The Macpherson-Wodka team started with a bang as we watched Wendy light up the lanes with a huge first (5 game) block of 1233. Dave followed suit in the afternoon - taking the team to the high qualifying po- sition worth $200. Going into Sunday’s match play they never looked back as they lead from start to finish. Several teams made a run at them. Tennelle Milligan and Ricky Corona made it closer towards the end of the day, finishing a strong second, followed by Michelle Silver and Ty Stockle in third. Dave and Wendy both want to give their sincerest thanks to Bill Mossontte and his wonder- ful staff at Mission Hills Bowl as well as to the WWPB for all the hard work. Wendy remarked, “It’s so great to see so many fa- miliar faces not only with the staff at Mission Hills but in the crowds as well...it’s always fun to bowl in Bill’s great pro-ams”. Bill Mossontte also wanted to thank all of his pro-am bowlers and faithful spectators, “...with- out them, the tournament Wodka & Macpherson 3-Peat at Mission Hills WWPB Mixed Doubles by Lori Yamasaki wouldn’t be the great success that it is”. Dave continues working with Ebonite International as their District Sales Manager. He and his wife, Lori, and their daughter Nicole recently wel- comed the newest addition to their family - another baby girl, Ashlyn Grace, born on Oct. 14. Wendy will be off to Japan soon with fellow pros - Kim Terrell, Leanne Barrette, and Carol Gianotti for work with the JPBA and several Japanese pro- prietors. They’ll be teaching and bowling in pro-ams all over the country. Wendy looks forward the Mission Hills WWPB event every year, “It really gets me into competition mode”, she stated and continued, “I always bring my Dad (Chris Macpherson), he’s my good luck charm”. This victory serves as her first ever 3-peat! In her spare time at home, Wendy volunteers her expertise in coaching the UNLV Men’s Bowling Team. As always, the Mission Hills WWPB Mixed Doubles event concludes the Western Women Professional Bowlers calendar year. The ladies will be back in action on February 18-19, 2006 at Harley’s Camarillo Bowl where we will have our annual open meeting. We will then re- turn to Yorba Linda Bowl for another mixed doubles event on April 8-9, 2006. Details and in- formation are available at our website, www.wwpb.com. Machuga Wins His First Council Bluffs, IA—Mike Machuga proved that good things come to those who wait, as he won his first career Denny’s PBA Tour title by de- feating Bill O’Neill in the final match of the 2005 Greater Omaha Classic, 256-245, Sun- day at Thunderbowl. Machuga entered the week winless in his first 79 career events and was 0-3 in title matches prior to Sunday’s win. The 29-year-old struck on his first five shots before a failed 4- 9 split conversion in the 6th frame. O’Neill, a 24-year-old making his first career televised finals appearance, couldn’t take advantage, leaving a 9-pin on his next shot. Machuga clinched the match by striking on his first two shots in the 10th frame. ”That’s what I’ve dreamed about, coming through in the clutch,” said Machuga (Erie, Pa.), who earned $40,000. “I’ve been bowling well for quite some time and things are start- ing to go my way.” Machuga, who bowled at the University of Nebraska from 1994-96, advanced to the title match by defeating David Traber, 225-184, in the semifi- nals. Using a Brunswick Vapor Zone, Machuga struck in frames 4-7 while Traber, searching for Mike Machuga his 5th career Tour title, struck just once over the same span. In the first semifinal, O’Neill overcame opens in the 7th and 9th frames by striking out in the 10th to defeat Wes Malott, who was making his fourth consecu- tive televised finals appearance of the season, 223-215. O’Neill (Levittown, Pa.) earned $20,000 for his 2nd place finish while Malott (Austin, Texas) and Traber (Hebron, Ill.) earned $10,000 apiece for their 3rd and 4th place finishes. LAKE FOREST — Kevin Gannon, 58, like the EnergizedRabbit clashing his cymbals won the West Coast Senior Tour For-est Lanes’ edition $900 title. It was Kevin’s 20th title. According tothe fans and competitors, Gannon has to be one of California’sfinest, for sure consistent bowlers.

Tournament Director Dick Sanders said, “I really cannot believehow consistent he is. I think he weighs about 140 pounds, managesto get a ton of ball into that 1-2 pocket.”

Other scratch bowling fans remarked he was on the par of othergreat lefties like Earl Anthony, Ross Packard and Hank Marino.

Mario Marquez, Forest Lanes long time league coordinator said,“I think Kevin loves Forest Lanes. I remember way back he wonmore than his share of scratch tournaments — it’s possible.”

