Week  7:  Introduc/on  to  eBooks  part  1-‐  paula  roush  Epub  for  ipads  (and  other  eReaders)  InDesign  CS5.5:  ePub  workflow  for  eBooks

•  What  are  eBooks?  •  Ar/sts’  ebooks,  two  examples  •  From  inDesign  into  ebook  market  •  Is  my  photobook  ready  to  be  an  ebook?  •  Essen/al  applica/ons  •  From  Blurb  to  Epub    (an  example)

What  are  eBooks?

•   eBooks  are  electronic,  downloadable  books  that  can  "easily"  be  accessed  on  a  wide  range  of  e-‐readers,  like  the  iPad  or  iphone,  and  your  home  computer.

•  (technical  defini/on)

market

•  ePUBs  or  e-‐books  is  a  growing  market  •  it  is  predicted  that  this  market  by  the  end  of  2015,  will  reach  $2.8  billion

•  (economic  argument…if  you  need  one)

Ar/sts’  ebooks,  two  examples

Ebooks

•  common  file  formats    •  1-‐pdf  •  2-‐epub  •  3-‐mobi

EPUB

•  eBook  format  •  use  the  .epub  extension  •  supported  by  most  eReader  devices  (excep/on:  the  Amazon  Kindle  that  uses  .mobi)

From  inDesign  into  Ebook  market>

•  >Epub  (forma\ed  for  ipad)  – Blurb  market

–  if  you  use  their  trademark  sofware

– Do  It  Yourself  (Indie  publishing)  –  (your  own  site,  via  paypal)

•  >Mobi  (forma\ed  for  kindle)  –  Amazon  market

Blurb  ebook  tools:  my  advice  is  “avoid  them!”    if  you  have  to  reformat  your  book  for  ipad,  you  might  as  well  have  total  control  over  the  InDesign  document  instead  of  using  blurb  proprietary  sofware

Is  my  photobook  ready  to  be  an  eBook?

•  eBooks  are    different  from  their  print  counterparts,  par/cularly  formamng.

•  eBook  technology  is  s/ll  evolving  and  each  device  and  planorm  displays  eBooks  differently.

•  KEEP  FORMATTING  SIMPLE.

ISSUE  1-‐Page-‐Based  Formamng

•   EPUBs  are  made  up  of  reflowable  text  that  adjusts  based  on  the  screen  or  device  the  reader  is  using.  Unlike  their  print  counterparts,  eBooks  do  not  use  page-‐based  formamng.

•  Page  numbers,  page  breaks,  headers,  and  footers  do  not  exist  in  eBooks

ISSUE  2-‐Fonts

•   Not  all  devices  can  display  all  fonts  the  same  way.  S/ck  with  one  of  the  standard  fonts  (Times  New  Roman,  Arial,  or  Garamond)  to  ensure  that  your  text  is  conveyed  clearly  across  formats,  devices  and  applica/ons.

•  If  you  use  another  font,  your  eBook's  text  will  automa/cally  be  converted  to  Times  New  Roman.

Essen/al  applica/ons

•  Adobe  digital  edi/ons  •  Sigil  •  Calibre  •  Amazon  kindle  apps

From  Blurb  to  Epub    (my  experience)

•  Blurb  is  just  star/ng  with  Ebooks  –  There  is  only  a  way  to  sell  your  ebooks  –  If  you  design  them  with  their  sofware

•  (Bookify  or  Booksmart)  •  You  are  limited  to  their  Epub  version  of  your  book

•  Best  op/on:  Do  It  Yourself  – Use  InDesign  to  reformat  your  blurb  book

•  Use  the  ipad  size  as  your  average  ereader  intent  •  Resize  your  photographs  •  Export  as  Epub

My  book  as  designed  for  print:  portrait  format  exploring  the  double  spread  landscape    layout

My  book  as  designed  for  ipad:  portrait  format  exploring  the  single  spread  portrait    layout

InDesign/File/New/Document

•  CHANGES  for  ipad:  –  INTENT:  WEB  (instead  of  Print)  – Un/ck  ‘facing  pages’  – Page  size:  768px  X  1024px  – Orienta/on:  Portrait  – Margins:  Top-‐84  Lef-‐84  Bo\om-‐140  Right-‐84  •  (these  are  just  guides  for  a  screen  estate  of  800x600  to  account  for  perceptual  changes  in  direc/on  of  ereader  and  zoom  in  effect;  you  can  s/ll  do  full  bleed  like  I  did)

Indesign  document-‐single  pages,  ipad  size

Resizing  in  photoshop  with  crop  tool  set  up  to  768x1024  at  132  ppi

Use  crop  tool  to  resize  photos

Before:  inDesign  for  blurb/print

Adding  Metadata:  File  menu  /File  info

I  also  created  a  table  of  contents  (toc)  for  ereader  naviga/on.    I  used  paragraph  styles  but  you  can  do  without  it  this  /me

Adding  Your  Cover

•  Add  a  cover  image  for  the  bookshelf  icon  •  Pick  one  of  the  photos  from  your  book  and  resize  it  as  in  the  previous  step.

•  Name  it  cover.jpg,  and  save  it  to  the  images  folder  (as  above)

•  During  Epub  export  you’ll  be  asked  to  supply  it

my  cover  (no  visible  /tle  as  per  camouflage  theme  lol)  photo  resized  to768x1024  at  132  ppi

Transfer  ebooks  to  iphone/ipad  In  iTunes  File>Add  to  Library…

Opening  the  Photo  Book  on  an  iPad

•  Locate  the  photo-‐book.epub  file  •  Open  iTunes  •  Drag  and  drop  the  photo-‐book.epub  file  on  to  iTunes.

•  In  iTunes,  you  should  now  see  your  book  in  the  “Books”  area.

•  Connect  your  iPad  and  sync  with  iTunes.  •  On  your  iPad,  open  iBooks.  •  Open  your  book.
