INTRODl JCTION

Ranging from gay male pornography to lesbian separatist politics, the holdingsof lesbian and gay journals at the National Library of Scotland (NLS) are asignificant resource for students of the history of sexual politics. However, until publication of this bibliography, there has been no "key" to theseholdings. making it difficult for those not conversant with our history to accessthis material.

Firstly, therefore, this paper is intended to provide a tool for extending thematerial available to students of lesbian and gay history, both specifically inScotland and more generally in Britain and Ireland. Whilst Lesbian and GayStudies in Britain is generally considered to be in its infancy, it is to be hopedthat some of the best aspects of the burgeoning Lesbian and Gay Studies inAmerica will come to Britain before long. This paper is a modest contributionto that process.

Secondly, this work removes one morc excuse for excluding the contributionand history of lesbians and gay men from academic work and research inScotland. Students of politics, social history, law, sociology, theology, film andmedia and many other disciplines will find source material in these journals.

Thirdly, although the NLS holdings are impressive, there are some significantomissions. I hope that this work will encourage publishers of all lesbian andgay journals to deposit copies with NLS and encourage anyone with copies ofparticular issues of joumals missing from the holdings to gift them to thelibrary. In particular it would be of great value if NLS could secure furthereditions of the Scottish lesbian journal Gayzelte (see page 13) and of any of theScottish journals listed in Appendix Two.

Lastly I want people to read and enjoy these journals. Whether you arerediscovering a magazine that stimulates personal memories for you ordiscovering whole new areas of lesbian and gay publications, you will berewarded well by the library. However, it should be noted that the NLS doesnot see itself as a recreational facility and requires readers to state that they areundertaking research.

Note: This paper was to have been published by the Politics Department ofEdinburgh University in their "Sexual Citizenship" series.

i

USING THE BIBUOGRAPHY

The titles in bold in the contents list are those which I consider to be ofparticular value either for the scope of their contents or their longevity. Theplace of publication is given along with the years of publication represented inthe NLS holdings.

In the main listings. the title of the journal comes at the top of each entry.followed by the NLS shelf mark on the left and the place of publication on theright along with the name of the publishing group where appropriate.

HOLDINGSThe number of the issue is given first followed by the year(s) represented bythe holdings. Where a journal is not numbered, publication dates are used. Some journals were not consistent in their numbering.

FORMATThe size of the journal is given both by its dimensions and its number of pages. Please note that the paper sizes are only an indication as a bewildering varietyof paper sizes have been used over the years. The frequency of publicationfollows.

CONTENTSI have sought to include in this seclion any material that makes up more than anoccasional part of the journal. Again, it should be noted that this can give onlyan indication of the range ofm3terial.

I would welcome feedback in the form of corrections, additions, or constructivecomments on this work.

BRIAN DEMPSEYEdinburgh,

February 1995

APPENDIX ONE: The lesbian and gay press in Britain

The history of publication for, and/or by, lesbians and gay men is largely thestory of homosexual self organisation. This process of self organisation gotunder way in Britain in the years following the Wolfenden Report1 of 1957which saw widespread public debate of society's attitude towardshomosexuals. Gay men, and then lesbians, were to take advantage of therelative openness of debate not only to organise as self declared homosexualsbut to publish works reflecting their experiences and demands.

Before the early Sixties, homosexuals in Britain had only been able to accessthe occasional journal from America and most contacts with the scene weremade through word of mouth. British publications in the 1950s were limited tosoft porn "physique" magazines for men such as Adonis or Manifique, whichwere closeted and had little or no written content. The situation reflected thetotal lack of any organisation of what would, at the time, have been calledhomosexual men or women.

In 1958, the year after the Wolfenden Committee made its report, theHomosexual Law Reform Society was formed in London to press for thelimited decriminalisation for gay men and in response to the failure of the thenTory government to implement the Wolfenden Report's proposals. Three yearslater, in 1961 they began to publish Man and Society, the first openlyhomosexual magazine in Britain. The journal reflected the conservative natureof the organisation with dry academic articles from representatives of the legal, medical and religious professions arguing for better treatment of homosexualsand mainly addressed to straight, liberal society in respectful tones.