Where did he get that energy?Bowling in his parent’s 16-lane Long Beach Marina Lanes — on

real maple, pine center, alleys. Yes, you had to control that hardrubber ball over the hard maple, apply enough lift to take advan-tage of the softer center pine, hopefully your ball finished withstriking force.

Yes, like the Energized Rabbit, fully charged enough power tostrike out.

Averaging over 200, he led Joe Merrill by 61 pins after 12 games.Joe blasted a tournament-high 300 game at Kevin taking the finalblock lead by about 70 pins.

In the final six you could hear the cymbals clash (strike) as heovercame the deficit 216-233-269-248-256 and the coup 245.

Mario concluded, “I am sure Kevin likes Forest Lanes like allthe scratch bowlers.”

Director Sanders, smiled, “Forest Lanes was great. Charlie has anice center here in Lake Forest, Orange County.”

Oh, the Energized Rabbit might be back — this writer remem-bers Harvey, he was here — Harvey was a star.

Our 1st AnnualThanksgiving Mixed Doubles

Beat the boardNo-Tap Tournament

Del Rio Tournament ClubTenpin Slantsby Joe Lyou

The unexpected postponement of the inaugural Kingpin Mil-lion Dollar Challenge inconvenienced a great number of bowlers, and in many cases, caused them to lose money. Tenpin Slants canpersonally attest to that.

I had planned to cover the KMDC, originally scheduled Oct.22-30 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, so I made reserva-tions at the Circus Circus Hotel/Casino for the entire nine days ofthe tournament.

But when the event was called off—at least for this year—I hadto change my plans, including what to do with my nonrefundableairline ticket. It turned out that my good friend, Dick Evans, theHall of Fame bowling writer from Florida, was in the same boat.He also had a nonrefundable airline ticket.

After an exchange of several e-mails, Evans and I decided tospend a “football weekend” in Reno. We’re both huge gridiron fans.Evans is a graduate of the University of Miami while yours trulywent to USC. The Hurricanes are always a football powerhouseand the Trojans—as of this writing—are ranked as the nation’s No.1 team.

Evans and I agreed to a four-day (Thursday through Sunday)stay at the Circus Circus. That meant I had to change my airlinedeparture date, for which I was nicked an extra $58. It was wellworth it, though, as we had a great time in “The Biggest Little Cityin the World.” We watched so many football games on Saturdayand Sunday that our eyeballs were ready to pop out of our heads.

If you’ve never watched football at a sports book in Reno—orLas Vegas—it’s like watching a 3-ring circus (which was quite ap-ropos, considering where we were staying). There’s always at leasta half-dozen different TV football games going on at the same timein the sports book. It’s a blast.

Since Friday was a free day (no football games), that morningEvans and I were to interview Jennifer Cunningham, the genialDirector of Sales and Marketing at Circus Circus. Not only was shefriendly, she was also full of enthusiasm and animated when shespoke during our interview.

The interview had been arranged by Joan Romeo, owner andoperator of The Marketing Team in Van Nuys. She is often em-ployed by Circus Circus as a bowling industry consultant. Romeoalso arranged for Evans and me to tour the recently renovated Na-tional Bowling Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Our interview with Jennifer Cunningham was quite interesting. She is very knowledgeable about bowling, having been employedfor 11 years at the National Bowling Stadium, first as the Directorof Marketing and later as the National Sales Manager.

During Cunningham’s 25 years in Reno, she also has worked atthe Silver Legacy and Peppermill before joining the Circus Circusexecutive staff in 2001. All of this experience came in handy whenCircus Circus, Eldorado and Silver Legacy formed Tri-Properties,Inc.shortly after the National Bowling Stadium opened in 1995.Tri-Properties has cosponsored virtually every major event held atthe stadium.

Their sponsorship will include the 2006 USBC Women’s Cham-pionships (formerly the WIBC National Championships) and theUSBC Queens. For the ladies entering these events, Circus Circus, according to Jennifer Cunningham, has a special room rate. Thisspecial rate is for one to four women in a room. For more informa-tion, or to make a room reservation, call their toll-free number at 1-866-447-7728.

Cunningham, incidentally, said she was sorry that the KingpinMillion Dollar Challenge had been postponed. “I hope the tourna-ment, which is good for bowling, is revitalized and held some timenext year,” she said. “It would be a win-win event for everyone.”

Evans and I never did get to tour the National Bowling Sta-dium. When we walked over to the stadium that Friday afternoon, all the doors were locked. Evans, who seems to know just abouteverything going on in bowling, says we didn’t miss much. “Mostof the improvements (at the stadium),” he said, “involves the lanesand the giant automatic scoring screens.”

