Nobody is paying him any regard.

He continues to drift in the

betting and even his trainer says

he’s more a Melbourne Cup (Gr

1, 3200m) horse.

However, to quote the late and great Fred

Dagg (John Clarke) you would be a “fool to

yourself and a burden to others” if you didn’t have

a couple of dollars on the grossly underestimated

Dashing Willoughby (Nathaniel) in today’s

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m).

The Andrew Balding-trained gelding is

the best value runner in the race, albeit one in

which prognostications may be complicated

by the forecast of up to 10 millimetres of rain

today.

Save for the possibility that the 2019

(Epsom) Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo) may be simply

superior - a prospect diminished by the anticipated rain if indeed it’s a

deluge - it looks a wide-open Caulfield Cup which may mimic last year

when just a length and three quarters separated the first six to finish.

Nonetheless, racing is all about having an opinion and Dashing

Willoughby is the horse over the odds, trading at as much as $30 on the

eve of the race. Toffee Tongue (Tavistock), Warning (Declaration Of War)

and Chapada (Bullet Train) look the other value runners albeit with Verry

Elleegant (Zed) a justifiable favourite if it’s wet.

Dashing Willoughby is not without early speed and can take advantage

of barrier one. An in-form Michael Walker (who opted for this horse

ahead of Prince Of Arran on whom he’s had great success) rides and there

is no jockey with a better record of taking advantage of inside barriers -

riding for luck and finding it when necessary - in major races. Plus there’s

enough evidence to say he’ll handle Australian soft ground.

But the key is that his form is simply great in three runs this year

after being gelded. He led throughout first-up in the Buckhounds Stakes

(Listed, 1m 4f) at this distance. Second and third have not raced since;

fourth was Trueshan (Planteur), who’s since won twice and had little luck

in the Ebor.

He then won the Henry II Stakes at Sandown beating Spanish Mission

(Noble Mission) who, interestingly, thereafter joined Balding’s team and

has since won twice. Note that

Spanish Mission and Trueshan

are among those taking on

Stradivarius (Sea The Stars) in

tonight’s Qipco Champions Long

Distance Cup (Gr 2, 2m) at Ascot.

Then on the worst (inside)

part of the track he was a

more than sound fourth in

the Lonsdale Cup (Gr 2, 2m)

at York, finishing just behind

Nayef Road (Galileo) who’d

previously, on his preferred good ground, run Stradivarius to a length

so the form ties in with Anthony Van Dyck. Dashing Willoughby

profiles very similarly to Trip To Paris (Champs Elysees) who stretched

Mongolian Khan (Holy Roman Emperor) in 2015.

While Balding told Racenet his stayer’s main aim is the Melbourne

Cup, he did note that “Dashing Willoughby’s European form would

be quite a bit stronger than Duretto’s so I’d hope he could be very

competitive.” Balding’s Duretto (Manduro) ran fourth to Best Solution

(Kodiac) in the 2018 Caulfield Cup. The Kingsclere trainer, interestingly,

also originally prepared Cup entrants Master Of Wine (Maxios) and Le

Don De Vie (Leroidesanimaux).

It is more likely than not that at least

one of the visitors will feature in the finish. We’ve had five northern

hemisphere-trained winners since All The Good (Diesis) rejuvenated

international interest in the race with his win in 2008. In the past eight

years there’s been no fewer than 11 northern hemisphere newcomers

(either trained there or here) finish top three and they’ve provided two of

the top three on three occasions in the past four years.

The key local form constant in that time has been the Turnbull Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) and, in terms of winners, that’s been the four-year-old

mares running well in the Flemington race and dropping significantly in

weight for the Cup. That plainly makes the case for Toffee Tongue while

Warning arguably turned in the best performance in the Turnbull.

Perhaps Toffee Tongue was a touch flattered by a rails run in the

Turnbull but I’d say it was the run you had to see to suggest she’d peak

for this as you would expect a four-year-old mare (with classic form last

season) to do.

Trainer Chris Waller concurred on Radio RSN: “She’s done what you’d

hope she’d have done. We know she gets the distance, she’s been set for

the race and she’s reasonably weighted.”

I have absolutely no knock on the Turnbull winner Verry Elleegant who

would relish soft ground but she will start favourite and continue to shorten.

Good luck to you if you backed her early. She is a last-start winner unbeaten

at the distance and boasts four wins and two seconds - both behind Addeybb

(Pivotal) - on rain affected ground at 2000 metres and beyond.

Addeyyb’s form is arguably superior to any of the visitors here. He runs

tonight in the Qipco Champions Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 2f). While no mare older

than four has won since Mannerism (Amyntor) in 1992; no high class

older mare has competed since Makybe Diva (Desert King) was beaten a

nose by Elvstroem (Danehill) in 2004.

“She’s met very good horses over the past six months and produced

her best form in terms of consistency. Her form has been franked by

Addeybb and she’s unbeaten at 2400 metres, winning the Oaks and the

Tancred convincingly,” said Waller, who is also represented by Finche

(Frankel), fifth last year and sound in The Turnbull.

About once in every ten years - on average - the Herbert Power (Gr 2,

2400m) throws up a good odds winner of the Caulfield Cup and this year’s

obvious candidate is Chapada, who is one of just four last start winners in

the race (assuming Le Don De Vie doesn’t get a run).

