MESSAGE FROM THE STATE VICE PRESIDENT

As I sit here thinking about what to write about this month, my mind wanders, and thoughts of our various member benefits come to mind. All of which should be bragged upon at some

point throughout the year, so why not now!

LIFE INSURANCE AND ANNUITIES

Some would say, Life Insurance is the most coveted member benefit of all (and I’d have to agree). To be there in faith, and financially, for a family who just lost a loved one is hard to trump. To this day, I’ve never delivered a check that was “too large” for the family to accept…

A Twist of Member Benefits…

BY Christopher Urban KJT State President

This notice is to inform you that Catholic Union of Texas, The KJT has discovered that it was the target of a cyberattack (unauthorized third-party access of the KJT’s computer browser). As part of our investigation, we notified necessary agencies to report the incident. We have taken this matter very seriously and regret any concern that this may cause.

On January 18, 2017, we discovered that there was nefarious browser activity on one of the local personal computers at the KJT office.

The perpetrator gained access over the internet by exploiting a hole in the company firewall and performing a brute force password attack (method of guessing a password using computer code). There is evidence of internet browsing based on the history files of the local pc and the perpetrator apparently installed some malware on the local pc. Intermittent browsing activity was found to go back as far as June 12, 2016.

However, there is no log or evidence that any member’s or applicant’s Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data or other confidential/private information was

compromised. The KJT member/applicant PII data and other confidential/private information is located on the local network on a separate server and there is no evidence that the perpetrator accessed any information on this local network.

Numerous steps have been taken to prevent this type of unauthorized access from happening again including:

1. Adjust firewall rules to allow access from very specific source IP addresses only

DIRECTOR OF MEDIA AND MARKETING

Hello to all!! It is so great to be a part of this

amazing organization! It has now been two months since I started here in the home office in La Grange, and I couldn’t be happier.

Church p icnics were a blast this year! You will frequently see me floating around church picnics taking

pictures and asking for society members so that I can capture our members in action. I want to show as much involvement that I can in our editorial. I feel like you all deserve recongizition for your hard work, so keep up the great job. I can’t wait to make my way around to every KJT member our there!

Once I was back in the

office, we hit the ground running with preparations for the KJT Summer Camp in which I am the Camp Director. This was my second year as camp director, so I had a better understanding of what to expect than I did last year. It was such a great time! We roasted s’mores, swam, swung from the high ropes, zipped lined, hit the

blob, caught a few fish, and had an amazing game of Capture the Flag using colored dust and water balloons. Check out our Facebook page to see some of the moments I was able to capture. I would like to personally thank all of my counselors who came out and spent the week with me. I couldn't have asked for a better set of counselors to be with on this adventure.

Now I ’m set t led back into the home office and my next project in line is to start focusing on society Facebook pages. If any of you are interested in starting up a Facebook page for your society, please give me a call here at the office, 979-968-5877.

At last, I want to thank everybody who has taken the time to welcome me here. Thank you to all the State

ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR REPORT

With limited space, I was unable to highlight some

of the great entertainment inside and outside under the pavilion at the Koache Klobase Festival back on June 10. It was

a pleasure to visit with Danny Zapletal, Michelle and David Slovak with Czech and Then Some, John and Mark Dujka with the Dujka brothers, and Kenneth with the Red Ravens. The jam session with these three bands was outstanding.

Moving on to State Family Day if you were not able to attend you missed out on one of the best Family Days. Beginning with registration, then a beautiful mass with Fr. Bob Knippenberg. A great thank you to all the officers, directors, office staff and all the spouses whose hard work made this a great day. Another

big thank you to Director Ray Pokorney and his team for the delicious bar-b-que. This year there was live entertainment with Chris Rybak and his band. He knows how to energize people with his music and entertainment. He even made a live video on Facebook. Look for them next year.

