The students have once again excelled in academics by grabbing VTU Ranks. Dimple Reeshel Lobo secured First Rank in MBA with four Gold medals and brought laurels to Sahyadri. The placement activities have been the probable highlight of the institution with good hiring by Infosys, TCS,,IBM, Cognizant , SAP Labs etc. in the first half of the year.

The Faculty and Research team of Sahyadri is committed to maintain a high standard of research integrity that has always been a characteristic which represents its growth. The research team was able to get funds from various funding agencies for their high end research.

Sahyadri organized a national level Aero Modelling Competition “Aerophilia 2019”. Another flagship event of the year was Tedx-SCEM, an all student managed event which drew many appreciations.

Students of Sahyadri College of Engineering participated in the International Competition such as SAE Aero Design in United States of America. Students of Sahyadri Motor Sports participated in International series of Karting and prepared to participate in a national level student version of the Formula car race –SAE SUPRA 2020. The students also participated and won prizes in numerous national and international technical events conducted by various premiere organizations.

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management has gone through seasons of greatness and challenges in order to provide professional and high quality education through its originality of conception, excellence of visual presentation and commitment to accuracy. Pertinently, Sahyadri has been acknowledged with numerous accolades from various other institutions, enterprises and well wishers.

Sahyadri students have continued their winning ways with extensive achievements in athletics, volleyball, throw-ball, Chess, Power lifting tournaments and other events. This year also Sahyadri athletic team emerged Champions in VTU Athletic Meet both in Men and Women section and also overall champions in VTU Athletics for the seventh time.

The current issue of this newsletter will take you through the outstanding achievements and activities of the last six months of the odd semester.

Sahyadri Start-ups and Industries have garnered more awards and recognitions with their exemplary accomplishments.

Thus the activity that has been highlighted in the Newsletter itself is the mirror for the stakeholders. Various events organized, interaction of students with important Industry, society and academia leaders on a regular basis provides a clear direction for the students in setting their goals and moving towards realizing the same. It is a reflection of the college initiation in the overall growth of the students. The institution, with a committed and driven staff headed by the very able Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman has been a subject to motivation for staff and students alike, to achieve excellence in all fields.

The Achievers of 2018-19 in extracurricular activities like

Sports, Cultural, and Scouts & Guides were felicitated on this

auspicious occasion.

In his address, Mr. Ashith expressed how privileged he felt to be

invited to this special occasion at Sahyadri. He appreciated the

celebration at a grand scale and also the huge gathering of

students and faculty. He shared his perspective of how he looks

at Independent India in 3 stages – 1947, 1991-92 and the

current period of Advancement in Technology and Business and

how India is growing economically. He urged students to follow

their passion, enhance their networking capability and be part

of the economic growth of India.

Tree planting has been under taken by both staff and student in

a big way in the campus on this occasion to spread the message

of Swaccha Parisara, Swaccha Usiru.

The celebration of 73rd Independence Day was viewed with

great patriotism and joy by the staff and students of Sahyadri.

Chief Guest of the event Mr. Ashith B Hegde, Managing Director

– Arkieva Asia Pacific, hoisted the National Flag. Immediately

thereafter, all students, staff and faculty who had gathered,

stood to attention and sang the National Anthem with a sense

of oneness. This was followed by the singing of the National

Song ‘Vande Mataram’, which instilled the essence ‘Unity is

Strength’. The Student Council of Sahyadri was then introduced

to the Guest.

Prof. Nagabhushan Director of IIIT-Allahabad visits Sahyadri

Whi le speak ing to the facu l ty, Dr.

Nagabhushan addressed the flaws in present

education system and acknowledged the

transformation to be brought in the

Engineering education. He also re-iterated that

the attitude of teachers towards the students

should change in terms of assessment

techniques. He illustrated the role of a teacher and insisted on

quality teaching with continuous freedom in learning.

Nagabhushan P, Director of Indian Institute of Information

Technology-Allahabad visited Sahyadri. On moving around the

campus and visiting the departments and the

in-house companies and start-ups, he

appreciated the initiatives to strengthen

Industry Connect in the campus.

Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt – SSTH 2019

Sixth Edition of Sahyadri Science Talent Hunt (SSTH) - 2019

was held with a mission to promote innovation and

entrepreneurship in the Dakshina Kannada region. SSTH is

an initiative of the young creative minds in line with 'Start-

up India Mission’. During the concluding ceremony, Mr. Manjunath Bhandary

expressed how impressed he was with the social impact

projects exhibited by the students. He said the solutions to

the social concerns are in the hands of these children and

selected projects will be hand-held at Sahyadri level and

beyond. He further stated that SSTH Projects were the seed

to a Big Tree yielding fruits for all. Participants came

forward to share their opinion on the daylong event and

expressed how fortunate they felt to be a part of this event.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Prashanth Prakash, Co-

Founder- Erasmic and Founding Partner- Accel India. In his

inaugural speech, he expressed how delighted he was to be

part of this gigantic scientific event where young and

budding minds are given an opportunity to innovate on

ideas and exhibit their talent. It is a path-breaking

programme for future innovators at a school level, he

stated. He called them next-gen or future innovators. Mr.

Prakash was optimistic that these students will move on to

be future scientists and innovators.

Mr. Bharath Shetty while addressing the gathering

appreciated the passion of Mr. Manjunath Bhandary in the

field of education. He acclaimed that Sahyadri is the Best

Engineering College he has ever visited.

Be With Engineering – A Prelude to SSTH conducted at Sahyadri

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman facilitated a session on

‘Thinking Big and Setting your Goals High.

On Day One various activities were held for the students under

the guidance of mentors. They were briefed about the various

initiatives of the college. A Workshop was also conducted in the

Aptitude lab on Electronics & App Development. Day One was

concluded with a cultural extrvaganza. Day Two started with a

Yoga session and Air Show. This was followed by a mini

Workshop on Software Challenges by Mr. Aakash from SOSC.

As a prelude to The Sixth Edition of SSTH-2019 the Two-Day

Makers Event “Be with Engineering” was held. In the course of

these two days, the participants got an opportunity to interact

with entrepreneurs and widen their social network and work in

the launch pads and labs.

Sahyadri Bags VTU First Rank in MBA; Four Gold Medals and 3 other Ranks

Ms.Misbah Jamal who is a MBA in Finance

has secured 5th Rank in VTU Examinations

for the Academic Year 2018-19. She is the

daughter of Mr. Sheikh Jamal and Mrs.

Gulshan. She says “I always believed in

giving my 100% without thinking about the

outcome. So even if I fail I will have no

regrets. I have the same mind-set when it

comes to my academics and I believe my

rank is the reward for my hard work and

patience.”

“The first thing that strikes my mind about

Sahyadri College” says Anuradha as she

relates her success story, “is the Green

Lushes and Lawns surrounded by flowing

water that has always inspired me to be active and keep

moving in life through all obstacles. As the saying goes ‘You are

what you are surrounded by’, this is a perfect example for my

inspiration.”

be obstacles, there will be doubters, and there will be

mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits”, says

DimpleReeshel Lobo who is the daughter of Denis Lobo and

Late Rosa Lobo. Dimple is currently working at KPMG, GDC, Kochi.

Ms.Radhika Nayak has secured 2nd rank in

VTU examinations for the Academic Year

2018-19in M.Tech (Structural Engineering).

She is the daughter of Puttur Pandurang

Nayak & Vijaya P Nayak. She is the

recipient of Bhartiya Scouts and Guides

State Award. Being a multitalented

student, she has outshined in the field of

sports and music, apart from academics.

While thanking Sahyadri management and

her teachers for their encouragement throughout this

journey, she says “Sahyadri Library inspired methe most in

campus and I would consider it as my 'Second Home'.”

The Chief Guest of the event was Cdr T R A Narayanan of

Indian Navy. He is also a Prime Member of Aeromodelling

Association of India. Mr. Maneesh Saxena and Mr.