Trainer Mike Moroney told ANZ Bloodstock News his only reservation

would be the forecast rain: “He’s going well and I think he’s the only horse

who’s beaten the handicapper,

apart from Anthony Van Dyck

who should probably have 62

(kilograms), but ideally we’d

want good ground.

“The internationals look

a strong group but often you

never know, until after the

race, which ones have travelled

and which ones haven’t.

They’re training on a different surface

here and some will adjust and some will go sore. You just don’t know,” said

the Melbourne Cup winning trainer, who added that he expected Tofane

(Ocean Park) to run “extremely well” in The Everest (1200m) in Sydney.

The visitors and the return of last year’s placegetters certainly make

this an intriguing Caulfield Cup from top to bottom. Only a mug would

risk Aidan O’Brien’s Anthony Van Dyck and son Joseph’s Buckhurst

(Australia) but I’ll happily wear that tag as I believe both are over-bet.

O’Brien senior’s travelling man T J Comerford says the Derby winner

will handle “our” soft ground but the only glitches on his form card are on

rain-affected tracks so it has to be a concern.

Obviously he’s a very good horse but the weight and wide draw are

also risk factors. And it might be that his form is just a touch overhyped.

The Derby win on his CV has seduced most commentators but how much

relevance does that have 17 months later?

His second in the Coronation Cup (Gr 1, 1m 4f) is solid enough but he

was second, he didn’t beat Ghaiyyath (Dubawi). A generally out of form

bunch straggled in behind - bar Stradivarius, of course, whom he then

beat in the Prix Foy (Gr 2, 2400m) but Stradivarius is a 4000 metres, not

2400 metres, performer.

There’s every chance young Joseph and Mr Williams will be too

clever for all us, as they were with Rekindling (High Chaparral) in the

2017 Melbourne Cup, but the reality is that Buckhurst has not won at the

distance; arguably, he has too much weight on Irish Group 3 form and his

three wins of note are all 2000 metres right-handed at The Curragh.

Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War) and Mirage Dancer (Frankel)

return after running second and third respectively in 2019 but not since

Columnist, in 1947, has a previous year’s placegetter won the Caulfield Cup.

The argument for Vow And Declare is that he looks the type of horse

who could emulate Dunaden (Nicobar) and Viewed (Scenic) by winning

the year after a Melbourne Cup victory. I’d like to have seen more from him

in the Turnbull but that was an odd race and Descarado (High Chaparral)

did win this, albeit on a heavy track, off a 14th in the Turnbull.

Mirage Dancer was sound enough in The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m)

where, despite a very minor baulk in the straight, he had a charmed run.

The Metropolian form had a brief honeymoon with Railings (Zabeel)

in 2005 and Tawqeet (Kingmambo) in 2006 but since then not one

Metropolitan winner has been placed next start, including four who

tackled this race.

The evergreen Prince Of Arran (Shirocco), True Self (Oscar) and

emergencies San Huberto (Speightstown) and Le Don De Vie complete the

international line-up. The Charlie Fellowes-trained Prince Of Arran has the

excellent Australian form of two wins and four placings from six starts. He

comes through the same lead-up race as last year and while beaten further

this time around, he ran virtually the same time. Just think the Melbourne

Cup is more his race. Likewise, True Self.

For three decades from 1978, the Nine

and genuine dominance in the

Australian broadcast market, especially after the

emergence of cable television in the mid 1990s.

Their ads,

backed by the Orleans song of the same

espousing the value of the network (including

a memorable cameo from John Tapp in

their bicentennial ad in 1988, calling sports

commentators like Richie Benaud and Ian

Max Walker-piloted, Alan Bond-owned

The ads continued even for a short period

after they had ceded ground to the Seven

evoking memories of the channel at its best

even when it had lost some of that lustre.

Perhaps the same can be said of Nature

or even if he does but finds circumstances

against him, there are a host of horses who

could join Redzel (Snitzel) and Yes Yes Yes

(Rubick) as an Everest winner.

Gytrash (Lope De Vega) flies fresh and

has been intentionally prepared with that in

mind. He has only raced once this spring,

producing a mammoth effort to defeat Nature

Strip comfortably in the Concorde Stakes.

His fellow South Australian Behemoth

(All Too Hard) has always looked like a Group

1 winner in the making and he has finally put

it all together this spring, winning the Spring

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), the Memsie Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m) and the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) impressively.

The form from the Memsie, in particular,

looks solid with a subsequent Toorak

Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner in Mr

Quickie (Shamus Award), a Bill Stutt Stakes

(Gr 2, 1600m) victor in Glenfiddich (Fastnet

Rock) and a Stocks Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m)

heroine in Mystic Journey (Needs Further) in

Nature Strip backers will likely know their

fate at the start. The six-year-old can’t afford

to be slow to muster once again, particularly

from gate five with the race likely to develop

around him if he is tardy.

With $15 million on the line, expect

McDonald to be aggressive from the gates,

using the horse’s natural speed to ensure he

doesn’t have to work hard to get into that

front-running role.

The query then is what happens with

Eduardo (Host), another horse with natural

speed although one who probably isn’t as

quick as Nature Strip.

Rachel King will have one of the toughest

roles of any rider in the race: ensuring

Eduardo doesn’t jeopardise his own chances

by getting into a speed duel with Nature

Strip, but also making sure the Joe Pride-

trained chestnut doesn’t gift the race to the

champion sprinter by allowing him to dictate

on his own terms.