On Friday July 27th I was invited to La Marque by the Galveston County Czech Heritage Society for a reception honoring the visiting Deacons from the Czech Republic. Heritage Society President Barbara Winborn welcomed

everybody and proceed with introducing Fr. Paul Chovanec who has a key role in organizing

the yearly visits. This year we had the pleasure of meeting Jan Jurečka of the Diocese of Ostrav-Opava, Vojtěch Zahrádka of the Diocese of

Brno and Jiří Šůstek of the Diocese of Olomouc. Each Deacon was asked to give a brief history of their home of residence, family, and why they chose to become a priest. We all enjoyed bar-b-que with all the trimmings and lots of great desserts. Thanks again to the Galveston County Czech Heritage Society for their hospitality.

A l w a y s r e m e m b e r membership should be a top priority for all societies.

KJT State Spiritual Director

Labor Day is observed in the U.S. this year on September

4. For most of us, it “officially” marks the end of summer vacation season and is observed, ironically, by a day off work!

But, for the Christian, Labor Day is more than just a day off work. For the Christian, "work" is an invitation to participate in God’s extraordinary plan for the salvation of the world, if it is joined to Jesus Christ. No matter what we are doing we are, as St. Paul wrote, to "do it as unto the Lord" (see Col 3). Our work then changes "the world", both within us and around us. This means all work - not just the so called "spiritual" or "religious" stuff, has redemptive value. Remember, God Incarnate did not just do the "spiritual" stuff. All human work sanctifies and changes the world which God still loves. St. Paul captured the hope of all creation when, in the eighth chapter of his letter

to the Romans he reminded us that all of creation "groans" for the full revelation of the sons and daughters of God. We can have a new relationship with the entire created order—beginning now—because we live in the Son, through whom and for whom it was all created and is being re-created.

In his encyclical entitled “On Human Work” (1981), Pope St. John Paul II spoke of the “gospel of work.” This insight from Pope St. John Paul II is important for us to consider on Labor Day. There truly is a "gospel of work." Let us renew our hearts and minds and live this gospel of work in the way in which we engage in labor.

In His Ascension, Jesus did not leave us orphans. Rather, He lives in us and we now live in Him, through the Holy Spirit. He has capacitated us to live differently, NOW, through the Grace poured out through the Holy Spirit and mediated to us in the Sacraments. We can live this "Gospel of Work" in an age which desperately needs a new living witness of its dignity, meaning and true value.

Happy Labor Day!

Ok, so we must admit that we didn’t pick the coolest day to hold our

Annual KJT State Family Day, as the temperature spiked in at 98 degrees, but the attendance count showed our members didn’t mind the heat. With about 250 members in attendance, we can say that this was a successful

picnic for our organization. We began our celebration with

Holy Mass offered by Father Bob Knippenburg, our Spiritual Director.

Following Holy Mass, we all joined in for one of our most delicious BBQ meals ever made. Ray and Shirley Pokorney, Jerod and Celeste Oliver, Clem and Grace Korenek, Robert and Georgie Nors, Michael Kramer, and Jim Caballero are all to thank for that delicious meal. So, if they happen to

be in your area, please take the time to stop and shake their hand because they did an outstanding job on the meal preparation. Not to mention, they were the first ones there and the last ones to leave, much credit is due to them all.

T h e c h i l d r e n e n t e r t a i n e d themselves with the waterslide, character drawing, and washer games that were available. They had a game to guess the amount of candy in three different jars where three young members could share their winnings with others. No doubt that new friendships were made with that. The winners were Grace Eschenburg- #29 Freydek, Kate Hyzak- #112 Austin, and Wyatt Nanaz- #16 Wallis.

C h r i s R y b a k s t r u n g o u t his accordion and played great music for everyone to enjoy. We helped celebrate the 51st Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Jim and Leona Brzozowski of KJT Society #34 Nada with an anniversary dance. Chris and his family joined in with the festivities and sang a few numbers themselves. At one point,

Chris Rybak had the entire crowd singing along to one of the crowds favorite hits; A Ja Sam

A great time was had by all. Thank you to everybody who helped with preparation and clean-up. Thank you to those that helped serve food and take in registrations. This entire event wouldn’t have been such a success

without the help of everybody who pitched in.