So, we trekked back to the Circus Circus, where we took a flingat playing the ponies in the race book. Would you believe that Evans, who once handicapped horses for the Miami Herald, picked fivestraight winners? Amazing!

* * * *“Why did everybody love Eddie Elias?” That question has been

answered in a new biography, appropriately entitled Eddie Elias, written by Jane Richardson. It’s her eighth published book and herfourth biography.

Elias, of course, is noted as being “the father of professionalbowling.” He organized the Professional Bowlers Assn. in 1958and was responsible for landing the long-running Pro Bowlers Touron ABC-TV (now on ESPN).

A real go-getter and innovator, Elias, an Akron (Ohio) attorney, also was a well-known sports agent. In addition to representing probowlers, he managed auto racing, basketball, snd football star ath-letes and about two dozen golfers, including Fuzzy Zoeller and ChiChi Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who was close friends with Elias, wrotethe foreword for the biography.

Elias died in 1998 following what was described as a “disablingillness.” He was 69.

Jane Richardson, a tireless researcher, interviewed more than270 of Elias’ friends, family members and business associates. Theyall loved Eddie Elias, for they had nothing but praise and kind wordsto say about him.

This led to some redundancies in the book, as several of thoseinterviewed were quoted as saying that Elias was “bigger than life,”that he “lit up the room when he walked in,” or he “always pickedup the (lunch or dinner) check” for friends and relatives. Other thanthat, the book will be interesting for anyone who wants to know allabout Elias.

As Johnny Campos, the media book reviewer for Bowlers Jour-nal International, says: “If you are looking for a book that takesyou through the life and times of Eddie Elias…this is the book foryou.”

Eddie Elias (Thistle Publishing, $14.95 plus S&H), can be or-dered on the Internet at www.thistlepub.com.

* * * * *NOTES TO YOU: Now that the Pro Bowlers Tour has kicked

off the new season, it should bepointed out that the only oppor-tunity for Californians to watchthe pros in action will be at theinaugural Dick Weber Open, tobe held Jan. 10-15 at DaveOsborn’s Fountain Bowl, theplush 60-lane pin palace inFountain Valley…Speaking ofthe PBA, I winced when I heardESPN colorcaster RandyPedersen, during the recentMile High Classic, refer toPatrick Allen as “going forthree consecutive strikes in arow.” It grated on my nerves somuch that I thought I was goingto have a bloody hemorrhage. But I couldn’t afford one, sinceI’m not a rich millionaire…

The recent Bowling MediaTour was “wildly successful,”according to Tom Clark,USBC’s Director of Communi-cations. Even the Wall StreetJournal had a reporter on handfor the event, which featuredChris Barnes, Diandra Asbatyand Danny Wiseman. Wisemanwas a last-minute substitute forPete Weber, who couldn’t makeit. “Luckily,” Wiseman said, “Ilive only 1-1/2 hours away (inBaltimore), and I was able tosave the day by filling in forPetey. I was glad I could helpout in the sudden emergency, even though I had to go out ofmy way to do so”…

Here’s a belated postscriptregarding the Eddie Elias story:Chuck Pezzano, the Hall ofFame pin scribe and former PBAhistorian, was a close friend ofElias. Pezzano was the mainspeaker at this past summer’sdedication of the Edward G.Elias Bowling Center, locatedon the campus of the Universityof Akron, Elias’ alma mater.Pezzano says that contributions, large or small, are needed for thecenter’s upkeep and can be sentto the University of Akron, De-partment of Development, EliasBowling Center, Akron, Ohio44325-2603. “This is the kind ofgiving that grows our sport,”.

LAS VEGAS, NV— The World Series was over all too soon.Four and out. I didn’t have much of a rooting interest, maybeI gave the Houston Astros a bit more support because theycame from the National League...where they play “real”baseball...NO designated hitter, one of the most ridiculousthings ever dumped on any sport. Rumor has it, the AmericanLeague was given the idea by the USBC, back when it wasknown as the ABC.

I didn’t miss a pitch of the series because I tuned in towatch the best baseball players...the professional stars. I sa-vored every pitch, hit and play. I was watching great baseball.

The same goes for golf on TV as you view the stars asthey excel. If Tiger gets on TV on the weekend, the TV audi-ence soars...as much as 30 or 40 percent. People do tune into see the great professionals of any sport.