In 1964, a far livelier journal for homosexual women, Arena Three, waslaunched in London by the Minorities Research Group. Every month, until theend of the Sixties, Arena Three presented not only articles about the place ofhomosexual women in society and history but articles from lesbians abouttheir lives and experiences. This first hand and relatively uncloseted approachmakes Arena Three a tremendous resource for students of the history ofsexual movements and was a more positive statement than that made by Manand Society.

When Parliament finally passed most of the recommendations of theWolfenden Committee report into English law in 1967, lesbian and gaypublications were about to expand at an unprecedented rate. Although the1967 Act did not deal with publications directly, limited decriminalisationremoved some of the fears of prosecution for publishers, especially on theissue of printing contact advertisements and listing pubs and clubs frequented

24

by homosexual men and women. The changes in both law and attitude werefollowed in 1969170 by the phenomenon of Gay Liberation. These forcesbrought about the birth of a number of more open and attractive lesbian andgay journals which borrowed from the "counter culture" magazines such as ITand Oz.

The ability and righl to publish written material is an important one for anygroup in society. All groups, from the Vatican to the women's liberationmovement, have sought access to the written word, and some have activelysought to deny that access to others. As Lenin noted, through publications agroup can set about organising itself, reaching out to like minded people andengaging with society to further its ends. The lesbian and gay press hasplayed a part in educating and mobilising people about a whole range ofissues from police harassment to sexual health issues. They have provided aforum where people can argue and formulate theories about what it means tobe a lesbian or a gay man. Publication allows the group to control how itpresents itself, both to itself and to others.

Thanks to the reactionary publicist Mary Whitehouse, the best knownpublication of the lesbian and gay movement has been Gay News. During theyears 1972 to 1983 Gay News produced unrivalled coverage of lesbian andgay life in Britain with a mix of news, in-depth articles, scene news and puband club listings. The prosecution of the paper in 1977 by Whitehouse forblasphemy brought many lesbians and gays together to defend "their" papersupported by many straights. Although Whitehouse won in the courts, thecase largely backfired. Gay News was of great importance to many isolatedindividuals (including this author). It was widely available which meant thatpeople too intimidated to go to, or living too far away from, lesbian and gayvenues could begin the process of coming out. One of the most importantaspects of the paper was its extensive listings of gay switchboards andbefriending organisation and non gay-scene groups as well as hundreds oflesbian and gay pubs and clubs throughout Brilain.

During the seventies and eighties journals appeared for young people (e.g.Gay Youth), for isolated lesbians (e.g. Sequel), for trade unionists (e.g.CPSGG Newsletter), for Christians (e.g. LGCM Journal) and other sadomasochists (e.g. SMart). Many journals for gay men included pornography asa major element (e.g. Vulcan) while others published complex theoreticalarguments in decidedly un-glossy formats (e.g. Gay Marxist). Some lesbianjournals sought to address the issue of the relationship of lesbians to thewomen's movement (e.g. Red Herring).

The National Library also has a small number of bisexual, paedophile and

25

transvestite litles. The question of Ihe validity of connections between thelesbian and gay movement and these sexual minorities continues to becontroversial2. These conneclions, however, are real and any honest analysisof the lesbian and gay movement will have to address both the content andthe censorship of these conneclions.

The Scottish journal scene has been dominated by one magazine GayScotland, which has been published continuously for 23 years (1971-78 asSMG News)3. Gay Scotland has provided a forum for many contentiousissues to be aired, has soughl to inciude women, young people and, morerecently, bisexuals in its pages. Other journals published in Scotland includelesbian journals such as Gayzetle and Red Herring and free-sheets of thegay scene Seals Men and Pulse. Each journal addresses its own areas ofconcern and provides useful material for research. By no means all of theBritish "nalional" journals have succeeded in carrying Scottish news, the majorexception being Gay News.

