Fear Knots and Fear Nots

Welcome

As We Gather Have you ever thought about how powerful fear and worry are in our lives? Fear takes hold. It

ties us in knots and refuses to let us go. On our own, we’re powerless to undo these “fear

knots.” Only Jesus has the power to release us from their captivity. “Fear not,” He says to His

redeemed people! “You are Mine,” He refreshingly reminds us. Our worship on this Baptism

of Our Lord Sunday brings us with Jesus to the baptismal waters, enabling us to hear the

living voice of our God as He washes us clean and makes us His own. Fear may take its hold

for a moment, but Jesus’ hold is eternal. “Fear knots” may have their day. “Fear not” are

saving words forever.

(Verse 1)

Praise is rising Eyes are turning to You,

We turn to You. Hope is stirring,

Hearts are yearning for You, We long for You.

'Cause when we see You We find strength to face the day

In Your presence all our fears Are washed away, washed away

Hosanna, Hosanna! You are the God who saves us,

Worthy of all our praises. Hosanna, Hosanna!

Come, have Your way among us. We welcome You here, Lord Jesus.

Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Opening Sentences Romans 6:3–4 P Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized

into His death?

C We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as

Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in

newness of life.

Confession and Absolution P Since we are gathered to hear the Word of God, which speaks over us in the waters of

Baptism, to call upon our God in prayer and praise, which is the response of those who

have been made His own, and to receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who comes to us in the fellowship of this altar, let us first confess before our God and

one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed. We cannot set ourselves

free from the entanglement of our sinful condition. Therefore, together as one people,

united to Christ’s death and resurrection, let us take refuge in the faithfulness of our

God, seeking His forgiveness and grace, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

C Almighty God, have mercy upon us. Speak over us words of life. Forgive us our sins

and lead us with Jesus to life everlasting. Amen.

P Almighty God, your merciful Father, has declared you in Holy Baptism to be His child

and has gathered you into the family of His Church, in which He daily and richly

forgives all your sins and grants you new life through His Spirit. In the stead and by the

command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of

the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Song of Praise

“Come to the River of Life” C-V-C-B-C

(Chorus)

Come to the river of life, You will find healing here; Come to the river of life, come and drink freely here

Come if your heart is searching, come if your soul is thirsty; Draw near and drink of the mercy of Jesus Christ

At the river of life.

(Verse) There is a river whose streams make glad,

The city of God, the city of God; So, come if you're wounded or sad,

There is a river, there is a river.

(Bridge) It flows from the land of eternal light,

Where there's no more sorrow and no more night; Into the hearts that are lifted to Him, Filling His children again and again.

Prayer of the Day P Let us pray.

Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River Your voice proclaimed

Him to be Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Set free from fear

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 43:1–7 1But now thus says the LORD,

he who created you, O Jacob,

he who formed you, O Israel:

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;

I have called you by name, you are mine. 2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;

and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;

when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,

and the flame shall not consume you. 3For I am the LORD your God,

the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

I give Egypt as your ransom,

Cush and Seba in exchange for you. 4Because you are precious in my eyes,

and honored, and I love you,

I give men in return for you,

peoples in exchange for your life. 5Fear not, for I am with you;

I will bring your offspring from the east,

and from the west I will gather you. 6I will say to the north, Give up,

and to the south, Do not withhold;

bring my sons from afar

and my daughters from the end of the earth, 7everyone who is called by my name,

whom I created for my glory,

whom I formed and made.”

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Romans 6:1–11

1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

2By no

means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3Do you not know that all of us who have

been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4We were buried therefore with

him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory

of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united

with him in a resurrection like his. 6We know that our old self was crucified with him in order

that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to

sin. 7For one who has died has been set free from sin.

8Now if we have died with Christ, we

believe that we will also live with him. 9We know that Christ being raised from the dead will

never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10

For the death he died he died to

sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11

So you also must consider yourselves

dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Verse Mark 1:11b

P Alleluia. You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Alleluia.

Holy Gospel Luke 3:15–22 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the third chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

15

As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts

concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, 16

John answered them all, saying, “I baptize

you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not

worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17

His winnowing fork

is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff

he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

18

So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19

But Herod

the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the

evil things that Herod had done, 20

added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison.

21

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and

was praying, the heavens were opened, 22

and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily

form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am

well pleased.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

Song of the Day

“Spirit Song” V1-C-V2-C

(Verse 1)

Oh let the Son of God enfold you, With His Spirit and His love,

Let Him fill your heart and satisfy your soul. Oh let Him have the things that hold you,

And His Spirit like a dove, Will descend upon your life,

And make you whole.