Akhileshwar Reddy, Deputy Directors of Industry Interface

under Satnav program by ISRO were also present during

the occasion. Mr. Ashwin L Shetty who was the Composite

Manager at Airbus Helicopters in China also spoke on the

occasion.There were Air Shows by Mr. Abhay Pawar and

Mr. Ragavendra B S, both of whom are professional RC

flyers. The schedule for Day One of Aerophilia had technical

events like Aeromodelling, Drone Race, Water Rocket and

Tug of Bots and also the Hackathon conducted by ISRO

Scientists. Fun events like Treasure Hunt, Rubik’s Cube and

CS GO were also held. The Day concluded with cultural

programme which included a concert by Team Martians

and a Stand-up comedy by Mr. Mandar Bhide from Bingo

Comedy Adda.

Aerophilia 2019, a two-day National Level Aeromodelling

Competition took off on 20th Sep’19 in the campus. The

event has its primary goal to implant ideas of

Aeromodelling and aerospace in young minds and to

encourage young talents to explore more. Aerophilia

consists of 20 different events with exciting cash prizes.

About 1,000 students from various schools and colleges

across India including IITs and NITs have participated in the

programme. The main attraction of the event this year is

the Hackathon conducted by ISRO exclusively at Aerophilia

on the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) chip.

The distinguished personalities from medical, innovation and

agriculture domains, have spread their noble ideas to the

audiences.

new trends and developments in

the economy

• Dr. Rohan Chandragatti, Senior Consultant-Dept. of

Oncology, Mangalore Institute of Oncology, spoke on the

unpredictable nature of Cancer and how one can cope up with

this dreadful disease.

• Ms. Karishma Arora, All India CBSC

Topper and a Classical Dancer, entertained the audience by

demonstrating the Power of Dance and its benefits to the

individuals.

• Ms. Dhanya Ravi, popularly

known as the “Glass Woman” with

more than 300 fractures in her body,

inspired the audience with her

remarkable stories on how she

overcame all odds to lead a happy

life.

• Brigadier I N Rai, Army Veteran, with his talk on “A soldier you

don’t know” filled the audience with emotions of pride, joy and

at the same time with sadness quoting the stories of the

unsung heroes of India who sacrifice

everything to the one thing –

Motherland.

Sahyadri hosted its very first TEDxSCEM under the banner of

TEDx. The programme had a combination of 8 speakers and

various cultural performances. It saw participation from 70

enthusiasts between age group of 16 to 85. TED Talks comes

with the slogan "ideas worth spreading."

‘Sahyadri 10K Run Mangaluru’ creates History

The unique Palindrome 02-02-2020 created history, as

thousands of Runners from all quarters converged at

Mangala Stadium for the Sahyadri 10K Run. Sahyadri 10K

Run was organised by Dakshina Kannada Athletic

Association- DKAA in line with Fit India Movement, with the

mission of “Swaccha - Parisara - Hasiru–Usiru” and

promoted by Bhandary Foundation. The Title Sponsor was

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. Mr.

Gurukiran, Music Director, Film Industry was the Brand

Ambassador. As the dawn broke into gleams of sunshine,

beckoning to people from all walks of life, the various

categories of Sahyadri 10K Run were flagged off for an

amazing start.

5K - Competitive Run for Men & Women: Around 720

Runners between 16 to 25 years of age from various

colleges participated with exclusive determination.

5K - Maza with Healthy Run - Open to all: Much happiness

was seen at this Run, as an astounding 7,000 participants

including 50+ Institutions, Organizations and General

Public participated.

Eminent personalities from various spheres enlivened the

Eventful Morning, with their very presence.

Challenge Run - 10K - Men & Women: This comprised of 3

sub-categories and a total of 410 Runners including

students and professionals from different fields and locals

participated.

Future Run - 2K for Students - Boys & Girls: The total

number of Runners who participated with zeal were

around 1500 (Boys & Girls) from 70+ schools in and around

Mangaluru and parts of Karnataka.

BOOTCAMP organized at Sahyadri

The program was inaugurated by Karnataka Startup Cell

Representatives Mr. Abrar Ahmed & Mr Vishnu Nagaraj. Mr.

Abrar Ahmed, in his speech, gave an insight into the Boot Camp

and a brief about Startup Karnataka, its policies and schemes.

The Boot Camp consisted of different sessions on Ideation,

Product Design, Marketing & Development, Customer

Engagement, Business Model Making and creating a Pitch

Deck. Mr Raghav Shetty from RDL Technologies delivered a

mentor talk about his startup journey and success story.

A workshop on Entrepreneurship titled “E-Step Boot Camp”

was conducted by Karnataka Innovation & Technology Society

in association with Startup Karnataka, NAIN and Sahyadri

College of Engineering & Management.

Foundation addressed the students on "Focus".

Dr. Rajesha S, Dean-Academics explained about Academic

process and policies followed in the institution. Dr.

education and importance of industry-Institute connect and

internship. Prof. Sudheer Shetty, Dean-Examination, explained

about VTU Examination and Internal Assessment regulations.

& President of Sahyadri Toastmaster Club explained to the

students about the toastmaster’s club at Sahyadri. Prof. Akhaya

Kumari Shetty took up a session on ‘Life Skills’. Mr. Ankith S

Kumar, Student Counsellor, conducted a session on Yoga &

Dance Movement Therapy. Prof. Shankarayya Shastri facilitated

a session on Global Ethics.

Dr. Jnaneshwar Nayak, Vice president of Bharath Swabhiman

/Patanjali Yoga Samithi addressed about the importance of

Yoga. He engaged the students in practicing meditation,

demonstration of Asanas and Pranayama.

Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Dean of MSW, School of Social Work,

Roshni Nilaya-Mangaluru, also a child, adolescent and youth

mental health professional addressed the students on the topic

"Towards the Healthy Mind".

Induction Programme for Engineering Batch 2019

Industrial Expert from Ada Inc, Canada visits SahyadriMr Royal Sequeira, of Ada Inc Canada visited Sahyadri and

addressed the ACM Chapter of Sahyadri. He discussed about

the possible future collaborations with ACM Sahyadri Chapter.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Sahyadri Student

Chapter is a student-driven enthusiastic community that aims

to elevate the skills and interests of its members and achieve

overall development. Mr Sequeira is a mentoring around 150+

students across India. He was mesmerized by visiting the

Centre of Excellence, Machine Learning and Cybersecurity and

various other initiatives of Sahyadri during the visit.

‘Sahyadri 10K Run Mangaluru’ creates History

The unique Palindrome 02-02-2020 created history, as

thousands of Runners from all quarters converged at

Mangala Stadium for the Sahyadri 10K Run. Sahyadri 10K

Run was organised by Dakshina Kannada Athletic

Association- DKAA in line with Fit India Movement, with the

mission of “Swaccha - Parisara - Hasiru–Usiru” and

promoted by Bhandary Foundation. The Title Sponsor was

Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. Mr.

Gurukiran, Music Director, Film Industry was the Brand

Ambassador. As the dawn broke into gleams of sunshine,

beckoning to people from all walks of life, the various

categories of Sahyadri 10K Run were flagged off for an

amazing start.

5K - Competitive Run for Men & Women: Around 720

Runners between 16 to 25 years of age from various

colleges participated with exclusive determination.

5K - Maza with Healthy Run - Open to all: Much happiness

was seen at this Run, as an astounding 7,000 participants

including 50+ Institutions, Organizations and General

Public participated.

Eminent personalities from various spheres enlivened the

Eventful Morning, with their very presence.

Challenge Run - 10K - Men & Women: This comprised of 3

sub-categories and a total of 410 Runners including

students and professionals from different fields and locals

participated.

Future Run - 2K for Students - Boys & Girls: The total

number of Runners who participated with zeal were

around 1500 (Boys & Girls) from 70+ schools in and around

Mangaluru and parts of Karnataka.

The Workshop was headed by Senior ISRO Scientist - Ms.

Kanika Jakhar, who explained briefly about NavIC

(Navigation with Indian Constellation) including data

transfers through Bluetooth, USB Cable and through GPRS.

Another session was handled by Mr. Sachin Ganesh (CEO

of DSI) and team. They briefed about practical use of these

devices and use of MIT App Inventor. Having attended

these workshops and the sessions, participants worked on

projects implementing the NavIC devices provided by ISRO.

The participants enthusiastically started working on their

own idea which required the choice of devices provided

and implementing it using an application or a website.