Then we have the geniuses running the PBA show! I watchthe telly to see the cream of the crop...on what I hope will bea condition that will truly test the ability of the finalists. Well, let’s be honest about this season: pretty much a replica oflast year. “Fling and flail” conditions are the norm...hurl theball hard, watch the Tinker Toy pins fly. If that isn’t boringenough, instead of four-games, we get three-games in anHOUR-AND-A-HALF show! Three! I can guarantee you, three-games can be competed in ONE-HOUR on TV, and both play-ers will be bowling the last frame or two at the same time. Mypartner Dick Holst and I produced 344-live shows over a 6 1/2-year period, back in the early ‘60’s, when strikes didn’t comein bunches thanks to lane conditions...and strikes do speedthings up. Our show was generally the top rated program inour Saturday time slot, even when against the PBA show for16-weeks! While the talent on both programs was compa-rable, it didn’t hurt when with a phone call I could find out whowon the PBA event, which was taped earlier in the day, I’dfrequently offer “congrats” over the air to winner early in ourshow. (They had a half-hour head start.) My partner wouldcringe when I did it.

So how does the current PBA program “fill” the excesstime since they only show 3-games? With some mangy “trickshot” crapola called the “Skill Challenge,” which is as excit-ing as watching paint fade. If the guys on the “Skills” thing areso good, why are they not on the “real” portion of the cham-pionship battle? We tune in to watch the best bowlers over-come a reasonably difficult condition. This season, it seemsthe lanes become easier each week. It becomes a situationin which “anyone can win”, “Tho’ tougher conditions bringsthe “cream to the top”.

When golf’s equipment becomes conducive to lowerscores, most courses dig a few more sand traps, slap in a fewextra trees, enlarge the lake, grow the rough higher and putthe holes on the toughest part of the green. Golf gets it!

The PBA gives it a “huh?” They can’t figure out why theyget such miserable TV ratings when more people bowl at leastonce a year than participate in any other sport. Their one“good” week last year was when half the nation was “snowedin” on a Sunday, and it was shovel or watch TV.

As our primary source of gaining new fans and bowlers, the PBA has deleted one-game and added the lovely “trickshot!” That’s like baseball making the batters stand on onefoot at the plate while holding the barrel end of the bat in the5th inning. Or making golfers lay on their belly and using theirputter like a cue stick on the 9th hole. Sheer stupidity. It hasbecome really easy to tune-out the bowling programs whenyou have turned in to watch ultimate players compete, only tohave this thing turned into a childish nightmare of throwing aball from or under a chair.

When switching to football on Sundays, other than TerrellOwens, football has no gimmicks. Maybe we should try it. Butthen, that may be too much of a mental strain for thedunderheads running the bowling show. The simple answerguys: Just make the championship match a two-game, total-pin set. Add that, delete the “Screwball Challenge”, delete thebimbo babe doing on-the-spot interviews...and maybe thosedismal rating numbers might start going upwards. they call it“REAL” bowling.

MOUNTAIN TIMEBy DICK STOEFFLER

Legends Of Bowlingby Don Cecil

NORWALK — Readers, thisis a short story with a bit of atwist. All about a slightly builtgentleman of 79 years of age,who has a brilliant record. Nota great name in the bowlingworld, but a guy that has madehis mark and still enjoys thegame.

Larry Roberts, who I haveknown for 55 years is unknownoutside of Cal Bowl and Del RioLanes. Earlier this year Larryracked up a very nice 722 three-game set at Cal. And competesweekly in the Baker League atDel Rio.

Remember the So. Calif.Travel League in the late1950’s? We traveled to 35 dif-ferent centers during a season.Larry averaged 202, second onlyto Max Gardens.

In the “Old Days”, there wasa tournament called “The Bowl-ing World” held at MadisonSquare Garden in New York.Larry won this event two yearsin a row. But the biggest pay-day was at the Peterson Classicin Chicago. $80,000 is big inany year!

His 300 games total 29. Allsanctioned. All bowled undersome what varied conditions. His legs aren’t what they usedto be, but the fire is still aglow.

See you on the lanes as soonas the Doctors give me a pace-maker.

Wow…. What a difference a week makes.NOT!!!!!!!!! After having a week to dissect the shortoil conditions and make all the appropriate ballchanges, very few bowlers improved from week 1. Infact, a lot of very competent bowlers bowled worse, but I’m not going to say whether it was operator erroror the lanes. Either way, the lanes won again and leadthis series 2 to 0. Gary Duran managed to shoot 269 ingame two on his way to a league and round high 633series, but he was the only bowler to break 600 for the2nd week in a row.

