Dear Brothers and Sisters,Greetings from the desk of the Vice Chancellor

Message from the Vice Chancellor

11th September of every year has been celebrated as Universal Brotherhood Day all over the world. This day has a significant event. Swami Vivekananda addressed the world religious conference held in Chicago on 11th Sep 1893. On this day Swamiji put forth the concept of Universal Brotherhoods which is inherited in our culture, tradition and Sanathana Dharma by addressing the people “Dear Sisters and Brothers of America”. The entire galaxy of the conference gave a rousing reception, thrilling applause and great appreciation to Swamiji for his address.

Sanathana Dharma upholds “Integral Humanism” through Ekaathma Manavatha (True Socialism), Sarva Dharma Samabhava (True Secularism), Vishwa Bhrathrthva (Universal Brotherhoodness), Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (Universal Family), Sthree Poojana (Respect to Woman), Eakatha me Anekatha and Aekatha me Eakatha (All in one and One in all) and Ekam hi sath vipraaha bahudhaa vadanthi (Total freedom of worship and pluralistic divinity) Sahishnutha (Universal tolerance and acceptance) which are considered as the salient features and Sanathana Dharma which is of always inclusive in all aspects.

Off late, Mananeeya Padith Deen Dayal Upadhyaya popularised this through his book Integral Humanism and to achieve this “Antyoday” scheme which is the guiding vision

behind the welfare initiatives of the current dispensation. Antyoday concept is “No one should be left behind, and everyone should be taken together. 25th September happens to be the birth anniversary of Padith Deen Dayal Upadhyaya who has propounded the philosophy of Integral Humanism which means expansion of self-moving from individual to the Society, Nation, Universe and the entire Humanity.

Yoga as a socially relevant Science, Philosophy, Life-style and spiritual path to achieve the ultimate objectives of life always follows the ideals of Universal Brotherhoodness. There is nothing which are excluded from the preview of Yoga and it aims at Unity, Integrity and Totality.

I wish all the Yogabandhus a very happy and meaningful Universal Brotherhood Day.

In the present scenario of intolerance and heartedness towards Non-Islamic religion by the blind fanatic followers of Taliban and fundamentalists Pakistan ISI and other terroristic organisations, the Yoga teachings and practices play an important role and responsibility to bring harmony. On the occasion of Universal Brotherhood Day I appeal to the followers of Yoga and the entire community to uphold and propagate the vision and mission of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam to establish Health, Happiness and Harmony throughout the world.

äüsUÇm! (Brahmasütram)

pramz¡ jEimin> Acaedna½apvdit ih (äüsUÇm!-3-4-18)Parämarçaà jaiminiù acodanäccäpavadati hi (Brahmasütram-3-4-18)

Meaning: Jaimini considers (only those scriptural texts mentioning stages of life in which celibacy is obligatory)a reference (only to those stages; they are not injunctions; because other (scriptural texts) condemn (those stages).

The second Adhikarana of fourth Pada of third chapter deals with the idea of Sannyasa and its relevance in today’s scenario as a theme of discussions.

It is very well structured about tripod of Dharma in Chandogya Upanishat; Trayoga Dharma-skandha - 1. Yajna, Adhyayana and Daana (for Grihasthashrama, household stage of human journey); 2. Tapas (for Vaanaprastha, following penance after completing the household duties); and 3. Brahmachari - Acharyakulavasi (dedication for learning from childhood to teenager to the marriage stage).

In Kalidasa’s Raghuvamsha, it is very evident that all kings born in Surya dynasty (Ikshvaku, Raghu, Dileepa, Sagara etc.) lived as described above. Along with that, they also followed Sannyasa for Uttara-Yatra (post journey) after Purva-Yatra (prior journey); in other words Sannyasa stage, leading the life of a Yogi.

Now the question is whether Sannyasa is compulsory for everyone. Uttara-Yatra is focused on preparation for liberation. Brahmasamstha, a committed effort to realise, will finally be exposed to reality. Discarding the mortal body, one reaches final destination of absolute freedom.

In this context Purvapakshi, a professor of Purva Meemamsa, Jaimini says that there are no propositions to indicate the mandatory practice

of Sannyasa ashrama. Just as a passing manner it is said that for Amritattva one has to strive through Sannyasa. Mandatory things are only three as suggested by Chandogya and an oath has to be taken to follow only them. Therefore, Sannyasa ashrama is not compulsory, but choice based.