If the real Nature Strip doesn’t turn up,

preparation, although when putting all the

puzzle pieces together, it may not have been

as bad as it seems.

Beaten first-up in the Concorde Stakes

(Gr 3, 1000m)? He didn’t win at either of his

first-up runs during his Horse of the Year

season. No problem.

Throwing rider James McDonald at

the jump in a barrier trial? Clearly a freak

accident. It was something he’d never looked

like doing before and he may never do it

again either.

Beaten again and disappointing in the

Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)? McDonald

seemed to be cautious aboard the speedster

at the start and, perhaps due to that caution,

he was slightly slow to muster. That forced

him to do plenty of work before then being

able to cross Standout (Exceed And Excel),

with that effort showing late.

In a spring where so much has gone wrong,

though, all that is needed is for something to

go right for Nature Strip to figure.

expect her to outperform her odds.

As for Dollar For Dollar, this does appear

too rich but he’s another who is flying.

A top-five finish would be a tremendous

result.

And so, after months of speculation

about who would line up in the feature,

after weeks of wheeling and dealing, the

quick ascent to the Everest summit takes

place at 4:15pm today

Seventy seconds. $15 million. One winner.

in two starts this spring and looks to have

more to come. She’s the one to keep safe,

sporting the Yulong colours.

Haut Brion Her (Zoustar) and Dollar

For Dollar (High Chaparral) were only

confirmed at the last minute.

Haut Brion Her should be able to bounce

back after a severe regression second-up,

which followed a very tough win in the

Sheraco Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m). Whether

she can win is another matter entirely, but

behind, while his effort to carry 60 kilograms

in victory in the Sir Rupert Clarke cannot be

understated.

He’s the dark horse of the race and

perhaps the one best suited to being able to

upset Nature Strip.

Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt)

has been described by Les Bridge as “the

best horse I’ve trained” - even better than

the mighty Luskin Star (Kaoru Star) - and

will jump as favourite after his big victory in

The Shorts (Gr 2, 1100m) before his second

last time out.

Libertini was in a unique position last

time out as she needed to win the Premiere

Stakes to put her case forward for a slot,

whereas Classique Legend and Nature Strip

were not under the same pressure.

Nevertheless, it was a tremendous

win and she must be respected, because a

repeat performance will see her right in the

mix.

Godolphin pair Bivouac (Exceed And

Excel) and Trekking (Street Cry) are flying

under the radar to some degree, but both

produced strong first-up performances

and they both have form on the board.

If anything, there is a slight leaning to

Bivouac, but it is far more competitive than

the two-horse race touted by his rider Glen

Boss.

Veteran Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega)

lines up in his third straight Everest, having

finished sixth in 2018 before rattling home for

second last year. Expect him to be flashing

home again but it is hard to see him scoring.

Tofane (Ocean Park) has had no luck

Tough task at weights for Cup winnerDanny O’Brien is confident last year’s

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Vow

And Declare (Declaration Of War) can go

close in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)

today despite a challenging weight. The

gelding finished second behind Mer De Glace

(Rulership) when carrying 52.5 kilograms in

the Caulfield feature last year and will need

to handle 57 kilograms 12 months later. "He's

going very well. He's a winning chance but

it's a big task with that weight. He needs to be

four to five lengths better than last year," said

O'Brien, who is not concerned with Vow And

Declare’s last appearance a fortnight ago,

where he finished 12th in the Turnbull Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m). "He was fine. He was crowded

late. He's ready for 2400 metres and he always

runs well over a trip," he said. O'Brien is

aiming for his second Caulfield Cup win after

success with Master O'Reilly (O’Reilly) in

2007, while four-time winner Damien Oliver

will join record holder Scobie Breasley on five

wins if he is successful today.

All roads lead to Flemington for WarningLast year’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)

winner Warning (Declaration Of War) has

his sights firmly set on the Melbourne Cup

next month and will be ridden with that in

mind in the Caulfield Cup today, according

to Sam Freedman. Warning will likely start

from barrier 16 and Freedman thinks it will

be tough to win from there. "I think the horse

is going very well, but that [the barrier] makes

the task a little bit more difficult," Freedman,

who trains in partnership with his father

Anthony, told Racing.com. "I'm not sure if

Caulfield is his perfect track, he is more of

a Flemington horse. It's a really nice run

heading towards the Melbourne Cup. We

will probably ride him quietly. He has got

the speed over this trip that he sort of can

settle closer, but with his grand final being

the Melbourne Cup, the last thing we want to

do is give him a real gut-buster and then have

a horse that takes a little while to get over it.

Obviously if he can go on and win the race,

we will be trying to win it, but ultimately his

main target is the Melbourne Cup."

Southern stars align for DalasanLeon Macdonald will be hoping Dalasan

(Dalakhani) can follow in the footsteps of

his 2011 Caulfield Cup winner Southern

Speed (Southern Image) today, with the

four-year-old mirroring her preparation.

Both horses finished fourth in the Turnbull

Stakes in the final run prior to the Caulfield

Cup and Dalasan will carry 52.5 kilograms

today, the same as Southern Speed carried

to victory. Macdonald is confident Dalasan

can run well under an in-form jockey. "He's

drawn a bit awkwardly in 14 but he's got

Willie Pike on and he couldn't be riding any

better, plus he's only got a light weight,"

Macdonald said. Dalasan finished second

in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)

in May and Macdonald views that run as a

good form reference for the Caulfield Cup.