“A” division has a new leader as Team 26 sweptTeam 23 5 to 0. Jeff Carr 558 and Vayle Floria 543 ledthe way for Team 26 with help from Team 23’s DannyCobbs, who hobbled home with only one game overthe “blind 140” and 394. Freek Racing moved into a2nd place tie by getting 4 out of 5 from Tri Star Vend-ing. Paul Barraco 546 and Chris Makroglous 541 werehigh for the FREEKS, while Jon Brandon “IRON” ledTri Star with 548. GHC took a 3-2 win from LinderInsurance despite no one on the pair breaking 200.Team 15, behind the strong bowling of Gary Durantook 4 of 5 from Threadworks who were paced byLarry Hanken with 587. Ron Schmidt aided Team 15’sefforts by shooting a league 2nd best 597. Western Pa-cific swept Forest Lanes with Larry Galloway538 lead-ing the way. Forest Lanes was paced by Ed Regehr588, and held back by Art Calizo who only managed107/364. Jeff “Spins” Garrison 203/546 led Team 19to a 4-1 win over Prudential Real Estate who were ledby Maury Griffith 223/590, but hampered by DannyOntiveros 103/349. by Otha StubblefieldDOWNEY—Well, I didn’t

see an article this week, so I willtry again. To recap Del Rio, ourscoring leader was PresidentCrossley, who bowled 237, 215and 202 for an 833 series.

Next was the soft-spokenJohn Mc Cullin with 201 and224 for 805. Unfortunately, those were the only 800’s wehad. Again, there were problemsnegotiating the oil/less oilboundaries, so the washoutswere free-flowing!

I give two pieces of advice -watch where the ball is going thewhole time it is on the lane soyou can map where the ballshould and should not go, and ifthe ball is not hooking like crazy, you probably don’t need tothrow it that hard. Rant over, now on to the 700’s.

Brent Shern starts us off with203-217/765, followed by VPHawkins 763, Justin “Angre”Eubanks 210-201/750, andMikey Helferstay 222/704. Jer-emy had a 201, too. At Bowl-O-Drome, scoring was a bithigher. Rashad Sandridge re-turned with a vengeance and ledwith 229/846. He was followedby John Mc Cullin 244/822, andBrandon Pekins 223/800.

Shooting in the 7’s wereDarren Hawkins 205/758, Jeffdel Mar 214/756, Jasper White728, Dayton Crossley 719, Jus-tin Mc Cullin 215/709, JeremyGlover and Justin Eubanks 202/706, and Cory Koyanagi at 700.Our next session will be atGardena Bowl. Remember starttime is 1:30. See you there!

SEDYLT

by David GordonWHITTIER—Now we’re

catching up as two Sundays ago,the JAT Farm Club took on thelanes at AMF Friendly Hills. Wehad a little smaller than usualturnout with 28 bowlers takingpart, putting the cut for matchplay at 14 bowlers.

In the qualifying round wehad a few bright highlights toshare as Natalie Jimenez led theway at plus 6 with games of 222-244. Other highs came in fromBrandon Pekins 242, Eric Milne227-237, Joey Marino 237,Felicia Mara 231, TommyNeuzil 229 and Sadia Ward 220.The cut to advance showed upat minus 122.

In match play Pekins gave usthe tournament high score with265 and added a 227 to keepwithin the running. Neuzil hada 256 game, Marino 225 andWard another 220. Marino madea run for the finals with a 6 po-sition jump but ended up as thealternate.

The finals started off with 5thseed Neuzil (-80) taking on 4thseed Ward (-39) as Ward tookthis match 176-168. Ward thenfaced off with 3rd seed MichaelGaylor (-18) making his finals

JAT Farm Clubdebut. The veteran Ward tookno chance and put Michael away216-200. But then faced 2ndseed Pekins (+42) and in a lowscoring match, Pekins sat Warddown 169-144. Pekins nowfaced the top seed Jimenez(+112) who wanted this tourna-ment badly. Again, a low scor-ing and tight match finally endedwith Natalie’s second title 179-166. Congratulations Ms.Jimenez.

A quick note to the bowlers. The tournaments are bookedwith the centers outlining certaindeadlines such as the end ofqualifying or the entire tourna-ment. It is great that you get tocome out and have fun with yourfriends while competing insomething you enjoy. But youas tournament bowlers, muststay focus on the tournamentplay and your responsibilities tokeep the tournament on its timeschedule. Please help me keepour group on time and on track. If so, I won’t come off as such ameanie in future tournaments.

This coming Sunday, theJAT will visit WestminsterLanes. Check-in begins at 7:15AND BOWLING STARTSAROUND 8:00. Please planahead for traffic delays and beon time. Hope to see you allthere.