For this, Maharshi Veda Vyasa replies in a firm tone with determination about Sannyasattva as equal and compulsorily as other stages of life, even when determining suffixes or prefixes are not attached in these sentences. Mukti, Moskha, nirvana, Kaivalya, Amritattva etc are terms verily used in Upanishads and other parts of the Vedas which indirectly emphasises the importance of Sannyasa along with others. A Sadhaka has to transcend the body-cantered performances and move ahead to the destination by practicing different modes of meditations. Badarayana emphatically advocates Sannyasa for everyone.

Sannyasa, a post stage of human journey has four subdivision – Bahudaka (does not stay in a place for more than a night), Kutichaka (firmly staying in a place without travel, introspecting Atmatattva), Hamsa and Paramahamsa (no ownership of anything, no bondage of family). In the final stages of Sannyasa, It is truly an intense effort for Jnana without any other goal of life.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The growth of Medical Science is a never-ending and learning journey towards meeting the demands of human health care. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has further imposed a tough challenge on the healthcare professionals demanding their utmost commitment and sacrifice to save humanity. On the contrary, the exciting outcome of this pandemic is the global recognition of our ancient healthcare systems and interventions against the combat and prevention of the disease. The same could also fulfill the necessity of the development of affordable treatment regimes. Allopathy, Yoga, and other systems of AYUSH approach patient care in their unique ways. Though each of these methods has its advantages, none of them could meet the challenges in isolation. Hence, it is necessary to explore the possibilities of their amalgamation to bring out the best solutions. Towards the same, we have selected the theme “Integrative

Medicine and Optimal Immunity” for 24th INCOFYRA to make an effort to integrate Indian medical systems with Allopathy. Yoga is the basis for integration and provides insights by its Adhi-Vyadhi concepts. The evidence-based approach and the role of Integrative Medicine on immune health will be

presented at this conference by world-renowned scientists and clinicians.

With this focus of 24th INCOFYRA on Integrative Medicine and Optimal Immunity with Yoga as a lifestyle intervention, we welcome you all to our Prashanti Kutiram campus. Given the influence of the ongoing pandemic, we also give full consideration to the online participation of delegates and speakers at the conference.

Himalaya Yoga Olympiad

Starts on - Oct 1, 2021 | Finals - Dec 29, 30 & 31, 2021 at Prashanti Kutiram

The objectives of Himalaya (A Yoga Olympiad) is to promote the awareness of yoga and build up a network of yoga students, practitioners, teachers and sadhakas at the national and international levels. We hope to spread the message of yoga as a science of Holistic living to be achieved through Jnána Yoga, Rája Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Karma Yoga, as proclaimed by Swami Vivekananda. The syllabus, therefore, cannot end with physical demonstration of yogasanas only. It also assesses knowledge and grasp of concept and definition of yoga and its various techniques, for total growth of the individual, including physical, mental, emotional and intellectual development and their spiritual basis. HIMÁLAYA thus aims at helping the youth of our country grow together, and expand their vision, so they leave behind the mad rush of cut throat competition and selfishness and engage in co-operative, harmonious pro-active living.

Pre Conference Workshops

Dec 26 – 31, 2021 at Prashanti Kutiram

Pre-Conference Workshops have been an integral part of INCOFYRA, and are conducted as three independent tracks, namely Continuing Medical Education (CME), Continuing Research Education (CRE) and Continuing Yoga Education (CYE). These are small focused meetings that take place the day before the main conference. They are intended to provoke intellectual discussion, among a diverse range of participants, on a specific topic. PCWs may also consist of workshops discussing critical issues, methods, theories emerging in the field. Participants can attend any one of the tracks, as all these sessions will be happening parallely.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Our current knowledge-based society and the many actualizations within the yoga profession require a great responsibility of physicians and yoga teachers to continuously develop and refine their skills.

Professionalism is a key component to this end. A prerequisite for this aim is lifelong learning so that own practice performance will improve.

Indeed, it turns out that it is not enough to solely rely on experience. Although it is generally assumed that an increase of professional experience, knowledge and skills through the years of practical exercise leads to a higher quality of care, research demonstrated inverse relationship.

CME on Integrative Medicine based on holistic health includes the following;

Different diseases including (COVID–19, Cardiac Health, Respiratory Health, Diabetes Mellitus,  and Mental Health). The basic principles of integrative medicine along with Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy  (IAYT) and latest updates on clinical, academic and research approaches towards Holistic Healing will be addressed. Both theory and practice will be covered in this CME.

"Congratulations, Sajan Prakash for creating history, who is the first-ever Indian Swimmer to qualify directly for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He was one amongst the 30 swimmers who participated in the novel research study to understand the “Role of Pranayama (Yogic breathing practices) in improving the pulmonary endurance and performance of competitive swimmers” where he was introduced to Pranayama.