"He was beaten by a smart horse in Russian

Camelot and the third horse was the Victoria

Derby winner Warning in the strongest South

Australian Derby for years," MacDonald said.

"This is the race he's set for and he has the

weight to be a winning chance."

Bowman: Van Dyck an indication of Australia’s allureHugh Bowman will bid to win his first

Caulfield Cup today on 2019 Epsom Derby (Gr

1, 1m 4f ) winner Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo),

with the jockey partnering him for the first

time yesterday. Bowman believes the arrival

of the Caulfield Cup topweight, who is trained

by Aidan O’Brien in Ireland, is significant for

Australian racing. "It's great to see a horse

with the credentials that this horse brings

to Australia," Bowman told Racing.com.

"It's rare to see the very top-class European

middle-distance stayers come over here for

our signature races and the fact that Aidan

O'Brien and the Ballydoyle operation have

decided to bring such a high-class horse over

here, I think just shows how well our racing

industry is going on the world stage. I am sure

if this horse can at the very least run well and

show that they can come and do it over here,

we might see some more come because the

prize-money here is just extraordinary and I

think it's just a great advertisement for just

how healthy racing is here in Australia.”Dalasan SPORTPIX

Cummings: Don’t forget AviliusJames Cummings believes multiple Group

1 winner Avilius (Pivotal) can produce a big

performance in the Caulfield Cup today. The

seven-year-old’s last victory came in the 2019

George Main Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), but his

runner-up performance in the Hill Stakes (Gr

2, 2000m) a fortnight ago has given his trainer

confidence. “He’s sailing along beautifully

and he’s highly likely to produce the best

run of his campaign,” Cummings said. “We

suspect he’s coming from an excellent form

race in the Hill Stakes. The sight of Avilius

storming home in the Caulfield Cup would

bring great pride to the stable. He has been

a top-class multiple Group 1 winner, but that

has now pushed him close to the top of the

weight scale in this handicap. He has earned

a berth to tackle these stayers in Australia’s

premier mile and a half handicap.”

The Chosen One to improve on last yearThe Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-

trained The Chosen One (Savabeel) will be

attempting to capitalise on sneaking into the

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) for the second

year in a row, aiming to go better than his

ninth last year after drawing barrier 18. Set

to jump from barrier two this time around,

he is coming off an average seventh last week

in the Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) at

the course and distance. “The inside draw

means he doesn’t have to get so far back and

he doesn’t have to try and come around the

field, which when you have 17 other horses

of that calibre is pretty tough,” Forsman said.

“The plan will be to be as handy as possible

without over-doing it and hopefully he gets a

bit of luck in the run. Last start, in particular,

was just a nothing run. He was three wide with

no cover in a muddling run race. You have to

forgive him that. He didn’t throw it away, he

kept whacking away. The start before was a

little bit disappointing but it was at weight-

for-age. Back to a handicap, with blinkers

on, I think he is a horse that appreciates

Flemington as opposed to Caulfield, but the

key is a good draw. If he gets a bit of luck then

there is no reason he can’t be competitive.”

Rain to assist Australian Bloodstock pairAny rain falling in Melbourne ahead of today’s

Caulfield Cup will be beneficial to the Kris

Lees-trained outsiders Mustajeer (Medicean)

and Raheen House (Sea The Stars), with the

pair $101 and $251 chances respectively as

of last night. "I think (Mustajeer) is going the

right way. It's going to be hard for him, but I

think he is going the right way," Lees’ travelling

foreman Cameren Swan told Racing.com. "He

will probably go back (from barrier 15 with Billy

Egan on board). He doesn't want a firm track

at all and the prospect of rain is good. He is a

good-enough horse to be competitive on his

day. I really think he will run the best race of

his preparation, he looks great and feels great.

I think Raheen House wants it a little bit further

in this grade. The prospect of rain is really

going to enhance his chances. For him to be

competitive, the track will have to be pretty wet

by his race."

Alfa Oro ready for stakes tiltAlfa Oro (Bachelor Duke) is well-fancied to

land his first stakes win at the first attempt

when lining up in the Caulfield Sprint (Gr

2, 1000m) on Saturday. The Matt Laurie-

trained gelding won a Benchmark 84 contest

at Moonee Valley first-up last month, earning

him a fifth consecutive victory. "He's a horse

that we've always expected to get to the elite

level, but we've just managed him properly and

taken him through his grades," regular rider

Ben Melham told Racing.com. "You can only

win and that's what he has done. He has picked

up good prize-money for the owners along the

way and I've got no doubt he'll reach the top

end. Down in the weights on the minimum

looked too enticing … the horse is really in good

form so I'd expect him to be hard to beat on

Saturday."

Chibnall seeks career highlight Rainbiel (Toronado) will be aiming to complete

a hat-trick of wins in the three-year-old Fillies’

Plate (1400m) at Caulfield today, following an

impressive two and three-quarter length win

in a Benchmark 64 at Kyneton on her last start.

"She's got to step up because it's obviously

harder, and it's her first time up to 1400 metres.