The 36 hours ISRO Hackathon was brought to a successful

end with the pitching session by 20 teams coming from

various colleges.

The MoU was signed by Dr. R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal and

Dr. Anush Bekal, In-charge, Industry Connect with Mr.

Dhruvraaj Singh Rajvee, Business Expansions Head and Mr.

Manan Shah, Entrepreneurship Exchanges In-charge at AIESEC -

C/o Manipal Academy of Higher Education, MIT campus,

Manipal.

With the prime objective of encouraging International

Internships for students, Sahyadri has signed a Memorandum

of Understanding (MOU) with AIESEC INDIA providing a global

platform for young people to explore and develop leadership

potential. The MoU formalizes the mutual interaction and

strengthens the relationship between Sahyadri and AIESEC by

providing students with the opportunity to live a shared

responsibility for the world and equip them with the tools to

shape it for a better future. It shall also, focus on creating a

youth movement to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development

Goals by the year 2030.

Sahyadri Signs MoU with KCCI for Industry-Academia Collaboration

This MoU would help Sahyadri in terms of internships for

students, seek consultancy services from the faculty,

conducting guest lectures, certification programmes,

workshops etc.

The MoU was signed by Dr R Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal and

Mr Isaac Vas, President of KCCI. Ms Athmika Amin, Director of

KCCI and Chairperson of Women Entrepreneurship Committee,

Mr P B Mudasser, Director of KCCI and Ms Salome Deepa Lobo,

Chairperson Industry Academia Interface, Sub-committee

(KCCI), graced the occasion by their presence.

With the prime objective of having industry-institute interface,

Sahyadri has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

with Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI),

Mangaluru. The students of Sahyadri who seek a rewarding

career in engineering and management or to become

entrepreneurs, shall get hands-on information and knowledge

through this mutual understanding.

Officials from Karnataka Information Technology Service visit Sahyadri Mr. Prashanth Kumar, IAS, Managing Director, KITS along with

Dr. Basanthi B.S., General Manager, KAS, visited Sahyadri. They

visited various innovative labs, in-house start-ups and student-

centric initiatives of Sahyadri. They assessed NAIN projects and

were happy with the projects presented by students at NAIN

centre. At the end of their visit, they had nothing but deep

admiration for the campus and lauded the chairman on his

excellent commitment in building an institute of such a magnitude.

IEEE Student Branch of Sahyadri organized a Tech-Talk The IEEE Student Branch of Sahyadri organized a Technical Talk . Prof. Basavaraj Talawar, Professor, NIT Surathkal spoke on

the topic “Disruptive Technologies in Computing Systems”. He gave glimpses on how there will be massive changes in

Computer Architecture which could disrupt the way in which computing is done. Around 180 students from Computer

Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication and Information Science &Engineering participated in this Talk.

Hacktoberfest HackNight - An event hosted at Sahyadri

In order to celebrate the month of Open Source with

Hacktoberfest, Sahyadri Open Source Community

(SOSC) in association with Aptra Technologies Pvt Ltd

hosted the event Hacktoberfest HackNight at

Sahyadri. Prof. Prashanth Dudella, SPOC Coordinator-

Smart India Hackathon, and Ms. Navya Bhat,

Chairperson–SOSC, were also present.

Sahyadri Open Source Community (SOSC) is a

community driven by tech enthusiasts and open-

source contributors, to help young students to be part

of the Open-source Ecosystem by providing training

and skill development. I The main event started off with

a workshop followed by an 18-hour Hackathon

wherein more than 120 students got together as teams

and worked on projects under various real life problem

statements given by organizations. The projects were

then open sourced through GitHub paving way for new

open source contributors to be born. Opportunity was

provided to the participants to solve problem

statement and get Internship in Aptra.

“Know your Rights”. Ms

Anmol Kohli, ITC Trainer, was

the Resource Person. She

discussed various real cases that have brought about changes

in the legal system in India. She spoke about the right of

individuals and the laws that are in place to protect those

rights. She also explained about workplace harassment, gender

equality laws, cyber-crimes and laws related to it. Around 500

students took part in the workshop.

First Year Engineering Students participate and achieve in Technical Fests at Premier Institutes

In a series of Technical Fests at various Premier Institutions that the first year engineering students participated during Sept,

Oct, Nov’19, our students achieved places and made name by competing with students of different engineering colleges.

Here is the summary of their achievements:

Roboveda - Srinidhi Institute of Science & Technology, Hyderabad

Techsparda - National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra

A total of 25 First Year Engineering students from ‘Clan

Samyama’ participated in Roboveda, a Technical Fest held

at Srinidhi Institute of Science & Technology, Hyderabad.

They were mentored by Mr. Vinyas from Second Year

Mechanical Engineering.

The students participated in events such as Manual

Robots, Robo Soccer and Robo Race and won 3rd place in

Gati (Death Race) and emerged as Top 8 in Robo Soccer.

First Year Engineering students of 'Clan Samagratha',

around 22 in number, participated in Techsparda, a

Technical Fest held at National Institute of Technology,

Kurukshetra. Mentored by Mr. Deexith of Second Year

Mechanical Engineering, the students participated in Maze

up, Robo Soccer, Water Rocket, and RC bots

Tathva'19 - National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kozhikode, Kerala

graVITas - Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) , Tamilnadu

Around 21 First Year Engineering students of 'Clan Mudita'

participated in graVITas'19, a Technical Fest held at Vellore

Institute of Technology, Vellore, Tamilnadu. They were

mentored by Mr. Sumanth from Second year Information

Science & Communication Engineering and Mr. Akhilesh from

Second year Computer Science & Engineering.

Various events such as Aeromodelling, Navigation Bootcamp,

De-melt, Chem-e-light, Suspendo, Chem-e-car and Auto

painting were organised. The team won prizes in the following

events:

• First place in Chem-e-car

• Fifth place in Chem-e-light

• First place in De-Melt

• Second place in Aeromodelling

• Fourth place in Chem-e-fountain

Engineer’19 - National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal

The students participated in events like Robo Quest and Chem-

e-car and won 4th place in Chem-e-car and 8th place in Robo

Quest.

Eighteen students of ‘Clan Rachit’, participated in Amalthea’19,

an annual Tech Summit organized by Indian Institute of

Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The team was

mentored by Mr. K. Samarth N. Kamath, a student of Second

Year Computer Science & Engineering.

‘Amalthea 19’ - Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT), Gujarat

The Team participated in events such as Light of Seven, Bot,

Hockey, Trailblazer and Perfect Machine and secured 3rd & 4th

places in Light Follower, and 4th place in Robo Hockey.

Eighteen students from Clan Udbhav, participated in

Engineer’19, Technical Fest organized by National Institute of

Technology-Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal. The team was

mentored by Kaushik and Renil from Second year Computer

Science & Engineering.

Atmos - Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani, Hyderabad

The team participated in events such as Law Follower, I-

Navigator and Sequential Co-op and was qualified for second

round in I-navigate.

Around 21 students of ‘Clan Udgam’ participated in Atmos, an

annual Techno-Management Fest, organized by Birla Institute

of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani, Hyderabad. They were

mentored by Mr. Kiran Kumar & Mr. Vinay Kumar from Second

Year Electronics & Communication Engineering.

First Year Engineering Students participate and achieve in Technical Fests at Premier Institutes

In a series of Technical Fests at various Premier Institutions that the first year engineering students participated during Sept,

Oct, Nov’19, our students achieved places and made name by competing with students of different engineering colleges.

Here is the summary of their achievements:

Roboveda - Srinidhi Institute of Science & Technology, Hyderabad

Techsparda - National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra

A total of 25 First Year Engineering students from ‘Clan

Samyama’ participated in Roboveda, a Technical Fest held

at Srinidhi Institute of Science & Technology, Hyderabad.

They were mentored by Mr. Vinyas from Second Year


The students participated in events such as Manual

Robots, Robo Soccer and Robo Race and won 3rd place in

Gati (Death Race) and emerged as Top 8 in Robo Soccer.

