SEPTEMBER 09, 2009

LSUS Men’s Basketball completed their 2008 – 2009 season with their 5th consecutive trip to the NAIA National

Tournament and won their 4th consecutive GCAC Tournament Championship. The Pilots have won 20 plus games each

of their seasons since reinstating the program in 2003 and have set the standard extremely high for future Pilots. To

maintain the status of “Louisiana’s most winning college basketball program over the past 6 years,” the Pilots will have to

fill the void of losing 5 players off last year’s team. LSUS Pilots leading scorers Chris Gatlin (16.5) and teammate Tyrone

Hamilton (15.9) recently signed professional contracts to play basketball in Germany.

Replacing over 80% of their offensive scoring was one challenge for Head Coach Chad McDowell this off-season that

didn’t seem to bother him much. “We return a 3 year starter in point guard Jared Stevenson, GCAC Freshman of the

Year Derrick Parker, Brandon Mims, and several other key members from last year’s team,” commented

McDowell. “Scoring was the least of our concerns in recruiting this year. We feel scoring will take care of itself. Now that

doesn’t mean we didn’t sign some guys that can really put the ball in the basket in bunches. It just simply means we were

looking for some things in this year’s recruiting class other than scoring. With all that being said, we couldn’t be more

excited about a group of young men than we are about this year’s recruiting class. Each of our new players understands

the expectations and they are eager to continue the winning tradition that has been established.”

The 2009 – 2010 recruiting class contains 11 new faces to the program which includes two high school players. The

remaining 9 players of the recruiting class come to the Pilots as transfers from other institutions. The recruiting class is as

follows:

course of his college career. David will be joining former Crimson Tide teammates in Derrick Parker and Greg Shyne.

Caleb Washington transferred to LSUS last spring and officially joins the roster this season. Washington played his high

minutes of action each game. His team was 13-1 at the break last season when family reasons brought him back to

game. Bazile is a former teammate of Derrick Parker for the Pilots. The two of them played together during the summers

of 2007 and 2008 on an AAU team based out of Houston, Texas.

Greg Shyne is another Minden High School native that decided to transfer to LSUS. He spent last season as a member

of the Navarro Junior College Bulldogs . Shyne is a 5’11 shooting guard who played his high school ball for the Crimson

Tide and Coach Alan Shaw. His senior year for Minden was a good one as he averaged 26 points per game and was

name Co-MVP of the district alongside teammate then and now Derrick Parker. Shyne was also named to the

Shreveport/Bossier All-Area Team and was a selection for All-State Honorable Mention. Shyne will have three years left

of eligibility with the Pilots and is sure to “wow” the crowd from time to time with his incredible athleticism.

Brance “Coco” Davenport is a 6’2 guard who transfers to LSUS from Bossier Parish Community College. Davenport is

from Abbeville, Louisiana, where he prepped for Abbeville High School and Coach Jeff Davis. Davenport was selected to

the All-District 1st team his senior season for Abbeville averaging over 20 points and 4 assists per game. Davenport has

spent the past two years leading the BPCC Cavaliers to two winning seasons by averaging 15.6 points per game. His

scoring average ranked 10th in the competitive Region 14 Conference and earned him a spot on the Region 14 All-

Conference Team. Davenport was equally as impressive on the boards as he was scoring by averaging 6.8 rebounds per

game. He is known for his incredible work ethic and will be a strong guard for the Pilots for the next two seasons.

Ernie Pickens is joining the Pilots after a two year period of working in his hometown of Cecilia, Louisiana. Pickens is a

6’3 guard who last played during the 2006 – 2007 season as a member of the NCAA Division 2 Colorado State University

prepped at Virgin Valley High School where he averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds a game his senior season. He was

also a standout in football earning various honors his senior year as a safety in 2004. Barnum will become eligible for

competition this spring and will have 4 seasons of eligibility.

from Huntington High School in 2004 and was a key member to some of the Raiders all time great teams. Washington

earned All-District honors his last 3 years in high school and was named to Shreveport/Bossier All City Team his senior

season. He played his first season collegiately for Southern Shreveport/Bossier and his second season at Arkansas

Baptist College. Washington joins the Pilots for his junior season and will be eligible to compete this spring.