This study was conducted by Chirag S Hakked, who is presently a Yoga Consultant from Consult. Yoga, an S-VYASA Alumni & also former staff of VYASA International. This research was a part of his MSc Yoga thesis conducted at Basavanagudi Swimming academy under the guidance of Dr. N K Manjunath, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dr. Ragavendrasamy, Assistant Medical Officer, Udumalpet Government Hospital.

Pranayama practices are known to be beneficial in improving the pulmonary functions. Hence, this study was conducted to assess the effect of Pranayama on the performance and endurance of competitive swimmers. As a part of the study, 30 swimmers, both male and female competitive

swimmers of age 13-20 years were enrolled in the study. The participants were trained in Vibhagiya Pranayama, Bhastrika Pranayama and Nadi Shodhana with Anthar Kumbhaka for half an hour, five days a week for the period of one month. The results were suggestive of improvement in the pulmonary endurance. The findings of this study was published later with the title "Yogic breathing practices improve lung functions of competitive young swimmers" in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine.

Swimming as a competitive sport involves propelling one's body in water by pushing against it. The water, because of its greater density, offers more resistance to the swimmers than air in land based sport. Competitive swimmers are expected to have specific anthropometric features compared to other athletes. Swimming being an activity that requires physical strength and endurance, is often associated with large lung volumes and relatively reduced flow, which may represent a physiological variant of normal pulmonary functions but also can signify an obstructive abnormality.

Sajan has been practicing pranayama techniques regularly along with other techniques. Pranayama is more than a simple breathing exercise. It is not merely

breath control but is one of the powerful yogic techniques used to regulate the flow of the energy, ‘prana’ in the body to a higher frequency. After Yogic Breathing Practices (YBP), following are part of his regular training protocol: Sectional Breathing (Vibhagiya Pranayama), Yogic Bellows Breathing (Bhastrika Pranayama), Bhramari and Alternate Nostril Breathing with Voluntary Internal Breath Retention (Nadi Shodhana Pranayama with Anthar Kumbhaka).

Yoga, an age-old science and way of life, is not only limited to promoting wellbeing, but it is useful in improving the potential of human performance. We urge the scientific community and the sports authorities to include Yoga based applications in enhancing the performance of sports personnel."

Swami Vivekananda is essentially a humanist. A humanist is a one who loves humanity. Like Gautama Buddha, and Sri Adi Shankara, Swami Vivekananda loves humanity intensely. Siddhartha was unable to bear the sight of suffering in mankind. Sickness, old age, and death pained him most. He wanted to know the reason for all human suffering. Wherever possible he prevented suffering. Ultimately he found himself to be the knower of truth, and the truth was to put up with suffering. Adi Shankara was equally a great humanist; he was unable to bear the sight of suffering due to poverty. His spiritual journey started with his help and generosity to save the women from the clutches of adversities. Love of God is nothing but love of mankind. Love when translated into action is service and service invariably involves self-sacrifice. When one overcomes ego in every shade, one becomes a spiritual giant. All the three, Swami Vivekananda, Adi Shankara, and Great Buddha, have evolved to be masters of spirituality on account of their intensest love for humanity.

Swami Vivekananda right from his childhood loved his parents, brother, and sisters. He served them giving up his personal comforts. His love outpoured itself beyond limits and extended to outsiders as well. Whatever was found useful to the people, he gave away without reservation. Food, clothes, and vessels were freely given away to the people in the street. His humanism was

ever in flood. When his father Vishwanath Dutta passed away, he could not swallow sorrow nor could he see his widowed mother suffering. The poverty at home pained him most. Mother was to be taken care of, brothers were to be educated, sisters were to be get married. Above all, they were all to be fed well. There was no food at home. Nor was he able to procure food. He was jobless. He could not therefore take food at home. Sometimes, for more than a week continuously, he did not eat to enable his family members to eat well. He was so self-less that he would not eat so that his family would be eating well. The three, love, service, and sacrifice were very well visible in his own life. When he was at home as the son of Bhuvaneshwari Devi, his love was confined to the family. Later when he became a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, his love expanded. He loved his master Sri Ramakrishna and co-disciples with equal fervor. He never hesitated to take care of them.

When Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa passed away, Swami Vivekananda once again felt frustrated, unable to see the sufferings at home and in the ashram. He left Calcutta as a wandering monk. His love thereby did not diminish but increased and extended to the brothers and sisters who were born as children of mother Bharath. He wandered all over the country, from Calcutta to Kanyakumari with a bleeding heart. The suffering people, the ignorant people, the sick people, and the dying people tore his heart to pieces. Many a day he starved and slept under the greenwood tree’s shade, unable to find a way to help them. His love has now grown to national proportions. It was at Kanyakumari, on the 25th, 26th, and 27th December 1892, he was able to find a way to be useful to the mankind. From there, he hit upon a plan to visit the west to redeem the people of his love.

From India to United States, he travelled leaving Bombay in May 1893. He reached Chicago in August, 1893. He was drawn to the people,

suffering from ignorance and narrow-mindedness in the west. Fanaticism, and superstition of the people pained him most. He wept unable to see the plight of people all over the world. Both the physical and the intellectual starvation in mankind made him suffer most. It was felt that he should do the service at every level, physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. All this was due to his intensest love for the mankind.

On the 11th September 1893, he looked at the Americans in the Columbus Hall, his heart flooded out with the phrase- “Sisters and brothers of America…”, full with the love. He thereby became a yogi with abundant love for mankind in need. Yoga is growth. Growth is vertical, horizontal and circular. In the case of Swami Vivekananda, the love of humanity grew in every direction infinitely, and therefore the fulfillment of love was seen in the applause of the audience when he addressed the gathering as sister and brothers of America. Only a yogi can win the universe because of the overflowing love.

Education cannot be Learnt or Taught in Isolation at Home!

Education vs. Health! To Re-open Schools or not:

Some take the leap, Others hold back! The school is the Right Place for a Healthy Start. Schools have direct contact with at least 6 hours a day during the most critical years of their social, physical, and intellectual development. Each school day provides students the opportunity to learn the importance of behaviors and skills needed to engage in a healthy lifestyle. It is easier and more effective to develop healthy behaviors during childhood than to change unhealthy behaviors during young adulthood.

Parents are a worried lot! There are thousands of students who are waiting for schools to reopen. On one hand School means both fun and study. On the other, there are concerns over the looming health crisis that might hit India soon in the form of the

COVID-19 third wave in October - November. However, its intensity is expected to be much lower than the second wave says the mathematical modeling of the pandemic.

Discretion is better part of valor!

A phased or staggered reopening of schools is the need of the hour!

No vaccine for children aged 6 to 12 is a serious concern. When it is a trade-off between

education and heath, parents choose health first. Online classes have served well as an emergency. Online education can only be a part of a broader hybrid model of education in the coming days!

Parents Relax! Multiple published studies and medical research conducted at national and international level by apex medical bodies report that younger children are least susceptible to any severe or fatal form of COVID, even without any vaccination.

Online Education Outcomes - No Education or Some Education!

An August 2021 survey done by the scholars' group found that in rural areas, only 8% were studying online regularly, 37% were not studying at all, and about half were unable to read more than a few words.

The reasons were that many children did not have their own Smart phones, mobile connectivity was poor, they did not have the money to pay for mobile Internet, schools were not sending study material or online education was too hard to grasp for some.

For those who do have access to the right technology, there is evidence that learning online can be more effective in a number of ways. Some research shows that on average, students retain 25-60% more material when learning online compared to only 8-10% in a classroom.

What is Education?

Education is interplay of human behavior between children and their family, classmates and teachers. Education is a ‘web of communications and inter relationships. There cannot be any education in isolation. These are fundamental of education.

Education is a complex human endeavor that takes place when children interact with other children and teachers. Mere enhancement of internet to 5G will not give children a meaningful education

Education is The Most Powerful Weapon for Changing the World! Today basic education is the right and responsibility for all citizens. Universal access to education is a worldwide concern.

Learning requires a safe, friendly environment, qualified and motivated teachers, and instruction in languages students can understand. Formal education describes the learning of academic

facts and concepts through a formal curriculum. Informal education describes learning about cultural values, norms, and expected behaviors by participating in a society. Our earliest learning experiences generally happen via parents and immediate relatives.

Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of minds said Albert Einstein! Education is acquisition of knowledge and skills! Education should be value based. Education is the catalyst that can help reduce poverty, improve health, prevent needless deaths & illnesses, eliminate gender inequality and create a sustainable planet. As per UN estimates, in the developing world, a child born to a mother who can read is 50% more likely to survive past age five.

Family is the first school where children start their initial learning. The role of teacher is played mother and father and other members of family. Family is a basic unit of any society and has a universal existence across the world.

Education in the Face of the Pandemic

Emergencies call for emergency measures!