First Year Engineering students of 'Clan Samagratha',

around 22 in number, participated in Techsparda, a

Technical Fest held at National Institute of Technology,

Kurukshetra. Mentored by Mr. Deexith of Second Year

Mechanical Engineering, the students participated in Maze

up, Robo Soccer, Water Rocket, and RC bots

The team won the following prizes:

Mechanical Engineering. The team was mentored by

Hassan Rashid and M.H. Shahas from Second year


The students participated in events such as Death Race,

Dirt Race, Line Follower and Robo Soccer. They were

qualified for second round in Death Race event.

Tathva'19 - National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kozhikode, Kerala

graVITas - Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) , Tamilnadu

Around 21 First Year Engineering students of 'Clan Mudita'

participated in graVITas'19, a Technical Fest held at Vellore

Institute of Technology, Vellore, Tamilnadu. They were

mentored by Mr. Sumanth from Second year Information

Science & Communication Engineering and Mr. Akhilesh from

Second year Computer Science & Engineering.

Various events such as Aeromodelling, Navigation Bootcamp,

De-melt, Chem-e-light, Suspendo, Chem-e-car and Auto

painting were organised. The team won prizes in the following

events:

• First place in Chem-e-car

• Fifth place in Chem-e-light

• First place in De-Melt

• Second place in Aeromodelling

• Fourth place in Chem-e-fountain

Engineer’19 - National Institute of Technology-Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal

The students participated in events like Robo Quest and Chem-

e-car and won 4th place in Chem-e-car and 8th place in Robo

Quest.

Eighteen students of ‘Clan Rachit’, participated in Amalthea’19,

an annual Tech Summit organized by Indian Institute of

Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The team was

mentored by Mr. K. Samarth N. Kamath, a student of Second

Year Computer Science & Engineering.

‘Amalthea 19’ - Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT), Gujarat

The Team participated in events such as Light of Seven, Bot,

Hockey, Trailblazer and Perfect Machine and secured 3rd & 4th

places in Light Follower, and 4th place in Robo Hockey.

Eighteen students from Clan Udbhav, participated in

Engineer’19, Technical Fest organized by National Institute of

Technology-Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal. The team was

mentored by Kaushik and Renil from Second year Computer

Science & Engineering.

Atmos - Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani, Hyderabad

The team participated in events such as Law Follower, I-

Navigator and Sequential Co-op and was qualified for second

round in I-navigate.

Around 21 students of ‘Clan Udgam’ participated in Atmos, an

annual Techno-Management Fest, organized by Birla Institute

of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani, Hyderabad. They were

mentored by Mr. Kiran Kumar & Mr. Vinay Kumar from Second

Year Electronics & Communication Engineering.

Concetto’19 - Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad

From Clan Udbhav, 28 students participated in

Concetto’19, the Annual Techno-Management Festival of

understanding about the theme and also accompanied the

students to the event.

Two teams of First Year Engineering have won prizes in the

Inter-collegiate Poster Presentation competition organized

by Mental Health Nursing Department, Yenepoya Nursing

College, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) in

commemoration of World Suicide Prevention day on the

theme Shining a light on Suicide Prevention. Ms Aanchal

and Mr Dhanush S won second prize and Ms Pooja K V

Shekar and Ms Adithi V Shetty won third prize. They

competed against 20 teams to secure the prizes.

'Youthopia-19' - Dehradun Institute of Technology, Uttarakhand

A total of 27 First Year Engineering students of Clan

Samarpan participated in ‘Youthopia-19’, a technical Fest

held during 7th to 9th Nov’19 at Dehradun Institute of

Technology, Uttarakhand. Mentored by Mr. Vishnu U. from

Second Year Information Science & Engineering, the team

participated in events such as RoboSoccer, Roborace, Maze

Solver and Robosumo.

The team won places in events viz. Avoid-it, Robo Race,

RoboSoccer and Robosumo.

‘Sphinx 19' - Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur

The team won places in Egg Suicide, Line follower and

Roborush. Moreover, the team also got qualified for top 5

in Water Rocket. A total of 16 First Year Engineering students of 'Clan

Sankalp' participated in 'Sphinx-19', a Technical Fest at

MNIT, Jaipur, Rajasthan. Mentored by Mr. Vijeth G. from

Second Year Mechanical Engineering, the team

participated in various events i.e. Roborush, Robotryst and

Water Rocket, etc.

Inauguration of Student Council for the Academic Year 2019-20

Sahyadri Student Council for the Academic Year 2019-20 was

inaugurated. Mr. Abhinandan Shetty, Former District Governor,

Rotary International was the Chief Guest.

The Chief Guest inaugurated the Student Council by watering a

plant. This was followed by the distribution of sachet and a rose

to the Heads of Council as a symbolic gesture of initiation. The

Principal lead the council members through the oath.

Mr. Abhinandan Shetty in his inaugural address, reminded the

council members of the moral and social responsibility they

have as members of the council towards the society in which

they operate. He said that we live in the world given to us by

someone and it is our duty to give our next generation a better

world. He also emphasized on treating failures as stepping

stones to success.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. Bhaskar Rao, IPS,

Game of Codes is organized by IEEE Students Branch of Sahyadri

On account of the IEEE Day, the IEEE Student Branch of

Sahyadri organized “Game of Codes”, a coding event

open to all. About 108 students had registered for the

first round, a Technical MCQ’s round which was hosted

in HackerEarth – a coding avenue. The top 25 students

of the first round then competed in the second round

hosted in HackerRank, which had three coding

scenarios to be solved. Mr. Hussian Muhammad Billal

of CSE was adjudged as the “King of Codes”.

Team Challengers to Participate in American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Competition in USA

Team Challengers of Sahyadri in the past having

conquered SAE Aero design Challenge has set out to

overcome the DBF Challenge this year. Based on the

Proposal submitted by the team, they have

successfully made it into the shortlisted 100 and are all

set to compete with world renowned universities

including Massachusetts Institute of Technology,

Georgia Institute of Technology, etc. in April 2020 at

Wichita, USA. American Institute of Aeronautics and

Astronautics (AIAA) is the world's largest aerospace

technical society, with nearly 30,000 individual

members from 85 countries across the whole world.

Annually, it conducts a Design/Build/Fly (DBF)

competition which allows real-world aircraft design

experience for engineering students by giving them

the opportunity to validate their analytic studies.

Talk on Cyber Security and Consumer Awareness

Mr. I L Narasimha Rao, Sr. Project Manager at Cyber Peace

Foundation and Ms. Janice Verghese a Techno-lawyer based in

Delhi gave talks on ‘Cyber Security and Consumer Awareness’

for the First Year Engineering students. Mr. I L Narasimha Rao

was the Project Manager at CDAC, previously.

Their talk included awareness on Net Etiquette, various

possibilities of Cyber Trap and importance of laws and policies.

They also shared various case studies and educated the

students on content removal. Students also received access to

Online Resource Centre, with a repository of videos, checklists,

advisories, government policies and reports.

"Hello Freshers!” - A Session by Mozilla Sahyadri

A Session on Introduction to Open Source and Domains

under Mozilla Open Source Community was held in the

campus. It was a hands-on session where students did

their first open source contribution on GitHub. Mozilla Club

Sahyadri is an Open-Source Developer Hub where

developers contribute, learn and help each other grow.

Mozilla Club Sahyadri which is under Sahyadri Open Source

Community (SOSC) has four main domains namely, Web

Development, Open Design, Game Development and

Mixed Reality.

Workshop on 'Cyber Safe Campus' by Prof. Ananth Prabhu

Center of Excellence Cyber Security and Institute's Innovation

Council - Sahyadri in association with ACM-Sahyadri organized a

workshop on Cyber Safe Campus for the First Year Engineering

students. The workshop was presided over by Dr. Ananth

Prabhu G., Professor, Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering.

Dr. Prabhu is a Guest Faculty of Cyber Security at Karnataka

Judicial Academy and Police Academy. In his talk, he gave

insight into some very common mistakes everyone does on the

internet, the problems caused by attackers while accessing the

internet and how the Trojan Virus is injected through the

pictures. He also suggested ways on how to be free from cyber-

attacks.

Dr Prabhu also spoke about some of the tools of artificial

intelligence which are being misused by the attackers to cheat

people.