Charles Mitchell transfers to LSUS from Northeast Mississippi Junior College and rounds out this year’s recruiting

class. Mitchell is a 6’5 wing from Marion, Louisiana. He was named to the All-District 1st Team in high school for his

Stevenson and Parker Named GCAC Preseason All-Conference

OCTOBER 27, 2009

Shreveport, LA – The 2009 – 2010 basketball season is less than a week away and the Men’s Basketball Team received

more good news today. Two weeks ago, the GCAC coaches predicted the LSUS Men’s Basketball Team would win

another conference championship. Today, the conference released the 2009-2010 Men’s Basketball Preseason All

Conference Team and the list included two of our very own. Returning starting point guard Jared Stevenson and 2008

GCAC Freshman of the Year Derrick Parker were selected to the ten-player team voted on by head coaches in the

conference.

Derrick Parker returns for his sophomore season and the Pilots have high expectations after his play during his freshman

campaign. Parker, a 6’7 post player, averaged 11.5 points, 7.62 rebounds and led the Pilots in shooting percentage at

64%. Parker is expected to be a key contributor in helping the Pilots win another GCAC Championship and make their

sixth consecutive trip to the NAIA National Tournament. Parker is from Minden, Louisiana, where he was a stand-out

player for Coach Alan Shaw and the Crimson Tide.

Jared Stevenson returns for the third straight year as the starting point guard for the Pilots. Stevenson, a 6’0 floor general

for Coach McDowell and the Pilots, transferred from Northwestern State University in 2007 and was immediately a

contributing factor for the Pilots. In his first season, he led the Pilots to a 34 – 3 overall record in capturing a GCAC

Regular Season and Tournament Championship. Stevenson has averaged 10 points and 5 assists a game over the last

two years and looks to put up even better numbers for the 2009 – 2010 season. Even more impressive than his

basketball statistics are his academic achievements here at LSUS. Stevenson was named to the Dean’s List four

consecutive semesters and graduated last spring with a Bachelors of Science in Accounting Degree. He finished his

undergraduate work with a cumulative 3.51 grade point average. Stevenson is working towards his MBA while playing for

the Pilots in his last year of eligibility.

Stevenson was recognized last year in Kansas City at the 2009 NAIA National Tournament for his accomplishments

academically, athletically, and for his community service. Each year, the NAIA selects only four student-athletes in the

nation to receive the Pattison Award (Champions of Character Player Award) and Stevenson was one of their choices for

the 2008 – 2009 season. The Pattison Family and NAIA say they are looking for young men who are making a difference

in their communities and are dedicated to the principle that character is a choice. They selected Jared Stevenson

because they realized he understands that being a champion is about reaching your potential and making good decisions

consistently in daily life.

The Pilots will open the season this Monday, November 2, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. Be sure to get your season passes now so

you can catch all the great action during the 2009 – 2010 season. Congratulations to Jared Stevenson and Derrick

Parker for being selected to the GCAC Preseason All-Conference Team.

blocking 5 Bulldog shots. Taylor Garrett was a perfect 1-1 from long range for his 3 points.

“Every win is a good win. There was no let down from our team tonight when had a commanding lead at the half, a lot of

teams would have relaxed and let the other team back in. That was not the case tonight as our guys did what they were

supposed to do. With a win like this, it certainly keeps our momentum going,” Coach McDowell said.

The next game for the Pilots will be on Monday November 23rd, at the Dock against East Texas Baptist University. The

tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

LSUS MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS SEVENTH STRAIGHT

NOVEMBER 23, 2009

Shreveport, LA-The LSUS Pilots (7-0) defeated the East Texas Baptist University Tigers (0-1) by a final score of 81-69 on

Monday night at the Dock.

LSUS got off to an early lead in the first half but the ETBU defense forced some turnovers and quickly built up a lead.