If she can handle those two little hurdles, I

think she'll be very, very competitive," Anthony

Chibnall told Racing.com. Rainbiel heads the

market for the event and jumps from barrier

eight under Dean Holland. If she wins, it will be

the highlight of Chibnall’s career so far. "I don't

give Dean any instructions, I just say ride her

as the barriers open," Chibnall said. "She's got

enough barrier speed to put herself wherever

Dean wants to put her. I've galloped her on the

track at Kilmore and she can do things I haven't

had a horse do.”

Bossy excited by BivouacGlen Boss is raring to ride Bivouac (Exceed

And Excel) in The Everest (1200m) today

and believes his mount has a huge chance of

success. "He has got an undeniable chance,"

Boss told Racing.com. "This colt is flying. He is

a happy horse. Speaking to James [Cummings],

he can't wait for the weekend, so I'm looking

forward to it. When I rode him in the autumn,

I said to James and the lads at Godolphin that

he would really furnish and make a beautiful

spring colt. And he's fully furnished now. He

looks a real colt and is really athletic. His first-up

run was awesome and you see with his profile

he springs off that first-up run, his next one is

huge.” Despite not heading the Everest betting

market, Boss is confident Bivouac can outrun

his odds. "My bloke has beat them [the Everest

contenders] all before. They're coming from

different angles … Nature Strip (Nicconi) when

he is on, he is nearly unbeatable, Classique

Legend (Not A Single Doubt) is the new kid on

the block in a way, then you've got a couple of

emerging (sprinters). I'm pretty confident with

where I am. I know where my horse sits in the

pecking order and it's pretty high."

Adelaide raid on Sydney richesSouth Australian trainers Gordon Richards and

David Jolly are confident their respective horses

can go close in the $15 million The Everest

today. Richards trains Black Caviar Lightning

(Gr 1, 1000m) winner Gytrash (Lope De Vega),

who arrives at Randwick in perfect shape.

“Everything is great with Gytrash, I couldn’t be

happier,” Richards told Racing.com. “Some may

question whether I have done enough with him

because it is six weeks between runs. But he is

such a clean-winded horse and he is so good

fresh I have no issue with him. His jockey [Jason

Collett] is in good form and if we are beaten

on Saturday it will simply be he wasn’t good

enough.” Jolly is equally as confident about

last month’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m) winner Behemoth (All Too Hard), who

is aiming for his fourth-consecutive success.

“He’s done extremely well at Brad’s (Widdup),”

said Jolly. “I think the travelling he has done

in the past year has really seasoned him and

he has not turned a hair. I’m really excited by

his draw as well because he likes that sort of

run smothered up, just needing some luck in

the straight and a chance to dash at them late.

Everything has gone like clockwork really and I

would be disappointed if he doesn’t run well.”

It’s Me passed fit, Front Page scratchedThe Kosciuszko (1200m) favourite It’s Me

(Shamus Award) has been cleared to take

her place in the $1.3 million contest after

returning normal blood test results on Friday.

The Brett Cavanough-trained four-year-old’s

participation had been in some doubt after a

scope earlier this week revealed slight traces

of mucus, but It’s Me has responded well to

treatment and an endoscopic examination

on Friday confirmed the mucus had cleared.

However, the Geoff Duryea-trained Front

Page (Magnus), who was one of the leading

fancies behind It’s Me, has been scratched from

the feature for country-trained horses after

suffering injuries to an eye and his off hind leg

in float mishap. He has been replaced in the

field by the Danny Williams-trained Prairie Fire

(Snitzel), who was beaten six lengths by Everest

contender Classique Legend in The Shorts (Gr

2, 1100m) two starts ago.

Truth targets Kosciuszko defenceKeith Dryden is confident last year’s Kosciuszko

winner Handle The Truth (Star Witness) has

a good chance reigning supreme at Randwick

again despite having to carry 59 kilograms, a

rise of two kilograms from last year. "He's gone

perfectly for us and now we just need a good

ride and some luck," Dryden said. "But at this

stage, I'm pretty happy with where I'm at with

the horse." Handle The Truth will be partnered

by Nash Rawiller, who steered him to victory

over subsequent Group 2 winner Victorem

(I Am Invincible) in last year's race. Handle

The Truth arrives at Randwick following a

sixth-placed finish first-up in a Benchmark 88

handicap over course and distance a fortnight

ago. "He went really well first up. He usually

races well fresh and his record is also good

second up," Dryden said. "If he runs up to that

then I expect the horse to be right in the mix.

He's gone to another level in maturity. He's

always been physically strong but mentally,

he's a bit more relaxed on the track now.”

Irithea chases million-dollar milestoneMost seven-year-old mares are already in

the breeding barn but connections of Irithea

(Snitzel) are keen to achieve one more goal.

As a Group 3 winner, Irithea's residual value is

assured but with just over $900,000 in the bank,

Bjorn Baker says her owners are keen to see her

pass the $1 million milestone, which she will

achieve if successful in today’s Sydney Stakes (Gr

3, 1200m) at Randwick. "The syndicate as a whole

decided to keep racing her and I must say, I'm

happy about that because she has been a stable

stalwart," Baker said. "She has won just under a

million so that's one of the first aims with her this

preparation, to win a million. The main aim going

forward is trying to get her back into the Magic

Millions fillies and mares race. She was a good

second at the start of the year so that's the plan

with her."