Design 101 Workshop' by Mozilla Sahyadri and SOSC

A Series of Flutter Workshop by Developer Student Club (DSC)

Mozilla Sahyadri conducted a Workshop on 'Design 101', which

was facilitated by core team members of SOSC and Mozilla

Sahyadri. The first hands-on session was conducted by Mr.

Jehad Mohamed, Co-Design Head SOSC and ex-Club Captain

Mozilla. He covered topics on Open Source and how we can

contribute to it, Designing and Designers and basics of Adobe XD.

The second session was conducted by Mr. Nathaniel Ryan

Mathew, Vice-Club Captain- Mozilla. He covered the topic

“Colours and its significance in designing”. The last session of

the workshop was conducted by Mr. Dhanush Bangera, Co-

Design Head SOSC who covered topics on animation. The

Workshop was organized by Club Captain Basavarajeshwari.

Interested learners can be a part of Mozilla Club Sahyadri by

choosing a domain of interest and start learning.

Sunday, 29th Sept’19 marked the beginning of a series of

Flutter Workshop with Developer Student Clubs (DSC) Sahyadri

taking up a day’s worth of sessions on the new framework for

iOS and Android development by Google. Mr. Melwin Lobo and

Mr. Adithya Suvarna from Computer Science & Engineering

were the speakers at the event. The sessions covered the basics

required to build an app with Flutter. The workshop was

continued the following Sunday with in-depth information on

Flutter. DSC or Developer Student Clubs Sahyadri is affiliated to

Google Developer Groups.

IBM Regional Manager - Career Education visits SahyadriMr. Madhusudhana Rao R D, Regional Manager-Career

Education, IBM visited Sahyadri. He initiated and proposed

two Certificate Programs in the area of Artificial

Intelligence (AI) & Data Science which is one of the latest

upcoming future skills for the students of Sahyadri. He

stressed on IBM- Watson one of the latest tool used in the

area of AI and Data Science. After the session, he was taken

around the campus to view Sahyadri’s initiatives.

BOAT & DTE in collaboration with Sahyadri organize an Apprenticeship Fair Board of Apprenticeship Training (SR), Chennai &

Directorate of Technical Education, Bengaluru, in

collaboration with Sahyadri organized an Apprenticeship

Fair for Engineering Graduates/Diploma/ General

Sunday, 29th Sept’19 marked the beginning of a series of

Flutter Workshop with Developer Student Clubs (DSC) Sahyadri

taking up a day’s worth of sessions on the new framework for

iOS and Android development by Google. Mr. Melwin Lobo and

Mr. Adithya Suvarna from Computer Science & Engineering

were the speakers at the event. The sessions covered the basics

required to build an app with Flutter. The workshop was

continued the following Sunday with in-depth information on

Flutter. DSC or Developer Student Clubs Sahyadri is affiliated to

Google Developer Groups.

IBM Regional Manager - Career Education visits SahyadriMr. Madhusudhana Rao R D, Regional Manager-Career

Education, IBM visited Sahyadri. He initiated and proposed

two Certificate Programs in the area of Artificial

Intelligence (AI) & Data Science which is one of the latest

upcoming future skills for the students of Sahyadri. He

stressed on IBM- Watson one of the latest tool used in the

area of AI and Data Science. After the session, he was taken

around the campus to view Sahyadri’s initiatives.

Directorate of Technical Education, Bengaluru, in

Graduates in Sahyadri Campus which saw a participation of

around 400 students. Twenty one companies participated

Parents Interaction for New Entrants to the Engineering Stream

through CET was held in the campus. Mr. Manjunath Bhandary,

Chairman interacted with parents and said that he expected the

Parents to encourage their ward to focus and help them to take

up challenges. Half of the problems could be sorted out

thereupon, and students could start enjoying the course and

concentrate more on learning engineering rather than just

studying, he conveyed. While mentioning this, Mr Bhandary

highlighted the difference between basic Engineering and

Bachelor of Engineering, which focuses training on analytical,

aptitude and attitude development of the students, along with

academics.

Mr. Bhandary emphasized how Sahyadri was

able to attract highest number of companies

with excellent package and to have

consistency on the same is what lies in the crux

of the institution. The in-house companies

started by Industry experts and startups

further provide hands-on experience and

project based learning. This in turn helps instill

in students, technical skills, creative, aptitude,

attitude, exposure to latest technology.

In order to impart quality education as per the

AICTE model and to improve employability, various Industry

Academia Partnership and Mandatory Internships were being

initiated recently. This was already practiced by Sahyadri

Institution four years ago with initiatives such as training

students to participate in NIT, IIT, Internship Program, Product

based learning, Mentor-Mentee System, Outbound Program.

Also, social connect program is conducted in the same line to

identify the most daunting social problems and find the much

feasible solution which is an essence of real engineers. In the

end Mr. Bhandary said it is Sahyadri culture to nurture a student

as a well-mannered, well-disciplined and responsible citizen of

the country, and inculcate human values.

portrayed his own life as an example

of how a person can be successful. He

pointed out that getting good marks is as important as

understanding the subject. The formal function was

followed by cultural events by first year students. The

students put up an energizing show with dance and song

performances.

Mr. Srinivas Gowda R, IPS, Assistant Commissioner of

Police, Mangalore City and Mr. Girish Shivanna, Founder &

CEO, Test Yantra Software Solutions, were the guests for

the Freshers’ Day held at Sahyadri. Mr. Srinivasa Gowda

while addressing the students, spoke on the importance of

updating oneself with current affairs

in this competitive world. He also

encouraged the students to have

foresight of their career and excel in

their particular field. He advised

them to choose their peer group

wisely. He concluded with a few

success mantras to the audience.

Sinchana-2019 and Kannada Rajyotsava Day celebrated

As Karnataka state celebrates 63 years of glory, Sahyadri too

had a shining fervour added to it, by inaugurating Sinchana-

2019. The Chief Guest of the event was Mr. Vittal Nayak, Asst.

Teacher, Government Higher Primary School, Kalladka.

Students of Computer Science & Engineering won the first

place; Mechanical Engineering students won the second place,

and the third place went to the students of Electronics &

Communications Engineering.

Mr. Vittal Nayak in his inaugural address highlighted the

importance of Kannada literature. He appreciated Sahyadri for

celebrating Karnataka Rajyotsava to break the myth of English

being superior to Kannada. Speaking about Comparison and

Competition Mr. Nayak said that this is a dangerous trend and

urged the audience to come out of it. He stressed on the

importance of Relationships. Value people, and not material

things, he urged. Respect the soldiers. They safeguard our

borders so that we may lead a secure life. Mr. Nayak concluded

by sharing the importance of the 3S’ viz. Soul, Service and

Smile. Be true to your soul and serve with a smile. The inaugural

programme was followed by cultural extravaganza.

Aeromodelling Workshop conducted by Team Challengers

The team building the finest model

with proper aerodynamics was

awarded. Students were given

exposure to design wing profiles and

construction of aircraft models, also

giving them heads-up on the software's for developing new

models. The workshop concluded with an overwhelming

'Air-Show', which inspired students.

of judges. These shortlisted projects had training for

the last two weeks to help pitch these ideas.

intention of fuelling the passion to innovate and lead in

The finals of Elevate 2019, India’s first comprehensive

entrepreneurship platform of the Department of IT, BT and

S&T, Govt. of Karnataka. A total of 270 start-ups, which

made it to the finals after multicity pitching in Mysore,

Mangalore, Kalburgi, Belagavi and Bengaluru had an eight-

minute round of pitching in the finals, vying for funding,

mentorship and a chance to scale up their business ideas.

Start-up finalists pitched to respective panels of jury

members. One Hundred winners out of 270 start-ups have

been selected, based on recommendations of the Grand

Jury and approved by the Elevate Steering Committee.

Directors of Incognito Forensic Mr. Mohit Parmer and Mr.

Suresh Kumar, Directors of Incognito Forensic Foundation (IFF

Lab) were at Sahyadri. On Day One, they went through all the

initiatives of Sahyadri and got well acquainted with the Sahyadri

culture. On Day Two, they interacted with

faculty members and demonstrated

techniques of Cyber Security. This has not only

created awareness about Cyber Security and

Cyber Forensics, but also generated interest in

the faculty to take up Cyber Security as a core

area for their further development. IFF Lab is a

non-profit organization established under

Section 8 of the Companies Act. It offers a

complete range of forensic services and solutions, including

litigation consulting, electronic discovery and forensic

casework.