Thank you

Stephanie PrihodaEditor

There are many traditions passed down throughout time. Ideas and events

have long been handed down from one generation to another because the idea of keeping the past alive is what brings a family together. From family reunions to seasonal vacation trips, to holiday traditions, families find ways to be together and connect with their past.

For one family, making

molasses is just that. James and Carolyn (Wick)

Prihoda, and their family in High Hill, just north west of Schulenburg, Texas, carry on a tradition like no other. Every year in the spring, James and his boys begin the process of making homemade molasses by planting anywhere from 1-2 acres of sorghum cane on their land. Once planted, mother nature then determines on how much molasses they will harvest in August. If there is a lot of rain, the cane will grow thicker and harvest more juice when pressed. If it’s a dry summer, which is more

common than most, well then, the family time spent together is worth every drop they will manage to squeeze out. Every year is different. Some years, the Prihoda’s will manage to press out 15 to 20 gallons of molasses, while others times, they will be lucky to get enough to hand out to everybody who was there to help. Either way, being together and learning this long-living tradition is well worth more than it’s weigh in gold, or molasses for that matter.

There’s a sense of reliving the past when harvesting sorghum cane. There is no electricity used. Only an old antique Farmall C tractor running a conveyor belt works the cane press, while what used to be a man-built fire, now propane, burns through their homemade fire pit. Everything else from stripping the cane down in the pasture to loading it up on the trailer is where the memories are made, and done by hand. It requires a few hands and some strong backs to move the crop around, but that’s when having a large family, and a few extra friends, comes in handy. With a family as large as James and Carolyn’s, there are many members there to help and to

pass down this sweet tradition too.

However, this process is so much more than the sweet syrup they cook it down to. It’s more about the memories built around the cane press and boiling pans. Families from all around, both near and far, have gathered around the Prihoda/Wick Farm for centuries to witness, and later enjoy, this antique way of living. Guests have come from as far as Fredricksburg and Blanco, Texas to watch and take part in making homemade molasses. Families in the past have brought their own harvested cane, and because finding this antique equipment is hard to come across, the Prihoda’s have welcomingly pressed cane and cooked down molasses for other families to enjoy. Of course, the visitors must help along with the process, but when it’s quality time you are spending

with family and friends, time is only of the essence.

The Prihoda family, along w i t h v o l u n t e e r s , s p e n d anywhere from three to five days from start to finish on this molasses making process, but for this once-a-year event, there are seldom any complaints. You will only hear families catching up and telling stories, followed by laughter. Lessons from the adults teaching their children how to process what they hope will be the future for them, and memories from Grandpa about how the process was done when he was a boy.

Passing down the work and responsibility of keeping a family tradition is a lot to ask of a family, especially when the work that’s being asked of is hard labor.

For over 30 years now, The Prihoda family has enjoyed going through the process with their children, and now

their grandchildren. However, there’s always a sweet reward for everybody in attendance. Rather i t ’ s a homemade molasses cookie that Grandma baked or a jar of your own molasses, the memories that this family makes each year last much longer than the syrup itself.

James and Carolyn Prihoda, along with all their children, are members of KJT Society #129, Schulenburg.

Members of the Prihoda family work together to strip and cut down the cane while it stands in the field.

Driving 50 miles one way for something you love

more than anything, doesn’t seem like that long of a trip at all. For this one particular high school student, this frequent drive is only one obstacle he must jump to accomplish the

goals he has set for himself in the hockey rink.

When we talk about Texas sports, the last sport we would mention; let alone hear about, is hockey. However, for Cole Seevers of Waxahachie, it’s his whole world. Cole earned

the 2017 AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League Goaltender of the Year, as well as Silver Division Varsity City Championship award with Mansfield High School.