Second Listed win for PartnerBalaklava Cup (Listed, 1600m) victor Winning

Partner (5 g Dawn Approach - Lady Frere by

Johannesburg) doubled up in the Murray

Bridge Gold Cup (Listed, 1600m) yesterday,

with the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained

chestnut making it two Listed wins this spring.

Sent out as second favourite, Winning Partner

- ridden by Barend Vorster - defeated the

favoured Aqueduct (Dundeel) by a length and

a half with a further three lengths to Regalo Di

Gaetano (Supreme Class) in third.

Mer De Glace could return to Melbourne 2019 Caulfield Cup winner Mer De Glace

(Rulership) could appear in Melbourne once

again in the future, with connections not ruling

out a return to Australia. The Hisashi Shimizu-

trained Mer De Glace, who is owned by the

Japanese Carrot Club, has not appeared on a

racetrack since suffering a tendon injury after

a sixth-placed finish in last year’s Melbourne

Cup. "Unfortunately, he suffered a tendon injury

after the Melbourne Cup last year," a Carrot Club

representative told Racing.com. "He is getting

better but not quite ready to be ridden at the

moment. His recovery from injury is the first

priority, we have no racing plan for him at all. It

was great to win the historical race Caulfield Cup

as his first Group 1 victory, we truly appreciate

everyone in Melbourne for the support we

received. We would love to go back to Melbourne

again sometime."

Griffiths, De Kock in training partnershipRobbie Griffiths has entered into a training

partnership with Mathew De Kock, the son

of champion South African trainer Mike De

Kock. The pair will be based at Griffiths’ current

Cranbourne yard, with Racing Victoria officially

approving the training partnership earlier this

week. "We're so excited to be joining in partnership

and really think it's a perfect opportunity for both

of us moving forward," Griffiths told Racing.

com. "Hopefully it won't be long before both

of our names are in the racebook and we have

our first runner together. In these modern times

with racing 24/7, partnerships have proved very

successful here in Australia and we hope we can

be the next pair to make an impact."

NZB Ready To Run breeze-ups onlineMore than 250 two-year-olds galloped down

the home straight at Te Rapa racecourse earlier

this week for New Zealand Bloodstock’s annual

Ready to Run Sale Breeze-Ups. With significant

importance placed on Breeze-Up footage for

buyers this year due to Covid-19 travel restrictions,

NZB made the decision to lengthen their

traditional Breeze-Up clip format and offer vision

of the mounting yard prior to horses breezing. The

2020 Breeze-Up clips were extended to include

additional footage near the 600-metre mark to

capture horses before they fully extended into

their gallop, while horses also had the last 200

metres of their work individually timed. While the

official Breeze-up videos themselves are slightly

longer, NZB also filmed the majority of the two-

year-olds being paraded in the mounting yard

at Te Rapa prior to their gallop. Bloodstock sales

manager Danny Rolston acknowledged the high

standard of quality and presentation that buyers

have become accustomed to at the Karaka Ready

to Run Sale. “The results of the sale speak for

themselves and after seeing the group of horses

parade and breeze up this week, it’s clear that

is set to continue long into the future,” Rolston

said. All Breeze-Up videos are now available

to view online at www.nzb.co.nz. Mounting

yard footage is available at https://vimeo.com/

showcase/7597026.

Supera scratchedGroup 1 performer Supera (Savabeel) won’t

take her place in the Livamol Classic (Gr

1, 2040m) after being scratched yesterday

morning as a result of a minor foot issue.

“The track or draw had nothing to do with

the decision to scratch her, it’s just a minor

foot issue,” said Ken Kelso, who trains in

partnership with his wife Bev. The Sir Peter

Vela-owned mare finished runner-up in the

Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hastings in

the first leg of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown

before finishing sixth in the Windsor Park

Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) earlier this month. Kelso

is unsure what his next steps are with the six-

year-old and said he will play it by ear: “I’m

not sure at this stage, it depends on the foot.”

True Enough set for returnThe Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable

will have runners at both Hastings and Ellerslie

this weekend, with Group 1 winner True Enough

(Nom Du Jeu) resuming in the Red Badge Sprint

(Gr 3, 1400m) at Hastings. “Obviously he is always

very genuine. He was meant to resume earlier in

the season but he had a bit of a setback,” Forsman

said. “He missed probably a week or so and we

thought it was best to miss the Triple Crown at

Hastings and reassess. He is an older horse and

probably a bit vulnerable fresh-up. He is not

really well weighted against some of those ones

that have had a run and are a bit sharper but he

is always competitive and you wouldn’t write

him off, that’s for sure. He is a big horse and with

Jonathan (Riddell) on he won’t have a lot of dead

weight to carry. He will put himself handy enough

from a good draw and should be competitive.”

The Tauranga Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) and the

Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) on Boxing Day are

likely targets for the seven-year-old, who has won

nine of his 22 starts and placed on a further ten

occasions.

Big weight turnaround for SheezallmineSheezallmine (Super Easy) will be vying to add

another Group 3 victory to her resume when

she lines-up in the Red Badge Spring Sprint (Gr

3, 1400m) at Hastings today. The Daniel Miller-

trained mare finished fifth first-up under 62

kilograms at Hastings last start and Miller said

she will appreciate the nine-kilogram weight

relief this weekend. “It’s going to be a big help

after having to lug around 62 kilograms last start,”

Miller said. “I thought she went a good race, she

was held up for quite a while at the top of the

straight and she was quite strong through the line

and after the line. I am really surprised with how

that first run has brought her on. She has really got

that spring back in her step now and it looks like

she is ready to go.”