A 2-Day Session on “Basics of BlockChain” was organized under

Center of Excellence - PCB Fabrication Facility at Sahyadri

Sahyadri in association with Research Design Lab (RDL)

Pvt.Ltd and under the banner of Sahyadri Institute

Innovation Council (IIC) inaugurated the in-house

Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Fabrication Lab Center of

Excellence (CoE). PCB is an essential component of all

electronic devices, gadgets, mobile, laptop,

TV, UPS, etc. PCB integrates various

components to make the complete

product. To date, students of Sahyadri for

the projects and RDL for proof of concept

(POC) had to depend on external agencies

for realizing the circuit. This was time

consuming and involved cost and efforts.

This lab will enable idea to rapid

prototyping for both single and double side PCBs in

less than 30 minutes and facilitate Industry Connect

Program to provide hands-on experience with PCB

fabrication.

students to be part of the open-source ecosystem by

providing training and skill development.

‘Swacch Sahyadri’ - Gandhi Jayanthi and Shastri Ji's Birthday Celebrated

The speakers for the formal programme were Prof.

Development Goals’ during 2nd to 8th Nov’19 at

Hyderabad, in collaboration with United Nation

Development Program (UNDP). Mr. Sunil Kumar of 4th

Year Computer Science Engineering was the mentor.

Mr. Nishanth is entitled to get an internship in

Netherlands for 6 months, which will be sponsored by

investors from Citi, UNDP. Upon completion of the

project, as a product it will be launched by the United

Nations. As a SSTH winner he chose Sahyadri to

pursue his dreams to come true. The seed sown 5 years

ago to promote innovations in the region has begun to

show fruitfulness in abundance. The above project had won an award in SSTH - 2017

and Mr. Nishanth had represented Sharada PU

College, then. And now, he has won the Youth for SDG

Award, and the same project is selected by NAIN for

further development.

Computer Science & Engineering, participated in

National Level Aero Modelling competition held at

National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), and

secured 3rd position. The team members also

interacted with many teams from various other

colleges from all around India, who also participated in

the prestigious event.

Alumnus of Challengers made it into IndiGo Airlines

Mr Kausthubh P. an Alumnus of Challengers,

Department of Mechanical Engineering, has cleared

IndiGo Selection Process. IndiGo has a rigorous

selection procedure consisting of 4 rounds. It assesses

the eligibility of a candidate to become the captain on

their fleet. Mr. Kausthubh joined the course (Insight

Aviation). He will have his ground training in Gurgaon

after clearing the DGCA papers. Thereafter, he will be

sent to South Africa

for flight training and

after the conversion

of license he will be

sent to UAE for type

rating of Airbus A320.

After the completion of this course, he will be joining

as a First Officer for the Airlines.

Inauguration of Sahyadri Youth Red Cross Unit and SERV Team Training

The Sahyadri Youth Red Cross Unit was inaugurated by Mr. C.A.

Shanthram Shetty, Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, DK

Branch. The 2-Day Training of the First Social Emergency

Response Volunteer Team was kick-started the same day. The

training continued for two days.

Mr Shanthram Shetty, in his inaugural address spoke about the

importance of students’ active participation in rendering

selfless service to humanity. He gave a brief about the

history and working of the Red Cross Society and

appreciated Sahyadri for starting the Youth Red Cross Unit.

The Chief Guest of the inaugural function was Mr.

Prabhakar Sharma, S.A., KAS, Hon. Secretary, IRCS, DK. He

related his experience in Red Cross and how it impacted and

changed his life. He urged the students to participate in as

many social activities as possible involving selfless service.

He had nothing but admiration for Sahyadri for their

initiative to set up a Youth Red Cross Unit which is

something very rare when it comes to professional technical

colleges. Mr Sacheth Suvarna, SERV Coordinator, IRCS DK; Mr.

Ashwin Kumar and Mrs. Gloria Rodrigues were the resource

persons for the training programme. Around 30 students from

all branches of engineering and MBA, participated in the 2-Day

Training imparted by experts in basic first aid.

A total of 23 students participated in GO programming

Workshop at NITK, Suratkal organized by "ACM-NITK". The

Resource Person was Jyotsna Gupta, Software Developer-

Coffeebeans Consulting LPP, Bengaluru. The session

consisted of learning Syntax of GO.

Go or GoLang, is an open source programming language

designed for building simple, fast and reliable software said

Ms. Gupta. It is far better than other programming

languages. The Workshop was concluded by teaching

students how to build secure server using GO and career

fields related to it.

Hyderabad, in collaboration with United Nation

Development Program (UNDP). Mr. Sunil Kumar of 4th

Year Computer Science Engineering was the mentor.

Mr. Nishanth is entitled to get an internship in

Netherlands for 6 months, which will be sponsored by

investors from Citi, UNDP. Upon completion of the

project, as a product it will be launched by the United

Nations. As a SSTH winner he chose Sahyadri to

pursue his dreams to come true. The seed sown 5 years

ago to promote innovations in the region has begun to

show fruitfulness in abundance. The above project had won an award in SSTH - 2017

and Mr. Nishanth had represented Sharada PU

College, then. And now, he has won the Youth for SDG

Award, and the same project is selected by NAIN for

further development.

National Level Aero Modelling competition held at

National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), and

secured 3rd position. The team members also

interacted with many teams from various other

colleges from all around India, who also participated in

the prestigious event.

Alumnus of Challengers made it into IndiGo Airlines

Mr Kausthubh P. an Alumnus of Challengers,

Department of Mechanical Engineering, has cleared

IndiGo Selection Process. IndiGo has a rigorous

selection procedure consisting of 4 rounds. It assesses

the eligibility of a candidate to become the captain on

their fleet. Mr. Kausthubh joined the course (Insight

Aviation). He will have his ground training in Gurgaon

after clearing the DGCA papers. Thereafter, he will be

sent to South Africa

for flight training and

after the conversion

of license he will be

sent to UAE for type

rating of Airbus A320.

After the completion of this course, he will be joining

as a First Officer for the Airlines.

Inauguration of Sahyadri Youth Red Cross Unit and SERV Team Training

The Sahyadri Youth Red Cross Unit was inaugurated by Mr. C.A.

Shanthram Shetty, Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, DK

Branch. The 2-Day Training of the First Social Emergency

Response Volunteer Team was kick-started the same day. The

training continued for two days.

Mr Shanthram Shetty, in his inaugural address spoke about the

importance of students’ active participation in rendering

selfless service to humanity. He gave a brief about the

history and working of the Red Cross Society and

appreciated Sahyadri for starting the Youth Red Cross Unit.

The Chief Guest of the inaugural function was Mr.

Prabhakar Sharma, S.A., KAS, Hon. Secretary, IRCS, DK. He

related his experience in Red Cross and how it impacted and

changed his life. He urged the students to participate in as

many social activities as possible involving selfless service.

He had nothing but admiration for Sahyadri for their

initiative to set up a Youth Red Cross Unit which is

something very rare when it comes to professional technical

colleges. Mr Sacheth Suvarna, SERV Coordinator, IRCS DK; Mr.

Ashwin Kumar and Mrs. Gloria Rodrigues were the resource

persons for the training programme. Around 30 students from

all branches of engineering and MBA, participated in the 2-Day

Training imparted by experts in basic first aid.

Engineering students attend Workshop at NITK, Suratkal

A total of 23 students participated in GO programming

Workshop at NITK, Suratkal organized by "ACM-NITK". The

Resource Person was Jyotsna Gupta, Software Developer-

Coffeebeans Consulting LPP, Bengaluru. The session

consisted of learning Syntax of GO.

Go or GoLang, is an open source programming language

designed for building simple, fast and reliable software said

Ms. Gupta. It is far better than other programming

languages. The Workshop was concluded by teaching

students how to build secure server using GO and career

fields related to it.

