Welcome to worship! As “morning breaks upon the tomb” (CW 159) its gaping entrance and vacant depths stir a mixture of emotions among Jesus’ followers. But with proclamation of the resurrection, ignorance turns to understanding and sorrow changes to joy. With the rising of the sun, faith-filled hearts soar to proclaim the angels’ message: He is risen! If you are a guest with us, we are glad that you are here. We invite you to worship with us again!

OPENING HYMN: 160, “This Joyful Eastertide” Stand

OPENING RESPONSES: (Psalm 18, with added words at end) M: I love you, O LORD, my strength. C: The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. M: He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. C: I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. M: The cords of death entangled me. C: The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. M: The cords of the grave coiled around me. C: The snares of death confronted me. M: In my distress I called to the LORD; C: I cried to my God for help. M: From his temple he heard my voice. C: My cry came before him, into his ears. M: As for God, his way is perfect.

C: The word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. M: For who is God besides the LORD? C: And who is the Rock except our God? M: It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. C: He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. M: The LORD lives! C: Praise be to my Rock! M: He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me, C: who saved me from my enemies. M: He rose from the dead on the third day. C: Because he lives we too shall live. M: Come let us rejoice in him! Be Seated

HYMN: 163, “Welcome, Happy Morning” PRAYER OF THE DAY M: O God, you made the dawn of this most holy day shine with the glory of our Lord’s resurrection. Grant that we who have been raised from the death of sin by your life- giving Spirit may worship you in sincerity and truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. C: Amen.

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 12:1-6 (NIV) 1 In that day you will say: "I will praise you, O LORD. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. 2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation." 3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4 In that day you will say: "Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. 5 Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. 6 Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you." PSALM: 30, page 76 (in the front of the red hymnal)

Epistle Lesson: I Corinthians 15:51-57 (NIV) 51Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." 55"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the

law. 57But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Verse of the Day: Alleluia! Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia! For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. Alleluia! (I Cor. 15:22)

HYMN: 143, “He’s Risen, He’s Risen”

Stand Gospel: John 20:1-18 (NIV) 1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!” 3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the burial cloth that had been around

Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) 10Then the disciples went back to their homes, 11but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. 13They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don't know where they have put him.” 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. 15“Woman,” he said, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” 18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

CONFESSION OF FAITH: Excerpt from the explanation of the Second Article of the Apostle’s Creed, from Luther’s Large Catechism If you are asked, “What do you believe in the Second Article, concerning Jesus Christ?” answer briefly, “I believe that Jesus Christ, true Son of God, has become my Lord.” What is it to “become a Lord”? It means that he has redeemed me from sin, from the devil, from death, and from all evil. Before this I had no Lord and King but was captive under the power of the devil. I was condemned to death and entangled in sin and blindness. When we were created by God the Father, and had received from him all kinds of good things, the devil came and led us into disobedience, sin, death, and all evil. We lay under God’s wrath and displeasure, doomed to eternal damnation, as we had deserved.

There was no counsel, no help, no comfort for us until this only and eternal Son of God, in his unfathomable goodness, had mercy on our misery and wretchedness and came from heaven to help us. Those tyrants and jailers now have been routed, and their place has been taken by Jesus Christ, the Lord of life and righteousness and every good and blessing. He has snatched us, poor lost creatures, from the jaws of hell, won us, made us free, and restored us to the Father’s favor and grace. He has taken us as his own, under his protection, in order that he may rule us by his righteousness, wisdom, power, life, and blessedness. Let this be the summary of this article, that the little word “Lord” simply means the same as Redeemer, that is, he who has brought us back from the devil to God, from death to life, from sin to righteousness, and now keeps us safe there. C: Alleluia! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Alleluia!

Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Be Seated

SPECIAL PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (Psalm 126) M: When the LORD brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great

things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. Carry us, Lord, in all our sorrows, with the comfort that we will reap with joy in your heavenly kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen. M: Let us praise the Lord.

C: Thanks be to God. THE BLESSING M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ † and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: Amen.