Globetrotter Endless Drama on songNine-year-old Endless Drama (Lope De Vega)

showed he is not ready for retirement just yet with

a 20-length demolition of his rivals in an Avondale

open catchweight 1000-metre trial on Thursday.

The 31-start veteran is a multiple Group 2 winner

and has placed at Group 1 level on three occasions:

the Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), Lockinge

Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) and Stradbroke Handicap (Gr

1, 1400m). Tony Pike has overseen the latter part

of his career and was delighted to see one of his

favourite gallopers show a zest for racing. “The old

boy is going fantastic,” Pike said. “We sort of semi-

retired him at the end of his last preparation and

he has had a good four-month spell. We couldn’t

really find a home for him (at stud) so we brought

him back into work and that is probably the

best thing that could have happened to him. He

has always had some feet issues and soundness

issues, but he is as sound as he has ever been

since he has come to New Zealand. He has been

going super and off that trial on Thursday he has

still got the will to do it. He is a genuine Group 1

horse and the biggest thing is keeping him sound

and happy which he is at the moment. While he is

in that state we will give him another crack.” Pike

said Endless Drama will be aimed at sprint races

in the coming months, including the Railway

Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m), with the Legacy Lodge

Sprint (Listed, 1200m) at Te Rapa on November 7

a nice starting point.

Spratt sidelinedJockey Sam Spratt has a suspected broken

collarbone sustained at the Avondale trials on

Thursday. The 35-year-old, who has ridden

nine winners so far this season and has 905

career wins to her name, including 17 at Group

1 level, will be sidelined in the near future and

forgoes her six rides at Ellerslie today.

Press (Press Statement) and Key (Exceed And

on Thursday and their trainers think both

fillies have a bright future. “They were both

very good,” Benner said. “They are fillies with a

nice future. They have nice pedigrees and tick

a lot of boxes. Hold The Press possesses a lot of

tactical pace which will hold her in good stead

for her career. She is very nifty from the barrier

and very quick to jump into the bridle and get

into a spot, which makes the jockey’s job a lot

easier. She was very impressive. She quickened

up and it was very comfortable in the end. Key

was also impressive, but she has got her issues.

She can be a bit naughty, but it is something we

are working on. It was good for her to get that

one under her belt. We know how good she is,

we have just got to get the mental side of things

right.”

Weigh In returns to TracksideNew Zealand’s only television show dedicated

to news and reviews of the thoroughbred

industry returns on Monday on Trackside.

Weigh In will screen live at 8pm on Monday

nights after a new 30-programme series

was commissioned by some of the biggest

names in New Zealand racing. TAB NZ no

longer makes racing magazine shows as their

mandate has changed to primarily driving

turnover to maximise profits to return to

the industry. But the thoroughbred racing

industry will now have weekly review shows

through the support of those involved in the

industry, a family of sponsors put together

through the work of David Ellis. Weigh In will

be hosted by Emily Bosson along with regular

panellist Michael Guerin but will also see

the return to New Zealand television screens

of respected presenter Luke Radich as well

as expert panellists and guests. The show

will not only review the week’s best races

in New Zealand and Australia but discuss

industry news and feature regular segments

on developments inside the industry,

personality profiles, including club news,

major race days and the sales and breeding

industries. Weigh In will also showcase the

New Zealand thoroughbred racing industry

to Australian viewers through Sky Racing and

numerous overseas and domestic platforms.

HK: Golden Sixty, Beauty Generation square off againGolden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro) has improved

from his first-up win according to trainer Francis

Lui as the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) hero

shoots for his ninth victory in a row in tomorrow’s

Sha Tin Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m). “He’s good, he’s

come on from his last start when it was his first-

up run from the break and this time his condition

has improved,” Lui said. Last season the gelding

became the second horse in history to clean

sweep the Four-Year-Old Classic Series and he

returned this campaign with an exciting first-up

win over Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) in

last month’s Celebration Cup (Gr 3, 1400m). “He’s

good, he galloped on the grass and because of the

typhoon it was delayed until Wednesday, and also

this morning he had a good canter around the big

track,” Lui said. Tropical Storm Nangka skipped

past Hong Kong but that threat delayed both his

and Beauty Generation’s grass gallops on Tuesday,

and, after toppling the veteran champ first up with

a 17-pound weight allowance, this time the gap

between the pair will only be 10 pounds. “I have my

fingers crossed, it’s hard to say that I’m confident as

I’m just trying my best - I don’t want to put too much

pressure on myself,” Lui said. Beauty Generation’s

rider Zac Purton added: “There’s no doubt it’s

going to be a much more even contest, he still has

the advantage at the weights but I think it’ll be

interesting this time.”