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Survey carried out by Civil Engineering Students

In this regard, the first phase of UBA survey of Badagabellur

Village, Bantwal Taluk has been carried out. As a process,

the second household survey was conducted by the Third

Semester Civil Engineering students. During this survey

students gathered information regarding problems faced

by the villagers with issues relating to health & sanitation,

educational facilities, water supply, food & nutrition, road

networks and other basic amenities.

Talk". The Talk was delivered by Dr. Rachan Shetty,

Consultant Oncologist, A.J. Cancer Institute, Mangaluru. Dr.

Rachan Shetty comes with an extensive experience in solid

tumour oncology, treatment of breast, lung, liver,

gastrointestinal, head and neck and gynaecological

malignancy.

In his talk, Dr. Rachan Shetty explained in detail about the

causes of breast cancer, risk factors, screening methods,

early detection and the need for a reliable permanent cure.

Sahyadri Pupils Association of Civil Engineers-SPACE was

engineer faces in the initial stages of his career and the

the importance of hard work and how it could act as a

catalyst and help the students in being successful in their

thoughts on Professional Ethics emphasizing on the

primary values of code of conduct and universal ethical

principles to be followed in the civil engineering

in various competitions at ‘Pravarthana – 2K19’, an

Intercollegiate Technical Fest organized by PES Institute of

Sessions on Design Thinking for Sector-specific SolutionA session was conducted on Design Thinking on 4th Nov’19 for

the 2nd Year students of Civil Engineering. In this session,

students were asked to choose different sectors in which they

would like to work for the next 3 years.

Given the various problems affecting Dakshina Kannada

District, the students were advised to come up with plausible

solutions that could positively impact the region. This activity

was intended to sensitize the students to local problems and

instil a problem solving attitude in them.

Students of Seventh Semester Civil Engineering visited

Gurupura River Bridge Construction site with a view to get a

broader exposure on Prestressed Concrete Bridge Elements

and project management practices used in the construction of

bridges. The students had an opportunity to know things like

prestressing of deck slabs of bridges through interaction with

the site engineers, prestressing methodologies and

employment practices adopted based on site conditions, in a

practical sense.

Students of Civil Engineering visit Marian Park, Construction SiteStudents of VII Semester Civil Engineering visited the

construction site of an ongoing 34-storey residential and

commercial building ‘Marian Park’, at Kadri, Mangalore.

The students interacted with the site engineers. They were

briefed on the site plan of the project, geotechnical

challenges involved in the execution of project, foundation

details, RC detailing and interior designing specifications

employed.

FLAMES (Fulfilling Aspirations of Mechanical Engineering

Students) a student association of the Department of

Mechanical Engineering for the academic year 2019-20 was

inaugurated by the Alumnus Guest Mr. Varshith K.N, currently

working for Anglo Eastern Ship Management. Speaking on the

occasion, Mr. Varshith K.N stressed on the importance of basic

knowledge about various technical subjects to enhance the

academic performance. He also gave overview on preparation

to be done in order to get better offers from various Mechanical

industries. Further, he gave brief exposure about the role of

mechanical engineer in the marine industries, importance of

the discipline, necessary skills involved in technical and time

Department organizes “CATAPULT-2.0” The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized

“Catapult 2.0” at Sahyadri. The event was held with an aim of

providing a platform for the students to exhibit their technical

talent. The event saw the participation of over 43 teams from 6

different colleges, to present the different designs of ballistic

device that could propel projectiles. Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte,

ACM Sahyadri Student Chapter was launched in Sahyadri

under the banner of MHRDs Institutional Innovation

Council-Sahyadri. The Chief Guest of the event was Ms.

Samyuktha Prabhu (Current GirlScript Regional Head of

Karnataka). The launching ceremony took place in the

gracious presence of the Chief Guest. ACM Sahyadri is the

first chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery in

Sahyadri. Ms. Samyuktha Prabhu delivered the Leadership

Talk on "Opportunities and Career through ACM". She

gave a glimpse of the functioning of ACM-W Chapter

Manipal, different events that can be hosted by the ACM

Mr. Keerthan Nayak, an Alumnus of Dept. of Electronics &

Communications Engineering currently working as

Associate Engineer-Testing in SLK Software Services Pvt Ltd

interacted with the Second Year students of Electronics &

Communications Engineering. He discussed the various

opportunities in the electronics domain. He shared his

experience about his interview process, nature of his work

and the opportunities available in PSU's. He stressed on

pursuing higher studies abroad or in any prestigious

institution of India.

IoT, embedded system and VLSI are the key domains in

which a person must be specialized in order to get into any

Electronics & Communications domain company, he

stated. He stressed on getting certified in programming

languages such as Python. He also advised the students to

maintain good aggregate so that they can get placed before

completing their engineering.

The Association of Electronics & Communication

Engineering Students (AEnCES) of the Department of

Electronics & Communication Engineering, for the

Academic Year 2019-2020 was inaugurated on 22ndOct'19.

The theme of the event was REDCARPET.

Dr. R. Srinivasa Rao Kunte, Principal, was the Chief Guest.

He addressed the gathering and briefed them on the

upcoming visit of the NBA team to the campus. He also

spoke about how NBA accreditation could benefit the

student fraternity. Dr. Ashwath Rao, Head, Department of

Electronics & Communication Engineering gave insights

into the various initiatives of the department such as

virtual labs, mentoring and peer to peer learning. The key

to achieve goals, is the active involvement of students in

these initiatives, he stressed.

Mr. Gurusiddayya Hiremath, Co-ordinator indicated the

importance of such events in the future life, when students

start working. He also expressed his gratitude to students,

teaching and non-teaching staff, for their active

Orientation for Second Year Students

A brief introduction regarding communication and control

system vertical viz. Elements of Communication System, types

of Communication and Applications of communication was

presented by the faculty members.

Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering organized

an Orientation Program for 3rd semester students during 24th

to 27th July’19. Dr. Ashwath Rao, Head of the Dept. gave a brief

overview of the dept. verticals, thrust areas, NPTEL/MOOC

courses and the mapping of various subjects to the thrust

areas. He also gave an insight on how the Industry Connect

courses have been evolved and how they are mapped to Future

Skills. He urged the students to actively involve themselves and

take maximum benefit from the industry connect courses.

Five-Day Short Term Course on Digital IC Design – SystemVerilog and UVM

addressed the participants. They advised the participants to

use this opportunity provided by the institution. The session

started with the basics of Verilog which included Data types,

Assignment statements and Task and Functions and also

different types of modeling like Gate-level Modeling, Structural

Modeling, Behavioral Modeling and Data-flow Modeling. They

also made students write Verilog code in different models.

Next, they explained about the RTL Verification Flow and then

continued with hands-on session.

courses and how students can get benefit from these initiatives

provided by the dept. He gave an overview of the course and

emphasized on its importance and job opportunities in the field

of Digital IC Design.

Workshop on “PCB: Design and Manufacture”

The objective of this workshop was to help Second Year

students render better circuit designs for their projects and

in order to help them explore the possibilities of PCB

designing. The workshop was organized and conducted by

IETE Coordinator Ms. Megha N and IETE Students’ Forum

committee members. The various topics delivered

included advantages of PCBs, types of PCBs, uses of

different PCBs and the process of etching PCBs. The

students were introduced to open source PCB Design

Software, using which they designed a simple sound

amplifier circuit. The students were then provided with

components to rig up the amplifier circuit. The hands-on

experience in designing and building the circuit provided

the students with exposure to the various thrust areas in

VLSI vertical.

Faculty selected to pursue PhD at Indian Institute of Space Science and TechnologyProf. Nisha from the Dept. of Electronics & Communication Engineering has been selected to pursue PhD under

AICTE-INAE Teachers Research Fellowship Scheme at Department of Avionics, Indian Institute of Space Science

and Technology (IIST), Thiruvanthapuram. Engineering Teachers of AICTE approved institutions can apply for

AICTE-INAE Teachers Research Fellowship Scheme for pursuing PhD in Government Research Labs. On applying,

Nisha had to go through a Written Test and also an Interview round. She is the only candidate to be selected

under this scheme in IIST in the whole of India making Sahyadri proud. Nisha an alumna of Sahyadri is working

with Sahyadri for the last 3 years. Her research area for PhD is "Microelectronics, Transducers & Actuators, Micro-

electromechanical System (MEMS), Electromangetics, and Communication Systems".

