INTRODUCTION

The main goal of having Christian service for children is to teach them to have a“servant’s heart.” Romans 12:1 and 2 says: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, bythe mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptableunto God, which is your reasonable service.” We want to teach children that it isonly reasonable to serve God because He bought us. It is a command to tell othersabout Jesus (Matthew 28: 19). Even a small child can start serving the Lord by learn-ing to be a servant.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE PLANNING MEETINGWe would like to suggest that your leadership team plan at least one GroupChristian Service a month. It would be great to do this at your yearly planning meet-ing and set the dates for the entire year.

Please copy the Individual Christian Service Sheets and have them available forthe children. You will then want to three-hole punch them so that they can be placedin their Olympian Notebook. When a child picks out a Christian Service that theywould like to do, have them open their Olympian Notebook to the current week’sQuiet Time and place the Christian Service in that spot in the notebook. That waywhen the child opens their notebook to do their Quiet Time, the Christian Servicepage is there to remind them what they need to do.

The Group Christian Service Sheet gives guidelines to help you in planning yourgroup Christian Service Opportunity. There is a Planning Sheet for each service thatwill help you in assigning different leaders or parents to help in various areas. Makesure you put target dates when the arrangements need to be made for each step ofthe Group Christian Service.

Gather decorating supplies or have children decide what they would like to bring to helpdecorate the room. It would be good to have a theme for the décor.

Assign children to a specific task as they arrive. Have a coach that is in charge of eacharea of cleaning and have the children work under the supervision of that coach. Whenthe job is completed, let the children know that they have done a good job.

___ 3. Make sure you present the gospel in your singing.___ 4. Be creative — use bells, other instruments, have someone read a poem,

take a gift with a gospel or encouragement tract, etc.___ 5. Line-up transportation — cars, bus or vans along with drivers.

The day of the event:

___ 1. Assign each leader 4-6 children to make sure the children are on the bus, cars or vans after each stop and are in with the group while they are singing.

Preparations:1. Decide and confirm the location of your nativity.2. Determine whether it will be a drive through or a walk through event.3. Arrange for animals to help complete the scenes.4. Make arrangements for scenery and props.5. Have children wear bathrobes or make costumes for them to wear.6. Send sign up sheets home for the children.

(Note: Have at least two different groups so the children can switch if they get coldor tired)

7. Hand out flyers — advertise in the local newspaper.

A few days before activity:1. Set up scenery; make sure all costumes are ready.2. Have the children take their places and tell them what they are and are not to do.3. Make sure they arrive early the night of the nativity.

The day of the activity:1. Check the scenery and make sure everything is set.2. As the children arrive help them get dressed and ready.

(Note: Make sure there are adult leaders out with them at all times. They can be dressed as shepherds)

3. While the first group goes out have the other group do fun activities until it is timefor them to go out.

4. Have drinks and a snack ready for the first session when they come in.5. Let the children share about what is happening while they are out in the scene.

1. Choose a missionary or several missionaries that you would like to support. This could be a special need that the missionary has or just a love gift to them.

2. Share the need with the children and decide what they can do to help meet this need.

Suggestionsa. Collect aluminum cans and take them to a recycling center for cash.b. Have a penny contest to see who can bring in the most pennies.c. Have a penny auction (Have people donate used items that are for children.

Wrap them and have a penny auction where the children can bid for the unknowntreasure). Proceeds go to the missionary.

d. Have the children bring in the items needed to send to the missionary. Put aclothesline in front of the room and have the small items clothespinned to the line.See how fast you can fill the line.

e. Challenge the children to do jobs around the house to earn money for the offering.f. Show the children the needs of this missionary and make a poster. As they bring

in their offerings, they can see how their giving is making a difference.

b. Pray as a group for the names on the board and also give each child a nameto pray for during the week.

c. When a person on the board comes to Christ indicate it by putting a cross, star, or crown, etc. over their name and share the exciting news with the children.

d. Challenge the children to invite their friends to an evangelistic meeting or activity.

Go over the tracts with the children before you leave so they know what the tract isabout. Make sure the tracts are attractive and present the gospel clearly.

Set an amount of time to be giving out tracts and set a time for them to return to a cen-tral location. Have a sharing time about their experiences.
