiwan though that may not be easy due to pre-vailing agreements and trea-ties with PRC. However, a change in intent and desire to strengthen relations be-tween the two countries has been signalled by the present regime by deputing two of its senior party leaders to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new President.

The CCP is unwilling to set-tle for anything less than re-unification. For Xi Jinping has an additional emotional angle as well related to family

history. China regards Taiwan as an unfinished part of the civil war and Xi is a firm be-liever of this historic mission.

Apart from being an unfin-ished mission of the civil war, it is the geo-strategic location and buzzing high-tech micro-chip industry of Taiwan is a compelling reason for China to claim ownership of the is-land territory. Taiwan is also the world’s 22nd largest econ-omy and an important supply chain link of Silicon Valley. Many high-tech companies from the mainland have changed the base on the island territory with Taiwan emerg-ing as a potential high-tech superpower. It is home to the world’s biggest contract chip-maker, Taiwan Semiconduc-tor Manufacturing Co Ltd.

Taiwan’s location and econ-omy are critical to China in its pursuance of becoming the ‘numero uno’ world power. If Taiwan becomes integral to China, as desired by the later it would become a Pacific Pow-er, strengthen its position in the South China Sea and be in a position to threaten vital US interests in the Pacific, have the leverage to cut off oil sup-plies to Japan and South Ko-rea, important US allies in the region. Economically, it would have control over the world’s major cutting-edge technolo-gies. All this explains China’s sensitivities viz a viz Taiwan and its allergy to other nations calling it a “country” rather than Taiwan region of Peo-ple’s Republic of China. The USA on the other hand does not want to take any chance in the security of the island-na-tion that may help China to fulfill its mission. Stepped-up US support for Taiwan has an-gered China which has often cautioned USA that the same amounts to US support for Tai-wan Independence which is an anathema to China and China may forcibly occupy the island by launching military operations across the strait.

With India and China on the verge of war in Eastern Ladakh and heightened anti-China sentiments across the country, the Chinese are ap-prehensive of the Indian me-dia giving prominence to Taiwan on its National Day. It is to pre-empt the same and gauge India’s concerns to its sensitivities that the adviso-ry has been issued by the Chi-nese Embassy.

Cases in India dip below 9 lakh markNew Delhi: For the first time after a month, the total number of ac-tive COVID-19 cases in India dipped below the 9 lakh mark with 8.93 active cases reported on Thursday, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in-formed.

The last time the number of active cases was reported below 9 lakh was September 9 with 8.97 lakh cases. The number of active cases in the country now stands at 8,93,592, about 12.94 per cent of the total active cases, ac-cording to the Ministry.

The total number of recoveries stands at 59,06,069, taking the gap between recovered cas-es and active cases to 50,12,477.

The recovery rate fur-ther improved to 85.52 per cent with 78,365 re-coveries and discharges reported in the last 24 hours. The total num-ber of recoveries has been exceeding the number of new active cases (70,496) for three consecutive weeks.

Post the launch, the state governments will physically distrib-ute the cards to people from more than 750 vil-lages across six states. “The historic move set to transform rural In-dia” will enable around 100,000 property hold-ers to download their property cards through an SMS link delivered on their mobile phones.

COPS MAKE A BEELINE FOR LATHAR’S ‘AASHIRWAAD’!

One interesting aspect of the bureaucracy, be it from

any state of the country, is that when it senses that ‘winds of change’ have started blowing, it models itself according to the new trend. It is thus little surprise then that police offi cials have been making a beeline for the Rajasthan Police Head Quarters. Simply put, the DGP of Rajasthan police is set to change and in all probability ML Lathar will become the new DGP an therefore, the third fl oor of the PHQ and

particularly Lathar’s offi ce has suddenly become the most sought after place in the seven storey PHQ. Currently, serving as DG (Crime), Lathar sits in his plush third fl oor offi ce where junior offi cials, and in particular those that are posted in fi eld, are turning up in huge numbers every day to pay ‘obeisance’ to the soon to be declared ‘chief’ of the khaki force. All this, so that those who are facing the ‘brunt’ of current dispensation, may be provided some ‘relief’ while those who are already in crucial positions, are trying to ‘save’ themselves from any possible ‘strike-off’ and thus everyone is seeking Lathar’s ‘Aashirwaad’.