With the hockey sport is slowly making its mark in Texas, north Texas schools are getting a head start on the sport. While it has yet to exceed Texas football and the attention it brings to school districts, Cole and his teammates are making a run on the ice of making history in this newly found high school sport here in this hot state. There are 40 teams now in this league; however, the closest rink to practice on is every bit of 50 miles away in one direction.

“When I started, I was just going for the JV team,”

Cole explained, “All I wanted to do was step it up and be a good varsity goaltender.” This wasn’t an easy task

with the nearest rink 50 miles away. Finding players that would either match or challenge his playing skills was the real struggle.

In addition to the drive for adequate ice time and teammates to challenge, Cole Seevers has still been able to

maintain a high-grade average in the classroom academically.

Cole will be a senior this year Waxahachie High School and is the son of Matt and Melissa (Prachyl) Seevers, and grandson of Al and Linda Prachyl, all who are members of the KJT Society #35, Ennis.

The members of the Catholic Union of Texas, the KJT, wish to express their sincere and heartfelt sympathy to the families and friends

of the departed members who are listed above. May their souls rest in peace.

Attending rural schools as a youngster, five-year-old Johnnie would come home from school asking his parents “Mluvete’ Anglisky?” which means “Do ya’ll know English?” His momma replied in English, “Yes, we do, but we wanted you to learn Czech!” The Czech language would become an

asset to Johnnie throughout his life as he had the gift of being able to communicate with the old-time Czechs in the community – making an endearing connection with the people.

Growing up on a farm, just east of Ennis, his family attended many of the local church picnics and dances usually held at the KJT Hall or National Hall (now the SPJST Lodge #25) giving his Czech and polka culture a strong foundation. Attending St. John Catholic School, he became proficient on the clarinet and drums, understanding the musicians side of the music. He would leave the fields at noon so he could listen to polka music broadcast from San Antonio and would stay up late each night to catch a

midnight program coming out of St. Louis, Missouri. On weekends he listened to music by the Kubin’s and other local bands broadcast from Corsicana. When he was fifteen he got his driver’s license and began going to the KJT Hall to the polka dances on his own. These excursions and the radio helped build his love of polka music.

After graduating from St. John High School in 1950, the Army calls-up Johnnie I. and sends him to Germany. In 1955, Johnnie leaves his friends’ wedding reception at the KJT hall with Margaret (Martinek), a girl he had met at a 4th of July celebration at the National Hall and proposed to her in front of St. John Church. She accepted and they have been “polka dancing”

ever since. He married his sweetheart in 1956 and along came their four girls: Rita, Marlene, Laure and Allis.

In May of 1964, Johnnie’s polka show went on the air. However, the show was prerecorded, and this bothered him. He desired to be more connected with the listeners, so after a short while, he signed on the air, live in the studio, with an all request show which continued in that format for over forty- eight years. He always considered his program “a show produced by his listeners”.

Johnnie was a member of all the fraternal lodges in Ennis KJT for 76 years, SOKOL for 56 years, American Legion for 61 years, and SPJST and RVOS for 61 years. In the mid 60’s Johnnie began selling SPJST

and RVOS insurance and also held the office of president of each organization. He was President of SPJST Lodge #25 when the hall burned to the ground and was instrumental in rebuilding the lodge.

Johnnie was proud of his Czech heritage; he was an avid lover of polka music and a fraternalist at heart. He enjoyed seeing people happy, loved a good joke, a good cold beer “dobre zima pivo” and a good bargain. But more than anything, he loved his family; his sweetheart Margaret, his “pretty grandmas”, his “pretty girls”, and his “mali sivak” grandsons.

Ending his polka show each Sunday with “S Panem Bohem, a na shledanou” takes on a new meaning now as Johnnie makes his final “sign off”. In English… “Goodbye & God be with you until we meet Again.”

“S Panem Bohem, a na Shledanou”(Goodbye & God be with you until we meet again.)