LSUS led by 5 with 11 minutes to play in the half which quickly evaporated when ETBU mounted a comeback and opened

up their lead to 10 points with 5 minutes to go.

The Pilots kept their composure and battled back as Jared Stevenson and Isiah Bazile were good from the paint. Mark

Jackson drew a foul from ETBU’s Josh Chamber and made both free-throws to cut the Tigers lead to 4 with 3:22 left to

play in the half.

John Anthony Anglin made a big three-pointer to bring the Pilots within one with 2:44 left. LSUS trailed at the break 39-36.

LSUS point-guard Jared Stevenson went down at the end of the first half with an injury that kept him sidelined for the rest

of the game.

For the second straight game the Pilots trailed at the break which would set the table for another comeback victory. “We

were faced with a lot of adversity at the half. Not only did we play poorly in the first half but we now have to play the

second half without our general, Jared Stevenson. Not to mention being without Caleb Washington the entire game due to

an injury that he sustained in our last game. We challenged our guys not to give up the offensive rebounds and to attack

the rim more,” said Head Coach Chad McDowell.

Derrick Parker opened up the second half with a shot from the paint that fell to bring the Pilots within one. With 18:00 to

play John Anthony Anglin nailed a three-pointer from the near corner to regain the lead 43-41. The Pilots would never trail

again.

LSUS opened the lead to 9 points after Anglin and Jake Greene both hit from the 3-pointers. Greg Shyne was the heart

beat of the offense tonight for the Pilots as he got a big bucket and the foul to give the Pilots a 13 point lead which he

made 14 after sinking the free-throw.

Shyne again converted on the three-point play after driving to the basket and drawing the foul just moments later to give

LSUS a 17 point advantage with 11 minutes to go in the game. Shyne would finish his run after converting on a pair of

free-throws on the next possession. The Pilots then led by 19 as Shyne had scored 8 straight points for the Pilots to build

the lead.

Late in the second half, Jay Lincoln came away with the ball and passed the length of the floor to Ernie Pickens who

completed the play with a slam dunk to give the Pilots a 15 point advantage.

The largest lead of the night for the Pilots was 19 after trailing by as much as 10 in the first half. The Pilots had four

players in double digits.

“This was a great team effort tonight. We found a way to win when the cards appeared to be stacked against us. Our poor

performance in the first half was overshadowed by good performance in the second half. And a great way to end it as

Jayce Barnum made our final bucket of the game,” said Coach McDowell.

Greg Shyne led the Pilots in scoring with 20 points which included 5-8 from the field and a perfect 10-10 from the charity

strip in only 19 minutes of action. “Greg played to his strength tonight; when he wants to go to the basket, not many

people can stop him. This was an impressive performance,” said Coach McDowell.

John Anthony Anglin was second in scoring for the game with 14 points. Anglin was 5-11 from the field and 4-9 from long

range in his 26 minutes of play. “JA made some great decisions tonight and shot the ball very well for us,” stated Coach

McDowell.

Derrick Parker continued his consistent play with his 6th double-double of the season. Parker finished the game with 12

points and 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of action. “You always know what kind of effort you are going to get with DP; just

another amazing performance tonight,” commented Coach McDowell.

Mark Jackson had 12 points going 5-10 from the field and 2-3 from the free-throw line. Jackson also had 3 assist and 5

rebounds in 24 minutes of play.

“I thought Jake Greene did a great job for us in the time he was in there. This kid is a great basketball player with one of

the sharpest minds. He is a joy to watch and coach,” said Coach McDowell. Greene played 8 minutes and finished the

game with 3 points going 1-4 from the 3-point line.

Isiah Bazile finished the game with 8 points (4-8 from the field), 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the absence of Stevenson.

“What a game for Isiah, he came in the game and played lights out. He stepped it up tonight after Jared went down, you

just can’t say enough about this kid,” Coach McDowell said.