While, the entire khaki team in Rajasthan is upbeat with the changing dynamics of the state force in the next few days, another question that has raised curiosity in the police circles is the appoint-ment of new DG (Crime). As of now, Lathar holds the posi-tion but with him being touted as the new DGP, word is that Saurabh Srivastava or Ravi Prakash Meharda may be the front runners for the position of DG Crime.

LAST LAUGH! WHO IS THIS MLA?

It is a known fact that the legislative and executive are always in perpetual

tussle with each other with each side displaying its ‘power’ in more than one way. And several times it happens that the executive ‘acts’ while being completely under the ambit of its ‘rules and regulations’ and legislative becomes troubled on its own. One such incident occurred during the complete lockdown phase in Dholpur when a ‘honourable MLA’ hailing from Bharatpur-Dholpur area was stopped by a constable. A ‘mere’ constable stopping a sitting ‘young’ MLA irked the hot blood who wasn’t even wearing the mask and was roaming without permission! In his anger, the MLA not only bad mouthed

the constable, but also misbehaved with him and thinking that he had taught the khakhi clad man a lesson the young MLA left. But the episode was the perfect platform for the khakhi man to actually exercise his powers without the fear of infl uence of senior offi cials and he did just that. The constable mentioned the entire episode in the police station’s ‘Roznamcha’ or daily report, and since then till now and God knows how many times more, the MLA is running from pillar to post to get the ‘details’ removed. The legislator even met DGP in the matter and is even requesting senior politicians to use their infl uence and provide him relief. However, it appears that the last laugh, in the matter, is certainly of the constable! —KARTIKEY DEV SINGH

JDC: Enforcement Branch has a big role in planned developmentFirst India Bureau

Jaipur: JDC Gaurav Goyal, on Friday, while chairing a review meet-ing of the vigilance wing of JDA asked the officers to play their im-portant role of stopping illegal constructions in the city effectively.

Goyal asked them to bifurcate the illegal constructions and en-croachments in three categories while acting on them. The first cate-gory should be of the

encroachment on govt land where zero-toler-ance attitude should be displayed. In the second category illegal con-structions like adequate parking in the commer-

cial complexes should be taken up. Goyal asked the officers to check compliance of 60:40 ratio rule, fire fighting systems, light-ning arrester etc while checking construction of any building.

JDC stressed on strict implementation of all rules so that public is not harassed in anyway. Speaking about the third category Goyal said it should include illegal construction on private properties of

individuals where counselling should be done initially. JDC also asked officers to deal cautiously with habitu-al complainants.

On illegal colonies plotted on agricultural lands the JDC told offic-ers to ask concerned sub division officer to use Section 175 of Ra-jasthan Tenancy Act. He also asked the vigi-lance wing to work in coordination with all zone officers to reduce delay in works.

Cong with farmers, 3 laws will weaken them: DotasraYogesh Sharma

Jaipur: Congress will hold a Kisan Sammelan (meeting of farmers) on Satur-day in Jaipur, against the farm laws enacted by the central govern-ment.

PCC president Go-vind Singh Do-tasara, on Friday, said that the farm-ers across the coun-try are resented over the farm laws which, he claimed, are anti-farmers.

“The Congress par-ty is standing with the farmers in this time of crisis. The three laws brought in haste will weaken the farmers,” he said.

Dotasra told re-porters that a farm-ers meeting will take place in Birla audito-rium, in Jaipur on Saturday, in which the party and farmers

will discuss the laws.He said that the

programme will be attended by the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, min-isters, legislators and senior leaders of the party.

Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the laws, Do-tasra said that Modi, before becoming the PM, used to talk of doubling farmers in-come; and making

MSP mandatory but he changed as these laws were brought that conspire to end MSP and Mandi sys-tem; and to encour-age big industrialists.

On Supreme court’s direction to the Rajasthan State Election Commis-sion (SEC) to notify the election pro-gramme within one week for municipal corporations, the PCC president said

that the directions will be followed.

He said that look-ing at the Corona pan-demic, everyone wanted to get the polls postponed.

However, since there was no relief from the SC, the gov-ernment will follow the directions.

Hitting at BJP, Do-tasra said the party has failed as an oppo-sition in the state.