VTU e-Learning Video Lecture on ‘Electronic Devices’ for E&C studentsThe third semester students of Electronics & Communication

Engineering attended the VTU e-Learning Video Lecture on

“Electronic Devices” under “VTU e-Shikshana” platform on

28th Aug’19. The deliberations of the session included topics

on Electron Conductivity and Mobility, Drift and Resistance,

Effects of Temperature and Mobility. VTU e-Learning Centre has

taken up a new initiative in enriching knowledge and

empowering education through implementing Virtual

Interactive e-Learning platform named as “VTU e-Shikshana-

NBA Process for the Second Year students. Prof. Vasudeva

Rao, an in-house faculty handled a session which

highlighted the overview of Outcome Based Education, its

Mr. Charan Kumar shared his seven years of industrial

experience. He also briefed the students on the current

industry needs and importance of good practices in

During the session, Mr. Anand discussed about the

on the benefits of being self-employed. As part of the subject- Management and Entrepreneurship

for Industry, an Industry Interaction session 'Direct Selling

Business' was organized by the Dept. of Information

Science & Engineering for the students of fifth semester, on

he said. Mr. Chethak is an Associate Director in the Kannada

Film Industry. He is the co-founder of Axemen's Films Ad

Company in Mangaluru. He started his career as an Assistant

Director of Blockbuster movie “Ondu MotteyaKathe”. Later, he

also worked in “Sarakari Hiriya Praathamika Shaale

Kasaragodu” which won National Award. He has worked in six

movies so far.

The inauguration of Students Association of Information

Science & Engineering (STAISE) of the Dept. of Information

Science & Engineering was held on 23rd Oct'19. The chief

guests for the programme were Alumni Mr. Chethak Kulal and

Mr. Lenson Roy Saldahna.

Mr. Lenson Roy Saldanha is one of the Directors of Axndx

Technologies Pvt. Ltd., a Private incorporated company in

Mangaluru. Axndx is involved in software publishing,

consultancy and supply. In his address, Mr. Saldanha

encouraged the gathering to aim high and think of the bigger

picture. So, put in your best effort and work hard to attain it, he

urged. He also shared his experiences of those days of struggle,

in his career as an entrepreneur.

ISE Students on an Industrial Visit to Software Technology Park of India

Dept. of Information Science & Engineering organized an

industrial visit to Software Technology Park of India, Mangaluru

for the Fifth Semester students. Students got to know the

significant progress in nurturing the growth of Software

Industry after the establishment of STPI Centre in Mangaluru.

The students also received heads-up on entrepreneurial skills,

project implementation and practical approach to understand

certain theories dealt in class. The infrastructure consists of

NOC Working Area, Incubation Facility, Spacious Conference

Hall, Networks Monitoring System and Library.

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is inspired by the vision of

transformational change in rural development processes

Bharat Abhiyan is to enable higher educational institutions

to work with the people of rural India in identifying

development challenges and evolving appropriate

solutions for accelerating sustainable growth. Under this,

institutes through their faculty and students, will carry out

studies of living conditions in adopted villages.

Management’. Mr. Manoj made the students understand

'Deep Fakes' at the SDPS 2019 Conference held at Taichung,

Dr. Ananth Prabhu G, Professor, Dept. of Computer Science

& Engineering was invited to deliver a Guest Lecture on

'Deep Fakes' at the SDPS 2019 Conference held at Taichung,

Taiwan. Dr Prabhu also presented a pre-release copy of the

Cyber Safe Girl V2.0 book to Prof. Thomas Wan, an eminent

academician and researcher who has been the recipient of

more than 30 Million Dollars Research Grant for his

exemplary research work in the field of Health Informatics.

Also, another copy was presented to Dr. Varadraj G,

Associate Professor from the University of Central Florida

and a researcher who has published more than 100 journal

and research articles. He also briefed them on the unique

initiatives at Sahyadri, the start-up culture and other

innovative programmes.

Dr. Prabhu also interacted with Dr. Ying-Chyi Chou, Director

Host Institution Status to Sahyadri by MSME, Govt. of IndiaSahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mangaluru

has been recognized by Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium

Enterprises (MSME), Government of India as a Host Institution

(HI) to set-up/establish Business Incubator (BI) for

implementation of the scheme namely “Support for

The main objective of this scheme is to promote and support

The objective of the proposed project is to analyze the impact

of the Training Interventions through Pre-Training and Post-

Training Analysis. The study includes conducting Psychometric

Tests and Hands-On Tests to identify the Skill Gap and design

Training programmes to overcome the gap. A total of 13 UG

Govt. colleges have been identified for the study. The outcome

of the study should see increased employability of the

graduates.

Jyoti CNC demonstrated their latest software, “7th Sense”,

which facilitates live monitoring of production, collation of

big data on production & maintenance. By installing this

software, students will get hands-on learning experience

on the latest skills like big data, networking, IOT etc.

Caliper adds another Nuclear Plant as their customerCaliper has bagged the first order from Tarapur Nuclear Power Plant, adding 5th Nuclear Power Plant as their customer. Reverse

engineering product with special surface coating is entrusted on Caliper, which is a challenging task. Product is planned to be

developed with Industry-Academia collaboration between Caliper and Sahyadri.

Padma Shri (Yr. 1991). The Fifth Edition of CII Industrial

Intellectual Property Awards were conferred on 11 companies

for best portfolios in Patents, Design, and Trademarks. There

were separate awards for large, medium, small-sized

companies and start-ups in two broad categories of

Engineering and Life Science.

Dr. AnushBekal, Associate Professor, In-Charge of Industry

Connect & Sahyadri– CII, Sahyadri College of Engineering &

Management were present during the awarding ceremony.

The awards were given at the 5th International IPR Conference,

jointly organized by CII, Intellectual Property Office India and

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. The

theme of the conference was Innovation and IP led Technology

for a $5 Trillion Economy.

Members of DT-LabzPvt Ltd conduct sessions at Robotic Workshop by AmdocsA 'Robotic Workshop' was organized by Amdocs, a

Multinational Corporation which specializes in Software and

Services as a part of their Innovation Week. Mr. Johnson Tellis,

Director and Mr. Sagar K Devadiga, Technical Trainer of DT-

LabzPvt Ltd delivered a session at this workshop, which was

held at Pune and Gurgaon.

Caliper Engineering gets approval from Brahmos Aerospace to be a VendorBrahmos Aerospace, Trivandrum, manufacturers of supersonic

cruise missiles for the Defence Forces, visited Caliper

Engineering & Lab Pvt Ltd, In-house Industry at Sahyadri, on

23rd Oct'19. After extensive quality audit, Brahmos approved

Caliper to be included as their vendor. This opens up new

horizon for Caliper and also provides Hi-Tech learning

opportunities for students.

Caliper ships its first export order to Europe

Maverick Valves is a dynamic global trading company and

supplier in the Valve industry based in the Netherlands.

Within a short period of four weeks, the first export order

was shipped. Impressed with the swift action and good

performance, Maverick Valves has placed further orders

for various valve components. The same are now under

production at Caliper.

Caliper Engineering & Lab Pvt Ltd, an in-house start-up

Company in Sahaydri, shipped its first export order to

Europe.In response to the order placed by Maverick Valves

for their requirements of valve components, the order was

shipped to them by Caliper. The valve components are

produced by Caliper, maintaining strict quality standards.

Maker Camp DIY Eco-friendly Diwali Lamps M a ke r C a m p – a n

Awareness Programme

was conducted on

20thOct'19 with the

intent to reduce the use

of plastic lamps during

Diwali. Eco-friendly Diwali lamps were made during this

camp, using recycled coconut shells and bamboo. Students

along with their families participated in this camp and

made their own lamps as takeaways for their homes.

The Maker-Camp was organized by DreamWorks

Makerspace Sahyadri in collaboration with DTlabz R&D Pvt.

Ltd. It is an initiative of the Institution's Innovation Council

(Ministry of Human Resource Development).