• The COVID-19 has resulted in schools shut all across the world. Globally, over 1.2 billion children are out of the classroom.

• Millions of children have had to adapt to new types of learning.

• Education has changed dramatically, with the rise of e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms.

Online Learning!

One may take the school to the homes, but one cannot make the home a school. Even in counties with advanced technology the online education outcomes are not so great!

The unplanned and rapid move to online learning – with no training, insufficient bandwidth, and little preparation – will result

Yoga Sudha30

October 2021 31

in a poor user experience that is not conducive to sustained growth. I believe that a new hybrid model of education will emerge, with significant benefits. I believe that the integration of information technology in education will be further accelerated.

There are challenges to overcome! Students without reliable internet access and technology, struggle to participate in digital learning; this gap is seen across countries.

Recent Trends in Education Services: Digital Transformation

Prior to the pandemic most learning activities happened in the classroom. The two recent trends in digital transformation in the education industry during the COVID-19 pandemic are-

• The expansion of distance education and• The increasing innovations in educational

technologies.

The emergence of Internet-based distance learning is attributed to the revolution in information Technology. Today, students can even conduct virtual experiments and simulations with educational software applications. Internet-based learning enables interaction between instructors and students.

The Massive Open Online Course -MOOC is an online educational platform that offers most of its content for free. The MOOC, which is a result of the Kahn Academy on YouTube, offers various courses for, among others, universities, skills and job training institutions, and preschools. Students can select their own courses.

Online interactive sessions - Interactive online learning has also become a trend in the education sector. Live and interactive online courses can overcome challenges by encouraging two-way communication and allowing students to attend a lecture in real-time, ask questions, and discuss work with instructors and classmates from anywhere in the world.

The Digital Divide

The digital divide is a new concept, and it refers to the inequalities in society in terms of knowledge, that is, the gap between people who have access to ICT and those who do not. The ICT infrastructure is necessary to build the education services online. The wider the digital divide, the wider the educational opportunity gaps.

Let us accept that many families are not financially well-off to be able to provide a good quality gadget to each of their off-springs. Their adoptability to digitization is great. Our children are superb and are fluent in their digital know-how, and dexterous with their quick response.

Basic Nutrition and Health of the Kids

Lancet - The pandemic has put an estimated 370 million children across 50 countries without School meals. Of these are 115 million children are from India. These children run the risk of severe malnutrition. This has pushed the school nutrition program by a decade!

Added to this catastrophe, the children are subjected to Child abuse of child labor and child marriages.

Hybrid Learning!

Hybrid learning is an educational model where some students attend class in-person, while others join the class virtually from home. Educators teach remote and in-person students at the same time using tools like video conferencing hardware and software.

Blended learning combines in-person teaching with asynchronous learning methods, where students work on online exercises and watch instructional videos during their own time.

Both face-to-face and online learning have their benefits and weaknesses. Together it gives a flexible learning experience. It gives the freedom of independent academic exploration.

Back to School and Online as well!

Reopen with a detailed child protection policy, guidelines, and action plan must be designed to protect children from various forms of vulnerabilities emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Education - nudged and pushed to change - could lead to surprising innovations. The digital divide should be addressed- Resilience must be

built into our educational systems.

It is true that Covid-19 is not caused by governments but it has evolved as a disaster because of lack of foresight and lack of good governance. We will overcome the virus sooner or later but at what stage Covid-19 ceases to be a disaster remains to be seen. Surely, its impact will linger longer on those who have lost their family.

Universal Brotherhood day was celebrated at Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana on 11th September, 2021. The programme heralded with ‘Vedaghosha’ by Sri Surendra Kumar and Sri Naveen Kumar, from Division of Yoga and Spirituality, S-VYASA.

Prof. M K Sridhar, Registrar, S-VYASA, welcomed all the guests and delineated the importance of Universal Brotherhood day with the premise of Swami Vivekananda’s address in World Parliament of Religions at Chicago held on 1893 where Swami Vivekananda emphasized the Hindu culture stood for non-violence, tolerance, universal brotherhood as against

sectarianism bigotry, which are propounded by the western world.

Dr. B R Ramakrishna, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, S-VYASA, said that brotherhood is inherited in the minds and genes of every Hindu where a Hindu is always true secular, tolerant and accepts ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family). He compared the materialistic western world to the eastern world and the contemporary disturbances in neighbouring countries where women and children are treated in inhuman way. He said that the Indian culture always promotes brotherhood, harmony, integral humanism (Ekatma Manavatavada).