“They get direc-tion to topple the d e m o c r a t i c a l l y elected govern-ment. Through Hathras incident, a horrifying face of CM Yogi Govern-ment came up and to divert peoples’ attention from it, they intentionally magnified small in-cidents of Ra-jasthan but people understand all this,” he said.

Jaipur: The anti-eva-sion teams of the commercial taxes de-partment targeted the Oswal soap group on Friday by raiding its various offices & premises.

The SGST zone-3 an-ti-evasion team took the initiative due to the group not paying GST commensurate with the increased soap sales during the corona cri-sis along with some tips it had received from its sources. The operation

began at 11 am on Fri-day with raids on one location each of Oswal group in Malviya Na-gar, Mansarovar, Bassi & Brahmapuri while 2 premises in Kanota in-dustrial area were also raided. The teams start-ed with raiding 5 loca-tions initially, later one more was added.

During the course of the raids the SGST officers have said to have seized a pile of documents and elec-tronic gadgets all of which will be scruti-nized in detail now.

The officers involved in the raids, which continued late in the evening, expect to dis-cover evasion of crores of rupees of GST.

As soon as the news of these raids went pub-lic other soap manufac-turers and C&Fs in the city were seen shifting documents from their premises. It is notewor-thy that the soap indus-try, as an exception, saw a boom due to much publicised Covid guide-lines during last 6 months.

New Delhi: The issue of a criminal FIR in phone taping case against Pilot’s media advisor Lokendra Sin-gh and a senior jour-nalist and Rajasthan editor of leading na-tional news channel ‘Aaj Tak’ Sharat Ku-mar, has taken a new turn, and virtually opened a pandora’s box in an already ‘dis-turbed’ relationship between Chief Minis-ter Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot.

The issue was raised by Pilot to a Sonia ap-pointed three member committee and there is a general feeling among the members of the com-mittee that such ‘ac-tions’ should be avoided in the larger interest of the unity of the party.

But by making Gehlot government’s stand very clear on this sensi-tive issue, a Gehlot

trusted PCC Chief Go-vind Singh Dotasara formally made a men-tion of this issue in his Friday press con-ference at Jaipur by saying that “There are no two camps in Con-gress. No illegal ac-

tion will be taken against any journo or anyone else in Ra-jasthan. The party is one united unit and no action out of enmity, or against the law of the land, will ever be taken against any-

one.”Dotasara’s comments

have raised suspense over the future of this FIR but he has smartly kept both the options open. One option is to put a closure report or FR on political grounds and the second option is to let allow the law of the land to take its course against the accused. Knowing well Gehlot’s secret and unpredicta-ble moves, no one is cer-tain that what will be the ultimate fate of this FIR?”

Meanwhile Pilot’s media advisor Loken-dra has sought two week’s time from the police to present his version and the police is likely to accede the request.

Moreover, Sharat Ku-mar released a video on Friday and said that he was ready to face any in-vestigation of the police in the phone tapping case investigation.

SS RAJAMOULIHAPPY BIRTHDAY

f cinema is a di-rector’s medium, then SS Rajamouli is its amulet. In a span of 18 years, the 47-year-old filmmaker carved

a niche for himself by helming 11 back-to-back successful films. Right from his directorial debut ‘Student No. 1’ in 2001, the Baahubali director has al-ways tried to transcend cinematic boundaries with his incredible imagina-tion, arresting screenplay, and terrific action blocks.

Rajamouli is celebrating his 47th birthday and sev-eral celebrities took to so-cial media and wished this legend of Indian cinema. SS Rajamouli is fabulous at what he does and it’s no ex-aggeration that he’s con-sidered one of the best commercial cinema direc-tors of the country. Be it Baahubali or Eega (Mak-khi), he has managed to impress and make an im-pact irrespective of the scale of his film and has pushed the envelope with each film.

In a hero-worshipping film industry like Tolly-wood, only a few filmmak-

ers hold the power to over-shadow the charisma of their leading men among the viewers and take them all into their world. SS Ra-jamouli is one amongst them and without a doubt; he is perhaps the best sto-ryteller that we have today in India. At present, the ace director is hands full with the fictional action-drama RRR starring Junior NTR, Ram Charan, Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn in lead roles.

Also, while the number of corona-infected patients is increasing, the number of those who beat it is not less. ‘Bahubali’ director SS Rajamouli also got corona infected. His family, along with him, had also been hit by the infection two weeks ago, but have now recov-ered. —City First