HK: Prawn still a Premier prospectJoao Moreira believes Hot King Prawn (Denman)

is capable of winning a hitherto elusive Group 1

as the grey returns for his fifth Hong Kong racing

season in tomorrow’s Premier Bowl (Gr 2, 1200m)

with December’s top-level riches in mind. “The

main horses are not running against him in the

next couple of races, so he’s going to have his

opportunity now and I always thought he was a

horse who was capable of winning at least one

Group 1,” Moreira said. Hot King Prawn has been

in the mix for an elite success since his four-year-

old season, which saw him claim two Group 2s

and one Group 3 contest, but since then he has

narrowly missed on three occasions in Group

1 company, coming closest in last year’s Hong

Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) when second by a

neck to fellow John Size trainee Beat The Clock

(Hinchinbrook). Hong Kong’s sprinting ranks

have entered a phase of renewal, as is the normal

cycle every few seasons or so, with the retirements

last term of Group 1 winners Mr Stunning (Exceed

And Excel), Ivictory (Mossman) and D B Pin

(Darci Brahma), and top-class performers Little

Giant (Swiss Ace), Full Of Beauty (Darci Brahma)

and Thanks Forever (Duporth), thus removing six

110-rated or higher sprinters from the arena. “Hot

King Prawn has been a very consistent horse,

he has matched against some of these horses in

the past and been very competitive, so I’m not

expecting anything different other than him going

there and being very competitive,” Moreira said.

US: Red Knight takes SycamoreAt long last, Trinity Farm's six-year-old

homebred Red Knight (6 g Pure Prize - Isabel

Away by Skip Away) picked up his first graded

stakes win on his 21st start on Thursday at

Keeneland when he cut through the pack on

the final turn and ran down his rivals to take the

Sycamore Stakes (Gr 3, 12f). Ridden by James

Graham in the mile and a half feature, Red

Knight broke a tad slow in the ten-horse field

and soon found himself boxed in near the back

of the pack. Once he was free and clear at the

furlong pole, Red Knight found his second gear

and pulled even farther away from the pack.

The gelding crossed the wire two lengths clear

of pace-setting Postulation (Harlan’s Holiday),

with Ziyad (Rock Of Gibraltar) - coming off

a three and a half length last to Caulfield Cup

(Gr 1, 2400m) top-weight Anthony Van Dyck

(Galileo) at his most recent run - a head away

in third. "Mr Graham made it a great ride and a

great trip," said owner Thomas Egan of Trinity

Farm. "I think the announcer said that he sifted

his way through horses and changed lanes,

and that was very correct. They had originally

put him in a box and they wanted to keep him

there." Added Kenny McCarthy, assistant to

winning trainer Bill Mott: "It was a wonderful

ride by James—a great decision on the turn to

split those horses. And then he really picked the

horse up and finished strongly."

Analysis: Winning Partner followed up his recent win in the Balaklava

Cup (Listed, 1600m) with another stakes success here. He settled well

in about seventh place but trapped deep from his wide barrier before

improving (widest of all) rounding the turn. He challenged at the

200m and then drew away for a very good win. The favourite Aqueduct

went to the front and then travelled well at a reasonable tempo and

looked to be going well on straightening but was overtaken at the 200m

before battling on well for second, his first defeat in four Australian

starts since coming from New Zealand. Regalo Di Gaetano was eighth,

between runners, at the 600m, eased into clear running on turning

for home and the fought on to gain third in a photo from Wings Of

Pastrami, who held on for fourth after being handy all the way. [KB]

VERDICT Whereas Stradivarius has flourished in the Ascot Gold Cup andGoodwood Cup down the years, he has been successful in just

one of his three attempts at this autumn contest. Admittedly he’ll be very hard to beatif he’s in top form, but dual Irish St Leger winner SEARCH FOR A SONG is atempting alternative at bigger odds. The Dermot Weld-trained filly is still unexposedas a stayer and may well improve further now she’s upped to 2m. Fujaira Princeties in with the selection, while Dawn Patrol also figures highly in calculations.Spanish Mission’s chance would improve if the ground dries out.[Steve Boow]

VERDICT The Sir Michael Stoute-trained DREAM OF DREAMS (nap) hastaken his form to the next level this season, winning the Group 1

Sprint Cup at Haydock last time out on soft ground, and he went very close in theDiamond Jubilee over C&D at the Royal meeting. He should be tough to beat. OneMaster won the 7f Prix de la Foret for a remarkable third time recently and, havingbeen second in this last year on heavy, she can run a big race once more if theground is particularly testing. Oxted is the other 2020 Group 1 winner in the field(July Cup) but there are doubts about him on slow ground. The main threat to theselection could come from Starman, who is unbeaten in three starts and, after Yorklast time, is the only horse to finish ahead of Dakota Gold from his last five starts onthe Knavesmire.[Ben Hutton]

VERDICT This looks open but a serious test on soft or heavy ground shouldbe ideal for DAME MALLIOT and Wonderful Tonight. The

latter provided very compelling evidence on that score at Longchamp two weeks agobut this looks the right opportunity for Dame Malliot to return to the form that saw herbeat the males in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket in July. Third on thelist is the Irish Oaks winner Even So who, like the top two, was probably not seen tobest advantage in the Vermeille.[Richard Austen]

VERDICT His Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes second is the standout formhere, but a Listed defeat in the interim at Tipperary has to be a

concern as far as Ontario is concerned. The latter may have come a bit soon on theback of a hard battle at Newmarket all the same, and he should be a tad fresher here.Masen, Poetic Flare and Zaffy’s Pride looks well capable of mounting a sternchallenge, but preference is for FEDERAL. The turn of foot the latter displayed whenwinning his maiden here on debut, is still fresh in the memory bank and he looks aquality performer. [Seamus Howard]