(Chorus) Jesus, Oh Jesus,

Come and fill Your lambs. Jesus, Oh Jesus,

Come and fill Your lambs.

(Verse 2) Oh come and sing this song with gladness,

As your hearts are filled with joy, Lift your hands in sweet surrender to His name.

Oh give Him all your tears and sadness, Give Him all your years of pain,

And you'll enter into life in Jesus' name.

Sermon: “Fear Knots and Fear Nots” by Pastor Mark Airey

Sermon Notes:

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Page 13 January 13th, 2019

Installation of Congregational Officers Those to be installed are presented before the altar. The pastor addresses the congregation:

P Beloved in the Lord, Holy Scripture admonishes us that “all things should be done

decently and in order.” To that end, the constitution and bylaws of this congregation

establish various offices to which men and women are elected and appointed to serve.

The apostle Peter writes in his first epistle:

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied

grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who

serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be

glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever.

Amen.

P Tanni Cordis has been elected to serve as Secretary. You have been chosen to fill a

specific office and position of responsibility at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. You

are to work with the pastor, that our life together in Christ may be orderly and pleasing

in His sight.

You are to see that the services of God’s house are held at the proper times, that the

Word of God is purely preached and taught according to the Lutheran Confessions, that

the Sacraments of Christ are administered according to His institution, that provision is

made for the Christian instruction of young and old, that the erring are admonished, and

that discipline is maintained.

You are to see that the temporal affairs of the congregation are properly administered

and that proper support is provided for the workers of this congregation. You are to

assist in caring for the poor and the sick, in cultivating harmony among the members, in

promoting the general welfare of the congregation, and in furthering the kingdom of

Christ here and throughout the world.

While holiness of life and obedience to Christ are expected of all members of the

congregation, it is especially important that you, as an office-bearer in His Church, show

yourself, by word and example, to be faithful to Him in service and Christian devotion.

In the presence of God and of this congregation, I therefore ask you: Do you accept the

office entrusted to you, and do you promise faithfully to carry out your duties, trusting in

the Lord and conforming yourself to His Word in accordance with the faith of the

Evangelical Lutheran Church? If so, then answer: I do.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Page 14 January 13th, 2019

R I do.

P Beloved in the Lord, you have heard the promises of faithfulness spoken by this woman

whom you have selected to serve as an officer of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Do

you promise to support her in her work, to remember her in your prayers, and to work

with her to the best of the abilities that God has given you, so that He may be glorified

and His work be done in our midst? If so, then answer: We do.

C We do.

P Dear sister in Christ, I install you as an officer of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in the

name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

P The almighty and most merciful God enlighten and strengthen you in your office that

you may be a good and faithful steward to the glory of His name and the good of His

people.

C Amen.

Stand

P Let us pray.

Lord God, heavenly Father, we give thanks that You have raised up this servant for work

among Your people. We humbly implore You to grant her, by Your Holy Spirit, those

gifts needed for the faithful carrying out of her tasks, most especially wisdom, strength,

and a willing heart. Let Your blessing rest on this congregation. Strengthen the faith,

quicken the love, and enkindle the zeal of its members, that Your name may be glorified

and that here and in all places under heaven the kingdom of Your Son may be advanced.

We remember with thanksgiving Chari Perce who has faithfully served Your people and

has now completed her time of service. We pray that in the end of days we, with all Your

faithful people, may hear the voice of Christ saying: “Come, you who are blessed by My

Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”; through

Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

P Go in the name of the Lord. Be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of

the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. The almighty and most

merciful God, the Father, the T Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless and preserve you.

C Amen.

Prayer of the Church

Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us

and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but

have eternal life.

In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the

forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life.

Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by the Second Adam, Your Son, Jesus

Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him.

We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ.

His Word alone soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds, and drives away our fear. Grant

us Your Holy Spirit that we may receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation.

Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those

who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

forever and ever. Amen.

Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C Amen.

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Page 17 January 13th, 2019

Benediction Romans 6:3–4; Numbers 6:24–26 P Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized

into His death?

C We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as

Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in

newness of life.

P Walk in the newness of life you have been given by the Father, who has called you by

name and made you His own in Jesus Christ!

The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace.

C Amen.

Closing Song

“Fear Not” C-C-V-C-C-V-|-C-E

(Chorus)

“Fear not, for I am with you; Fear not, for I am with you; Fear not, for I am with you,”

Says the Lord.

(Verse) “I have redeemed you

I have called you by name, Child, you are Mine.

When you walk through the waters I will be there, and through the flame.

You'll not be drowned, You'll not be burned,

For I am with you.

(Ending) Fear Not.
