New Mechanism for Duty and Tax Exemptionfrom MIDA

Effective May 2, 2014, manufacturers would no longer be required to submit applications for exemption of import dutyand/or sales tax for machinery, equipment spare parts and consumables to the Malaysian Investment Development

Authority (MIDA). A new self-declaration mechanism has been introduced which requires manufacturers to apply once toMIDA for a confirmation letter as a manufacturer and apply for permission to import the products free from Customsduties. The new mechanism aims to eliminate the backlog of import duty and sales tax exemption applications andreduce the costs of doing business as bank guarantees for cargo clearance were no longer required.

The goods are new, unused and used directly in the manufacture of finished goods at the approved manufacturers’ premises.

The list of documents required and the process flow involved in the self-declaration method can be downloaded fromwww.mida.gov.my or obtained from the FMM website at www.fmm.org.my – Members Club/Circulars/Customs Desk.