For a number for reasons, tilles aimed at gay men appear to have been morenumerous than lesbian titles, and sometimes more long-lived and betterproduced. Some of the reasons musl include the fact that as women, lesbianswould generally earn less than men and so gay consumerism came morequickly to gay men than to lesbians and the resources for publishing wereoften denied them. Although many lesbians contributed greatly to bothseparatist and mixed lesbian and gay male journals, they were often alsoputting their energy into the women's movement. It can also be argued that itwas (and is) often easier to be 'out' as a gay man than as a lesbian. Againalthough the reasons are unciear, it seems to be the case that those journalswhich do best are not 'mixed' but appeal either to lesbians or to gay men.Two titles dominate lesbian and gay publishing in Britain today. The PinkPaper is a weekly newspaper which provides detailed and generallysupportive coverage to the campaigns of activists while also catering to thosemore interested in the scene. It's pages also reflect the growth in the "pinkpound", with advertisements for gay and lesbian financial advisers andsolicitors along with numerous job vacancies. The Gay Times has similarcontent but as a monthly has less immediate news and more features. Aparticular strength is its extensive review section including books, music, theatre, television and film and its encyclopaedic listings of pubs, clubs andgroups throughout Britain. These journals have survived by appealing to anumber of different groups of lesbians and gay men and reflect the demand forstylish, professionally presented (and therefore well financed) products.

The only Scottish journal currently being published, other than the scene freesheets, is Gay Scolland. This journal has suffered, as have all the others,

26

from the effects of the recession, from the decline in membership of theScottish Homosexual Rights Group (now Outright Scotland) and from therelative inactivity of the Scottish lesbian and gay movement. The future healthof Gay Scotland depends as much upon the health of the lesbian and gaymovement as it does on the skills and determination of those involved with itsproduction.

Many publications for gay men and lesbians continue to have relatively shortlife spans. Bona, from the same stable as the highly successful Pink Paper, closed in 1994 after only a few issues and, in the same year, Phase closedafter only seven months of publication amid great acrimony. The job ofproducing a definitive list of lesbian and gay journals, let alone a definitivecollection, is a daunting and constantly changing one.

[11 The "Wolfenden Report" (i.e. The Report of the Committee on Homosexual Offences

and Prostitution, 1957) recommended partial decriminalisation of male homosexual

activity. For an analysis of the impact of the Wolfenden Report on lesbians and gay

men in Britain see J. Weeks, Gorning Oyt Pluto Press, london 1977

(2) The Politics Dept. of Edinburgh University would not publish this paper unless the

very titles of the paedophile journals were removed. These journals are included in

this edition.

APPENDIX TWO' Other Sexual Minority Journals

The question of the validity of connections between the lesbian and gaymovement and other sexual minority groups continues to becontroversial. The journals listed below include work by lesbians andgay men and are representative of groups which have had, and continueto have, an impact on the lesbian and gay movement such as it is.

Bisexuality

NLS holds #1 to #21 of Bimonthly (Per.3109/D), dating from Jan 1984to Feb/March 1989. This journal was mainly the work of the LondonBisexual Group and includes a wide range of material. A recurringtheme is what relationship, if any, bisexual groups should seek with thelesbian and gay movement.

Paedophilia

The library has two paedophile titles. They are Magpie (Phi), #1 to #17(1977 to 82), and Understanding Paedophilia (Phi), #1 to #4 (1976 to77). Both these titles were associated with the Paedophile InformationExchange (PIE) and include news of PIE campaigns and business alongwith "learned" articles on legal and medical approaches to paedophilia.Mostly, though not exclusively, pederast.

The Tartan Skirt (HP.sm.567), Sept 1984 to March 1990, reflects theclose relationship between the Scottish TVITS Group and EdinburghGay Switchboard. The journal includes TVITS Group news, letters andfeature articles on TVs in history etc.. The Glad Rag (HJ9.282), #1 to#60 (1982 to '92), was published in London and includes bothinternational and national news, listings and feature articles. Neither ofthese journals is exclusively, or even largely, for gay TVITSs.

28

APPENDIX THREE Lesbian and/or gay jQurnals nQt fQund in NLS

In the past twenty years or so there may have been as many as 300lesbian and/Qr gay journals published. Many of these were short livedand of limited circulatiQn. A few Qf the tilles listed belQw have beentaken from publicatiQns such as Jeffrey Weeks' CQming Out Qr fromadvertisements in Qther journals but most have been taken from the HallCarpenter or Outright Archives.

The title is followed by the place of pUblication and the decade the journal was firstpublished where this is known. "Outlet" & "Stonewall News" should be received byNLS during 1995.