“Jay Lincoln played a great game as well. He did not have any points tonight but he plays great team basketball. Some

players when they don’t score panic and do not help their team; this is not the case with Jay. He played great defense

tonight and helped us in a big way,” stated Coach McDowell. Lincoln saw 18 minutes of action where he had 5 rebounds

and 1 assist.

“Ernie Pickens helped us out tonight and played well while he was in there,” said Coach McDowell. Pickens had 4 points

going 2-2 from the field and had 1 assist.

The next game for the LSUS Pilots will be an exhibition game on Tuesday November 24th, on the road to Longview,

Texas, to face the LeTourneau Yellow jackets who are currently 1-1 on the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

LSUS MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEATS LETOURNEAU

NOVEMBER 24, 2009

Longview, TX-The LSUS Pilots remain perfect on the season as they defeated the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets

by a final score of 82-68 on Tuesday night at Solheim Arena in an exhibition contest. This is the 8th straight win of the

season for the Pilots but unfortunately will not count in the standings.

“Coming into the game we did not know what to expect. This was our first game without our two big key players, Jared

Stevenson and Caleb Washington (who have been sidelined with injuries). Each game this year that we have faced

adversity our guys have answered the call and tonight was no different,” said Head Coach Chad McDowell.

The Yellow Jackets led for most of the 1st half until the Pilots took the lead with for good with 3 minutes to go in the half.

LSUS never trailed in the opening period by more than 4 points and led at the break 44-38.

In the 1st half LSUS shot 44% from the field going 16-36, 25% from the 3-point line (3-12) and a perfect 9-9 from the free-

throw line.

“Jake Greene played awesome in the first half for us. We were struggling shooting the basketball and he made some big

3’s when we needed him to that kept us where we wanted to be,” stated Coach McDowell. Greene made all three buckets

from the 3-point line for the Pilots in the first half as his stock increases in just his first year as a Pilot.

The 2nd half would prove to be better for LSUS than the 1st. The Pilots dominated the Yellow Jackets shooting 52% from

the field (11-21), 2-3 from the 3-point line (66%) and 14-16 from the free-throw line (87%).

LSUS shot a total of 47% from the field, 33% from the 3-point line and an amazing 92% from the free-throw line.

Freshman Jake Greene became the 7th different leading scorer for the Pilots this season with a career high 15 points in

the win. Greene was 3-8 from the field, 3-6 from long range and a perfect 6-6 from the line after 21 minutes of action.

“Jake stepped up big tonight for us, we needed him tonight and he was there for us. You know when your teammates

chant your name after a game like his teammates tonight, you know you have done something special,” Coach McDowell

said.

Greg Shyne had another impressive performance tonight with his 12 points in 22 minutes of play. Shyne went 4-9 from

the field and was perfect from the free-throw line at 4-4. “Greg played hard again tonight as he always does; what a great

performance,” commented Coach McDowell.

Mark Jackson led the team in rebounds with 8, 2 offensive and 6 defensive and had 9 points in 24 minutes of action.

Jackson was 3-5 from the field and 3-4 from the free-throw line.

Isiah Bazile also came away with some boards as he had 7 rebounds for the Pilots. Bazile finished the game with 9 points

going 3-5 from the field and 3-4 from the charity strip. “What a great job by Bazile and Jackson tonight. Those two came a

long way for those rebounds and played hard all night,” said Coach McDowell.

LSUS opened up the lead by as much as 21 points with 3:30 to play in the game after trailing for most of the 1st half.

“This is a huge win for us. Every win is a good when especially when you win on the road. We struggled in the first half but

we managed to continue to play solid and we did what we had to do to win tonight,” Coach McDowell said.

The LSUS Pilot fans will have two different opportunities to see them next week at the Dock. The first game will be on

Tuesday night December 1st, against the Jarvis Christian College Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are currently 1-3 on

the season but will have played four more games before their meeting with LSUS. The Pilots are currently 7-0 and have

already beaten the Bulldogs this season; a 108-64 convincing win on November 18th.

The Pilots will also be in action next Saturday December 5th at 4 p.m. as they take on the Texas College Steers. The

Steers are 3-2 on the season and will have one contest before the matchup with LSUS. This will be the first meeting

between the two schools this season.

LSUS MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS EIGHTH STRAIGHT

DECEMBER 01, 2009

Shreveport, LA-The LSUS Pilots soared to victory on Tuesday night at the Dock with a big win over the Jarvis Christian

College Bulldogs by a final score of 110-87.

The Pilots welcomed back two starters who had been sidelined due to injuries, Jared Stevenson and Caleb Washington

who both saw limited action as they were not at 100%. But the Pilots had to play without Derrick Parker and Isiah Bazile.

The first half of play saw a led no bigger than 12 points as the Bulldogs fought to keep the game close.

Jake Greene led the Pilots with 15 points in the first half. Greene sunk three 3’s and was a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw

line but this would only be a fraction of what the freshman would accomplish.

Greg Shyne remained consistent contributing 12 points in the first half of play. Shyne was 4-4 from the field and 4-5 from

the free-throw line.

John Anthony Anglin finished the half with 9 points (3-6 from the field and 3-point line).

The Pilots led at the break 53-46 as the Bulldogs battled to keep the game within reach heading to the locker room.

The second half brought plenty of action and electrified the crowd. Between the long three’s of Jake Greene and the slam

dunks from Brandon Mims the crowd had a lot to cheer for.

Jake Greene continued to wow the crowd as he finished the game with 31 points, his career high. Greene was 7-14 from

the field, 7-11 from the three-point line and a perfect 10-10 from the free-throw line. “We see him shoot like that every

day. His teammates love him. He is a winner and a smart basketball player,” said Head Coach Chad McDowell.

Greene becomes the seventh player to lead the Pilots in scoring in a single game. The only player to have been the

leading scorer more than once is Derrick Parker.

Greg Shyne finished the game with 19 points which included and electrifying slam dunk to energize the crowd with 2:38 to

play. Shyne was 6-11 from the field and 7-9 from the free-throw line.

Brance Davenport finished the game with 13 points while Mark Jackson had 10.

Brandon Mims who had back to back exploding dunks late in the game finished with 8 points.

Despite the absence of Derrick Parker the Pilots still managed to win the battle on the boards as they out rebounded the

Bulldogs 55-36. It was a team effort as no player had double-digit rebounds. Caleb Washington had the most with 9 and

Davenport finished with 8. Two players had 7 rebounds (Mark Jackson and Ernie Pickens).

The next game for the LSUS Pilots will be on Saturday afternoon with a showdown with the Texas College Steers from

the Red River Athletic Conference. So far this season the Steers are 3 and 2. The tip-off is at 4 p.m at the Dock as the

Pilots look to make it 9 in a row.

Shreveport, LA-The LSUS Pilots (9-0) kept the unbeaten season alive after an 89-78 victory over the Texas College

Steers on Saturday afternoon at the Dock.

tough. The Pilots opened up a double-digit lead after an 8-0 run midway through the first half. Mark Jackson nailed a

couple of 3-point shots to lift the Pilots during the run.

Texas College would not accept the double digit lead by the Pilots and came roaring back to trim the lead to 1 with 7:35

The Pilots went on a 10-0 run to expand their lead to 33-22 with 5:41 remaining in the first half. Greg Shyne and Jake

Greene both hit from down town to open up the game. Texas College would close the gap only to be reopened by the

LSUS Falls to NSU, 83-73

DECEMBER 08, 2009

Natchitoches, LA- The LSUS Pilots (9-0) gave the Northwestern State University Demons (4-3) more than they bargained

for on Tuesday night at Prather Coliseum in what was an exhibition game for the Pilots but a regular season game for

NSU. The Pilots had an explosive first half and led by as much as 14 points in the first half.

The Pilots took the lead in the first half after Jared Stevenson nailed a three-pointer with 18:50 to go to give the Pilots a 4-

3 advantage but NSU would soon take the lead back. Greg Shyne soon followed suit with a three of his own with 16:15 to

play to regain the lead for the Pilots, 10-9.

NSU would remain in the lead until the Pilots’ Mark Jackson sank a couple of free-throws to give the LSUS the lead once

again with 9:36 to play in the contest. NSU took back the lead and the Pilots kept it close and tied it once again with 5:45

to go.

LSUS Men's Basketball considered one of the best teams in Louisiana getting

great review in state report

JANUARY 13, 2010

The LSU Shreveport men’s basketball team is mentioned in the Louisiana College Basketball Report at

neworleans.com.

LSU-Shreveport (13-1, 2-0 Gulf Coast Athletic)

MOST RECENT: Ran away from Loyola in the second half in taking a 91-65 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference home win

Saturday, winning their fourth straight and taking their second GCAC win over a state rival in as many games.

UPCOMING: Travel to face Belhaven in an early-season matchup of GCAC unbeatens Thursday in Jackson, Miss.,

before returning home to face William Carey Saturday.

SKINNY: Yes, the Pilots haven’t played the schedule that some other state teams have, and a couple of losses counted

as “exhibitions,” but it’s still hard to argue with 13-1. LSUS ranked fifth nationally in Monday’s NAIA Division I poll and

Minden’s Derrick Parker was honored as NAIA national Player of the Week this week – a first for the school. Parker has

11 double-doubles, had 31 points in last week’s win over Xavier and 23 rebounds against Loyola.

Mobile, AL- The #5 LSU Shreveport Pilots (15-2, 4-1) defeated the Spring Hill Badgers (9-5, 3-2) in an overtime thriller,

82-80, at the Arthur R. Outlaw Rec Center on Thursday night.

The Pilots controlled the opening tip and got a jumper from Derrick Parker and two buckets from Brance Davenport in the

LSUS' Parker, Stevenson named to GCAC All-Conference First Team

MARCH 05, 2010

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announced today the 2009-2010 Men's Basketball All Conference

Team, Coach, and Players of the Year. The Pilots had two members on this year’s team; Derrick Parker and Jared

Stevenson.

Derrick Parker, a sophomore from Minden, Louisiana, gives new wonder to the phrase “Sophomore Slump.” Parker did

not come close to a slump in his sophomore season which earned him Player of the Year in the Gulf Coast Athletic

Conference, a unanimous decision. During the 2009-2010 season, Parker was named the GCAC Player of the Week four

different times, the most of any player in the conference and was also named NAIA Player of the Week once.

Parker received his first POW award on Nov. 9th for his performances against Arlington Baptist College, Southwestern

Assemblies of God, and Texas Wesleyan University. In the three games he averaged 16 P/G and 10.7 R/G.

His second GCAC POW award also captured him the NAIA POW for his efforts against Xavier University and Loyola

University. Parker had 31 points and 11 rebounds versus Xavier followed by an 18 point and 23 boards against Loyola.

He averaged 24.5 P/G and 17 R/G between the two contests.

Parker received the GCAC POW on Jan. 25th after he averaging 24 P/G and 10 R/G in two games versus Spring Hill

College and the University of Mobile. He was named the GCAC POW for the 4th time on March 1st after two great

performances versus Dillard University and SUNO where he averaged 20.5 P/G and 10.5 R/G.

In addition to leading the Pilots in rebounding, Parker led all other GCAC players in rebounding as he finished the

conference schedule with 198 (11 R/G). Next year should be another great season for Derrick Parker as he leads the

Pilots to the Red River Athletic Conference.

Jared Stevenson, a senior from Quitman, Louisiana, was also named to the All GCAC Team after leading the conference

in assists for the season with 131 and was 4th on the leader board in conference games with 73 assists.

Stevenson started in all 18 conference games for the Pilots as he led the team in free-throw percentage making 54 out of

68 (79%).

Stevenson’s numbers may not be as flashy, but the numbers do not prove the type of player he is. Team player says it all

for Stevenson as he always looks for a teammate who has a better shot than he does when he brings the ball down the

floor for the Pilots.
